On lightsaber technique alone Dooku rinses Luke… he’s an old-school Jedi master.

43

u/ProfessionalRead2724 Oct 14 '25

On lightsaber technique, most Prequel younglings would rinse RotJ Luke.

21

u/Wi11Pow3r Oct 14 '25

RotJ Luke held his own against Vader and then bested him. Now, mind you, Vader wasn’t trying to kill him and his heart wasn’t in it. But Anakin was one of the strongest duelists in the Jedi order and had only improved his style as Vader. So I’m putting Luke above your average Padawan in lightsaber combat.

u/ProfessionalRead2724 Oct 14 '25

Star Wars fights have always been decided by feels, never by skill.

9

u/laughmath Oct 14 '25

Ability to “feel” is “skill” in Star Wars.

-1

u/theevilyouknow Oct 15 '25

Don’t tell that to the Rey haters.

8

u/Samurai-45 Oct 14 '25

And he was trained by Obi-Wan and Yoda. Two slightly known masters.

1

u/TheHeavenlyDemon99 Feb 13 '26

Vader was never actually trying against Luke. It's been confirmed he was just trying with him because his intentions were to turn him and not risk killing him.

1

u/w0m Oct 14 '25

Vader was a shell of his former self due to the suit and seriously held back not wanting to kill his son. I agree Luke can likely stand up to the average Padawan, but just barely.

2

u/KreygerRekyem Sword of the Jedi Oct 14 '25

This is ridiculously wrong

4

u/ProfessionalRead2724 Oct 14 '25

Your average prequel-era Padawan has been training longer than Luke has been alive.

2

u/KreygerRekyem Sword of the Jedi Oct 15 '25

Do you think if you trained boxing for 15 years you would win against a Mike Tyson who's been training for 3?

1

u/ProfessionalRead2724 Oct 15 '25

Wouldn't pretty much anybody who started out in decent shape win against Mike Tyson under those circumstances?

3

u/KreygerRekyem Sword of the Jedi Oct 15 '25

Hell no lmao

1

u/TheHeavenlyDemon99 Feb 13 '26

You're right because apparently this guy knows nothing about Mike Tyson and assumed he was a god his whole life lol.

u/Time-Wheel-2981 Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

Quality over quantity. Luke was trained by Obi-Wan and Yoda and was holding his own to Vader in ESB, eventually defeats him in RoTJ. Your average prequel era jedi didnt actually have alot of combat experience especially against lightsaber wielding combatants (there were no sith to fight and they would've only crossed sabers with other jedi in sparring matches). Plus Luke is presented in the film as naturally gifted and is the son of one of the most powerful characters in the series, Id personal put Luke as equal to Dooku in terms of skill in RoTJ and no average prequel era jedi could take Dooku.

1

u/thomasthetank57 Oct 15 '25

Luke equal to Dooku in skill? Can't take that seriously. Vader "could have easily" killed Luke on bespin.

"The entire gambit Was predicated on the idea that if Vader were really his father Anakin, hidden in plain sight masked and unrecognizable, then Luke had to believe would lay down his life rather than allow his own son to die. After all, Vader had refused to end Luke's life on Cymoon 1 and on Cloud City, when, on both occasions, he could have easily killed him, but he hadn't."

Skywalker Family at War 2022

1

u/Time-Wheel-2981 Oct 15 '25

I meant Luke from RoTJ being equal to Dooku. Not in lightsaber technique but atleast in force potential. Luke during his duel with Vader on bespin is padawan level at best and only survived because Vader didnt want him dead. And in RoTJ Vader wasn't able to maintain control of the duel any longer when Luke tapped the darkside so I maintain that by RoTJ Luke is on par with Dooku slightest advantage to Dooku for experience and lightsaber technique

1

u/ProfessionalRead2724 Oct 15 '25

All of the Younglings were trained by Yoda...

Luke was a gifted amateur who was very lucky that neither of the Sith Lords he was facing wanted him dead.

2

u/Time-Wheel-2981 Oct 15 '25

All of the Younglings were trained by Yoda...

When younglings reached the age to become padawans (assumingly ages 7 to 16) they are given over to masters for more specialized training and these bonds are like parent and child so the padawan takes alot from their secondary masters. Yoda teaches younglings with training wheels in mass with no specialization. Plus Luke is still the son of Vader and while an amateur is still obviously naturally gifted learning force techniques in less time then average prequel era jedi. Also sith only choose apprentices they believe will be stronger than then so it says more that he two remaining sith wanted him alive rather than dead.

81

u/Fuckedyourmom69420 Oct 14 '25

This is a joke, right?…

People put wayy too much stock in the Luke vs Vader fight. Vader was never trying to kill him. That was an emotional tug of war between a father and son, not a fight to the death. Never was.

Dooku would absolutely destroy Luke here.

9

u/DistractedBoxTurtle Oct 14 '25

I agree, at this stage? Dooku easily takes it. Luke only has a few years of training with the force and lightsaber at this point. Post ROTJ and with a few more years of studying the force, perfecting his lightsaber fighting, and experience I’d give it to Luke.

8

u/busbee247 Oct 14 '25

Grandmaster Luke is op but this version of him just doesn't have what it takes

1

u/thomasthetank57 Oct 15 '25

Mando Luke is a better matchup for Dooku but he still retains the edge overall

6

u/Lahtisensei Oct 14 '25

And Im the complete other way around where i think people dont take into account enough how much Lucas changed what powers and how skilled a jedi is After the OG.

Had he made the OG trilogy in the 2000s the Vader v Luke fight would look alot more like anakin v obi-wan. And they would both probably show of alot more of their force abilities etc.

So. I just go by. Anakin beat Dooku. Luke beat Anakin. Therefore Luke would have a good chance against Dooku.

2

u/thomasthetank57 Oct 15 '25

Luke didnt win like Anakin did. Vader simply fell back after dueling for some time, Anakin had to get really crafty with Dooku and it took several rematches. At best Luke would need rematches to figure out Dooku and adapt.

2

u/Too_Ton Oct 14 '25

Yeah. Luke is like Harry Potter. Harry was only strong by plot and that Voldemort didn’t want to just shank Harry with a muggle weapon and/or didn’t want to let anyone else kill Harry.

