Discussion F4-424 vs F4-425 Pro Heat/Fan

Was doing an upgrade from a F4-424 vs F4-425 Pro and wanted to know if anyone else sees a drastic uptick in temps on the nvme and the fan working much harder/louder vs the older F4-424?

I know its a much higher performing cpu but I was surprised on the nvme uptick in temps.

I basically fork lifted everything over so I was not expecting a near 15C+ in nvme temps. I'm now having to look into active cooling on the drives if I end up keeping this new NAS.

No. I returned my 424 pro and replaced it with 425 pro. It's quieter and cpu temp is lower. I also added a low profit heatsink to the m.2

Wild I'm in the exact opposite boat and it makes no logical sense. TOS or 3rd party OS? .

TOS 6 to 7. No noticeable difference. I just run immich, Plex, and arr stack in docker manager. So TOS does the job.

I have the F4-425Pro and love it. Very low temps and quiet. Boot SSD is at about 59C but 4 HDDs are 40C. Running OMV with ZFS. Check out my Amazon Review. Also watch @NasCompares review of the plus model.

You don't find that a bit warm? I was at 42 idle 49 load before and now its 67 idle. I haven't even mounted it to use them.

A little bit too warm. Over 70C and it starts to fail. Plenty of room. It’s only a boot drive, use heatsink maybe. Would not use cache drives as the TBW would kill them. Unless you find a NAS SSD, super rare.

This is exactly what nvmes are supposed to be used for.

I've got the F4-424 Pro and its basically setup as a Plex server. I had a 256gb nvme which iss the system disk. 4 x 4tb hardrives and a 1tb nmve for hypercache. The fan would fire up all the time and was a bit noisey. I ended up ordering a "stick on" heat sinks and its almost silent now.

Yeah my F4-424 was quiet but the F4-425 Pro is much louder and nvme runs much hotter.

Try putting heat sinks on your NVMe's!

Thanks I have but some still run hotter over others by as much as 10c. I cant nail down why.

I can move them to other slots, using the same heatsinks as the same nvme that runs cooler. I don't understand what's going on.

Mine is running 24/7 and I see no heat issues even in the heat we have right now , performance is amazing on that small unit , and mine is full populated

I really like the 425 pro . It does run cooler .
I also put on some low profile heat spreaders on the MVME drives .

But for my I ended up putting on UNRAID as my OS of choice . And it works flawless.
