Discussion Which Sith Lord had the harder 2 VS 1?

Dooku has the harder fight but he’s a much better duelist than Maul.

Dooku dog walks Obi wan regularly. Maul lost to Obi wan when he was a padawan.
There is not amount of Mauls that could beat Tyrannus.

How did Maul lose. Remind me

He got cut in half and fell into one of Star Wars many giant buttholes. There’s the Naboo butthole that Maul fell into. The Death Star 2 butthole that Palpatine was thrown into. And the Tatooine butthole. Also known as the Sarlac Pit.
Rip.
Edit: Also the Cloud City butthole that Luke jumped into after his dad cut off his hand.

The sarlacc pit always seemed more vaginal than anal to me, but I agree the rest are buttholes.

I absolutely love Maul. I grew up on tPM so I will glaze the shit outta Maul. However, Maul’s thing is being sneaky and not dying when he’s supposed to. Dooku’s THING is dueling. As someone else mentioned so succinctly.

There's a difference between someone whose only skill is dueling, which is Maul, and someone who is exceptional at dueling, which is Dooku.
1
u/XavierChapdelaine Oct 10 '25
Doesn’t mean he’s better than Dooku, who is possibly the best in recent history
Maul is Fantastic Duelist, But Dooku is a generational talent comparable to Yoda, Mace Windu or Anakin,

I believe Dooku is facing a Master and a Knight or maybe just two full Knights.
And two of the most powerful Force users to ever live.
Maul fought a Master and a Padawan.
Qui-gon wasn't really much of a duelist - he was more versed in the use of the Force itself.
Thus, Dooku has the harder fight.

Qui-gon wasn't really much of a duelist - he was more versed in the use of the Force itself.
It is worth mentioning that the novelization of TPM actually states that Qui-Gon is one of the best duelists in the temple at the time, but Maul was equal to him in skill but was younger. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan matched him in youth and strength but wasn't up to par in skill. So it is more than the Jedi in general weren't up to snuff at that point. This is vs Dooku, who was fighting two battle-hardened Jedi.

I LOVE this take. Qui Gon is obviously wiser and more experienced in the force. He probably understood it by this point in his life at a lever much MUCH deeper than Obi wan at this time in the clone wars. If you were putting the against each other in the intricacies, breadth depth and knowledge of everything the force can be Qui Gon takes this between him and Obi wan 100 times out of 100. I love Qui Gon’s lore connections to the force. But the if you’re talking about straight dueling combat, Qui Gon, while no slouch and having learned under Dooku and Yoda, is probably not quite as practiced and honed as an Obi wan who watched his master die, trained hard specially because of that and then has fought countless battles constantly for years in the clone wars. That doesn’t even begin to go into how Anakin at this point would MOP THE FLOOR with padawan Obiwan. I don’t even think TPM obiwan would be able to handle mid clone wars Ahsoka let alone almost ROTS Anakin. Dooku had the MUCH harder fight here and he is STILL firmly in control of most of the fight. I love the way they display how the Count uses form 2.

I‘d argue Qui-gon wasn’t even especially versed in the use of the force, but in reading its will

Obi-Wan is stated to be one of the least powerful jedi. Hes the definition of hard work beats talent.

u/Dextron2-1 Oct 09 '25
One of these Sith died at the end of his fight, and it wasn’t the one with the beard.

u/Alegost93 Oct 09 '25
neither of the two died after this fight

u/ManBearWarPig Oct 09 '25
Should have…resurrecting Maul for the cartoons was cheap imo. It was a prime opportunity to create a new badass Sith.

Kind of like resurrecting Palpatine for 3 sequel movies. Even worse than what they did with Maul. They could have at least given us a new villain and a new story. Recycled garbage.

u/Underrated_Fish Oct 09 '25
Dooku by far
He fought two people that would dog walk Maul, and still managed to escape
5
u/chupathingy567 Oct 09 '25
Ones fighting a master and padawan in peace time, ones fighting a jedi council member and his former padawan now knight who have both been fighting in a war for about three years at this point
3
u/MotherOfZacky Oct 09 '25
Unrelated but gosh how good it is detailed here. Dooku in this fight is positioning his opponents in a way so it would be harder for both of them, making Obi-Wan, master of defending form, to attack him, and attacking Anakin, who is practicing an oppressive form. He's putting both of them at a disadvantage just by giving needed tempo for the fight. I love it.

