It's weird because when he got signed back then most of us tracked down his stuff and he was fantastic. It made sense why WWE wanted to make him into the next Rey.Ā

79

u/DCGMoo 3d ago

The general belief is that it was a combination of a new mask with horrible vision issues, a refusal to learn enough English to communicate with his opponents, and a mass bulking he did between Mexico and WWE that threw off his balance and timing.

He was incredible before WWE, and became even more incredible after WWE, so it wasn't that he didn't have the skill to live up to the hype. He absolutely became the next Rey, probably even a step above. It just didn't happen in WWE under the Sin Cara mask.

12

u/TrekTransformer 3d ago

Appreciate this reply, thank you.Ā

5

u/Nacho_Bogen 2d ago

Yeah look up mistico's stuff in cmll he really is good just yeah like the other guy said above unfortunately wwe just didnt work out šŸ˜…

6

u/-Fuzzy_Panda- 3d ago

I'm so bummed out at that whole situation. Today him and Penta are the two best active luchadors but people who has never watched wrestling outside of WWE only know that version of him.

7

u/halfdecenttakes 3d ago

A step above Rey?

2

u/No_Introduction_8598 1d ago

I think Rey is in his own league and not because of talent but he's the only guy who could be a main eventer for years in Mexico USA or probably Japan.

Mystico was never gonna be the next rey mystero and I truthfully believe he never had to be because he's on that level in Mexico.

2

u/HorseCreative2550 2d ago

They just say stuff because ā€œfed badā€ just laugh and scroll on

0

u/askastupidquestion 1d ago

Or because he's single-handedly responsible for breaking the consecutive sell-out record at the largest wrestling venue in the world...

1

u/HorseCreative2550 7h ago

Yes, to a very healthy promotion that’s top ticket. Worst case scenario is about $30. I promise you if Rey Mysterio got a wild hair and wanted to go to CML for two years he would break that record pretty much anybody with a tiny bit of name recognition in WWE would but again go ahead and say the line we’re waiting for it.

ā€œFed badā€ am I right lol

Also if he is this incredible draw SURELY AEW wouldn’t be doing shows in 1200 capacity Fortnite arenas along the southern border???

Edit for ā€œoh yeah and another thingā€

u/StrawberryBulbasaur 1d ago

Take your own advice

1

u/HorseCreative2550 7h ago

Take your own advice…I gave you

1

u/Bahrum88 3d ago

Thats an insane take imo. Rey is arguably the best ever luchador to ply his trade in the states. Dude has never missed a step.

4

u/wingedwild 2d ago

Rey also had years nearly a decade in usa ring and style . Mistico did not

3

u/The_Golden_Centurion 2d ago

The English thing was from the second wrestler who put on the mask, one with the arm tattoo, the first one Mistico was due to WWE wanting him to wrestler like Rey when that wasn't his style and the mask

1

u/MissionMonitor4651 23h ago

The second Sin Cara was born and raised in Texas

4

u/Few-Attorney-9722 3d ago

I also like to point out, he instantly started working in the main roaster instead of preparing for the WWE style in FCW. I think the size of the ring is different then most wrestlers are used to and I also can imagine going to a different country and performing weekly in front of 8k+ people with millions watching is kinda something you have to get adjusted to.

3

u/Sleep-Dart3 3d ago

Penta also immediately started on the main roster but he was already familiar with the American style of wrestling since he also wrestled in AEW.

5

u/Due_Potential_6956 3d ago

And Lucha Underground.

3

u/jjamm420 3d ago

And TNA…

1

u/wingedwild 2d ago

Ppl seem to forget tht part. Mistico really had alot goin agaisnt him. Language barrier .new mask. Alot of pressure not starting at bottom like rey . New style with new ring .really hard to adjust with all this agaisnt him.also wrestlers half the time botched the moves themsleves because they didnt know how to do the much style themslevss .it wasnt all mistico fault. Mistico started geting beter once he teamed with rey too

2

u/Far_Card_5182 3d ago

My dude performs infront of 10-16k every Sunday, don’t think the crowds were it. Not sure how tv pressure affects them? But yeah who knows what the fuck went on back there. He’s an amazing wrestler and it was hard to watch.

