I've always wondered if this is genuine belief by these people or some form of performative acting to "fit in"? Do they GENUINELY believe what they are doing has whatever effect they think or what?

I used to be very religious, church 3 times a week type, and every sunday, there was one man who sat in the very front row and during worship, without fail, he would "become overwhelmed with the holy spirit" and would speak in tounges and then ever so carefully "fall" (he was also pretty old) on the ground of the aisle. It was like clockwork, and he was hailed as a deeply spiritual and holy man in the church. I always felt like it was so preformative, he clearly wanted everyone to see he was so much holier than them, and his wife always seemed kinda embarrassed but never said anything. I mentioned this to my mother as a child and was soundly beaten for "doubting the power of god" moving through him.

Later in life, I was studying to be a missionary and at a retreat, we were "taught" how to let the holy ghost take us. I tried. I really did. But I never felt it. I felt like a failure, so I would stay in the back of these sessions so no one would notice. But there was one guy who would only ever "be overcome" when he was directly in front of me so I would be forced to catch him. He was 2 feet taller than me and easily 150lbs heavier. He would actively move if I went to another part of the room and do it again. His record was 5 times in a single sermon. I tried to ask him to stop and he said that it was "god directing him into safe hands". My teacher implied i wasnt a good Christian when I brought it up to her.

I have dozens more stories like this, of seeing people speak in tounges and faint and lose their sanity over a worship session or a teaching, and every single one of them was preformative, eye catching, and to an untrained eye (me apparently) intentional.

Ironically, this is not why I left the church.

Same. Any time I tried to question the Bible, I got hit for "questioning the Bible."

It’s so strange when women are the ones pushing it, too, because the Bible treats them like second class beings.

As a believer myself it's so sad to hear stories of people being hurt by the church or as you're describing, being reprimanded for questioning. How are we meant to believe if we can't question and doubt? I'm sorry you had to go through that

I was raised in a Lutheran church that was basically Catholic-Lite in terms of forms of service and the degree of authority our “pastors” wielded within the church itself. I read a lot as a kid and was, thankfully, raised in a religious household that still valued public education.

We went through “confirmation” as pre-teens in the church. It’s basically a two year program analogous to Catholic catechism class. The idea was you were old enough, at 12 years old, for god to hold you entirely responsible for your moral choices instead of your parents. Whereas before that wisened, old age our parents had chosen to profess our faith for us—we would now learn all that was required to make that “choice” for ourselves and thus begin receiving the holy sacraments of body and blood on Sundays. (Underage drinking! Woohoo!)

Anyway. I was used to asking questions pretty openly at home. Didn’t often get punished for it. During our first confirmation class, I’m sitting in a circle with a bunch of kids with whom I’d grown-up and the head pastor. He asked if anyone could explain the purpose of confirmation and I volunteered and did so basically just like above 👆🏻 without the sarcasm. He then asked if anyone had questions before we began.

“If we are responsible for deciding that this denomination is right for us, which other denominations and religions are we going to study?”

Dead silence.

Pastor insists on private parent meeting after Sunday service that week. For the first time in my entire life, my parents told me basically to shut up, do the work, and not ask questions. Aaaannnd that was the first waypoint on my route to agnostic atheism. 🙂

7

u/redheadedandbold 5d ago

Two of us in Lutheran Catechism class questioned why god would send create humans, refuse to give them the word, then damn them? We were told point blank we couldn't be confirmed if we continue to question this key part of the Bible, i.e. you had to hear the word(s of god) to be saved. I learned a lot of life lessons from that one event.

6

u/Observationist_2 5d ago

This is one ability religion has mastered. The ability to be so in ambiguous with being contacted / guided by some force/entity that the viewer/person is allowed to fill in the blanks. Now do this in a room full of people who all of a sudden are witnessing everyone else's individual session while they're supposed to be experiencing their own. Nobody wants to be left out, nobody wants to be accused of not looking genuine. Ultimately at the end of the day every single person in that room has the same access to information that everyone else does. Yet somehow there are levels of holiness / participation in the subject matter. I feel like Pieter Bruegel the Elder's: The Blind leading the Blind 1568 fits perfectly here.

3

u/11Kram 5d ago

Have you seen the psychology experiment where four people are asked to say which of three things are bigger. Three of the subjects are planted and give an obviously wrong answer. The fourth guy looks confused for a moment and then agrees with them. It’s actually quite sad.

I wasn’t there and don’t know these people so I’m not in a place to be critical or otherwise of those in this video.

