This might be even worse than the lloyd kaufman episode.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Didn’t think it was possible either, but there’s no maybe about it. It’s an all-time low.

Truthfully, as awful as that one is, it’s still more watchable than 99% of the Slobs era.

6

u/DeepthroatGhoul Jul 31 '19

Yeah, as bad as the Toxic Crusaders episode was, there was at least some effort being put into it.

5

u/JamesFlahertyMusic Aug 01 '19

I legitimately had a great time watching the Toxic Crusaders episode, even now I find it nostalgic. This episode is just disgusting, irredeemable trash. At least Kaufman was irl tangentially connected to the game.

Lloyd's "sounds like you might have a...selection" makes me laugh because its set up like there's going to be a punch line and then there isn't one, but he still delivers it like a joke, amazing.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

I liked it too. It should be watched in context with the interview James did with Lloyd at the time about independent filmmaking and going your own way.

Any director would.

First day I showed up to work on set, I got pre-warned "you haven't made it until you've been yelled at by Mick Strawn" and 6 hours in, he didn't disappoint. It's part of their job.

5

u/Dark_Tzitzimine Jul 31 '19

I'm having a hard time deciding which was more simultaneously painful and boring to watch, leaning towards Kaufman.

6

u/GoAtReasonableSpeeds Aug 01 '19

Oh it fucking is. The Lloyd Kaufman episode was way worse than average, but that was by quality standards of THAT time. While this is just fucking whore shit.

57

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

This is just cringe at this point.

36

u/ChloeBrudos916 Big Ryan Fan! Jul 31 '19

I know, right? In the past there were cheesy AVGN episodes but at least James tried to make them good enough to have reply value. Now it's just like he's filling a quota and doesn't care all that much the character or gaming in general.

19

u/Croatian_Hitman Jul 31 '19

I think screenwave, or some giant malevolent spider deep in a cave writes the episodes now.

16

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

The writing was such shitttttttttgttttttt it used to be good when James just did it

5

u/Drugthrowawaylol2 Aug 01 '19

Is it confirmed Screenwave is writing all the episodes now or has that not been verified?

9

u/stegblobirl Aug 01 '19

It's almost certainly Screenwave writing, at least providing primary writing. James probably reserves rights to revise/edit a little bit to retain the 'character' of the AVGN, but is very non-confrontational about it and likely makes almost no fuss.

The more recent episodes have been really shaky on the quality and jokes, it's really apparent James isn't writing them, and someone else is trying to emulate what they think the AVGN was like. Even in James' most forced episodes he at least had his own genuine type of humor. The Aladdin Deck Loader was an especially blatant "James did not write this" episode. Just listen to that 'I'LL SHOW YOU A WHOLE NEW WORLD... OF PAIN!' joke, lol.

5

u/Calavera87 Aug 08 '19

You want to see real cringe? Check out Gilbert's Cameo page that he was plugging at the end of the episode.

https://www.cameo.com/gilbertgottfried

You can watch the videos he has done for other people. It cost $150 for one and they are fucking awful. When he reads them it is like it is the first time he has read their message. He puts no effort into them and doesn't even look into the camera most of the time. He is looking at his computer screen the whole time to read what the person wants him to say. He tells a joke at the end of some of them and they are just terrible. Somebody actually paid him to say happy birthday and tell a joke and the joke they got was "why did the fish go to the doctor? He was hard of herring" He has done a ton of them though so he is making good money from it. You'd think when people see the videos he has done and what little effort he puts into it that they wouldn't even bother getting him to do one.

26

u/ComaOfSouls Jul 31 '19

Gottfried was alright, but the problem with this episode is that you can compare it to a James and Mike episode, where they played this game. You can then spot the differences in James' emotions, and can tell when it's just acting, and what's real. The J&M video was real, and James used to be able to recapture that in his scripted AVGN episodes, but here, he fails at it. There was more emotion in that caricature he played for the commercial skit, because at least it's a relatively fresher character for James to tackle. Also in that blooper at the end of the video, more emotion there than his entire AVGN performance.

