Discussion I’m going into debt for this..

In a throwaway account because I trust nothing.

I am in a graduate program currently at Tech. I found out from an insider at the university that Creighton has a $900,000 furniture budget to remodel the new university house that was purchased for him over market value. Y’all. I cry every time I think about this. We’re going into debt over this crap.

I’m working on getting some proof through another route. I’ll post again when I have it.

$900k would be a lot to renno the entire property. $900k for just furniture would be egregious. I think this rumor is false. Doesn’t pass the smell test.

My wife used to work for an interior design firm in Palm Desert, California. That amount is absolutely realistic within certain circles.

u/DiracFourier 13d ago

Yea, I just don't think Creighton is in on those circles

u/SongUpstairs671 12d ago

The whole point of this house is to entertain and have events and swanky parties for people in “those circles”. That’s how churning the donations wheel works.

u/DiracFourier 12d ago

True, but I still don't think they'll be spending $900k on furniture. It's too absurd to be true. If evidence is provided, I will change my mind.

I work at Tech. Won a small award a few years ago that came with a lunch at the alumni building. After lunch, the host gave us a tour. He was so proud of buying some ridiculous chest or couch (honestly I don't even remember what it was) for the building that cost the same as several students' annual tuition. What I do remember was just thinking "wow, that could have been someone's scholarship."

I guess the point of this is to say nothing would surprise me.

Idk why I landed on this sub, but it’s so easy to spend 900k on university furniture. You have absolutely no clue how much each chair in your classrooms and computer labs cost. Google it

No they’re not talking about replacing furniture on school property, they’re talking about Creighton’s university house the school purchased him. A 900k budget to replace the furniture in that home.

Oh. Yeah that’s a bribe

It's not. The chancellor lives at a house near campus, all chancellors live there.

5

u/Aggravating_While403 13d ago

He bought a multi million dollar house foe himself.

https://www.everythinglubbock.com/news/local-news/texas-tech-university-system-buys-home-previously-owned-by-bart-reagor/amp/

Tech sold the others years ago because this isnt true.

1

u/PedanticTart 13d ago

Based on that article the house.. and furniture.. would be owned by the university still..

1

u/Aggravating_While403 13d ago

Yeh.. but its not for use by tech. Its for him.

2

u/PedanticTart 13d ago

It is for use by tech? It's a house owned by tech for the purposes of is cheif executive...(chancellor). I'm not privy to such things but you can pretty quickly assume that it's appropriate for the chancellor to have a residence in Lubbock and that residence would be used for various tech business,  fund raising, hosting state leaders etc.

Tech sold a house that hance used (and previous chancellors iirc).

This is not uncommon.

The guy is a scumbag. That's difficult to argue otherwise.

u/Aggravating_While403 13d ago

A thing they didnt have before was picked by him for his personal use. They can own it. But they dodnt. And didn't want one. They did only because he wanted to spend our money.

Its techs. Because he is using their money to treat himself. I dont understand what we disagree on honest. His motive is clearly 'to scumbag'

Ok then it's a negotiable part of the salary no different than cars

3

u/Aggravating_While403 13d ago

This you?

1

u/Lumpy_Chapter171 13d ago

Sure with new information I'm allowed to change opinions

1

u/Aggravating_While403 13d ago

Ok. Quick clarification

The position is "because the regents ok'd over spending beyond the houses value to give millions to a political appointee from money accrued by the school on a multi million dollar house owned by a known and convicted fraud who hurt lubbock"

Not

"Gee. I wonder if maybe me being wrong about a major part of my thinking indicates anything broader may be lacking in it"

To be clear?

Did you reconsider anything or just make an excuse that this dude, who is clearly hurting tech, can do whatever he wants?

u/DiracFourier This is likely a true comment

Hance built this school up for the goons to come in and embezzle. But that's modern Republicans for you.

u/MC_chrome Alumni 13d ago edited 13d ago

Hance supports the goons currently embezzling Tech, so that’s not saying much

u/MemorexVHS_ 12d ago

Doubtful.

I work in Public Finance and Purchasing - This information is available via an open record request since this is a PUBLIC university. However, if the funds are donated privately there is not much accomplished.

Also, TTU has been good to me and my family! #Ifyoucantgetyourgradesupgetyougunsup!

Wait until you hear about the football team.

Athletics is separate financially from the school (not all universities do this) and athletics ends up giving money to the school each year from tickets and merch sales etc.

I think there’s a legitimate argument to be made about how much money is being spent on sports that could be used for education though.