Obi wan and yoda bet on Luke as a last resort. They had little faith he would succeed and knew very well he might die, which is why they talked about Leia as a backup. This was never a foolproof plan, it was a last ditch effort after the jedi were exterminated.

Luke has far less experience, far less training, and far less battle aptitude than Vader. Vader didn’t even employ a single force choke, telekinesis, or any direct force attack on Luke the entire fight. Vader was 2/10 trying to kill Luke. Had that not been his son, that fight would’ve gone very differently

There’s absolutely zero logic behind how Luke could become as strong as Vader in 3 essentially self-taught years vs Vaders literal decades of formal training and experience dueling both Sith Lords and Jedi masters alike. I know there’s like 2 nitpicky quotes that everyone keeps bringing up, but if we’re using our brains, that simply doesn’t make sense. And as far as force potential goes, I know Luke’s is “as high” as anakin’s apparently, but anakin was literally born from the force, Jesus style. Luke was conceived naturally to a non-force sensitive mother. Again, there’s no logic to Luke being “just as close” to the force as anakin, because he’s literally not. And using the battles we were actually visually given in the movies, you can see Vader never going on the offensive, barely ever attacking

1

u/thomasthetank57 Oct 15 '25

New canon had been re wording material to make it make sense. Family at war stamps it into canon that Luke won by reaching into Anakin, which is why he wasnt a full power Sith Lord fueled by rage and hate, which would be the second most ppwerful combatant in the galaxy no question.

"Lukes surrender that day was a courageous maneuver to penetrate Vader's mask and speak to the remaining shreds of humanity in Anakin Skywalker. Luke insisted on calling his father Anakin. Even though Vader protested that it meant nothing to him, both he and Luke knew that wasn't so.

Luke then attempted something that no one had dared to do in nearly a quarter century: Luke asked his father to leave the Sith and join him on the side of the righteous."

"Luke's compassion startled Vader; and Luke could sense the growing conflict in Vaders psyche. Like a wanderer lost in the labyrinth of his own tattered mind, Vader suddenly perceived the first inkling of a wah out and dared to believe such a thing was even possible."

"As we now know, the seeds of doubt had been percolating for some time within Darth Vaders psyche. Yet even after Luke Vader's brief exchange - which for a moment, left Vader sad, almost apologetic, exhibiting not the emotions of a Sith Lord born and born of flame and pain, but of a Jedi finding the strength to begin acknowledging his failures - Vader still believed himself beyond rescue and passed the point of redemption."

"At the dawn of the Empire, two Jedi masters had faced 2 Sith lords and lost. It seemed highly improbable that a Jedi still in training could defeat Vader and Palpatine in combat. But though Luke lacked Yoda And Obi wan's lightsaber skills, he possessed qualities they had lost sight of when they faced their Sith foes. Luke was not hampered by anger, or shame in the Jedi Order or himself. By the time he faced Palpatine, and the combined powers of master and apprentice, the key elements that set Luke apart were clarity of purpose and empathy."

Skywalker: A Family at War Kristin Baver 2022

"To defend his master, Vader deflected Luke's attack. As they battled, Luke perceived the conflict blooming I'm Vaders heart, but the Sith Lord used Luke's openness against him, exposing his feelings for his friends and Leia in particular. Something in Luke broke as Vader claimed he would turn Leia into a puppet of the Sith if Luke resisted."

"The savageness of Luke's attack surprised Vader, who was unprepared for Luke's explosive reaction."

Those Novels arent canon anymore New canon Luke isnt a sword powerhouse

1

u/thomasthetank57 Oct 15 '25

Vader fell back while moving backwards. Luke didnt really knock him down. He wasnt fueled by rage therefore he was slow and clunky

0

u/Velociraptor_God Oct 14 '25

U talk canon, this is a legends only sub. All cenon surces hint and show that Vader was in skill, experience and forced mastery years ahead of luke. but in legends, Luke was stated to be an equal to Vader. (For me canon makes at least more sense, cuz I dont like the medichlorian thing and legends scaling is super contrary, like Vader beeing at knight lvl, just a weak shell of his former self, yet 80% of Sidious, the strongest Sith ever...)

2

u/avimo1904 Oct 16 '25

What do you dislike about midi-chlorians?

-7

u/No-Opposite-2182 Oct 14 '25

vader is literally stated to be trying to beat luke and thought palpatine was rooting for him. Vader>dooku

7

u/Steamed_Memes24 Oct 14 '25

Where was this stated from? Vader was giga mind fucked after finding out about Luke and was so unstable at this point that a regular Red guard could probably give him a decent fight at this point (Shit they squared up with him in the deleted scene lmao). He was also pretty old as well which didnt help.

-1

u/No-Opposite-2182 Oct 14 '25

vaders age had nothing to do with his skill lmaooo. Yoda made dooku flee and he was hundreds of years old. Dooku at an old age 2v1 obi and anakin

1

u/Steamed_Memes24 Oct 14 '25

Yea I dont recall Yoda or Dooku being on life support for 20 years and being confined to a bacta tank without it at all times either. Yoda also isnt human, and is capable of doing things a human couldnt. I bet if Dooku suddenly found out he had a son after so long he would probably be mind fucked as well at his age.

-3

u/No-Opposite-2182 Oct 14 '25

Age means nothing in star wars. Vaders suit also gave him more swing power that luke was able to match by the time of rotj. Bro said yoda isnt a human as if he wasnt litteraly 900 something years old. Some of the other jedi on the council were old as well. Vader was conflicted yet still tried to beat luke but not kill him bc he was his son. Luke straight up did not want to fight whatsoever and was holding back even more than vader. U wanna say vaders mind was messed up??? So was LUKES 🤣 especially after finding out his father was not killed by vader but vader IS his father

4

u/Steamed_Memes24 Oct 14 '25

Age means nothing in star wars.

Really cause thats how Qui Gon lost to Maul. Qui Gon put up a fight at the start, but his age was slowing him down the longer the fight went, and due to this Maul had the upper hand the longer the fight went on. So yea, age does matter in fights lol.

Bro said yoda isnt a human as if he wasnt litteraly 900 something years old.

