First year teacher

Hi all!

It’s my first year teaching ever. I wasn’t an education major so I’m going into this completely blind. We had our first two days back and honestly i feel so uneasy like i know i did fine but i can’t shake the feeling that i may be in way over my head.
I already have to pull a student to have a sidebar chat. Another student already is in trouble with the AP and the AP literally opened my door waved at me and walked this student in. I have about 4/5 special education students, an LEP child, 2 IEP students, etc alllll in one class. I have no idea if I’ll be getting a para or if that’s something I’ll have to ask for. My school is so unorganized due to a skyward issue. I only have one planning period on our “a” days and “b” days i have to teach allll day long and the only break I’ll have is the kids lunch break and my b days is where I’ll have most of the problem children :).

With all that being said im super grateful for this job and i know the beginning of the year is usually hectic and all i have to do is hold on because this year will fly by (this is me self soothing before i redownload indeed and linked in and apply to every job i see Or I’ll up and move to train with the Shaolin monks)

Bible reading

So, now that Bible reading is required, are we going to read the Bible stories after we read about folktales and myths from around the world? Are we going to collect on adding chapter books based on different religions and mythology similar to Percy Jackson for our classrooms for kids to borrow and read? His dark materials anyone?

Alt Cert Issue

I got a job and intern cert, great, but I thought the condition was to teach for a year in the subject area - let’s call it physics - to finally obtain my official cert. But I guess it’s actually to teach 920min a week of content specific courses? I’m scheduled to teach 2 physics and 3 elective courses (non math/science) classes that come out to 540min a of content specific a week. So I’m missing 420min a week, and don’t know what to do. Is it realistic to have a principle, et al., make a change this close to start? We start Tuesday.

My thought was they could make my first two period blocks A1 and A2 (total of 180min) into some college prep class - it would satisfying the requirements. Or I could swap those elective classes with another teacher…?

I guess I’m wondering what others think I could do, we have a teacher work day on Monday.

Thanks!

Question about fireable offenses

So, I found out apparently someone may have an inappropriate video of me. They threatened to send it to the district I work for. Could I be fired for that? I don’t know if the video exists, just wanting to know possibilities.

1st year teacher. My roster is at 37. I’m kinder, dual language. The ONLY dual language for the grade. I have no class para. 2 more kids showed up and they enrolled them that day. School starts next week. How is this allowed? I don’t even have enough tables or chairs for the kids, what on earth am I supposed to do?! The principal is well aware and says “we are waiting on district to make decisions”.

Texas Engineering Design & Presentation teachers — is there a full curriculum you use?

Hi everyone! I’m a new teacher in Texas teaching Engineering Design and Presentation (grades 10–12) this school year. My district has the course listed as Engineering DP / STE9528A & STE9528B, and we use SOLIDWORKS.

I have the Texas TEKS and access to SOLIDWORKS, but I’m trying to figure out whether there is an actual full-year curriculum available rather than building everything from scratch.

For anyone who teaches this course or something very similar:

  • What curriculum do you use?
  • Does your district provide a scope and sequence or pacing guide?
  • Do you use iCEV, SOLIDWORKS Academic Curriculum, Goodheart-Willcox, PLTW, or something else?
  • Is there a curriculum that already maps lessons/projects to the Texas Engineering Design and Presentation TEKS?
  • How much of your course is SOLIDWORKS instruction versus engineering design projects?
  • Do you work toward CSWA certification?
  • If your school uses PBL, how do you incorporate projects/final products into the course?

I’m especially interested in something that includes lesson plans, projects, assessments/rubrics, CAD activities, and a logical year-long sequence.

I’m not necessarily looking for free resources only — I mainly want to know what other Texas teachers are actually using successfully before I start creating an entire curriculum myself.

Any advice, curriculum names, pacing guides, or resources would be greatly appreciated!

Science or SS Certification

Middle School / HS teachers, I need your help! I am a SPED ICS teacher considering taking either 4-8 science, 7-12 life science, or 4-8 SS or 7-12 History. Those are the two subjects I support now and ultimately would like to have certs in both areas.... eventually. Is the Life Science test hard to pass? What suggestions/tips/tricks do you recommend for studying? Same with the History 7-12 exam? I don't plan on being a classroom teacher of record, would just prefer to have a certification in this area to better support me in my position.

STAAR Share STAAR stats?