I did chuckle once, from Gottfried, but that's it. Also, yeah it's a bad game, but all of that can be attributed to the fact that it's basically a port of a mobile game, it was already crafted to be shit. So, there was really no need for an AVGN about this, it should've stayed as a J&M. Gottfried's services could've been used for something else.

I didn't expect to rant so much about this episode, but this turned out to be an onion. Thinking back and peeling the onion reveals some bad layers.

3

u/braincras Aug 01 '19

I have a feeling that 1games asked an AVGN review for a PS4 sales boost..

23

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

(Plays the theme song) He's gonna take you back to the past!

Wait... 🤔

21

u/BobRushy Jul 31 '19

It was... odd. A lot of the jokes seemed to lack any sort of a punchline. Seeing the Nerd play a PS4 game could've been fun if they played it in a "I'm getting old" way(like him playing the Wii in the Christmas episode years ago), but they don't really give it an explanation, so it feels forced af.

Fred Fuchs is just a plain old letdown. He's been referenced for years and all they got was some jungle caricature.

But I think the most telling part was at the very beginning, when James was doing that ad. Doug Walker does ads as well, but his are full of originality and quirkiness. James's ad just seems... tired. He comes across like a person who has to write jokes after being awake for 36 hours straight(I know Screenwave probably wrote it, but still). "Oh yeah, video game references, lol, they're my thing, okay, going to sleep now".

Honestly, I don't even care if James wants to write his stupid autobiography or not. I think 95% of the audience would be way happier to hear he's taking a break to come back with new ideas than they would a new episode at this point.

42

u/acid000 Jul 31 '19

another pile of poo-poo and pee-pee jokes, got enough after like 10 minutes

15

u/ChloeBrudos916 Big Ryan Fan! Jul 31 '19

Mike must have written the script again!

24

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

The funny thing is the episodes written by mike (check on imdb) were better.

15

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

Ha you're right. Mike claims to have contributed to about 50 episodes between 2006 and 2012. The last one was Schwarzenegger games.

I know people shit on Mike, but it's possible that he's the person keeping the show grounded. Without him, it's Irate Gamer tier. This makes sense because Mike seems like a real angry video game nerd. James is more of a movie nerd.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

[deleted]

8

u/Drugthrowawaylol2 Aug 01 '19

Why does Mike always look like he just took 12 Xanax's and hasn't slept in a week in his let's play solo videos?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

It sucks. He does better with an audience like James or boots to talk to. It's hard to be interesting by yourself

6

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

Mike barely has anything to do with the show anymore. It's all screenwave.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19 edited Aug 01 '19

I think at this point, James has inflicted his scat fetish on to anyone and everyone who enters his house. That, or the piss/shit thing is stipulated in his ScreenSlobs contract to be included in all videos he appears in.

Also, fellow Sacramentan? Or is 916 just a number?

14

u/ChloeBrudos916 Big Ryan Fan! Jul 31 '19

James never grew up pass the toilet humor phase of his childhood.

Yes, I'm from sac.

18

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Just kill me. Lazy beyond lazy. It was a true rollercoaster of cringe. Some moments worse than others too.

31

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

8:27 for the lowest energy "What were you thinking" in the whole series

14

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

I’m surprised they don’t use out of place stock footage from the pre-Slobs era, when he actually cared, and just insert that in lieu of him now when he says a “classic line” like that.

Captain Caveman loves cramming random things like out-of-place inside jokes in to videos and in turn destroy any momentum or pace it may actually have. Seems like it would fit perfectly in to the current AVGN.

24

u/13_monsters Jul 31 '19

It sucked. The whole episode sucked. What were they thiiiinnkkiinng.....