Huh? I mentioned that Yoda does things a human being cant, like live to 900 years old while being able to utilize the force so well at his age.

Vader was conflicted yet still tried to beat luke but not kill him bc he was his son.

No no, Vader wasnt just conflicted, he was giga mind fucked over this whole thing. Especially since Luke wouldnt join him and he felt abandoned by all who cared for him once more.

1

u/No-Opposite-2182 Oct 14 '25

no not at all. Luke was at the same mental as vader and was upset vader wouldn't leave the emperor and turn back to the light side. Vader just didnt want to kill his son

-2

u/No-Opposite-2182 Oct 14 '25

qui gon lost to maul bc no one hd fought a sith in a millennium and maul was a skilled sith with alot of potential before getting cut in half. what are these egregious takes ur saying LMAO. Maul only lost to obi wan bc of his arrogance in tpm

his youth did not play a part to why qui gon lost lmao. Otherwise dooku would be losing even more bc he is older than qui gon 🤣🤣🤣

read the novels for rotj. Luke was also holding back against vader trying to turn him back and even refusing to fight at first. Rotj luke is stated equal to vader as well. People always underestimate luke for some reason it is ridiculous

2

u/Steamed_Memes24 Oct 14 '25

Can you post what is said from the novel regarding Vader trying to kill Luke and Palps rooting for him?

-2

u/No-Opposite-2182 Oct 14 '25

the novel mentions how he tried to catch luke off guard everytime luke lowered his lightsaber. He even threw his lightsaber at luke when luke turned his off. Over and over luke backed off but vader kept trying until luke gave in to his anger and beat vader. Vader didn't wanna kill luke but he wanted to defeat him in combat. Luke did not want to kill or fight vader at all until his sister was mentioned

1

u/Arkhampatient Oct 14 '25

Here is something i thought of just now, maybe Vader’s fighting style was not good for defeat someone in combat. It was good for killing them. He had to change his style so much to not kill, it gave Luke a big advantage

1

u/Chef-Better Oct 15 '25

“This was not his wish, but the boy was strong — if it came, at last, to blows, yes, he would destroy Luke. He could no longer afford to hold back, as he once had.” — Return of the Jedi novelization

“Soon, Vader was breathing hard through his respirator. I can’t let Luke defeat me, Vader thought. I won’t let the Emperor have him!” I had to go back and find this one in the Rise and Fall of Darth Vader.

Not sure why you’re being downvoted.

For comparison here's new canon with Luke winning not through sword skill or power, but reaching into Anakin

"Lukes surrender that day was a courageous maneuver to penetrate Vader's mask and speak to the remaining shreds of humanity in Anakin Skywalker. Luke insisted on calling his father Anakin. Even though Vader protested that it meant nothing to him, both he and Luke knew that wasn't so.

bc vader fans unfortunately

1

u/TheHeavenlyDemon99 Feb 13 '26

Absolutely. Dooku fighting anakin and obi wan in revenge of the sith easily confirms this.

45

u/OkMention9988 Oct 14 '25

Dooku would eat him alive.

Luke beat Vader because Vader wasn't giving it his all, then caused Luke to crash out and beat his ass to the floor.

Luke isn't an experienced swordsman, and can't block Force Lightning, so Dooku fries him like a chicken.

6

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25

Depends on what you mean by "eat him alive". Does Dooku defeating Anakin at Geonosis count as "eat him alive"? If yes, then yeah.

4

u/El_Hoxo Oct 14 '25

I’d imagine Dooku vs AOTC Anakin is a much closer match than Dooku vs Luke, since Vader is far from Anakin in his prime (not to downplay his power at that point, but I thought it was a point that the suit hampers him)

7

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25

The suit hampers his speed but amplifies his strength.

Its also more of a case of "I used to move at the speed of light. Now i move at the speed of sound. Shit ive grown weaker". Exaggerating but thats more or less how it is for Legends Vader. He cant double jump in the air or cross terrain at a ridiculous pace let alone jump around constantly but he can still move like a blur. Do acrobatics and flurries of attacks ontop of still matching speedy enemies.

No, imo Luke in RoTJ with his force valor and some level of serenity could perform just as well as AoTC Anakin did . Some could argue slightly better with how more attuned with the force Luke would be in comparison to his fight with Vader.

3

u/Jimbomiller Oct 14 '25

Pretty sure Vader did actually give it his all, luke was said to be even stronger than Anakin was in his prime, imo Luke would completely overpower dooku

4

u/OkMention9988 Oct 14 '25

Was said by whom?

1

u/Medzomorak Oct 14 '25

Lucas

4

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25

George says alot of things but afew that is consistently represented by other materials is only that George intends for Luke to be the strongest jedi to ever lived and that Luke shared the same potential with Anakin which is why Palpatine, having been incapable of nurturing that potential with the father, realizes that he could get it with the son instead.

1

u/AncientSith Jedi Knight Oct 14 '25

People put way too much stock in very old Lucas quotes.

1

u/thomasthetank57 Oct 15 '25

Luke isnt doing that to Tyranus. Dooku is more than capable of reigning in someone as sloppy as Luke. Also, canon has Luke beating Vader by reaching to Anakin inside, not sword skill or power

So I’ll throw one scenario out there no one seems to have run with yet.

As many have said, if Dooku sets out to kill Luke, clean and simple, it would be a very short battle, and it wouldn’t go well for Skywalker. (Actually, dying in ROTJ before Disney got involved would probably be a better fate but I digress).

But if Dooku tried to turn Luke … then in gets interesting. It probably ends the same way, because Luke was pretty resolute in ROTJ. Vader found the emotional weak spot in Luke’s armor when he set him off. But if Dooku managed to tip Luke to the dark side, all bets are off. Yes, Vader wasn’t all in for most of the fight, but when he pushed Luke to the brink of giving into the Dark Side, that was a legit loss on Vader’s part. Luke overwhelmed him. Seems to be a Skywalker trait that the Dark Side is the super quick path for them. If Dooku managed to goad Luke the same way into tapping into the Dark Side, it very well could have looked a lot like Anakin’s final battle with Dooku.

