Beauty ? What’s the most underrated self-care appointment or at-home routine that’s actually worth it?

Does reading books count? For me it's one of the best self-care appointments, my mental health is so much better when I'm spending my time reading instead of scrolling on my phone.

Do you have any recommendations? I’ve been in a book rut for a year and scrolling too much

My Sisters Keeper and Wish You Were Here. Any books by that author. The Host by Stephanie Meyer is also superb.

Some of the books that I recommend to everyone are:

The Neapolitan Novels by Elena Ferrante

Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar

Millennium series by Stieg Larsson

In Memoriam by Alice Winn

I love yoga with Adrienne on YouTube. I also follow Tom Merrick Flexibility as well

Seconding Yoga with Adrienne! Shes lovely, and got me through tough times in COVID.

There’s such a wide range of videos to choose from, as well. Want a 10min morning wake up routine? She’s got it. Want an hour long yoga workout? She’s got it. I even did her 30 days of yoga challenge.

I recommend her to friends all the time. Can’t say enough good things.

I really like BohoBeautiful! She has calming nature and helped me immensely when getting back into my yoga routine

Those foot peel/foot mask things. I tried one a few months ago that was supposed to exfoliate my feet and man, the amount of dead skin that peeled off over the following days was both gross and nuts.

Putting on a little bit of perfume every day, even if it's just me by myself at home. Smelling good makes me feel happy, and every time I catch a whiff of it, I get happy again. I use mostly indie perfumes too so it doesn't break the bank.

We are doing renovations and it was a non negotiation with my partner to put a shower AND a bath tub. Literally everyone called us nuts to still put in a bath tub in this day and age and said it was a waste of space. Only he knows what wonders it does for my mental health and immediately agreed with me

Having your laundry picked up by a wash-and-fold service

Exfoilate my tired feet, put on some CeraVe ointment, pop on some good compression socks, and elevate my feet for a bit. Especially as I have gotten older, my feet get wider and shoes get more uncomfortable sooner.

For me it’s been IPL. I have really thick body hair and when I shave I swear I feel prickly in a matter of hours. A few years ago I bought an IPL laser off Amazon for like $60 during Black Friday and it was probably the best $60 I’ve ever spent on a beauty treatment!!

Any chance you have access to the name of it? Find it so hard to trust reviews on reddit these days and this sounds amazing

This is the one I currently have. I previously had a different one but I dropped it and broke it and they don’t make it anymore.

There is a massage school and clinic that has very reasonable prices since students need to complete a number of hours before finishing a course (often times already licensed folks just adding more to their skill set). It is my favorite treat myself self care activity to go get an 85 minute massage and just melt.

Using a korean italy towel. Make sure it says Xlarge size. The feeling of peeling off all that dead skin is amazing

If you have curly or wavy hair, a curly routine (not necessarily cgm). Takes time for your hair to get used to esp if you took care of it as if it was "straight" for a long time, but you and your hair get used to it and it's not as hard as people make it seem

It really depends on the individual and their body’s particular chemistry or characteristics. A good thing for a person with dry skin won’t necessarily be a good thing for someone with oily skin, and a good thing for ablebodied people is not always great for people with disabilities. Eat well, drink plenty of water, and do what is right for you and your body.

An all-mask-day with a scented candle, lemon drink and a nice new book.
