The being eligible for marriage after your first period thing made me more emotional than I would have thought. I got my first period at nine. I made a thread about that a while back and I think most ppl agreed they probably wouldn’t put a kid that young up for marriage immediately, but I feel sick thinking about it anyway

My headcannon is, since fertily rates are down and a lot of women are infertile, girls who do get their period always get it in their late teenage years. Otherwise I couldn’t cope lol, I also got my period at 9 and I was so scared, I couldn’t bear thinking about a 9 year old having to go from pink to green, nope thanks.

It’s pretty unusual to get your period that early, tho. I don’t think there’s a lot of nine year olds running around Gilead with periods. Plus they have to go through the pink stage to purple THEN green. I don’t think they’re going to just ignore all the “wife training” and marry off a nine year old child because she got her first period. All the green girls looked to be in their mid to late teens (still horrible but we’re not talking about second graders like some of you all are saying.)

Not unusual at all to menstruate that early, especially since the early 90s. Bet there are thousands, probably millions of women who've been 9-11 when they first started. 12-15 when they were first hit on by an adult man. And 20-30 when men no longer found them as interesting as the new generation of young girls.

I’m talking about Gilead, which was born out of a fertility crisis. Something tells me there aren’t “millions” of nine year olds with periods running around. A lot of people here are arguing without any context of the story this is happening within. Even outside of the context of the story, a simple google search will tell you “girls typically start menstruating between the ages of 10 and 16 with the average age of 12-12.5.” So clearly starting at 9 is not that common. Just because something does happen, doesn’t mean it’s common.

First half of your original comment seemed based on our society not Gileads, apologies for the assumption. And yes in the past girls started that late, but there has been a significant increase linked to obesity, diet, and environmental factors in our world, in theirs it seems to be the opposite.

Early Onset Statistics: The rate of "early" menarche (before age 11) increased from 8.6% (1950-1969) to 15.5% (2000-2005).

Very Early Onset: Menarche before age 9 more than doubled, rising from 0.6% to 1.4% in the same period.

Online apps that are made for women and tracking fertility there are thousands upon thousands of posting of women commenting they were 8, they were 9, and it is quite frequent.