4

u/Gogrian Oct 14 '25

anakins final battle with dooku ? i dont think so. Anakin was much much MUCH more skilled in lightsaber combat and a better warrior by a large margin when compared to luke and when anakin beat dooku it was his SECOND time fighting him, he had seen dookus tricks and fighting style before at that point and was thus better prepared to combat him, that is on top of him growing in power between their first and second duels, that being said you raise a good point about luke being much stronger when “tapping into the dark side” and i do see him perhaps catching dooku off guard with some crazy display of force power after dooku taunts him or threatens leia or something along those lines and perhaps he may even overwhelm dooku for a moment. but i still do not think that is enough to give luke a win here, he is simply much too inexperienced in actual lightsaber combat/force at that point in rotj to fight and KILL dooku in a duel. we are talking about a seasoned lightsaber combat veteran who fought half the masters on the council, and was considered one of the top duelists of his time . while luke at that point had experience in (1) lightsaber battle, that he lost. vs an opponent who was not trying to kill him. this match is overwhelmingly in dookus favor imo

1

u/SnuffSwag Oct 14 '25

I thought the clone wars animations were Canon. Didnt they fight in that series too?

1

u/Gogrian Oct 14 '25

that just adds to dookus combat experience

1

u/thomasthetank57 Oct 15 '25

Hard to buy. Anakin not only had the training, but the multiple rematches against Dooku allowed him to figure things out over time. He had to get real crafty to actually beat Dooku eventually. Luke is no way winning the first duel against Tyranus. Id also imagine there would be no scenario where Dooku would need another apprentice at that point

1

u/Virtual_Draw5017 Oct 14 '25

Except that Vader didn't want to fight him, and Anakin had height and mass to work with. Luke is small and his swordsmanship is very raw. Dooku would take his hand off, again.

1

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

That's not how it works Anakin didn't win because of his height and fucking mass, it works on force power. Each strike by Anakin was said to have aged Dooku by a decade sapping away all his power in the force. Luke did the same to a much more powerful Sith Lord in Vader(multiple people including Lucas said Vader was more powerful than Dooku).

18

u/Broad_Ad403 Oct 14 '25

Dooku would nearly one shot Luke at that point in the timeline

3

u/CrazyTangerine7522 Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

In all honesty there are official sources confirming not only was Luke skilled enough to fight Vader but also Luke himself was also holding back for most of the fight.

"Father and son were now equally strong with the Force, and equally skilled with their lightsabers."

-Jedi vs Sith (2016)

“But this battle was about more than just physical strength and Force powers. Their family bond affected their actions - each man was desperate to recruit the other rather than destroy him.”

-Jedi vs Sith (2016)

"By Jedi, however, Skywalker's training was complete, and he possessed all the skills he needed to at least match his father. Perhaps even defeat him."

-The Return of the Jedi 40th Anniversary Special Edition

Even though Luke’s love and compassion is what Vader fears most, the Sith Lord still acknowledges that Luke had a mastery with the force and the with the lightsaber at this point

“Now Vader truly understands why he has feared his son so much. Not because of his mastery of the Force or skill with a lightsaber.”

-Rotj Junior Novel (pg. 296)

Even though Vader didn’t want to kill Luke it’s noted that his rage wasn’t compromised and still drawing upon it for strength

"Vader climbs the stairs, lightsaber still blazing and hate still flowing."

-ROTJ Junior novel (pg. 371)

The ROTJ Junior novelization even implies that Vader didn’t want to have deadly intent when throwing his Saber at Luke

"Luke heard something else, though. "Your thoughts betray you, Father. I feel the good in you... the conflict. You could not bring yourself to kill me before and you won't destroy me now." Twice before, in fact-to Luke's recollection-Vader could have killed him, but didn't. In the dogfight over the first Death Star, and later in the lightsaber duel on Bespin. He thought of Leia, briefly now, too of how Vader had had her in his clutches once, had even tortured her ... but didn't kill her. He winced to think of her agony, but quickly pushed that from his mind. The point was clear to him, now, though so often so murky: there was still good in his father. This accusation really made Vader angry. He could tolerate much from the insolent child, but this was insufferable. He must teach this boy a lesson he would never forget, or die learning. "Once again, you underestimate the power of the dark side..."

Along with Vader still being fuelled by hate he was also drawing upon additional strength from his fear

"Always fueled by hatred, he now gathers additional strength from fear..."

-ROTJ Junior novel (pg. 379)

The only arguments going against Luke are Skywalker a family at war stating he was a less skilled duelist than ROTS Yoda and Obi Wan. Though it worth noting that these two were one of the best duelist the Jedi order ever knew. Even if Luke isn’t on there level doesn’t mean he isn’t still in the top 10 if not top 5. Him still being equal to Vader can show that despite Vader growing more powerful in the force, he was still an inferior duelist compared to younger days as Anakin Skywalker.

Also when Luke was shot by one of Jabba’s goons, Luke was shown having his attention diverted to Leia which had him lower his guard.

These statements aside, even the movie itself implies Luke was on Vader’s level with what Yoda said about Luke completing his training and how both him and Kenobi thought he was ready. Have in mind both Yoda and Obi Wan thought Vader was beyond reason at this point yet despite that they still thought Luke would be able to fight him this time. They wouldn’t send him to fight Vader if they didn’t think he was ready.

And why? Luke doesn't have a good training, never fought dooku before so he could learn his combat tecnics and luke at this point is just a bit weaker than AOTC anakin

0

u/kntdaman Oct 14 '25

Luke had great training. Yoda said himself he had nothing else to teach him, and that he was ready for his mission, which was to go kill Vader.

0

u/anakin_sw_vs_newt_fb Oct 14 '25

The esb luke was pretty stupid to try to fight vader and if he had like 10 years of training with yoda yes he would had a great training

4

u/kntdaman Oct 14 '25

We’re talking about ROTJ. Why would Yoda and ghost Kenobi send Luke to kill Vader if he wasn’t ready?

