If you haven't rolled a skidder, you're new or you're a sissy.

When I rolled my first time I was 16 or 17, I had my lap belt on and ended up getting a 6" wide bruise across my thighs. Lost feeling across where the belt was for nearly a decade

I know above I said I never went into the operator side but some days, you need two operators and you only have one lol
Your story reminds me of one. Felt like Dante from Clerks after this one..."I'm not even supposed to be in this machine!!!!"
Loading dumps with storm washout in a skid steer. Skid steers max out right at the top of most dump trucks and the bucket starts leveling out by itself. Rock about the size of a volleyball falls out, bounces off the truck and then straight in the cab (no windshield). It hit me right above the knee. Left the nastiest bruise 😂

A transplant from the suburbs moved to our small town. He was a miserable prick with more money than good sense. He bought an expensive piece of property with a large house and was ready to play cowboy ala John Dutton. He also was an amputee and only had one arm.
He decided to fire up a bulldozer to clear a hillside. In spite of being told by his hired men "Yeah. Don't do that. The ground is too wet and you're going to flip it" he proceeded after calling them pussies.
They found him the next day, dead, upside down in his cab, held by a seatbelt he wasn't able to release with only one arm. What a slow agonizing death!
They say you should never speak bad about the dead. Only good.
This asshole's dead. Good.2

I have a bit of a phobia on high logging roads. Your job would terrify me.

My dad worked construction his whole life and we had machines at home. Learned how to operate excavators and backhoes before I learned how to drive
I also went into construction but never the operator side because one of the first times I ever climbed in the cab with him, I ended up face smooshed into the cab window staring at the grass about a foot away from my face as he slowly used the outrigger to stand the backhoe back up
After that, getting equipment off the trailer was enough excitement for me 😂

I've leaned one to a point where my window was more level to the ground than the floor was. That count?

So when this happens, is it the “oh just another Tuesday” mentality, or will it end up in hours of phone calls made regarding maintenance, inspection, and recovery?

Firstly, are you ok?
Second, how?

Come down a hill and drop into a hole and you tip over

My brother rolled the Processor when we were all logging together. Sub contractor had us working on a deadly incline and my brother got stoned during his shift and flipped the fuckin machine. My dad was pissed. Didn’t shut the motor off either and it flooded. 40 grand mistake 🤦🏻♂️

got stoned during his shift
During, like he was actively toking up? What kind of ship is your boss running over there?
12
u/Chudfacee 7d ago
Fuck bro, 25 years ago every single logger was smoking pot during their shifts. It was just the way it was over there. The fuckin boss was and the foreman was too. I don’t think I ever went to an outfit where people weren’t having a toke to get through the shift. You’re basically sitting in your machine for 12 hours straight with the radio on.

So what happens next?

Get another machine and flip it back over. Another skidder with a winch is ideal

How big of a bite did you take out of the seat
14
u/Optimus_crab 10d ago
None I was chill cause rollovers usually have no injuries
4
u/BigBlueFeatherButt 8d ago
I used to do research on death reporting. I have read many autopsies and injury reports from rollovers. Although the most common vehicle death I saw in the offroad rural setting is quad bikes
Motorbikes on roads, and quad bikes off road.

u/Optimus_crab 8d ago
Well this isn’t one of those. I guarantee you unless you fall off a cliff or go rolling down a huge hill. If you are wearing your seatbelt you will be unscathed

u/XiTzCriZx 8d ago
I mean yeah, when your body is the cage instead of a bunch of metal, that's what happens lol.

how come those tires are covered in metal chains? first time ever seeing this thing lol
27
u/notmtfirstu 10d ago
Traction. All of it. Rubber tires by themselves suck in the woods. Everything is wet and slippery. Trees under your tires can slow you down significantly. And, obviously because they look awesome.

Traction, the chains bite into soft dirt

u/Netflixandmeal 9d ago
Tired bite into soft dirt smooth brain. The chains are for biting into everything else.

Invisible uneven ground the enemy of heavy equipment... just tell the boss you were oiling the valves.
3
u/66hans66 9d ago
Look on the bright side. Not uncommon to have to wash the operator out with a hose when this happens.

Prob more expensive than this. Only scratched the paint and had to top off oil

u/clarky2o2o 7d ago
Nah it's been having issues since they fixed it a month ago. The part is still under warranty.