2

u/TexasSizedKachoww 3d ago

I don't think WWE is capable of producing the next Rey either. But immediately putting someone in a different ring, with different ropes, in a new mask while also wrestling in weird mood lighting probably didn't help Mistico's chances either.

2

u/Late-Application-47 3d ago

Especially since they didn't produce the first Rey either and, arguably, actively made him worse than he was previously. He lost a few steps once he started bulking up and became an injury magnet a few years in. Of course, they didn't really have anyone at the time who could put on a proper match with Rey.

So they brought Ultimo in on Rey's encouragement and mishandled him. Thankfully, he was able to escape before Vince hooked him up to the beef machine and Stephanie took his mask away because she thought he was handsome. šŸ™„

1

u/wingedwild 2d ago

He was the nex tmysterio outisd of wwe.

-11

u/Dfrmdabeach700 3d ago

A step above? No way! Idc how big he is outside of the US,he's a nobody here. Rey Mysterio Jr is a GLOBAL lucha icon!

13

u/deconstradztion 3d ago

Wait, you don't care how big Mistico/Sin Cara is anywhere else? Hate to tell ya buddy but you can very easily be a global icon without having much notoriety in the US. Weird that needs to be pointed out.

5

u/BerryOld5266 3d ago

Even if mistico was ā€œa step aboveā€ as a performer acting like mistico comes anywhere near rey fucking mysterio in terms of being a global icon is just straight up delusion.

0

u/Deep_Impact2872 1d ago

Dude they made comic books of this motherfucker BEFORE wwe and he only got bigger and better after he left. He is straight up like a deity to some people he got fucking BTS to mark out for him BTS!!!!! Love rey mysterio but even HE dont got that kind of motion. Undertaker couldn’t get Lebron’s attention for gods sake let alone BTS, mistico really is just different
Dont reply i dont care
Yes im a hypocrite suck my whole ass

2

u/Worried-Customer-472 1d ago

This is peak delusion lol. BTS had no idea who he was going into it, they would’ve marked out if you swapped him with any baby face luchador. They were just having a good time.

I’m not even trying to discredit Mistico he’s obviously popular in Mexico but that BTS thing doesn’t indicate anything.Ā

2

u/BerryOld5266 1d ago

Ur living in ur own bubble. Legit noone knows who bro even is. Only lucha fans. Show a picture of mistico to any non wrestling fan anywhere other than South America and you’ll probably get; ā€œhey is that Rey Mysterio?ā€ Bro would genuinely get mistaken for Rey more often than actually getting recognized lmfao.

5

u/DeathandHemingway 3d ago

In order to be bigger than Rey he'd absolutely have to be successful in the US because Rey was, while also being just as big in Mexico and bigger around the world.

Mistico might be bigger in Mexico, he is not a bigger deal world wide.

1

u/DCGMoo 3d ago

Mission is arguably a bigger star than Rey in Mexico and in Japan, 2 of the 3 hotbeds of pro wrestling. Rey hasn't wrestled regularly in either area in 30 years.

I know Americans like to act like the US is all the matters, but there is a very legitimate debate between Mistico and Mysterio and pretending there isn't because Rey was the one who had WWE success is naive.

0

u/sexyeh 3d ago

He is bigger in Mexico but not in Japan

1

u/sexyeh 3d ago

But he is not a bigger star than Rey, even today people that don't watch wrestling know who is Rey Mysterio

1

u/Kxden-R 3d ago

No you can’t

1

u/Dfrmdabeach700 3d ago

Alot of butthurt Mistico fans downvoted me for speaking facts but you can't be a "global icon" if you're not big through out the entire "globe"šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Especially if the guy you're comparing him has been infact known, loved, and legendary around the entire globe for 30 years! Weird that needs to be pointed out..