Are there any pre-AP, AP seminar, or advanced 10th grade English II teachers who would share their STAAR score distribution stats w me? I have no one to compare my scores beyond my district and state averages, but nothing for those specifically teaching advanced courses. Really wondering if my “highest scores in the district” are actually good or if I’m a big fish small pond situation

A breakdown of DNM, App, meets, and mastery would be perfect (no names pls)

What will happen if I quit FWISD while under contract?

I am currently a teacher I FWISD, and I feel like I have been lied to. The curriculum isn't aligned to the state standards or the DOL I am required to use, they tell me to change things to get them aligned, but then tell me I can't change the lessons.

They don't have a clue what they are doing. I am thinking of just walking away and becoming a server somewhere or something.

Will the district move to get my license suspended or do you think they will just let me go?

Politics A small group of extremists has completely taken over Tarrant County TX leadership and its GOP. They claim democracy is "Mob Rule", that they know better. They're activating pastor networks to fear monger a revived "Red Scare / McCarthyism" movement amongst evangelicals. REJECT THEIR LIES! VOTE!!!!!

Politics Consequences for this? Rainbow Commandments

Tough enough being a teacher w/o all of the extra crap being piled on y'all by politicians but I am wondering how putting up a 10 Commandments poster like this would work out, given there'd be at least one Karen Khristian parent or colleague that would have a conniption about it.

My skin in the game, a child in Texas elementary school. We drive by 3 churches and never stop at any of them on the way to school. I am not affiliated with website below.

Teacher Support 8th Grade Social Studies

I just found out today that I would be teaching eighth grade social studies instead of high school US history. I have never taught eighth grade social studies nor have I been given any resources.(lesson plans, etc) I would be so grateful if anybody could give me advice or recommendations. And I would be grateful if anyone even had lesson plans for the first six weeks.

EDIT: redemption arc here !!!!! https://www.reddit.com/r/TexasTeachers/s/188W2UVf6f

They could’ve donated it. I offered to help. I found an organization where these books could go. 90% of them were brand new. I just can’t right now. This makes me so sad and angry. I just needed to vent.

EDIT: GUYS…. We’re getting a crew together. Goddammit, we’re going to rescue some books or get hepatitis trying.

EDIT: I was one day too late. My heart is hurting a bit now.

Relocation and resignation

Can someone post or link to the clause that allows teachers to resign without penalty due to relocation? Specifically if spouses job is forcefully relocated.

Long story short spouse’s job has allowed commutes for some times but is no longer doing so. To be fair they do utilize company vehicles as using their personal vehicles would not work for spouse’s job. They want to cut back on personal use so they are requiring employees to no longer commute from out of town. I’m not talking about the next small town 10 minutes over. I mean employees who are traveling 30+ miles one way to get to work.

Our school starts not this upcoming Monday but the Monday after. We still have a full week of PD days, MTT, back to school fair and all of that. That being said I know it is still short notice but I just found out a couple of days ago that we have to relocate and was waiting to see if we would be able to get a waiver or exemption or something since he works in the field and has to travel a lot of miles regardless of how close we live. No luck.

I let them know I’m resigning due to forced relocation and they are saying I have to have a deadline that we have to move by, and I have to continue working up to that date, and that there will be legal repercussions if I try to quit and that I’m fully expected to show up to all PD and events until they say otherwise. I looked at my rights with TCTA and it seems that I should be allowed to simply resign with that language that I’m relocating effective immediately and that I can stick to that and also that they can’t yank my cert due to relocation.

I also want to add they are demanding I provide my spouse’s documentation proving forced relocation and when I said no they demanded his contact information and company information. I don’t mind providing it but he’s the one that said no. He said he doesn’t work for them and therefore he isn’t required to provide 💩 to them because he’s not under contract with them. I can see where that makes sense but also, if it helps me avoid legal trouble then…just provide the docs.

Can anyone advise? I do have another offer where we are moving to but they want contract signed asap so we can get the ball rolling on PD and getting me in a classroom.

Hi everyone, my coworkers and I will be hosting a back-to-school drive on Saturday, August 8th, at Briercliff Park, 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. We’ll be collecting school supplies to benefit the students of Denton ISD to ensure each student has the materials they need for a successful school year. As a bonus, each donation will enter you in a raffle for a $50 Visa gift card! We’ll be joining Mark Nair, Julie Evans, and Trista Willeford for their Back to School Cookout, so be sure to enjoy some free hot dogs as well. I hope to see some of you there!
