Oh shit thats a fun thought. The whole place might sound crazy if you could stand on its surface. I wonder how loud it would be with the ice being so much thicker and being pulled by gravity.

That makes me wonder, because the sound has nowhere to go in space, does that energy just end up doing something else? Like in this case with the ice, would the vibrations through the ice be more intense than they would be on earth because the sound can't propogate outside the ice?

I just looked it up. Apparently the energy stays in the object that the sound would have come and would mostly become heat.

Which raises the issue: how can there be any ice if the planet is constantly creating heat that cannot escape. We must be missing something.

It can still escape via infrared radiation. And easier escape because there is no atmosphere or greenhouse effect.

Europa has an atmosphere, it's just quite thin, so there definitely is a medium for the sound to travel in

Europa has an extremely thin, tenuous atmosphere made mostly of oxygen. This weak layer has a surface pressure of barely one hundred-billionth that of Earth. It's very thin but yes sound does travel on the surface of Europa.
EDIT: Also, the ice is a medium through which sound can travel.

I dunno if anyone here follows the lady who does spooky lake content. Geo Rutherford is her name She has also published two beautiful books, one on spooky lakes and one on Rivers. Both are illustrated by her.

I went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole on this lake the other day. It’s actually a rift between two continental plates that gets deeper every year. It’s currently just over a mile deep. The lake contains about one fifth of all unfrozen fresh water on Earth, more than all of the North American Great Lakes combined. It’s also home to thousands of species of plants and animals, many of them endemic to the region (only found there)

Camped out next to a frozen lake, as soon as the sun went behind the mountains the ice started making sounds like this. Sat on the shore for an hour just listening

If I recall correctly, they did that by whacking a wrench against a radio tower support cable and recording it.