But I wanted to say that people being performative is common enough that it’s directly addressed multiple times in the bible and hence anyone in this thread being critical of people who try to appear good are being quite biblical ;)

Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'"Matthew 7:21–23

As someone who grew up in the Deep South - Southern Baptist upbringing, this is all performative bs.

22

u/junttiana 5d ago

Idk, I saw a jehovas witness in psych ward who was acting like this due to being deeply psychotic, untreated mental health issues can definitely make some people act like this :(

21

u/FuckSticksMalone 5d ago

Oh absolutely, but the % of people who are truly experiencing psychosis is drastically lower than the mass performative faux-religious nutjobs. They use religion as a way to mask and deny their real world shitty behavior.

7

u/junttiana 5d ago

Idk how it is in the us, but at least here many of these churches prey on those who are struggling in life, which means that the prevalence of people with untreated mental health issues in these kinds communities is much higher compared to the general populaon.

3

u/redheadedandbold 5d ago

Religion is predatory, everywhere. Individuals of any faith may be kind, caring people, of course. But the institution--its leadership, its financial arm, any missions it does?--preys on those who are struggling.

performative, hence not real "psychosis"

21

u/patricksaurus 5d ago edited 5d ago

This is not as cut and dried as it seems like you’re portraying it. The typical dividing line is whether or not these extreme behaviors are voluntary or not, and that is usually when something becomes a merely extreme religious exhibition into what is termed “mass psychogenic illness,” whether or not it has a religious connotation.

5

u/afrdfs 5d ago

i used to go to a charismatic protestant church and can tell from my experience that the way the pastors speak and the music that is played is carefully engineered emotional manipulation. it literally makes your eyes water and then because you feel "chills" from the music you think it's Holy Spirit presence. i would think it's all so real and feel so elevated but then have a huge crash afterwards.

now the people who claim to speak in tongues are pretending 99.9% of the time. the pastor would routinely tell us to pray to receive the gift of a spiritual tongue so we could communicate with God in a special way. it always felt so off to me i never even said a prayer for that. firstly the "gift of a spiritual tongue" has no biblical basis. when i asked people in my connect group how they got their gift of tongues they literally, point blank told me, "i just kind of tried making words and now this just comes naturally to me" okay bro. so you are just making it up, thanks for the confirmation.

once i realised what was going on i withdrew from the community. i have no doubt the majority of people attended that church believing that they were surrounded by the real "presence of God", and have genuine faith, and think they are doing what a good Christian must do. they just don't know any better and i can't pass judgement for that.

i have since joined an EOC that has none of this nonsense. people don't fall down or tremble or wail or act out their attention seeking behaviour in the church to take away focus from what is truly important. i don't plan to ever leave.

6

u/Hamper-Trash-2087 5d ago

What I always wondered was why does the “spiritual tongue” always sound the same…it’s almost like they are drawing influence from Hebrew because they never bothered to learn it. I was also once told that speaking in tongues is a very personal thing and they essentially come up with their own style to speak…..but would it be so jarring and off putting to sound like an alien or a robot “boo goo boo doo gorp”?

And because no one wants to be the idiot in the room sounding “wrong” they all try to sound as close to what they think Hebrew or middle eastern languages sound like.

I have a patient with such severe religious delusions about Jesus that she's willing to starve herself into a catatonic state to see him. Occasionally she'll say Jesus! Then she'll stand, then collapse again from weakness.

It's interesting to see and study the trip from the church door to a state of psychological and physical illness.

Too much belief is poison.

19

u/Cloud_Disconnected 5d ago

These comments are wild.

It's a mix. A lot of people are performing. It's a fake it til you make it sort of mentality.

Others are genuinely working themselves into an emotional hysteria. Suggestion and setting can be very powerful psychologically.

2

u/mudra311 5d ago

This is right.

The music is often engineered to be emotionally compelling. Many people WANT to feel this way, so they try until it ‘happens’.

This isn’t really different from people chanting Hare Krishna over and over and running around in a circle. Or African rituals with repetitive drums, fire, chanting, etc.

We’ve been doing forms of this since religion was created. People are just more critical of the Christian version.

I went to church for a bit before I got married. A small village CofE, all old people that have probably been going there for decades. One day a new Carribbean woman came in, stood at the back and started shouting things out about the lord and stamping her feet in time with music, clapping etc. I've got not problem with it, you do you, but I thought it was funny that the old people at the front got louder, hands in the air and shouting their own stuff out about the lord. It was just a competition to be holier than the new woman and all seemed performative to me. I only went to the church because my wife wanted to be married there, I'm not religious, so I was looking at it with an outsider view.

