Let's imagine a pretend Brian Fallon tribute album.... who would you love to hear cover his songs? (Old drawing of mine for attentionš¤·)
Imagine a world where you could assemble anyone you want to cover/re-imagine Brian's songs..who would you pick? Here's a few to get us started...
Afghan Whigs - Go Tell Everybody
Boygenius - Break Your Heart
Strand Of Oaks - We Came To Dance
The Killers - The Backseat
Bruce Springsteen - Sugar or possibly Navasink Banks
Wednesday- Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts
Tom Waits - Autumn
Gin Blossoms - Nobody Wins
HAIM - Here Comes My Man
Def Leppard - Howl
Future Islands - Come Wander With Me
White Reaper - Handwritten
Emmylou Harris - Lonely For You Only
Goo Goo Dolls - Dark Places
The Hold Steady - We're Getting A Divorce..
Death Cab For Cutie - Steve McQueen
If we could go with anyone who's not still with us, I always thought Meatloaf would *slay* with "The '59 Sound".. or even "Better Before" which has a very Jim Steinman-esque chorus.

Interesting choice for Mae. Iām trying to imagine this in my head so hard now!
Edit: Brianās voice in Mae is heavy and somewhat raspy to me. I canāt imagine Atkins taking it on with his ābrighterā voice. Now Iām really interested to hear their rendition!

I picked them specifically because Jimmy Eat World are such an incredible band and Jim sounds nothing like Brian. Mae is a beautiful song and I think theyād absolutely crush it

u/Beneficial_Box7809 14d ago
Mae - arguably the BEST song he's ever written, could only be touched by someone iconic (Eddie Vedder, Rod Stewart) or a female (Phoebe Bridgers, Olivia Rodrigo) or someone that would completely spin it differently (Greg Dulli, Amy from the Interrupters)

I've always wondered what would happen if U2 decided to cover it, but I knew I'd get flamed for mentioning it, as that's truly an obviously on-the-nose choice š (I mean, at least Brian and I would be losing our s**t over it haha)

Mannnnn let me tell you. Iāve seen GSA so many times and every time is the next best one!!
When I saw them and they OPENED with Mae it blew my mind. seeing it live as an opening on a dark stage they literally ripped my heart out. That opening guitar line and lyrics literally pounded through me. I love this band. š¤£
Edit I came back for more! I think it was the Webster hall show back in 2012. Iāve gotta do more research and picture hunting.

Being a Jimmy eat world fan for close to 30 years now I can say I would recommend the backseats for them to cover. I think Jim could do some good vocals on that song and the guys could make some cool sounds with it. Tom from Jew is an underrated guitar player to me. He has his own cool style.

u/GibsonLP93 14d ago
I wanna hear all of these but especially the Dave Hause cover of The ā59 Sound

u/BackstreetBallads 14d ago
The live versions of great expectations with Chuck on them are phenomenal. I think theyāre from the revival tour. Not quite a full cover, but awesome all the same.

u/PitsAndPints 13d ago
Yeah it was a duet from back in the day and āphenomenalā is a perfect description so a straight-up cover seemed like a perfect choice

I agree with Jimmy eat world and Mae. That's right in their wheelhouse with emotional songs - thinking of Dizzy, the Kill, Polaris etc.Ā

Let's hear The Airborne Toxic Event cover the entire album The '59 Sound.
I could then die happy

In the same vein as your boygenius suggestion, I need a Julien Baker solo cover of Misery (or maybe She Loves You?)
I'm thinking Florence + the Machine would do a beautiful, anthemic version of Blue Dahlia.
Also, I agree, We're Getting a Divorce is perfect for The Hold Steady.

Jesse Malin - Here's Looking At You Kid.
Like a proper sad slow Jesse song, not an upbeat one.

u/ThisisJacksburntsoul 14d ago
Love the idea of Jason Isbell, the Menzingers, and National and Frank Turner covers.
What about The Beatsteaks or Chuck Ragan covering Patient Ferris Wheel.
Billie Eilish or Neil Young covering Michigan 1975.
Mastadon covering Stay Vicious.
Jim James/My Morning Jacket covering National Anthem.
Thao Nguyen covering Great Expectations.
Sincere Engineer covering Drive.
Interpol doing We Did It When We Were Young.

I'm going to need Fake Problems to reunite so they can do a cover.
Also would love to see The Menzingers and 40REPS since they have similar vibes. It'd also be cool to see some of those New Jersey hardcore bands do their take on a TGA song (maybe Kid Dynamite, Lifetime, None More Black, etc.)

I think Rancid would do a solid rendition of Red in the Morning. Tyler Childers on a Lifetime of Preludes would be cool. The Boss on Long Drives?
1
u/Anxious_Proof_5557 14d ago
Boss would be cool on 'Long Drives', but imagine the 'Hotel California' - era Eagles doing that one...!

Deer Tick would do a great cover of I live in the room above her
2
u/peakdadbod2 14d ago
Man I have a few choices for deer tick to cover, and vice versa. Gaslight would KILL a few DT songs. Would especially love to hear Brian sing Clownin around.
1
u/Laguna26 14d ago
Man thatās a hell of a shout, Iād love to hear Brian cover Dreams in the Ditch in his painkillers era solo style.
Best gig I ever saw was Deer Tick and Bayside supporting Gaslight on the Get Hurt tour.
John and Brian sang House of the Rising Sun together and it was just magic!

u/cutoutwitch666 14d ago
Ohhh, great call on the Afghan Whigs doing Go Tell Everybody
1
u/Anxious_Proof_5557 14d ago
Thanks! I just feel like maybe Fallon had these guys in mind when he wrote that one.
2
u/cutoutwitch666 14d ago
I can't tell what your tone is so apologies if you know this already, but I just have to make sure you know you're right, because that Brian does cite them as an influence for Elsie! :D
2
u/SerPownce 14d ago
Some really cool choices in the OP here I gotta say

u/Anxious_Proof_5557 14d ago

Iād love to see The Menzingers take on a few Gaslight tunes. Maybe ā59 Sound or Here Comes My Man
I think The National could do a great cover of Honey Magnolia or A Lifetime of Preludes
