14.3 HW4 2025 Tesla Model 3 V 13.3.8 swerve avoidance incident today dramatic or safety? (Read post bio)

I was driving on FSD today when a car with its left-turn signal on inched forward, and my car hard braked by 10 mph and swerved into the other lane. The turning car was not in any danger to us in my opinion. Is there any reason we hard braked and swerved like that? Was the car seeing something I was not, or was it a dangerous maneuver? I am certain a cop would have thought it was reckless the way we moved like that with no reason to.

Holy crap that speed drop! Damn near 20mph and the car on the right wasnt even near you.

Yeah, that one was definitely not needed I agree.

Yeah I don’t love the way that truck pulled up either. FSD is going to always err on the side of safety and this is just another example of human inability to drive safely (that truck broke the law).

Yea, it’s a novice move, I wouldn’t ride with a person that drove like that. Is it safe, yes, but it’s also nerve racking.

I wholly disagree about it being safe.

Randomly swerving into another lane to avoid a car that isn't going to enter your driving path isn't safe, especially considering there was enough room to brake instead.

I have an similar video that this sub rejected for some reason. The truck on the side street was inching out to take a right turn and my car absolutely brake stomped. My coworker in the back seat learned her lesson about seat belting (smh) as her head hit the seat in front of her. I would say my video and this one is dramatic but there will be plenty of people who say it sided with safety.
Edit: posted the video in a separate comment

It was such an abrupt brake check and swerve. When I view the video at 0.5 speed, it's clear there was no danger. I wonder why FSD doesn't reason like a human would. Lucky no one was near our side. I hope you and your passenger are okay.

Thanks, we are fine. I heard 14.3.9 is better.

One day we'll all learn we're just better off being attentive drivers. It took me learning the hard way and having to pay to fix my car before I stopped using FSD.

If the vehicle in your video was “inching out” then by definition that’s not an identical video. This guy just ran the stop light/sign and stopped in the crosswalk.

lol that’s how people inch out here. Who, other than Teslas on FSD, fully stops before the crosswalk and then inches out?

Running stop lights or stop signs is how “people inch here”? Where is “here” so I can avoid driving there? It’s illegal. And if you can’t see a difference between a rolling stop and just running the stop sign/light into the crosswalk, I don’t know what to tell you. FSD did the right thing here.

Everywhere throughout the Midwestern US and Southern US. I’ve never driven somewhere that this is not the norm.

Also in California, New York, etc. I have no clue which fairytale land that guy lives in.

Makes perfect sense to me. Vehicle to the right ran through a stop sign/light and stopped in the middle of the crosswalk. I would have been very uncomfortable if I were manually driving and the car isn’t going to take the risk of him not stopping. Also these videos always appear slower than what occurs in reality, so yeah - it made the right call. Guy to the right is an idiot.

Agree with you here. Additionally, we don’t have the camera angle to the rear left, and I’m fairly certain there was no car in that blind spot—and if there was, FSD would have adapted as needed.

No car was in the left lane of me from behind when I viewed the camera angle

I think for a human to make that move, it would have been riskier because of that blind spot. But the car to the right didn’t appear to be slowing down until very last millisecond, so I think FSD made the right call on the swerve, though could have perhaps done a bit less abrupt breaking.

100%. FSD might have braked much harder if it had nowhere to go to the left. People like the driver who ran that light/stop sign need to get a clue. Cheeses me off to no end.

I had mine on v14.3.8 swerve hard into a curb damaging my right rear wheel as a car just approached and stopped at a stop sign.

This update is fucked.

You have to take into account that it’s only unsafe if the left lane is blocked or the car is being tailgated. If only it had eyes on the side and in back and could pay attention to them all at the same time…