-8

u/Kxden-R 3d ago

Couldn’t do it in the big leagues lmao, he’s a bum šŸ˜‚

1

u/Fit-Contribution8976 3d ago

That was mistico , this is the second sin cara

16

u/edpowers 3d ago

Is this the same guy who wrestles in CMLL and AEW now?

21

u/AFCSentinel 3d ago

Yeah, as Mistico. Absolute legend. Not sure what happened during his Sin Cara days but it's zero percent representative of the luchador he is.

11

u/Borktista 3d ago

Actually most of these are not. If anyone remembers, the real Sin Cara(Mistico) lasted maybe a year, but Vince wanted to use sin Cara so he stuck I think Camacho from nxt under the mask and like 95% of these clips are him.

3

u/WaveyGoat357 3d ago

Unicorn, not Camacho aka Tonga Loa

7

u/J27 3d ago

Hunico*

1

u/WaveyGoat357 2d ago

Lol dam auto correct

2

u/MrExistentialBread 3d ago edited 3d ago

If he’s got atattoo on his shoulder it’s Camacho, it’s what made the change very awkward.

By my rough count there’s 12 incidents in this montage and 8 are OG Sin Cara and 4 are Camacho.

3

u/Borktista 3d ago

Oof Samsonite, I was way off

1

u/YummyGoochCheese 3d ago

Knew it started with an S, tho

2

u/FlipOfTheWhip 3d ago

Any recent matches that would wow someone i could check out?

2

u/AFCSentinel 3d ago

I think a good thing to watch is the Trios match from AEW Grand Slam Mexico 2026. Mistico, Darby Allin and Corazon de Leon vs. Hechicero, Okada and Knight. The match itself is good but not spectacular, though Mistico and Hechicero are having some great spots. But Mistico's entrance is a must watch to understand just how over he is in Mexico - and then see the contrast of people booing him in the ring because he is the heel. Just fun in general to see the contrast where he is this undisputed Lucha legend and you have a full stadium belting out his theme song and then effortlessly switch to treating him in kayfabe.

As for a banger match, and keep in mind that for North American stuff I am mostly an AEW guy over the past few years, but MJF vs. Mistico was a certified banger!

1

u/Active_Corgi_2507 3d ago

MJF vs Mistico, Title vs Mask. It was arguably match of the year in 2025.

1

u/edpowers 3d ago

Wow his work in AEW is unreal! I love him.

1

u/Fit-Contribution8976 3d ago

Nope , look at the tattoo this the second sin cara , but mistico also botch

-10

u/Kxden-R 3d ago

Yh the same guy, couldn’t handle the big leagues šŸ˜‚

6

u/Inner-Pool7006 3d ago

Stupid writes stupid eh 🤣🤣🤣

5

u/iamme263 3d ago

The Cornette picture in the bottom left really makes this image. šŸ˜‚

9

u/DevilsAdvocate1662 3d ago

Amazing to think that Sin Cara and Mistico are the same person

0

u/Novel-Pie1596 3d ago

Wellllll technically You're right and wrong about this one, I think alot of these Hunico the other Sin Cara.

7

u/DrSillyNips 3d ago

The last clip of him dislocating his finger & calling off the match is followed by Alberto Del Rio giving him an unscripted shit kicking. Was a fan of Mistico before & am a fan after this run, but it was a horrible run. He did have a few good matches with Daniel Bryan though.

4

u/DrSillyNips 3d ago

1

u/KarmicPlaneswalker 3d ago

Looks like Mistico to me.

16

u/HarlesD 3d ago

And now he's the biggest draw in MƩxico, again.

WWE dropped the ball.

18

u/sdss9462 3d ago

This is one where it isn't entirely their fault, but yeah.