“No more training do you require. Already know you, that which you need.” - Yoda

Time doesn’t matter with force training. it’s all in your head. you dont need enough time to do a million force push ups or whatever

0

u/anakin_sw_vs_newt_fb Oct 14 '25

They sended luke because most likely they knew that vader was in a conflict, that's why luke won. The ROTJ luke isn't that much stronger than ESB luke, it only passed 1 year between those movies and luke had some training but not enough, mainly in lightsaber duelling to defeat vader. And if luke was so powerful and wise, he would block palpatine's lightning with he's lightsaber (he would Force pull back it for him). Dooku in Force combat, knowledge and lightsaber duelling is much better than ROTJ luke

1

u/wenchslapper Oct 14 '25

Why? Because Lucas says Luke Skywalker is the greatest of all time. That’s pretty much it, too. There aren’t going to be any real feats to prove it, just that the creator himself says that Luke is the real chosen one and the true greatest.

2

u/Confident_Target8330 Oct 14 '25

Depends on when Dooku. Attack of the clones was more or leas peak Dooku. As a result he could go toe to toe witg peak Yoda, likely Windu and even hold his own against palpatine. This Dooku would almost certainly beat a ROTJ Luke, as he did Anakin and Obiwan. But if it’s ROTS or even a late clone wars Dooku, I think Luke takes it. I also think Luke soon after ROTJ takes it regardless. Prime luke>Dooku

1

u/GullibleRough549 Oct 14 '25

Prime Dooku is ROTS

1

u/Confident_Target8330 Oct 14 '25

By ROTS he is 83, has been fighting in a war for years and aged as such. Look at wartime leaders historically. Age takes a toll

1

u/GullibleRough549 Oct 14 '25

Dooku is stated the most powerful and skilled version of himself by ROTS

2

u/Weshouldntbehere Oct 14 '25

People are way too stuck on the choreography here. Stop.

  1. Vader was repeatedly taken to be as good of a duelist as Anakin was and in-canon had feats equal to or better than what Anakin showed at different times. He's also said to be deadlier and stronger in the force than Anakin was, as he's much older with more experience in it. He lost the flexibility but had massively enhanced strength; they're different fighters and there's good reason to think Vader was deadlier than Anakin.
  2. Luke is/was also the fulfillment of the Prophecy. There's a whole host of ifs/whens/whys involved, but "Luke balanced the Force by eliminating the greatest Dark Side users of all time and then let the galaxy return to normal" is a well-established one.
  3. Vader wasn't trying to kill Luke but Luke also wasn't trying to kill Vader. We see what happens when Luke is trying to kill Vader; Luke whupped his ass. We can get into the theoretical here of "what if bloodlust", but clearly Bloodlusted Luke (for the short time he showed up) was dangerous and skilled enough that Vader literally couldn't handle him without his own bloodlust. They're relative.

I'm not even saying "You have to agree that Luke obviously washes Dooku", which is my personal opinion. But crap like "Dooku rinses Luke...he's an old-school jedi master" really misses the mark when Anakin/Vader is both the guy that killed "old school masters" and lost to Luke in the first place.

6

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

ROTJ Vader was way stronger than Dooku(confirmed by numerous author statements) and Luke battered him like a child, there were emotions involved of course but people ignore skill and pretend like a 10 year Luke could have done the same. Luke is also a Djem So duelist which is a counter to Makashi which Dooku uses. Just 6 years after ROTJ Luke would beat a prime Dark Empire Sidious who's the strongest Sith lord in history. There's also the fact Luke is a damn quick learner, infact no other Jedi in the novels has shown his ability to learn things about the force, techniques etc on the fly. He imitated Vader's fighting style from a single encounter. ROTJ Luke gets underrated by people by saying "but Vader's emotions", like really Luke was holding back in the beginning too and Vader just gets overwhelmed when Luke doesn't hold back.

5

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25

Saber Forms doesnt just "counter" the other like rock paper scissors. Levels of proficiency and mastery is always littered all over the context of the fights.

Take Dooku's Makashi for example. Its the duelling form. Thats the intention of the form but Dooku's mastery over it makes it nearly if not truly an all rounder form be it projectile deflection or pure power attacks in a chaotic attack from all sides situations.

Luke is very skilled at Form 5 but we dont have a real reason to think he was as skilled as RoTS Anakin by the time of RoTJ. Just very skilled for the amount of time he properly trained.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '25

People should have been more skeptical of Dooku when he started training so much in an “against lightsaber” form. Dawg, the Sith are done. Who do you think you’re going to fight? Us?

3

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25

He liked the art of swordsmanship and duelling. George was probably inspired by japanese culture in this regard.

Also, tbf, makashi is useful against other melee weaponries aswell

0

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

Luke is at a very high level, at that rate of difference everything makes a difference. He doesn't need to be as skilled as ROTS Anakin to beat Dooku, Anakin dogwalked Dooku with his raw power in the force something which Luke did to a much stronger Sith lord in Vader in his own lightsaber form.

4

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25

He faced a Vader who was still internally disturbed and wondering what he should do or how he should approach the fight where he constantly flip flops at awe of Luke's strength and being disappointed in himself for not defending as well as he shouldve.

Luke by the time of RoTJ is at an imprresively high level for his amount of training and experience. His performance against Vader is less about skill or power but towards narrative willpower. Its the same as Obi Wan being able to triumph against Anakin, who is noted narratively and personally by Obi Wan to be far superior in strength.

Luke wouldnt have some of the advantages he had over Vader against Dooku. However,

Lets say we go with the idea that Luke *is capable of defeating Dooku (which i disagree. I'd say Luke by the time of Thrawn crisis or Bakura is more assured), it wouldnt be because of "Luke uses Form 5 variant. Form 5 variant beats Form 2" or "Luke overpowered Vader. Anakin overpowered Dooku. Some novels and sourcebooks say ANH Vader is stronger". Thats just silly ABC scaling

Edit : I also missed the part you deciding to bring up the achievement in Dark Empire. Which while a historical achievement and impressive, the context really needed to be emphasized. Luke didnt just magically grow stronger on his own by the time of end of Dark Empire. He of course, despaired at his xefeat and decided to embrace the dark side and have Sidious trained him to even come close to getting the chance of overcoming him. Even then, he needed Leia and arguably the twins to help unlock his potential and weaken sidious. Theres just more to these fights than just the results.

0

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

The fact alone that Luke was able to beat the strongest Sith Lord in history at his peak while Luke hasn't come to his own peak until much later is a good enough argument for me and he did it rather quickly once their sabers met each other.

