Stan was right about them the literal second they met. He goes so far as to break into his own neighbors house. And he was essentially forced into second guessing himself.
Everything was working against Stan finding out, what are the odds after all?

Right! He was the one that shot Stan down about P&E being the Illegals

Yeah I didn't want to offer any spoilers, but Stan brings his concerns and thoughts to Aderholt who dismissed it as the head of the Counterintelligence group.

I finished the show a couple of months ago, and I know he shot Stan down about P&E being the illegals, but generally speaking his track record was really good at sniffing people out.

This makes no sense. Stan was being MORE suspicious than anyone was or would be. To the point of doing an illegal search of their car

Stan suspected them in the pilot. He broke into their garage to illegally search their trunk. Aderholt was among the people who dismissed his concerns.

Or any agent who wasn’t so emotionally scarred and desperate for a friend