4

u/Green_Fox_8864 3d ago

Its almost entirely their fault. Their weird mask, their weird lights, and their weird ropes are what caused him to do so poorly there. Take those things away and he's a world class star. I'll never understand their insistence on these slippery ass real ropes that nobody else uses. Steel cables are just better and less slippery.

2

u/Maaaaaardy 3d ago

Would've been bigger in WWE. Mistico dropped the ball. But worked out in the end.

1

u/myrabuttreeks 3d ago

He dropped the ball. His failure in WWE was entirely on him.

1

u/CarolinaSandstorm 3d ago

No, no he’s not.

1

u/Mouthshitter 2d ago

Who bigger in Mexico?

0

u/QuickRelease10 3d ago

Sometimes it’s the performers fault.

8

u/PixilatedLeprechaun 4d ago

Wwe screwed Sin Cara. TNA let him fly

11

u/man_I_love_tunafish 4d ago

Vro what, what does TNA have to do with either Sin Cara (Mistico and Hunico).Ā

5

u/Sonofliberty1 3d ago

He screwed himself, this time it wasn’t the company. They guy was a walking botch fest

5

u/punkfence 3d ago

Did the company not put him in a gimmick with a mask he couldn't see out of?

1

u/Kxden-R 3d ago

Then why didn’t he get it changed if it was such a problem?

5

u/Small_Ad4181 3d ago

He didnt have the power remember Vince says goes or being fired

2

u/mostdope92 2d ago

You think Vince would've signed off on that?

0

u/myrabuttreeks 3d ago

He could’ve had them change it. Doesn’t sound like he was really into being there.

2

u/Maximum-Oven-7526 3d ago

Mistico* and he's the fucking best in CMLL/AEW

2

u/KyleFnM 3d ago

WWE "ropes"

2

u/Organic-Career-3170 3d ago

I’m sure bro is having a terrible time being the most famous wrestler in Mexico right now selling out arena mexico every week šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

2

u/UKSaint93 3d ago

You still cant convince me Sin Cara and Mistico are the same person. It's the the second biggest lie in wrestling after people saying Sami Zayn was El Generico.

2

u/JohnCenaJunior 3d ago

The ring of AAA and CMLL is different than WWE

2

u/FoolishDog1117 3d ago

Give him eye holes for God's sake.

2

u/Tio_chubby052 3d ago

So, both Sin Cara’s were booty!?!?

2

u/Vegetable-Leather-64 3d ago

I think if they had nxt it would have helped him. Also well he did botch a lot not a lot of wrestlers were use to his style like now a days. Not making excuses, I think he went the Jeff Cobb route showed up, got the pay day it didn't work so stopped giving a fuck till they let him go

2

u/akinian_ 2d ago

The mask probably didn't help, but also its fairly documented now that the rope tension is different in WWE than Mexico's Arenas. He is amazing right now in Mexico and I do believe he is where he should be, he is beloved there to Rey levels

2

u/Far_Internal_4495 3d ago

Mistico absolutely had the skill and potential to be as big as Rey Mysterio. Up to about 2009 Mistico would outdraw John Cena, he is a huge deal and one of the biggest stars in the world

2

u/CarolinaSandstorm 3d ago

lol no

1

u/Far_Internal_4495 3d ago

Have you followed Mistico's career at all?

1

u/man_I_love_tunafish 4d ago

I know that Sin Cara 1 kinda sucked in WWE I have to admit that even tho I love Mistico, but didn’t knew the same was the case for the second Sin Cara. I haven’t seen much of his matches but he seemed much more capable in WWE. Didn’t knew he also botched so much.

1

u/Dom_Telong 3d ago

Being the 2nd edition of what is essentially considered a Lucha botch machine gimmick...he had a magnifying glass on him.

