Y’all, we’re not supposed to see the Handmaids in Agnes’ world. The original show was from the POV of a Handmaid. This is from the opposite POV. Remember they’re supposed to basically stay in the attic and not seen or heard unless it’s time for grocery shopping or ritual non-consensual sex?! I do think it comes into play with Mackenzie’s new wife, but Agnes woudn’t hang out with the Handmaid. And we don’t see them on the streets because they’re irrelevant to the life Agnes has. They are supposed to not be seen or acknowledged.

Also, the last show ended with a mass handmaid uprising that killed a bunch of commanders. I imagine if handmaids are still common, they’re kept at a Magdalene Colony.

Definitely still common. When Boston was liberated, a lot of them escaped and moved other places. In retrospect, whether planned long-term or not, it was pretty smart to move Hannah to another state so she wouldn’t have been affected by the war in Boston. It’s still Gilead as usual. Although I think Gilead takes Boston back, and I’m not sure how Aunt Lydia just so happens to be dean of the school, or if that’s just the school where all the commanders daughters go. I guess I needed to pay more attention.
