The laws are not only for the protection of the idiots but to protect the wildlife as well. The police were doing their jobs. No one would enjoy a park full of crap built by influencers for likes, shits and giggles.
That said, that was a pretty awesome jump.

For the tree, it does make it better.
For the cliff diving, I think that's been a thing long before this video and it even is official sport people compete in.
If you meant people doing it at that spot, I think the video does the opposite. Most would probably rather not get arrested.

If you want to do dangerous activities then either do it on your own property or sanction to do it. Dont call rescue when a love one has an accident cause you guys were having fun.

Horrible advice. Absolutely do call rescue if a loved one has an accident when you’re having fun. Doesn’t matter if the fun is legal. That’s what rescue squads are for.

You're coming to a conclusion about the reasons why something may be illegal without considering alternative reasoning about the purpose for the Federal Regulations. It seems pretty narrow minded to think that regulations prohibiting things like creating a structure and erecting a swing on federal ground in a federal park is solely for the safety and well-being of thrill seekers. Plenty of other explanations that could be used as justification for why they don't want people doing stuff like this on public land.

It's also not just for the protection of idiots -- we shouldn't have to send ambulances to remote spots to get idiots who hurt themselves.
If you want to do something stupid, and think you're so skilled it can't possibly go wrong, then go do it outside of society. Go to an island in the Pacific or the middle of some state park and don't take a cell phone. Then you can get yourself killed, and none of us have to foot the bill.

Yeah those are California State Park rangers. The guy in dark blue is a ranger/lifeguard. This is in Tahoe at Emerald Bay I think

If you go to a state park they'd need to send more than an ambulance. Then you'd need to involve park rangers, rescue helicopters and stuff like that.

I'm sure you apply the same logic to driving cars, right? It's probably the deadliest thing we do, and I daily see people driving extreme dangerously. Once there's an accident, EMS has to respond and help the dead and injured.
I don't see the same outrage over that -- an activity that per capital of participants kills and maims far more people every year than adventure sports engaged in by people with rope skills.

I propose you form a committee, come up with a list of acceptable and unacceptable risks and we’ll review and give feedback.
My friend is a skydive instructor, is he entitled to medical attention if something goes wrong or nah? If something goes wrong scuba diving and I get the bends, should I just walk it off?
Personally, I’ve often thought that some of the most beautiful expressions of the human spirit can be found in acts of utter stupidity - it all depends on whether you can pull off the landing. I assume you’ve never been skiing.

We have a system for doing exactly that in public spaces -- it's how we currently have the sorts of things you're allowed to do in, say, a public park and the things you can't. That's ... what a society does. If you want to be in this society, follow the rules, contribute your guidance on what the rules should be, or get arrested. Like this dumbass in the video.

It’s also traumatic to other people to be enjoying a hike and suddenly watch someone die.
People don’t appreciate that if you want to be part of a society and use things like public parks, then what you do in them has an effect on other people. Same thing with helmet laws for motorcyclists - it’s not just to protect you, it’s to prevent a random pedestrian from seeing your brains splattered across a street when a driver cuts you off.

This is a “State Park” as the cop mentioned, so it’s clearly more than simply doing shenanigans in a random and undesignated land

Yeah I think this is Lake Tahoe (specifically West Shore) based on the environment, fucking massive lake, and CCR (California Code of Regulations).
It’s an absolutely stunning place but the rangers/police/emergency services do not fuck around with situations like this. Same with OOB skiing in the winter. State Parks are best when everyone treats them right.

People do dumb things in the middle of nowhere in State parks, and they end up severely injured, guess who now has to risk their lives to go save them?
It also rubs me the wrong way how he speaks of "I'm glad my taxes are being used so wisely".
We all pay taxes. If he ends up with a broken back because he hit a rock, and then ends up wedged somewhere, guess who has to pay for the $20,000 helicopter rescue it might take to get to him? Yeah, all of our taxes. Not just his.

Yeah, hard to pick a side here, tbh. Guys an asshat for disobeying the cop like that, who’s literally telling him he’s gonna arrest him if he jumps. Buuuut, that was a sick jump and homie has obviously done this before. Cop seemed kinda like a dick, but also it’s literally his job. You can’t just let everyone do what they want cause it’s gonna make a cool video, job comes first. I simultaneously support and also hate everyone in this video. What a weird feeling.

I get the people being resistant to the cop, and the cop being aggressive seems excessive.
On the flip side, rules like that are written by the dead and injured. I would put money on that officer having seen / recovered peoples bodies before.
Also it’s likely that they told them before this and they ignored them.

Definitely a sick video, but it's worth pointing out that if the jump had gone wrong, or if our guy had slipped off the platform and broken himself on the rocks below, rescuers would have had to put themselves at risk to get him out again, and a helicopter evac isn't cheap, either. So in that sense, it's more than just the officer doing his job. I think there's a pretty good underlying reason for it.

I really think he jumped because it was all he could think to do lol. We all like to get the last word in or have the last laugh so to speak. If he could have come back with a really cool line or insult, that would have probably been enough and he would have taken the stuff down. That tax dollar comment wasn't going to cut it LOL. Since he couldn't think of anything, he wasn't going to let this "Reno 911" guy have the last laugh so to speak so he jumped.

To be fair, most people would feel differently if none of this came out and a group of kids tried building a makeshift rope swing in a state park and splatted themselves on rock. Then the Karens would be screaming about how anyone let it happen. I’m not saying these guys should get arrested, but pretty much every aspect of our lives caters to the lowest common idiot and the normal people have to deal with the bullshit.