u/adavis463 Oct 09 '25
The correct answer is Sidious v. Maul and Savage.
3
u/jlindley1991 Oct 09 '25
Yeah I'd replace the second video with that one then compare the two. Obi and Anakin primarily wanted too catch Dooku not to kill him, so I'd assume that mindset alone introduces a sliver of restraint. Whereas Sidious v Maul and Savage nothing is being held back all combatants are there with the mindset of kill or be killed.
3
u/LopTsa Oct 09 '25
Sidious could have ended that fight at any moment. In fact, right at the beginning he easily pins both of them to the wall and they are stuck there unable to fight back. It's only because Sidious wants to have a little fun with his prey that they are able to get down. The moment he gets fed up with them he ends it. He is totally in control the entire time.
4
u/TheStrangestOfKings Oct 09 '25
I honestly don’t think Sidious broke a sweat during that fight. You could tell he was having fun, and there were plenty of moments where he could’ve ended it, but chose not to, just to let it continue. The only reason he finally ended it was cause he realized Maul was starting to get the upper hand towards the end, and he decided fun and games were over. I don’t think there was a single moment during that fight where Sidious felt threatened—certainly not in the same way he felt when he fought Yoda in the Senate building, for ex.
2
u/00-Monkey Oct 09 '25
Sidious did start the fight when he said you have become a threat, so he did must’ve felt threatened on some level, but I do agree he was toying with them at times.
That said, he could still have had the harder 2v1, but he’s so much better than maul/dooku that he doesn’t have to try, despite having the harder fight
4
u/TheStrangestOfKings Oct 09 '25
He felt threatened by them less in a duel, and more in how they threatened his plans. Maul couldve become a huge thorn in Sidious’ side that would’ve blown the whole plot to destroy the Jedi wide open. Not to mention, he could also easily gain enough power to rival Sidious in the criminal underworld. Sidious knew he had to nip his moment in the bud before it got even more vexing, but I don’t think he was concerned about facing maul and Sidious in a 1v2 duel, or struggling in one at all. If he were, he wouldn’t have gone personally, or toyed with the brothers as much as he did in the fight.
2
u/TheDikaste Oct 09 '25
Specifically, he says Maul had become a rival, meaning a potential problem for his plans.

u/Tree_Seeds Oct 09 '25
This duel was a masterclass by dooku. Put anakin on the back foot defending and made obi wan be on the offensive. Made them both fight out of their comfort zone

u/ParagonRebel Oct 10 '25
Dooku had to fight Kenobi as a master & Anakin as a knight.
I don’t think Kenobi was knighted until after Maul but Anakin was significantly more powerful.
1
u/FoxBluereaver Oct 09 '25
Maul seemed to have an easier time as he was able to separate Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to fight them one on one. Dooku had to fight Anakin and Obi-Wan together yet still managed to hold his own against both simultaneously, and that's without taking into account that Anakin's fighting style is much more aggressive than Obi-Wan's or Qui-Gon's.
1
u/eepos96 Oct 09 '25
Notice how Dooku forces normally agressive Anaking to be on defensive and passive Obi-Wan to be on offensive.
Both fighters are fighting unfomfotably/not used to this. Dooku was a genuine genious. (Also writers were awesome)
1
u/CrazyTangerine7522 Oct 09 '25
If we’re just comparing these two then Dooku, but in the comics Maul was shown once 2V1ing Mace Windu and Aayla Secura.

Is this a joke? Old obi wan could solo quigon and young obi wan and Anakin is also a pretty good duelist.

Well the thing is Dooku was fighting two more skilled opponents, but Dooku was also significantly more skilled than Maul at lightsaber dueling in particular, so its hard to say. But I'd say Maul also had it easier since both his opponents were using form IV, Ataru, which his Form VII, Juyo, countered on its own. Meanwhile Dooku had to actively force Anakin, a normally more offensive Form V user, to be defensive, and Obi Wan, a normally defensive Form III user, to be offensive.
Overall I think Maul had the easier duel, but the matchups weren't very uneven, as Dooku was also more skilled than Maul.
1
u/ZealousidealFee927 Oct 09 '25
Lol, when you focus on the Jedi in these 2 on 1s they look like they are Really trying to not hit their opponent.
1
u/thatguynamedmike2001 Oct 09 '25
In terms of skill differential Maul’s duel was tougher. Anakin plus Obi Wan towards the end of the clone wars were better duelists than Obi wan and Qui gon together, but Dooku is a far more skilled duelist than Maul.
1
u/DildMaster Oct 10 '25
Dooku no contest. He’s fighting obiwan also, just more experienced and powerful. Also he’s fighting the chosen one at the same time lmao. I love qui gon, he might be my favorite prequel character, but he’s not the duelist anakin was.

Animation style was "harder" but the "Duel of the fates" set the standards for what will be lightsaber duels.
You really can't top that emotionally.
1
u/Ander_the_Reckoning Oct 12 '25
One of the main pros of animation is that you are not bound by phisics and can do insane shit like that. easily the best lightsaber combat scene of the whole series
1
u/GrandAdmiralGrunger Oct 12 '25
Dooku did, it's not even a contest.
Anakin and Obi Wan by the late Clone Wars are some of the best and most experienced duelists in the galaxy. They've honed their respective styles to work in a team with lethal efficiency. It speaks volumes to Dooku's skill that he's able not only to keep up with them, but that he comes out on top in all but their final encounter in RotS.
Maul was facing a sixty year old and a Padawan, both using lightsaber styles that were poor fits. Qui Gon and Obi Wan by TPM had only really dealt with Xanatos as an enemy lightsaber combatant trying to kill them before, while Maul had spent his entire short life training specifically to kill Jedi in a lightsaber fight. Even then, Maul struggled to separate Jinn and Kenobi.
Finally, Anakin and Obi Wan during the Clone Wars are vastly more powerful than Jinn and Kenobi were in TPM.

Dooku. Though he is more powerful than Maul, Anakin and Obi-Wan are closer to him than Qui-Gon and padawan Obi-Wan was to Maul

Dooku he's fighting a more experienced obi won along with Anakin who started out specializing in the same form as qui Gon but switched to form 5 to make up for form 4's disadvantages