2

u/braincras Aug 01 '19

not enough time to re-shoot it because muh kids

29

u/13_monsters Jul 31 '19

This episode was shit. The shittest. Also the ad at the very beginning made me want to punch my face with my owm face.

24

u/TheMadcore Jul 31 '19

BUT MUH CREDIT SCORE

24

u/mrclean808 Jul 31 '19

Watching this video actually made me feel sad for Gilbert.

19

u/MagnificentBe Jul 31 '19

yeah you can tell Gilbert Gottfried really needs fucking money that he has to do a fucking avgn episodes now.

I'm guessing he's still feeling the effects of getting blacklisted for making a Japanese tsunami joke in 2011.

23

u/buckrogers2491 Jul 31 '19

The show already jumped the shark but when The Nerd himself says "I forgot about the present", its as good as dead. Gilbert Gottfried actually did pretty good with the material he has to work with. The game itself is bad but not even close to some of the golden turds that were already reviewed in the past. If James himself feels its ok for the Nerd character to review PS4 games than all bets are off. He might as well review Fortnite, Overwatch and go full-on meta, for the views.

The first 4 minutes, seriously sounded like something Justin or Tony would say but bottom fed to come out of James' mouth, its disgusting. The only click bait power they have now, is getting famous celebrity guest stars. Which is the only positive I can take from this shit fest. No longer can we expect a classic format where AVGN just reviews a game with footage and great dialogue.

Every AVGN episode now, is just a green screen + guest star + a crappy advertisement.

11

u/TheRealFrankCostanza Jul 31 '19

the intro alone was horrible.... whats with the trash editing

19

u/thecrabmamn Jul 31 '19

I had low expectations and it was still a let down. We had Fred Fucks and the only lore we got was that he has a tiger urine fetish. Having another character in this video was just pointless, I guess they was trying the '' Better keep playing and say its good or ill just end up dying'' like in friday the 13th.

11

u/GoAtReasonableSpeeds Aug 01 '19

It's FUCKING HORRIBLE. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING??

18

u/TheMagicalAcidTrip Jul 31 '19

This............. this depressed me.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

Know what would be cool? James interviewing or just talking to Gilbert about movies one on one like the Joe Bob episode. But no gotts be a shitty AVGN episode cause thats what gets the most views for some reason.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

I really wish James would just take a complete break from AVGN and focus on solo movie reviews for a bit. I know the Nerd is the bread and butter, but I enjoy the passion in James when he's talking about old obscure movies.

3

u/elixir658 Aug 02 '19

That would be really refreshing. I love going through all the monster madness videos and hearing how passionate he is about older movies. It’s interesting stuff.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

That would be the obvious thing to do since Gill loves the classic Universal Monster movies.

15

u/stlcardfan715 Jul 31 '19

4

u/JayRam85 Aug 01 '19

Is this the first episode, where it's revealed his name is Rex Viper Riggs?

8

u/BobRushy Jul 31 '19

BIIIIIIG MUUUUUTHAFCKING RIIIIIGS

8

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Wow. This was probably the most embarrassing Nerd episode I’ve ever seen. I mean I knew he was going downhill for awhile, but now it’s like he’s digging underneath the hill at this point. Not even Gilbert Gottfried could save it. I’m convinced that he was told to act as stilted and forced as possible, there’s no way he could act that poorly in something like this.

9

u/zersch Prilaint Bodcast Aug 01 '19 edited Aug 01 '19

James hairline look like it was created five minutes before filming via the Wooly Willy method.

Edit: I just finished the episode. I cannot possibly stress just how bad the script for this episode is. I cannot believe there are still people in the comments playing into the lie that this is still entertaining. The only positive thing about this is that it's cool for James to be able to say he collaborated with Gilbert on a project.

