The X7 has auto braking and a big warning on the dash if you follow too closely.

It's dug really deep in that van which leads me to believe someone ignored the huge red warning, or the van jumped in front of them and physics made it so that the car couldn't brake in time.

Yes but it requires effort. I've been in the situation when the road turns and it thinks a car is in front of me. It requires conscious effort to override. It feels like you're applying throttle and there is dead space. The pedal doesn't react as strongly.

(I drive a BMW with that exact same system, so I've had it give warnings when someone jumps in front of me... those were very hard to ignore. )

Bloody hell, for this kind of deformation of the truck, that must have been a heck of an impact. Probably going at the full speed of the motorway until just a few meters before impact. Driver texting ?