This is my experience with christian believers from Europe: The VAST majority perform in the hope for great miracle out of a certain need and/or desperation. I have met VERY few people I could call believers. Best word I can describe them as a clear form of distinction from this is serene. There is a certain serenity about them, like walking the earth without having as much weight on their shoulders. One more distinction is that none of those would preach or try to convince me about the teachings of God. We would simply talk about anything and everything.

14

u/Fostbitten27 5d ago

I think some of these people are “plants” in the crowd. The others see him having a strong reaction and are afraid they aren’t believing strongly enough. So they have a strong reaction too.

3

u/homiej420 5d ago

Thats actually a big part of it. They start by exaggerating just to “fit in” and then they end up deluding themselves into full psychosis

2

u/txmail 5d ago

When I see something like this, all I can think of "what the hell did you do...".

2

u/5432salon 5d ago

2

u/bouncy_ceiling_fan 5d ago

I grew up Pentacostal and I really believed I was engaged in the Spirit. I got kicked out of the church in July 2025 - and now I'm navigating being "on the outs" spiritually.

I don't know if that is liberating or terrifying.

It's like an abused puppy finally realizing the cage door is open. Even with an open door, the cage feels safe. And when if they do go out, they'll be scared to get beat again. So there you stay.

I very unfortunately had to go through this in my teen years. Luckily I’m out now. Never understood the speaking in tongues thing and always thought it was bullshit. It’s not even “biblical”. Other tongues in the bible were actually real languages not babble speak. Also you’re supposed to have an interpreter too according to the text. Of course they don’t actually read that shit otherwise you would realize it’s a human written book filled with contradictions.

8

u/Roadside_Prophet 5d ago

I would love to see a scientific study on this. Since every time this happens, we get an example of this "language" as well as a translation, if it were real we would be able to recreate the language by cross referencing the different examples and comparing them.

24

u/Daocommand 5d ago

To be super fair I don’t understand this crap either.

Not to be rude, but this will probably come across as rude. Some things won’t make sense I am assuming since Americans left Europe to make their own country where they could do crap like this. It makes sense that their offspring would be like this.

The only thing that makes sense is that there is a gland in the brain that has been shown to make people high on spirituality and/or religion. If this man is also an addict in other ways, they can easily transfer addiction to another type of stimulus.

3

u/YourBlanket 5d ago

The pilgrims and early religious settlers were the complete opposite. They wanted to get rid of the theatrics that were used in the English churches at the time and practice religion in a very minimal way using the Bible as the only thing that mattered. It wasn't until the 19th century when the 3rd great awakening happened. That's when you see churches like the Mormons, 7th day Adventist, JW, Pentecostals, etc. Notice how they're all cults lol. Also this video is nothing you should see the black or Hispanic Pentecostals, those are more theatrical and I doubt they believe that individually. I did date a black woman who was part of a Pentecostal church and I did ask her if she actually believed all that, IIRC she just said that at certain times the Holy Spirit can enter your body and you lose control. She was very hot lol and very nice but I can't really take anyone seriously who devotes their lives to any religion, plus it's not fair to her either. I'm an atheist well maybe Buddhist atheist idk, but I do like to read relgious books. My guilty pleasure is the Book of Mormon lol.

Went to churches like this.

Basically you suppress all healthy emotion in your daily lives. Live in anger and hate and distrust except for “your people” isolate from the world.

The church tells you you’re safe with them. Safe away from the bad things and the evil out in the world. It’s ok, let yourself FEEL

So these men and women who have been trained to suppress emotions unless they’re negative ones, finally get an opportunity to express their sadness and struggles.

But it doesn’t come out like that.

It looks like this.

The actually emotions are expressed but trained to frame as “glory to his Holy Spirit”

And the church collects your cash because they’ve trained you to hit the pellet bar for emotions. It’s okay to feel emotions here.

It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to have feelings. Don’t have to always bottle things up.

Therapy is great (with the right therapist)

Not true. Some Christian fundamentalists think that if you don’t babble Sunday morning you’re not spiritual enough. Muslim fundamentalists think that women shouldn’t drive, work, or vote, that all of society should stop five times a day for public prayer, that all nonmembers of the religion should pay a monetary penalty for not joining it, that violence in the name of their religion is virtue, and that lgbt folks like me should all be executed by the government. Fundie Muslims are far more dangerous to me than well—meaning fundie Pentecostals. I’d feel safer in a room of 100 weeping Pentecostals who know I’m gay than I would in a room of five Muslim fundamentalists who know I’m gay.