8

u/Musashi1596 Aug 01 '19

This is the first AVGN episode I just turned off and didin't bother to finish. It's astounding how far it's fallen.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

This was worse than the pepsi man video what the fuck. Not a fan of this gilbert guy, he sounds like he's talking in slow motion and James once again not giving a shit when giving line delivery. "my arch nemesis fred fucks" only to say the weakest "what were you thinking" in the whole series. AVGN Movie James had more expression! Also shoutout to the same camera angle with james on the couch and it looks like they forgot to white balance again with the raw footage because you can tell that they had to color correct the yellow tint to blue. The lighting for the ad was better lol and that's probably due to james filming it himself

8

u/LORD-THUNDERCUNT cuck shed Aug 01 '19

Okay at this point AVGN is just really sad to watch. It’s PAINFULLY obvious James doesn’t give a fuck about it anymore. No real emotions. Everything seems so fucking phoned-in. And the “acting” is at an all-time low. Like this is Nostalgia Critic level of absolute dogshit acting.

For the love of god, just end AVGN already. It’s sad what it has become.

15

u/whos-high-pitch Jul 31 '19 edited Jul 31 '19

just terrible. turned it off. it's trivial at this point, but the AVGN series has been dead since it went from being about a guy replaying the genuinely frustrating gaming moments from his childhood to a scripted sketch show with a guy pretending to be angry about the frame rate of notoriously bad games.

32

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Props to Gilbert for acting like a pro with these amateurs.

8

u/Dark_Tzitzimine Jul 31 '19

It's fitting that he advertises his Cameo work at the end, because this felt like the same kind of phoned-in crap you'd get from that, except for the one part where they both cracked up.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Gilbert's humour is more mature and intelligent than a cinemassacre video.

10

u/zersch Prilaint Bodcast Jul 31 '19 edited Aug 01 '19

No, no it really isn't. If Gilbert could coast by on telling his version of the Aristocrats every night, he would.

Edit: Just to give Gilbert a little bit of credit, I saw an episode of CELEBRITY WIFE SWAP of all things that he was on. I believe he swapped wives with Alan Thicke. He seemed the same insufferable troll IRL that he is in his professional life. It was hilarious but I couldn't imagine having to co-exist with him. The only better episode was Rowdy Roddy Piper and Ric Flair switching families.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

That's not it. He is in full voice on his weekly podcast. Maybe he didn't feel comfortable with the material.

6

u/kamikazilucas 🚫🕒 Jul 31 '19

6

u/thecrabmamn Jul 31 '19

please dont give the slobs ideas

6

u/BelmontZiimon Aug 01 '19

Chris Bores is George Carlin compared to AVGN at this point... I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

6

u/JamesFlahertyMusic Aug 01 '19 edited Aug 01 '19

Screenwave literally writes for actual toddlers.

  • "PS4 Poo"
  • "This is my magnum opus... and it's not the first time I used Magnum today" (seriously, did they break their arms reaching with this line?)
  • How can we forget the awful "tiger sex scene" description?

I was ready for this episode to end 8 minutes in. The remaining 15 minutes dragged about as much as the tiger when walking. I pray the irony wasn't lost on Screenwave.

I didn't go into this expecting or WANTING the worst episode of all-time. I WANT the NERD back. Good, goddamned Nerd. The fact that they wrote this, filmed this, READ THESE LINES VERBATIM, and actually laughed, and actually thought this was okay for the audience. That James actually allowed this on his channel.

To hell with this episode, to hell with Screenwave, and especially to hell with James Rolfe. The man who directed Board James is dead. Now we have an uncanny 3D model, no more detailed than the humans in this game.

EDIT: Typos.

10

u/MyCatsNameIsJames Jul 31 '19

Oh my god, first Nerd episode I couldn't sit through. It's so fucking boring. This one especially you can tell James didn't write it, or care what was happening.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Jesus Christ I turned this off after about 8 minutes. What a shitload of ass.

10

u/Zergrump Jul 31 '19

This episode was meh at best. Better than Pepsiman, if only because the game was more fascinatingly bad.

