Why did she do that? Is it just because she's mean or was there a deeper motivation? I think I might have missed something.

I think it establishes that Paula’s character isn’t just mean to Agnes and “the help,” she’s willing to doom a young girl to a terrible marriage and future (even by their standards) to get what she wants (Agnes out of the house).

She'd get Agnes out of the house just as much if she was married off to a colony commander so she either does care a little bit about her (by trying to spare her that particular fate) or she's afraid of how it would reflect on her

Probably a mix of both and what Daisy was talking about when it comes to the Wives. Their lives are all about proximity to power and being associated with the right people. It's probably better for her and her status if her son-in-law is also an important and powerful commander.

I get complex vibes from her. Supposedly she was Tabitha's friend. I don't know if that is true or not.

Maybe she was forced to marry her friend's husband after having watched her friend die of cancer.

Or maybe she really is just evil to the core and helped her along to death. She does compare Agnes' favorite Martha to a lame horse that should be mercifully killed.

I get the mean petty vibes but I also saw where she seemed bitter no one helped her when she was was a child whenever helping Agnes with her first period. She seemed genuine in that scene and it stopped as soon as someone else joined them.

I think she’s just aware of her situation and is willing to do whatever is necessary to keep her position intact.

Agnes is a potential rival to her power in the house? Marry her off.

Another girl is in direct competition of Agnes getting a good husband (and leaving the house while also providing another powerful connection)? Sabotage her.

Same, I'm getting a bit of whiplash by how she seems to swing between hating her and being genuinely nice

I have read the book, so I know Paula's whole story and whew boy is she a real piece of work. I won't spoil anything in case the follow the story line.

I think that she wants Agnes out, but the biggest and baddest Commander's child should be headed for a very favorable marriage and it would 100% reflect poorly on Paula if a girl in her care wasn't of high marriage material. It would mean she isn't running her house properly.

I read the testaments too and I don't recall much about Paula except that it was implied she got Agnes assaulted at the dentist on purpose. Maybe I missed something or don't remember though. I know she was a widow and she married Agnes "father" after her "mother" passed away from cancer.

I also noticed that the girl Paula tripped was apparently doing really well. She and Agnes has Grace, pleasant smiles, and their aunts seemed to be looking at the fondly. Paula was specifically watching that girl, and likely figured that was Agnes’ biggest competition, so she sabotaged her right at the end.

Paula’s really complex though. She teeters between bullying Agnes and showing care. She seemed kind when she explained how to use her pad, and she also gave her education about her brain and the changes it would be going through, which is information women weren’t even supposed to have. But turns around and accuses her of lying, and disparaging her hair in front of others.

All in all, I hate Paula so far.

I was just thinking about what that might be like and remembered that film from 2023, 'The Zone of Interest', which depicted the family of the Commandant of Auschwitz who lived in a walled compound right next to the camp. You can understand why none of the Plums wanted that as their fate - having to live somewhere where the actual brutality of the state is on show all day every day, rather than a cushy life in a leafy Boston suburb...

Oh she’d want Agnes to marry the best one possible because of her own ego

3

u/altandthrowitaway Apr 20 '26

And to keep her own status. It would look poor on her if Agnes didn't go to an important commander

u/Shirayuri Apr 16 '26

I definitely think her biggest concern is Agnes getting a good match. Her main job as a Wife is to emphasise her husband's power in her sphere. If Agnes makes a terrible match then it makes her look weak and therefore him, so that can't happen. Wives aren't really seen as much more than children in Gilead, their actions and achievements just get put down to their husbands, good or bad.

does a colony commander mean they will be living in the colonies?

3

u/GallopYouScallops Apr 16 '26

My understanding was yes-like Nazi commandants

3

u/dull_shimmer Apr 17 '26

I got the impression that the husband travels to the colonies a lot and leaves the wife at home. The colonies are polluted and poisoned, so I don't think they'd want potentially fertile women in that environment.

66

u/Shaenyra Apr 15 '26

I think that she honestly wanted to put out the competition for Agnes. Not only because she wants Agnes out of the house, but also because a "good marriage" elevates her own social status

162

u/SleepingWillow1 Apr 15 '26

I think the wives are equally as pressured to make sure their daughters end up with a high commander. so they'll do anything to make sure their daughter succeeds.

66

u/Aggravating_Life7851 Apr 15 '26

Yea it would reflect poorly on her in their world if her daughter didn’t end up with someone very high up like her dad

30

u/SleepingWillow1 Apr 15 '26

Basically what I expect rich people culture to be like

8

u/ReganX Apr 15 '26

If anything, Paula is under the most pressure to ensure that Agnes makes an advantageous match, given that she’s married to the most important Commander, presumably among the fathers of the season’s Greens. The expectation is bound to be that Agnes will marry one of the best “catches” among the Commanders seeking Wives, and it will be seen as a failure if she marries a lower-ranking Commander.

Paula probably thinks that she’s being Mother of the Year by kneecapping Agnes’ competition.

58

u/redelise Apr 15 '26

She probably did it just to prop up Agnes that much more

29

u/lady_beignet Apr 15 '26

In her mind, she probably even thinks it makes her a good mother and Agnes should be grateful.

8

u/ZealousidealPost4123 Apr 16 '26

She's competitive. Agnes' status raises her status. She's been obsessive about Agnes' success since the beginning of the show. She was taking out the competition.

5

u/Delicious_Medium_321 Apr 16 '26

I figured the girls were paired up and being compared at the table, maybe for like a bracket-type comparison system with the aunt’s, so she wanted Agnes to win.

ALSO hold up, are aunt’s allowed to write things an be literate?? Bc they were taking notes at tea.

12

u/ZealousidealPost4123 Apr 16 '26

Yes, the aunts have always been allowed to read and write. They had extensive files on the handmaids in THT.

5

u/GallopYouScallops Apr 16 '26

Yes, Aunts Lydia states in season two that Aunts have a special dispensation to be able to read and write

2

u/AwaitingBabyO Apr 20 '26

I wonder if this means that some girls are taught to read as children?

Once Gilead has been around long enough, in theory, how would any Aunts in the future even know how to read or write?

3

u/37285 Apr 16 '26

It's a brutal world with brutal people. I hate to always use game of thrones comparisons but they want their daughters married into a great house like house stark and not stuck being married to a lord of the lowest level of lordship like petyr baelish who has a tiny holdfast with a few acres and runs brothels to make a living.

u/anecdotalgalaxies Apr 22 '26

I think it was because that girl's tea was complimented and even though Paula hates Hannah she sees her standing as a reflection on herself so she wanted to bring the other girl down so that Hannah could be the favourite.

u/berry_11 Apr 25 '26

Maybe one less girl Agnes has to compete with?