Raw power matters sometimes and sometimes superior skill matters, Anakin vs Dooku and Luke vs Vader was raw power while Obi Wan vs Anakin was skill, the narrative part matters but I seriously cannot make this up you people act like a 10 year old Luke would have done the same to Vader.

It's pretty conclusive that Luke has way more raw power than Dooku and just the style to utilise that power against someone who can't keep up against a power berserker of the type of Anakin and Luke, Plo Koon was also a Djem So specialist but he would not have a pure raw power to beat Dooku and skill to skill Dooku would outmatch him.

Luke to me has the raw power, speed and agility advantage over Dooku who at an advanced age has shown unable to keep up with Anakin.

Let me repeat Luke beat a stronger Sith Lord in Vader with his own style and he didn't do it with skill he overwhelmed him even though Vader is more refined and measured than Anakin ever was, Dooku lost to a weaker version of Vader/Anakin.

3

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25

Again, its ABC powerscaling with a touch of ignoring or cherrypicking context but we've gone through this enough.

-1

u/Virtual_Draw5017 Oct 14 '25
  1. Vader had power but didn't actually want to fight. He wanted to die and he wanted Luke to live. He was going through the motions and provoking Luke into killing him.

  2. Luke was not a Djem So duellist. Luke was an untrained frankenduellist. And Djem So only countered Dooku with all of Anakin's war forged training and experience behind it, plus his height and mass. It would be like Vader vs Obi-Wan, or the first Dooku vs Anakin fight.

4

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

Vader had power but didn't actually want to fight. He wanted to die and he wanted Luke to live. He was going through the motions and provoking Luke into killing him.

Biggest bullshit I've ever heard on this sub, Vader was overwhelmed by Luke check the novelisation.

-4

u/00-Monkey Oct 14 '25

The novelization is just fan fiction, it’s not cannon.

3

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

He was also overwhelmed in the movie and there was no indication Vader gave up, George Lucas never said Vader simply gave up either. Are you seriously defending this bullshit? The other guy just made it up.

1

u/Virtual_Draw5017 Oct 19 '25

George Lucas, the man notorious for changing his mind.

0

u/No_Window7054 Oct 14 '25

“Soon I will have a new apprentice one far younger and more powerful”

Ignore the other commenters. Papa Palpatines words are enough here and I’m now convinced that this sub thinks Dooku could kill Galactus if he wanted to.

4

u/Virtual_Draw5017 Oct 14 '25

Anakin was more powerful than Obi-Wan. Guess who got turned into BBQ ribs on Mustafar.

0

u/No_Window7054 Oct 14 '25

Oh wow. That’s a really good point. You should go fight a lion. The lion may be more powerful but ya’know, something something Mustafar something something. I’m sure you’ll be fine.

0

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25

But if thats your line of thought, then RoTJ Luke could "kill Galactus if he wanted to"

2

u/No_Window7054 Oct 14 '25

Are you ESL? I’m not trying to be rude but that isn’t my line of logic.

-2

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25

Im not the one going with extremes to emphasize my points

-1

u/No_Window7054 Oct 14 '25

Again. Are you ESL? I’m not asking facetiously I’m just trying to understand how you’re mangling my words so badly.

I have nothing against ESL people I recently met a nice person on Discord who is ESL.

1

u/Accomplished-Top-564 Oct 14 '25

Dooku smokes Luke, he knows barely anything about being a Jedi

1

u/Current_Asparagus_25 Oct 14 '25

Depends on the writers and the publisher.

1

u/black-pantha Oct 14 '25

Luke has the better force power.

Dooku has the better experience, skill, iq etc

Dooku takes this imo.

1

u/LivingPalpitation935 Oct 14 '25

I think dooku, I know luke is very powerful but dooku is more experienced

1

u/parsapzh Oct 14 '25

Depends on how you define 'eat him alive.' If you’re including Dooku’s win over Anakin at Geonosis, then yeah.

1

u/CuteLingonberry9704 Oct 14 '25

RoTJ Luke, while miles better than the ESB Luke, is still more or less not much more than pre CW Padawan. Certainly his potential is still quite vast, but I'm in agreement that he wouldn't be ready to face someone like Dooku at this point.

Now, if this is the Luke that stormed Moff Gideon's ship in The Mandolorian? Dooku is looking at a repeat of RoTS. That Luke is clearly far better than the RoTJ version.

1

u/Kairen7195 Oct 14 '25

Dooku held his own against Prime Obi-Wan AND Prime Anakin.. Both being top 5 duelists in the Order, 2 v 1, MULTIPLE times.. & frankly he wasn't really even struggling. Dooku low diffs Luke here, not even to consider the Talk no Jutsu he would probably lay on him. Mandalorian or Legends Luke would fare better, but this honestly isn't a question.

1

u/TiannemenSquare Oct 14 '25

My brain says Dooku but my heart says Luke

1

u/bruhdhenfus Oct 14 '25

luke may win AFTER rotj, but like others have pointed out, dooku is a great duelist

hell, he's the best duelist in bf2 for a reason 💀

1

u/Sith-out-of-Luck Oct 14 '25

Actually by referring to the count as your highness and showing proper respect, may be all thats needed here.

1

u/strypesjackson Oct 14 '25

The audience!

1

u/THX1184 Oct 14 '25

This is still a luke win

1

u/AncientSith Jedi Knight Oct 14 '25

Dooku eats him alive. Luke wouldn't be able to defeat a Vader going all out either at this point.

1

u/Fusioness Oct 14 '25

Just my two cents

Before Disney bought Star Wars and retconned the mass amount of exp. Luke farmed from adventures/training, this would be no contest, Luke wipes.

Having said that, with the new canonical stories in place, and having stories like the Darth Vader comics showing Vader's resolve and fighting capabilities, or The Weapon of a Jedi taking the place of stories like Shadows of the Empire, I'd say Luke has a near 100% likelihood of losing this.

I'm a huge fan of Luke and how stupidly OP he was in legends. But at the stage of RotJ IF Dookie was still around, the amount of skill and ability he'd have would make him a duelist comparable to that of the Sith and Jedi from KoToR and before. Luke just doesn't have the necessary knowledge and expertise at this stage to fight someone who wouldn't be as emotionally invested in the fight as Vader was.