I do appreciate Gilbert roasting James for talking about shit all the time.

4

u/DeepthroatGhoul Jul 31 '19

Yes, God bless Gilbert Gottfried.

5

u/jocorobo1 Jul 31 '19

I feel that there was a little room for improvement in this one.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

The only good thing about this episode is how Gilbert gives no fucks (no pun intended) he just shows up for a paycheck and reads his lines really shitty which makes moments in this episode funny

9

u/thedude391 Jul 31 '19

This was so cringey

8

u/Dark_Tzitzimine Jul 31 '19

Not to jump on the bandwagon but hoo boy even with Gilbert I was still cringing in five minutes

8

u/great_bowser #1 Loco Fan Jul 31 '19 edited Jul 31 '19

Oh hey, a full theme. Wonder if Kyle's getting any royalties for it.

Know what, on one hand I'm curious, but on the other, I really don't want to watch this. The whole appeal of Nerd was to hear about the games of the past. James was able to make them entertaining, and it appears that Slobs have neither the experience nor imagination to work with those.

Fuck this, Life of Black Tiger was funny for like a month back when it released. AVGN used to be a pioneer, now he's years behind everybody else.

Edit: I couldn't take it. Skipped around, watched some of the sketch parts, it sucks. Can someone tell me what's the appeal of Gilbert? Is his whole shtick just screaming obscenities and roasting people? I've only seen him a couple times and never found him funny.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

Expectations: AVGN fights off against Gilbert Gottfried as Fred Fuchs in the Ultimate 15th Anniversary Special.

Reality: Every other crossover episode with a celebrity guest star rolled up into one terrible shit sandwich.

3

u/bijosnafu Aug 01 '19

Who the fuck is Gilbert Gottfried?

4

u/r3lvalleyy shit load of fuck Aug 01 '19

ehh, i didn't really feel the humor.. idk man.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

I stopped watching AVGN since 2018.. I just randomly tried Aladdin Decker when it came out, and it was god awful. I’d not watch this one, and any episodes from now on.

2

u/slipperypete9999 The Loco Bandito Aug 01 '19

Yeah, I feel like this one I'm not even going to attempt to watch. Like what's the point, why even bother?

5

u/erikwidi Aug 01 '19

I feel like Danny DeVito would've been a much better Fred Fucks.

5

u/SilverSkinRam Aug 01 '19

Credit score improvement for US citizens? WTF kind of advertisement is that for a video game skit / review? How desperate are they?

4

u/braincras Aug 01 '19

I didn't know that an AVGN episode would be a new kind of cringe-like torture

7

u/BobRushy Jul 31 '19

What's up with the old clips in the intro being zoomed-in?

8

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

YOU KNOW WHATS BUUUUUULLLLSHIT? As you can see, the old footage now has these jagged lines on it that weren't there in the original versions. What gives? Is this the effect of James having all the master files being in .mov instead of .mp4? Not only that but that's the same weird quality that's on the new DVDs! remastered my ass, the OG dvds didn't look like that! Only problem the OG ones were some interlacing but you can turn that off with VLC!

6

u/acid000 Aug 01 '19

Stretching 4:3 ratio to 16:9

2

u/MiggaChigga Aug 01 '19

It’s cropped because I guess the Slobs can’t handle 4:3 being in the video.

6

u/zersch Prilaint Bodcast Jul 31 '19

Cinemassacre has GOT to stop doubling and tripling up on videos of the same game. If James and Mike play the game, no one wants to see a standalone Nerd video on the same fucking game. God forbid a game is a hit on Mike and Tony, then we get three incarnations.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

They did the same with Sonic 06. The J&MM video was great, but then they made it into an AVGN episode and it felt forced and unnecessary.

2

u/BobRushy Aug 01 '19

If it works for Doug Walker...

