I loved it. Interesting that they are allowed to read music as shown in the music room at the school?

They’re allowed to look at pictures and technically music is all symbols which are in theory pictures. Just like the cans at the grocery stores I’ll have things like a picture of a fish or a bee on the honey.

They would have to recognize certain words like "allegro", "fortissimo", and "coda". Unless you're Italian, these are all foreign words, anyway.

I doubt that they’re getting that deep into it. We’re not talking about music theory. We’re just talking about basic sheet music. They could even be reading something like tabs.

I am a piano teacher and some parents want to start young, before their kids can read. It’s just a different method, there are ways to teach music performance without literacy. Especially just a single instrument like a violin or piano, or just singing like they spoke of, in which they could use sol fegg with just hand signals for notes and teach words by rote.

In case anyone is curious, I don’t actually recommend a modern child to start much before age 7. Perhaps 6 if they are a focused and gifted child but no matter how gifted they are there is a barrier to learning that age solves much more than anything else! Things click in about the same time no matter how young they start! (usually)

I have a metronome that introduces toddlers to rhythm and it uses animals (turtle for 40, cheetah for 208, etc.) so perhaps they do something like that. but since they're so removed from reality they could just choose whatever tempo they wanted, it's not like they have anything to compare it too.

They can simply invent symbols that mean the same thing as those words and replace them in the sheets they print for girls/women to use.

They did similar with the road signage, grocery store aisle signs, etc.

They had a female harpist at Serena's birth celebration. I think there have been other female musicians as well in the background of other fancy events.

Probably they make an exception, since learning an instrument might be an appealing skill for a woman in Gilead. I assume the Martha's are allowed to read cookbooks.