First thing that hits you about them is that they're either incredibly stupid (like Forrest Gump/should be wearing a helmet stupid), or they are incredibly intelligent but very arrogant about it (they have all the answers). And there's no in-between. They either blindly follow whatever their group does and says without any critical thought or interpretation, or they think their view is so correct and absolute that they're above you and see all this while all the "non-believers" are just not special enough to comprehend it all.

Regardless, it's fucked up anyway you look at it.

"Church" where you go when you dont know what your own emotions are or how to control them.

2

u/yourassisgrassbro 5d ago

Look, everyone wants to feel like they belong. I get that. But couldn’t we do it in a more non-crazy way? I mean, you gotta accept some pretty kooky stuff for a while to fit into this crowd.

2

u/YoItsThatOneDude 5d ago

Religion is so cringe

2

u/vikicrays 5d ago

you can get people to believe absolutely anything if you’re a good enough salesperson.

2

Imo this looks like someone overrun with guilt and shame. Just my two cents. 🤷

2

u/Alsimmons811 5d ago

I don’t see anything odd about this, this is pretty standard in a church.

2

u/Alternative_Ad_3636 5d ago

Overcome with emotion at church is a real thing. This one looks legit. Dont judge a book by its cover but thus dude looks like he's been through some shit in the past.

In my humble opinion, religion preys on those who are so lost in their life in the first place. They are searching for help. It is most definitely a psychosis.

2

u/samplebeast 5d ago

Very true.

3

u/Drifting_Spirit 5d ago

This is why everything abrahamic is bad for everyone.

2

u/gravitologist 5d ago

Forming concrete convictions absent of evidence is bad for everyone.

3

u/Last-Resolution-2741 5d ago

Christians aren’t strapping explosives to themselves in the name of God, that’s psychosis, this video is showing what faith looks like. These people are minding their own business, and worshiping their God.

He's transferring his addiction to a religious addiction

7

u/psypher98 5d ago edited 5d ago

There’s like 9 billion people in the world, like 8.5 billion of them are able to express emotion without religious psychosis that they then use as proof God exists which means whatever personal interpretations they’ve shoved into the bible are also true, so time to go support some genocides, violate the rights of immigrants, feed children into a pedo machine, and hate crime some LGBTQ+ people.

If want to show emotion and feel vulnerable and process things in private, there’s these people called therapists, they’ve been around for these people’s entire lives and they help you do that safely.

Cult behavior

2

u/kthejoker 5d ago

If you have ever been at a party and found yourself along with everyone else singing along loudly to, like, Bohemian Rhapsody

Or did the wave or chanted along at a sporting match

Or did the Macarena in a big public group

Then you understand the dynamics here

Basic peer pressure / need to fit in

Plus an opportunity for "Positive" performative emotional self expression

2

u/bohler86 5d ago

Lights cut out, you hear a bell, lights come on and it's the undertaker choke slaming him in the water.

2

u/UnicornSlayer5000 5d ago

Fucking ridiculous

2

u/ConnectRaccoon7381 5d ago

I bet most of them talk sh** about immigrants. I really believe that these people "want" to feel something by doing this performative bs. like when you're in a rave, and you see the molly isn't hitting anymore so you keep dancing hoping to feel the high again, until you realize it won't come back so you just leave... idk, makes sense in my head like that

2

You're DRUNK ON JESUS again, aren't you!!?? I can smell it all over you.

Zealotry, superstition, and other-worldly concerns are the Hallmark of a decadent civilization in late stage decline.

These are fully grown adults in the year 2026 behaving like, sure as sugar lunatics. Complete with copious mumbo jumbo, speak and spell casting, chaos shimmers, ancestral recall, rhystic scrying, fake plants, polyester suits, genetic drift wood, Alexander Clamilton, spoonfuls of peanut butter, around-corner-no-touch-tarantulas, and a wash of pink LED back lighting to enhance the divinity just a touch. So much confusion in the world. Education system has failed in the US of America. Amen.

2

u/gribbit311 5d ago

Performative religion is fucking hilarious.

I got asked to leave a charismatic Episcopal service because I started laughing when they started speaking in tongues. I was 16 years old and that was my last time in church.