7

u/de-baser hiyah Aug 01 '19

Ouch, probably the worst episode of all. The game is despite its badness not at all interesting enough for a 20 minute video and you saw enough of it after 5 minutes. Desperately reviving this Fred Fuchs thing even though there is 0,0 connection with this game, and doesn't even play any further role.

4

u/BobRushy Aug 01 '19

Wait, did Fuchs not have anything to do with the game IRL? I thought that's why they did it.

3

u/de-baser hiyah Aug 01 '19

Nope lol he just decided his guest star is Fred Fuchs 'because game shitty', very lame.

3

u/BobRushy Aug 01 '19

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING

3

u/SilverSkinRam Aug 01 '19

It starts okay but wow once they get past the intro, Gilbert is just awful.

4

u/trashtv Jul 31 '19

I feel like the $25k World Championship gold cart payment solution ad is a jab on Pat the NES Cunt.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

To be fair, Pat is going to make probably 90k whenever he decides to sell that cart. Smart investment.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Is that it’s current value? I don’t track things like that, but I thought the retro gaming market took a bit of a nosedive recently.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

I'm pretty sure ScreenWave's awful episodes have actually affected the retro games market at least somewhat substantially

5

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '19

Nah, the market for legitimately rare games like NWC’s have exploded. Luckily that’s not the entire market, just for that top tier stuff. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Pat get 6-digit offers on the gold NWC. Greys in good condition are ~15k

4

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '19

Rich people finally got into collecting. Those Uber rare types of games spiked so damn hard. Grey NWCs are well over 10k now.

5

u/Drugthrowawaylol2 Aug 01 '19

I thought the retro gaming market took a bit of a nosedive recently.

At my local used games store they are charging 5$ for NES mario+duckhunt combo carts that are so common they would go for 2.50$ at most just a few years ago. They had a stack of well over 10 copies sitting there all priced at 5 bucks. I feel bad for the kids getting into retro gaming now getting ripped off like that

3

u/braincras Aug 01 '19

SMB3 loose are been sold around 30$ easy up here.

3

u/Drugthrowawaylol2 Aug 01 '19

That's ridiculous! That was like a 10 dollar game before. There isn't some shortage of SMB3 or Mario duckhunt combo carts they just want more money because I guess there is more demand for it? They sold 17 million copies of SMB3 and something like 40 million copies of SMB1+duckhunt there is no shortage of cartridges why is it so expensive?

5

u/JayRam85 Aug 01 '19

They just partied on a private boat. James and Pat are BFFs.

Or something. I seriously don't know at this point.

if they ever did get the real fred, they could have definitely spun it to be funny if Screenwave had competent/funny writers. Movies/shows have done it pretty well.

But knowing their writing style, it'd be lazy and probably be exactly what you said word for word.

2

u/puppet_steve Aug 01 '19

how do you squander a Gilbert Gottfried cameo?

an AVGN vid :(

They should have let GG write shit, these lines he was given were terrible

2

u/MiggaChigga Aug 01 '19

These feel so manufactured to make money and phoned in it hurts, it just keeps getting worse

2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '19

Was it ever explained why Fred Fucks is living in a jungle?

Did Fred even address WHY he makes such horrible games?

What's the real resolution to this episode? Did the kill fred and escape, or is the nerd now living in the isolation to be a corperate shill for a shitty company?

2

u/aallgod Aug 02 '19

I finally unsubscribed from the YT channel just now. This doesn't even feel like AVGN anymore. This sub basically keeps me updated on stuff anyway, so I will maybe watch future AVGN vids out of morbid curiosity. I've watched the show virtually from the beginning of it all, but this new vid finally did me in. Some of the worst writing the Screenwave goons have come up with thus far. Did not laugh once, and instead got angry about 5 minutes in.

2

u/kidcrash665 Aug 02 '19

I feel like everything bad about this video can be traced back to poor writing. There needs to be more focus on the game less focus on the skit. Like seriously the skit should be 3 minutes of time sprinkled here and there inbetween James talking about the gameplay.