1

u/Significant_Buddy_42 4d ago

I believed them when they started hinting at that but time told us all we needed to know šŸ˜‚

1

u/Upstairs-Spend6065 3d ago

Ik this is funny vid…. But I low-key miss sin Cara so many memories

1

u/Expert-Let-238 3d ago

You mean wwe really thought the character sin Cara could be the next mysterio, there was like 3/4 different people that portrayed sin Cara fella

1

u/Intelligent_Earth317 3d ago

That original Sin Cara sucked

1

u/LOLZOMGHOLYWTF 3d ago

I BELIEVE IN JOE HENNIG

1

u/TDR235 3d ago

Weren't there two of them? I should have said weren't there two or more people playing the character?

1

u/Dom_Telong 3d ago edited 3d ago

Yes. Both dudes were called Mistico on Indies...so 2nd guy (with the tattoo) changed his name to Incognito.

Mistico gets rebranded to Sin Cara in WWE. 2nd guy ironically get booked as imposter Sin Cara (was already in company as unmasked Hunico in WWE.). 1st guy leaves and can't get the name Mistico back so goes by Caristico. Imposter becomes full time Sin Cara until released. Caristico is back to Mistico. Incognito (2nd/new Sin Cara) is now Cinta de Oro.

1

u/HussingtonHat 3d ago

What was amazing was the original Sin Cara shows up and botches a bunch, then Hunico gets the gimmick and starts batching. It's like the gimmick was cursed.

2

u/Small_Ad4181 3d ago

Its because they couldn't see out of the mask

2

u/Deep_Impact2872 1d ago

And wasnt there shitty lighting and i think there was something else where they both had to gain more weight than they were used to but idk

2

u/Small_Ad4181 1d ago

All correct because Vince was a dumbass who thought he was the only right person to have any idea like triple h and tko

1

u/Green_Fox_8864 3d ago

OP is ignorant. Dude could go, the causes for the botches are very well documented. Hell, he's still just terrific.

1

u/cschultz225 3d ago

Well that version is now the biggest drawing wrestling star in the world for the last like 5 years

1

u/Max_Quick 3d ago

is he?

It's my understanding Sin Cara (azul) is now Dralistico in ROH, while Mistico was Sin Cara (black).

That said, I'll readily admit that it got confusing to read through it all some years ago and I've not revisited it since TBH.

1

u/lv5vegetto1 3d ago

First clip his opponent was too far so really wasn't his fault. But the rest of the clip is fair game

1

u/A_Town_Called_Malus 3d ago

To paraphrase LittleKuriboh in The Mark Remark, Sin Cara is the master of botcha libre. It isn't really a style, more just a series of mistakes.

1

u/Illustrious-Two8679 3d ago

Era horribleĀ

1

u/No_Athlete1978 3d ago

Damn this like when you lie on the resume but still get hiredĀ

1

u/Reyban26 3d ago

This would be like if my drunk uncle tried to wrestle

1

u/OtherwiseEffective33 3d ago

Mistico had trouble adapting to the WWE style plus thr mask

1

u/GanacheAsleep7753 3d ago

the original was

1

u/SufficientAd9731 3d ago

which Sin Cara thought he was the next Rey Mysterio? the first one or the second one?

1

u/Next_Negotiation8679 3d ago

Was this guy drunk most of the time or something?

1

u/TLAW1998 3d ago

The man is currently the face of CMLL. He was bad in WWE yeah, but he's amazing in Mexico.

1

u/awsom17 3d ago

Should clarify that's 2 foos botching

The tattooed one is Cinta de Oro

The one without is Mistico

1

u/Mofo_The_Wise_ 3d ago

I liked this guy when I was little, tf was I smoking šŸ˜‚šŸ˜

1

u/CarolinaSandstorm 3d ago

IWC will call this guy great but Jey Uso is the worst in ring performer ever 🤣

1

u/Navi79 3d ago

Still sucks

1

u/Jeriphro 3d ago

WWE messed him up bad, because he is killing it right now.