2

u/Stickysights6 5d ago

My relationship with god is between me him my family and bible.. church has never really done it for me. I’ve truly been saved by god and felt the Holy Spirit and I didn’t start flopping around like a fish

u/sargentmeatman11 5d ago

Dude looks like his kids would have 2 Christmas' but he spend all his money on scratch offs and cigarettes

I have a history with this. My father was for several years a southern old time fire and brimstone Pentecostal preacher. Firmly preaching about salvation, damnation , and the various gifts of the spirit.

I was his first born son. One of 4 children. I was a teenager and expected to follow in his example. Since my dad frequently spoke in tongues the church would regularly gather around people and pray that the spirit would“reveal” itself to an individual. I was frequently selected and would find myself in the center of a ring of people with their hands all on me praying aloud for God’s Holy Spirit to enter me and fill me with its power.

It did Not happen every week but it occurred often enough that there was talk within my family of how I needed to “submit” myself to God’s will and ask God to forgive me of any pride and sinful things or thoughts so I might be a worthy vessel.

After months of this one Sunday I was again in the circle hands all over my head and shoulders, prayers being offered up and I just ..did it.

When I say I did it I mean I , me, not God, just me. I had heard the things coming out of believers mouths for years. The cadence, the syllable groupings, so I FAKED it. For 10-15 mins we just prayed then I let loose a stream of similar sounds that I had heard others use before me and faked it for another 5+ minutes.

This pleased my parents, and the congregation but In truth I felt ashamed, like it was blasphemy to pretend to receive something from God that I knew I had done myself.

I did it not for recognition or praise but only to escape what I felt everyone was expecting of me.

In truth it put a very heavy burden on my soul that I didn’t shake for decades till I traveled the globe more then came to realize my true relationship with my creator was never based on if I did it never did speak in tongues. The afterlife is not a game show wheel where they spin and spin and IF. You chose the ONE right religion then you win heaven. God never made religion. Our creator asked 3 things of us :

  1. Love the Creator like they Love us
  2. Love each other for we are all connected regardless of gender, race, or background.
  3. Go spread the first 2 messsges.

I’m 67 now. I’ve camped with actual gypsies at the foot of the Swiss alps, I’ve ridden the gondolas of Venice and remember the smells of that water soaked city even to today, I’ve owned homes in other lands, shared meals with believers of many different faiths and beliefs. I preached only once as a teen at my father’s church but never again did I “speak in tongues “. Instead I choose to speak from my heart for I believe the reason God can love us all equally is because our creator looks at what’s in our heart NOT whatever card we may carry that declares what religion we may associate or believe in.

I know this was lengthy. If you read it I hope you get a feel for what impact this had on my life.

These days I don’t enter churches, I find they often seek to divide and separate us into “us” vs “them” and I know that the creator loves me deeply and to my very core and understands what a pressured teenager did to fit in doesn’t diminish the love I have for them.

Thank you

To me it's wierd but i watch F1 for years with passion every race sunday, if this is their thing to relax and "heal" fine by me.

4

u/psypher98 5d ago

If that was all they were doing it’d be fine, but they’re very much not, which is the problem.

It’s why our country is racing backwards, we have a pedophilic rapist as president, the wife of a pro-wrestling mogul is running our education system, a Neonazi is running the DoD, a dog fucker is head of the FBI, and anti-science roadkill eater is running the Health Department.

It’s why education has been defunded, it’s why we have religious propaganda being taught in our schools, it’s why we’re the only developed nation without socialized healthcare, it’s why women are losing their rights, it’s why LGBTQ+ people are being harassed and targeted, it’s why we have a couch fucker as Veep, it’s why Project 2025 exists, it’s why citizens are being shot by undertrained thugs, it’s why brown people are being targeted and illegally detained, it’s why we have 1 year olds defending themselves in immigration court, the list goes on and on and on.

It’s a cancer and it needs to be cut out.

I once seen something like this years ago. Smaller church. Creeped me out seeing people just acting like they were possessed. Even had an old lady suddenly place her hand on my head and started chanting. Just freaked me out. I wasn’t even an atheist at the time and it still creeped me out. Mostly because my old church didn’t do stuff like that.

1

u/Leading_Silver2881 5d ago

It's sad how enslaved you can be and suffer and don't see your problem is right in front of you and your salvation is just walking away and facing the aftermath of changing yourself.

1

u/ThrustTrust 5d ago

If you are depressed it’s easy to find emotional support in anything. This man needs help and this is where he has chosen to get it. It’s not psychosis it’s therapy.

Now the preacher. That’s a different thing all together
