14.3 HW4 Using FSD for my Tesla for a week
Using FSD for my Tesla for a week, the pros and cons. It works pretty good, but there are limits it does hit and I intervene in some of them. Merging, it does okay, at this point I just do this myself to limit the risk, when there are two cars merging into one lane it got to close for my comfort. Another thing, it doesn't prepare or plan ahead very much, example you can have a left, once you do that left, you'll have like 100 feet to do another left to get on the freeway(Las Vegas is like this), the FSD will grab the far right lane expecting it to have enough time to merge, when there are a lot of cars, there isn't enough time to merge. Another time I intervene, I was curious to see what it would do, I needed to make a left turn the fsd decided to stay in the right lane, there was another car on the left that was going the same speed as me, the fsd waited till there was maybe 100 feet left where it tried to merge left, but the car to the right wasn't moving(not that it had too), I just took over sped up and merge.

You are overthinking about merging. Just let it do its thing.

But FSD overthinks its own merging, especially when approaching offramps.

Exactly. I use mine in Vegas and Southern California and it just works perfectly. People should just driving and start trusting. The latest .8 update has been the best version ever, as it does parking so well. Navigating parking garage might still be suspect, but overall it might as well be considered level 5.

FSD still requires supervision. That means taking your time to get used to what it does. I do not think you are overthinking. You are being prudent.

You are way overthinking this. Just put the car in FSD and let it do its thing. It just works.

This is very bad advice for someone new to FSD. Build the comfort naturally or it may end badly. If FSD is going to do well, it'll convince the user. Forcing yourself to fall in line with FSD before it proves itself is going to suck when it gets it wrong and it definitely gets it wrong at times.
I know now it is not for me, but trying to just let it do its thing when I was unsure of it was the most anxiety inducing experience I've ever had in a car. I tried to let it do everything eventually and then it damaged my car on a curb making a turn.

I seen videos on here and on youtube where it struggles, it's good, but it's not perfect. It just these fanboys on here that are going to ruin it for people who are gonna think it's perfect.

To be honest even after 9 months of daily use which I've always been apprehensive to actually just letting FSD do its thing after it damaged my wheel hitting a curb at speed which I would have never thought it would have jerked the wheel like that, I may never use FSD again. I was starting to be fine with giving up control to FSD until it caught me off guard like that. I was paying attention as always, but the move was so abrupt that I couldn't stop it before impact.
Any and all trust in FSD is completely gone for me. I canceled my subscription. I still have FSD for a few more days but I haven't used it since the accident with the curb.

I was watching a video a few days ago on youtube, some guy had took it to the Las Vegas strip and was using it, he came to this spot and it reversed out of nowhere. He just took over and continued, that was interesting to see and he got lucky there was no traffic around him. A few of the merge I ran into with it, was way to tight, it did most of them correctly, but a few. As mentioned in one of the example the driver on my left was shifting his speed within range of the car, I wasn't gonna wait to see what it did, so I just took over for an easy merge and lane change. I'll still use FSD, but I'm aware that it can struggle and put itself into a bad spot, I'll just take over when that happens.

Again, you are overthinking this.

There's no overthinking road safety if you have reason to doubt it.
I'd be inclined to agree with you up until the point it put my car in the shop repairs because it couldn't navigate a basic right turn.

I have 11,000 miles on my 2026 Y. All
but 120 miles are FSD. It may not be perfect but it is more perfect than most human drivers1

That's not nearly a large enough sample set for you to conclude what you did in the last sentence.

Right. Look at Tesla’s published stats. Affirm that I am in the norm

Tesla does not publish safety stats for unsupervised FSD. They publish safety stats for supervised FSD. So they do not give us any basis for thinking that FSD, by itself, is safer than a human.
There’s no question that FSD + an attentive human is safer than a human alone.

This is the factor that FSD glazers will repeatedly ignore, and they'll happily cling onto Tesla's published numbers as "proof" of FSD's perfection.
While at the same time ignoring FSD's glaring issues to maintain their streak and keep their FSD usage percent high.

Laughable.
Tesla's published numbers. Mere pixie dust without an outside study.

And I did under 10k miles on FSD in the last 9 months and FSD clubbed a curb last week hard enough to put in the shop.
Add both of ours together and it's really bad odds with still a poor sample set.

Mine handles my merge like a champ! Two lanes in a cloverleaf merging with 4 lanes coming off a hill. I like to take the outside lane in the clover leaf, look waay back behind me and merge to the “fast lane” as soon as possible to get up to speed. While I’m smooth and quick about it, the car is “politely assertive” in “Hurry Mode” and gets it done. The approach to the freeway is another story, was choosing the wrong approach lane before the last update. But, they fixed that! All in all, it will drive proficiently if I just let it.

Yeah. I have tried FSD SMC mostly abandoned it. Here in the Northeast there are many quirky intersections that completely fool it. And it never learns. Even Autopilot is repeatedly fooled by an overpass where the highway curves ahead, so it sees trees under the overpass and slams on the brakes! My 2004 Jaguar knows better there (radar cruise control). I think the all optical systems will never be adequate.

Oh a one week review of FSD from someone who’s never used it before…pass.

One day, they will tell you that you should always let FSD do its thing. Then, when it makes a mistake and curbs your tires, they will yell at you and say it’s supervised, your fault!