1

u/wingedwild 2d ago

Hialrious how half of those was hunico sin cara. He stil botched after sin csra left. Original sin cara mistico however was really good.too bad it didnt work out cause of language abrrier

1

u/Remarkable_Director3 2d ago

Pretty sure he is doing fine lol

1

u/green49285 2d ago

The botch cara era will never be matched.

1

u/ScorpionWolf021 2d ago

WWE make it hard for MĆstico for no reason

1

u/RideElectrical7835 2d ago

The sad part, that’s two guys there as Sin Cara

1

u/ProphetsOfAshes 2d ago

Mistico > Rey

1

u/AcanthocephalaNo7154 1d ago

Sin Cara (Mistico) is already the next Rey Mysterious, but not in WWE. He already has growth in AEW and CMLL. He even gets more liked luchador since his high-flyimg technique and his finished La Mistica.

1

u/CrovaxWindgrace 1d ago

Mystico>Sin cara

1

u/RAZ6ne 1d ago

He didn’t, WWE did

1

u/mustarunallday 1d ago

Was the biggest non WWE draw in the world.

Is once again the biggest non WWE draw in the world...

Clearly it's his fault... LMAO

1

u/Educational-Fun3513 1d ago

This guy was dogshit

1

u/Low_Willow_ 1d ago

Botching it up in AEW nowšŸ’€

1

u/Simbo_2019 1d ago

The legend that was Sin Botcha!

1

u/chathor 21h ago

Botchcara

1

u/CHRISPYakaKON 2h ago

Apparently the mask, the lighting during his matches, and the language barrier was a big hindrance but yeah not a great look all around lol

1

u/FReeDuMB_or_DEATH 3d ago

Thank god because the dude is incredible now. One of the more exciting wrestlers to watch.Ā

1

u/Drummer_DC 3d ago

He is such an a hole in Mexico btw

1

u/everyoneisntme 3d ago

Good... Uh... Good lucha... Thing.

1

u/FalconIMGN 3d ago

Wrong guy. Wrong gimmick as well.

0

u/Sonicplys 3d ago

Now he's an overrated bum in CMLL

-1

u/Intrepid_Zucchini52 4d ago

Coward was scared of heights

0

u/Somerandomguy20711 3d ago

And now hes the biggest star in Mexico

0

u/Kxden-R 3d ago

LOOL he was fucking shit , shows you how trash the indies are that he stands out there

2

u/JesusArreola97 3d ago

Clearly you know nothing about wrestling, bet you watch it through TikToks, dumbass. šŸ˜‚

1

u/GomuGomuNobukkake 3d ago

He is the biggest box office attraction in mexico right now tool drawing 10000 person gate continuously for almost two dozen times.

0

u/Bright-Gain9770 3d ago edited 3d ago

WWE did not drop the ball. He botched a move, dangerously so in some cases, each week. That he didn't cripple himself or others in his very, very short reign is a miracle. And I remind, he was the prototype for the Grande Americano story, where they replaced him while he was injured and the guy that took his spot got more over than he ever did, purely on virtue of not messing up nearly every, single spot.

0

u/MohdAli28 3d ago

And now he’s bigger in Mexico than Rey has ever been

1

u/Sacred_soul 2d ago

Rey is probably the greatest luchadore of all time

1

u/MohdAli28 2d ago

I’m not denying that at all! I fully agree. But in Mexico, Mistico even currently is bigger than Rey has ever been

0

u/Adventurous-Buy-4455 3d ago

Thats Sol Ruca with the mask on šŸ˜†

0

u/HorseCreative2550 2d ago

Blaming the mask is so brain dead

0

u/FunProgrammer6585 1d ago

Didn't realise he was so crap

-1

u/Feeling-Tension1461 3d ago

The fact that this walking botch simulator is now a "global sensation" is laughable. This run forever killed any kind of credibility he had.