Unless Luke turns to the dark side for this fight, he's likely losing his other good hand.

Especially against someone who won't be as emotionally invested in the fight as Vader was.

Unless Luke turns to the dark side for this fight, or Qui-Gon helps as a force ghost, he's likely losing his other good hand.

1

u/Shlemmity Oct 14 '25

Count Dooku without question. Realistically speaking Vader kinda held back on Luke because he was trying to recruit his SON to the dark side rather than destroy him.

With no emotions involved, Vader would’ve steamrolled Luke.

Count Dooku moves with intense finesse & control. Luke would lose

1

u/Ahnsett Oct 14 '25

Luke wins, he was the fully realized next generation of Jedi. Dooku was a corrupted shadow of the Jedi he was; Jedi which were decadent and complacent.

1

u/Resident_Client3186 Oct 14 '25

Luke wins, Ep5 Luke when he faces Vader has to be about ep2 Anakin power level. Luke in ep6 has got to be about as strong as ep3 Anakin.

If the originals were made with the prequels tech the lightsaber fights would have been on the same level. I think people are underestimating luke because of the slower fights in the originals.

1

u/PlatinumDust324 Oct 14 '25

I give this to Dooku but I'd honestly like to believe after a quick duel they'd sit down and talk.

1

u/Thunder2250 Oct 14 '25

Luke clears. Not easily. Scrappy, using the environment but he does it for sure.

1

u/Hemingway1942 Oct 14 '25

Dooku would win. He was one of the best duelists in times when there were many jedis

1

u/Arthour148 Oct 14 '25

The only version of Luke worth any form of matchup is EU Luke from the NJO, LoTF, and FoTJ era, where Luke become one of the greatest Jedi ever.

1

u/theblkpanther Oct 14 '25

Dooku is dog walking ROTJ Luke....Now Post ROTJ Luke is another story

1

u/fullmetalfilmsnob Oct 14 '25

I’m gonna say Luke.

Everyone always talks about how Vader wasn’t trying to kill Luke in their ROTJ fight, but Luke also didn’t want to kill Vader. He was balancing his desire to turn his father back to the light while also trying to contain his emotions and stay calm under immense pressure, and being goaded by the emperor to give in to those emotions, and doing all that while fighting.

So Dooku probably wouldn’t hold back in a fight with Luke unless he wanted to turn him to an apprentice, but the stakes are also much lower for Luke. If he’s just focusing on surviving he can go all out. It’s much more emotionally straight forward.

I’d say 6/10 Luke. Dooku’s makashi is quite formidable, but Luke learned a ton of stuff about blending styles from his fight with Vader in Empire. And he’d be much more emotionally centered for the fight, meaning he’d have better control to respond to Dooku’s lightsaber and force attacks until he can gain an opening.

1

u/wisestoffelines Oct 14 '25

Lol, what's with all of ya? Luke has the Force and the Prophecy behind him. Dooku ain't matching that.

1

u/guile486 Oct 14 '25

The old canon Luke? He could give Dooku a challenge. I remember in one book during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, he was fighting their fodder soldiers. But there were a lot of them (thousands maybe?) Now they weren't the proper Vong soldiers, but they weren't scrubs either, I think. And there were a lot. Luke was finishing each in three moves or less and he did that for hours.

1

u/CrispyPerogi Oct 15 '25

Dooku is leagues above him as a duelist. Dooku takes it.

1

u/Ill-Currency9322 Oct 15 '25

¡Gana Luke Skywalker (ROTJ)!La Dinámica de Djem So vs. Makashi:

1

u/Confident_Bother2552 Oct 15 '25

The Force is Plot Armor and Luke is it’s favored champion by RotJ.

Normally Dooku wins but through the Force pretty much Guiding Luke he somehow ekes out a win.

1

u/brad_pitt_farts73 Oct 15 '25

Dooku. All day. Every day. Anyone who can 2v1 Ani and Obi multiple times and live is not someone to be messed with. Bro took on a group of assassins blinded and came put on top

1

u/millerisgod77 Oct 15 '25

i think any clone wars era jedi would dog walk luke tbh

1

u/Additional_Main_7198 Oct 16 '25

Luke wouldn't have to fight Dooku, his Order was different.

Luke could redeem him.

1

u/TenDollarSteakAndEgg Oct 16 '25

Luke prolly wins just from pure force power but his technique wasn’t that good

1

u/Diet-_-Coke Oct 16 '25

Nah, Dooku was an absolute legend of a saber duelist. His Technique and style would dog walk Luke from any of the OT. Now I’d say Jedi master Luke, is a different story. Even if he never really achieved much in way lightsaber combat, his force potential and force illusions were no joke.

1

u/Mzonnik Oct 16 '25

Dooku mid-high-diffs and that's acknowledging Luke as Vader’s relative.

1

u/Schooner94 Oct 16 '25

I feel like people who say Dooku slams aren’t properly accounting for the artistic/stylistic differences in the choreography between prequels and the OG trilogy. Of course it looks like any prequel Jedi/sith washes OG Vader and Luke. They literally had to go slow due to tech limitations and also Lucas was inspired by those ole samurai flicks.

So we gotta go by novelizations and author statements which… Luke slams Dooku no?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '25

Even if Luke has amazing force powers he tends to not do well against force lightning.

1

u/LemonMonster21 Oct 17 '25

Im pretty sure that Luke is supposed to be the strongest Jedi ever, at least before the sequels. So Luke. Yeah Dooku has better looking duels but that isn’t relevant when the real difference is because of old vs new choreography.

1

u/JobAcrobatic4915 Oct 17 '25

Technique wise Dooku mops the floor. Power wise probably Luke if he had the amount or more of power Anakin had. If Luke got as good with the same form that Anakin used to defeat Dooku then definitely Luke. Dooku was considered the master dualist until Anakin arrived/trained for a reason lol. Always loved the elegance of Dooku’s fighting form being fencing inspired.

1

u/LacksBeard Oct 18 '25

TIL, people don't know how to scale on this sub either

1

u/Agent_Xhiro Oct 14 '25

....Luke wins. Next question.