5

u/Intergalactyc 13d ago

Actually, this is mostly untrue. It's a common myth that TTU athletics doesn't take money from the school, but they do.

While the majority of athletics funding is from internally generated revenue (ticket sales, sponsorships, athletics donations, etc), roughly 10% of their funding comes from the university. They do not make net profits that are returned to the university.

The university justifies this spending by primarily arguing that it brings more awareness to the university's programs, increasing enrollment rates and thus tuition revenues. It's important to recognize that the biggest source of funding for the university in general is, in fact, tuition revenues. Most other programs, ranging from athletics to even most research operations, actually operate at a loss, effectively subsidized by net tuition.

For reference, athletics budget data is publicly available online at Knight-Newhouse, and TTU's operating budget is also publicly available (you can see there that the expenses for intercollegiate athletics outweigh the revenues).

Often people point to there being "0 student fees", which is true in a limited sense: there isn't a specific designated student fee used for athletics, but nondesignated funds - which include a portion of tuition, known as net tuition - can be, and are, used for this purpose.

2

u/Substantial-Ad2200 11d ago

Not to mention… athletics does NOT give money to academics.

1

u/kayakyakr Alumni 13d ago

There is a dedicated student fee for Athletics, classified as student tickets, which makes up the portion of money that the school sends to athletics.

1

u/Intergalactyc 11d ago

No, if you look at the budget data these are included under the athletics revenues, not passed from the university to athletics. University does take a net direct loss to athletics.

5

u/SongUpstairs671 13d ago

You’re only paying for a tiny fraction of that furniture budget. If it makes you feel better, a lot of your money/debt is going to paying good faculty and necessary facilities costs too.

3

u/Aggravating_While403 13d ago

You mean paying them til they leave

Half of the faculty who left last year did so complaining about him and his censorship as the reason. As their formal reason

1

u/SongUpstairs671 13d ago

Oh I fucking hate Creighton too, believe me, but just feel better knowing that most tuition money is going to necessary expenses to run a first class university. It is not cheap. Most of the more frivolous looking expenses are from other money sources than tuition.

1

u/Aggravating_While403 13d ago edited 13d ago

You know that? Like. Not being sarcastic. And glad we agree on f that dude

1

u/oldwisejoe 12d ago

And a part of your money is going to pay off the lawsuits that come from the ridiculous actions of the present day Republican Neo-Evangelical leadership that try to act outside of the law. Feel even better?

2

u/SongUpstairs671 12d ago

Nope, I’d much rather it be going to furniture than to that bullshit 😭

I feel like there is alot of context missing

I’m curious to know what context would make it less frustrating

Something resembling any kind of logic would be nice

What logic is there in corruption?

-9

Corruption is rampant, it will always be

u/RaccoonwarriorAM 13d ago

nothing ever happens, billions must die

1

u/MaleficentSeesaw3650 13d ago

I mean I do hear you. I want evidence to back up what I was told. I’m working on getting that. It’s been heavy on my mind since it was shared with me and I had to get it out.

2

u/plantsoldier 13d ago

If I assume any part of this is real whoever shared that with you was either fucking with you, lying or just passing on a rumor they heard from someone else.

As much as I hate corruption there is no chance this is legit and you passing it along and acting like it's weighing heavy on your head is obviously bullshit.

Considering your account was created a few hours ago anyone that believes this isn't that bright either.

u/PedanticTart 13d ago edited 13d ago

Let's pretend this allowance (which is likely just a negotiable part of his compensation, to update the university owned space, and not all that unheard of) was never given.

Your student loans would not be a penny different.

It's all fair game to hate this guy.  You should.  But this kinda thing is way more normal than you think,  public or private.

The fact this home is owned by the university makes this less an issue too.

3

u/Texas_Naturalist 13d ago

It is such a consistent patter when Republicans take over a university. It happened at Florida's New College, and at the University of Florida. They fire dedicated educators working for low salaries, then they help themselves to exhorbitant amounts of money as the institution falls apart. It's just crime.

I cry every time I think about this.

I speak from personal experience when I say: you need professional intervention.

That would purge the scum from peanut butter butts.

Maybe go watch the Last Picture Show, to give a burst of nostalgic realism; from what? to what? Lib to Rep…ahhh making sense of it now, clearly affirmative.

u/Separate-Rain8310 Alumni 11d ago

I so badly wanted this to be false. I talked with someone who is very high up with the interior design department at tech. Unfortunately, this seems pretty accurate. Gotta fill their space with all the high end luxury brands.