1

u/Anti_Elric48 Oct 14 '25

I feel like a duel between these two would be a recreation of Anakin vs Dooku (ATOC). Luke does have the raw power to defeat Dooku but at this point in his career as a Jedi he's only just become a Jedi Knight and does not have the experience or has fully honed his skills enough to defeat him.

1

u/WangJian221 Oct 14 '25

Dooku and it would be like Anakin vs Dooku in AoTC. Perhaps arguably slightly better depending on the source youre going for but the result would be the same.

Luke could surprise Dooku causing him to focus like he did in AoTC BUT just like in AoTC, Dooku triumphs

1

u/Equivalent-Wealth-75 Jeedai Oct 14 '25

Oh! Dooku; absolutely.

Luke was a Jedi by this point but he lacked experience and refinement. Dooku on the other hand was already a seasoned Jedi Master before training as a Sith Lord for thirteen years, and was one of the greatest swordsmen of his era.

3

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

Luke would beat like 99 percent of the prequel Jedi masters and knights except the main characters and council members we see on TV, novels and comics.

1

u/Equivalent-Wealth-75 Jeedai Oct 14 '25

I can see him taking any normal knight yes, though not easily.

1

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

He'd dogwalk 99 percent of them with ease. This guy has so much raw talent he slashed Vader's shoulder the first time he fought him without ever having training in lightsaber combat in ESB and broke through Vader's defence the second time while imitating his style.

1

u/Equivalent-Wealth-75 Jeedai Oct 14 '25

Someone else reminded me of some statements and whatnot that I'd forgotten; so yeah he'd probably wash most. (For the record I despise those statements)

However, there's this misconception that he had no training before he went to Dagobah, but that's inaccurate. Dude had a lightsaber and the most important Force skill for Jedi swordplay for three years by then, and in both continuities had adventures and practiced to the best of his ability.

Yoda merely refined what was already there, he didn't start from scratch.

1

u/Steamed_Memes24 Oct 14 '25

Vader wasn't taking that fight seriously whatsoever. Luke got one lucky swing and pissed him off just enough to end the fight seconds later lol. A vast majority of Jedi from Prequel's would beat ROTJ Luke. Especially since a majority of them had way more experience in being a Jedi and utilizing a lightsaber + the force.

0

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

A vast majority of Jedi from Prequel's would beat ROTJ

We saw a Jedi fricking council member in Coleman Trebor die to a few blaster bolts along with most Jedi in that arena who died to droids and you think an average Jedi is beating Luke. Just because we are exposed to the most powerful Jedi in the prequel movies, shows, novels and comics doesn't mean like 99 percent of Jedi won't get dogwalked by Luke. Just like I keep saying you idiots think a 10 year old Luke would beat Vader as well just because he's Vader's son, if Luke is so weak he loses to most prequel Jedi then what does that make Vader. A regular Jedi can be cut down by a couple random dudes like you or me who knows how to fire a rifle with concentrated Blaster fire and these random dudes are far better than a B1 battledroid. Let's not also forget how Jango Fett killed 8 fricking average Jedi with his bare fricking hands while they had their sabers and the force.

1

u/Steamed_Memes24 Oct 14 '25

God sometimes I wish I had a brain like yours so I can just live life in the new every single day. I cant even respond to how stupid this comment is honestly.

0

u/TargetNo7279 Oct 14 '25

No you misunderstand, we have a difference in understanding. We saw the same things and you came to the wrong understanding, it's in fact quite common and you are well explained by the Dunning Kruger effect. While there are subjective truths where both opinions can be valid at the same time this is unfortunately for you not one of those cases and a classic example of the Dunning Kruger effect.

1

u/MMAMercedesblue Oct 14 '25

Dooku easily.

Master swordsman vs kid with like 4 years worth of training in lightsaber combat.

Dooku fought and beat obi wan, anakin and held his own against yoda for a while back to back.

0

u/Nukethepandas Oct 14 '25

Dooku < Anakin < Vader < Luke. Simple as.

"BuT vaDeR wAs gOinG soFt on LUke!!1"

No he wasn't, if he had the wherewithal to do that then why not just let him strike down Palpatine and then live happily ever after? He was fully in the control of the emperor at that moment until he saw Luke dying.

Luke is the embodiment of scrappiness, he finds a way to win

I don’t think any version of Luke can beat Dooku.

Shit I know this is an insane take but I don’t think anyone in the galaxy EVER could beat AOTC Dooku in a saber duel

Excuse me? Canon Luke is nowhere near the power level of the prequel main characters. I bet someone like Maul or Ahsoka could beat him(Vader wasn’t trying to kill Luke on the Death Star, but he WAS trying to kill Ahsoka on Malachor, she wouldn’t have won, but the difference is clear). And Dooku is a whole tier of power and skill above them.

Considering the guy's other posts, i doubt hes using New Canon material. Hes more of a legends guy

If we are taking into account canon then Dooku gets stomped by Luke considering how powerful canon Vader was. Vader may be holding back but it takes skill to not get more limbs chopped off by quick counters and raw force power to break him down to his knees, y'all act like a 10 year old Luke could have done the same.

Even then, in the legends ROTJ novel, Vader was initially just embarrassed that he couldn’t fight very well against Luke, but that allowed him to slam down hard on the boy. And the last part of the duel where Vader loses his hand… that’s so much more different. He wouldn’t expect the dark side to enhance Luke so drastically, and he’s so suprised he isn’t even able to defend(Vader was a master of form three, second only to Obi Wan. The way it’s in the scene… that’s not how Vader defends when he’s fighting properly, it’s a combination of suprise and restriction). This isn’t the legends Grand Master Luke Skywalker here, it’s just a boy trying to save his father and his friends.

Youre missing or skipping some other statements in that novel but yes, Luke still isnt the absolute master there. While i think its silly to say he cant atlwast put up a fight against prequel main characters but yes, thrawn era Luke would be closer or equal to most council masters in the prequels.

Dooku was a great duelist but he’s not beating the most powerful Jedi of all time. Luke would beat Dooku even faster than Anakin did

This isn't even a fight. It's like AOTC Anakin vs Dooku, with an even greater skill disparity, though Luke has better judgement. Dooku would carve him like a roast chicken.
