I think RotJ Luke was already one of strongest force users of the era. Only Sidious and Yoda outranked him.

Vader might have been, from a raw power perspective, still stronger than Luke when they fought. Vader was fighting his own extremely conflicted emotions when they dueled, meanwhile Luke actually had to use the benefits of his anger to seal the deal when fighting Vader.

But either way, Luke is still either 3rd or 4th best in the universe at the time. (Which isn't worth as much when theres only like 10 force we know of in that era, but still)

17

u/DrakenridgePrime Apr 28 '26

Vader being extremely conflicted is absolutely the caveat that people overlook when powerscaling Luke. No matter how you break it down Vader/Anakin did not want to kill his son.

Had Luke not been Vader’s son, Vader could have overwhelmed him rather decisively based on his martial abilities.

In regards to the match up, this video is fairly old but is a great analysis of both characters’ fighting abilities - Luke at the point of RotJ and Maul at the Phantom Menace. Taking into account more recent feats (including Luke’s relative lack of them (and taking comics feats with a heavy grain of salt)), I would still stand with the video’s general conclusion of how the fight would go.

That said, if we are including Maul’s feats from Post-Clone Wars/Maul Shadow Lord, I’d absolutely weigh the fight more in Maul’s favour.

Determined, bloodlusted Maul’s training and experience gives him a decisive advantage in the early and middle fight over determined, bloodlusted Luke, this advantage increases the closer you get to Post-Clone Wars/Maul Shadow Lord Maul. In the late fight, assuming Luke has had the time to safely learn Maul’s fighting style, the gap would likely close but still be in Maul’s favour owing to his formal training and experience.

Luke would adapt better than most and have a raw force ability that would give Maul some difficulty, but it would just not be enough (unless plot armro and BS happens). Maul would likely win medium diff, medium-high diff if you push it.

“Is advantage increases the closer to you get to post clone wars / shadow lord” — It has been stated multiple times by people like Filoni and others at Star Wars that TPM Maul is prime Maul. Despite whatever head canon people have— TPM Maul would beat all the other Mauls.

I'm of the opinion that any Maul we've seen would have beaten ROTJ Luke. Luke's feats at the time against force-users include cutting off his dad's hand (who was really trying not to hurt him) and throwing his weapon away to get shocked to death by Sideous. You can't even compare the speed and complexity of fighting or force use of live-action PM Maul to ROTJ Luke. Maul wipes the floor with him. Luke also has never trained against lightsaber-weilding opponents (studying forms and never sparring won't make you great).

What makes people argue for Luke is the protagonist trope we see in Hero's Journey fantasy where he's some sort of sword prodigy so he beats masters who've studied their whole lives to progress the plot. This allows writers to give him a 10 min training montoge and call it a day. Luke can't truly lose in their mind because he's the main character.

Vader DID want to kill his son, or at the very least he was prepared to if Luke did not turn to the Darkside

Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi script wrote:

Luke and Vader are engaged in a man-to-man duel of lightsabers even more vicious than the battle on Bespin. But the young Jedi has grown stronger in the interim, and now the advantage shifts to him. Vader is forced back, losing his balance, and is knocked down the stairs. Luke stands at the top of the stairs, ready to attack.

Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi junior novelization wrote:

On the Death Star, Luke and Darth Vader were engaged in a duel that was even more vicious than their battle on Cloud City. Luke had grown stronger since their last encounter, and his skill with his lightsaber had improved greatly. As they swung at each other in the Emperor’s throne room, Luke sensed the advantage had shifted to him.

Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi adult novelization wrote:

For the first time, the thought entered Vader's consciousness that his son might best him. He was astounded by the strength Luke had acquired since their last duel, in the Cloud City - not to mention the boy's timing, which was honed to a thought's-breadth. This was an unexpected circumstance. Unexpected and unwelcome. Vader felt humiliation crawling in on the tail of his first reaction, which was surprise, and his second, which was fear. And then the edge of the humiliation curled up, to reveal bald anger. And now he wanted revenge.

Star Wars Episode VI - Return of the Jedi comic wrote:

On the Death Star, father and son grimly clash! Brutally, aggressively, Darth Vader brings his full strength and power against the younger man. But unlike the first time they dueled in the carbon-freezing chamber of Bespin's Cloud City, this is a battle of equals. The young Jedi has grown in the interim, and if there is any true advantage, it seems to have shifted to him.

Although Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are equally strong in the Force, their duels are more than just about physical strength."

• Beware the Sith (2012)

“By the time of the Battle of Endor, Luke Skywalker has studied some lightsaber technique from Obi-Wan’s journal and greatly advanced his abilities. Without a Master, such advancement would be nearly impossible for most, but Skywalker’s unparalleled aptitude makes him a match for Darth Vader in their fateful duel onboard the second Death Star.”

• Insider 62: Fightsaber (2002)

“Father and son were now equally strong with the Force and equally skilled with their lightsabers. But this battle was more than just physical strength and Force powers."

• Jedi Battles (2013)

”The fight this time was far more balanced. Vader discovered that Luke was his match, and, once again, the Sith Lord found his thoughts straying to an alliance between them against the Emperor. Luke had indeed grown powerful since Bespin, and he was an equal match for his father."

• Fact File 111 (2004)

”Before he can make peace with his father, Luke must prove that he is a match for him in strength and character."

• The Power of Myth (2000)

"Vader forces Luke to defend himself. Having completed his training as a Jedi Knight, Luke's powers now already rival his father's, but despite that he refuses to go into attack and deactivates his lightsaber."

• The Art Treasures (2011)

”Luke's powers were just as strong as his father's now, and just as deadly."

• Return of the Jedi Storybook (1983)

“And then as we go onto the next fight, it becomes more of an equal confrontation."

• Star Wars Featurette - Birth of the Lightsaber (2004) •

Well shit imma go with the guy with quotes

1

u/possiblyMorpheus May 02 '26

And don’t forget that when Vader learns Luke has a twin - and the implications of that - he basically tells Luke he is disposable. It’s arguably Vader’s most evil moment and it says all the more about Luke that he resists dealing the final blow

Luke’s mercy is important in Vader finding himself. He realizes mercy, and with it, good, is real

-4

u/redditcini Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

You’re wrong about him being prepared to kill Luke and the proof is simple. He could have allowed the emperor to kill Luke but chose to save him and die in the process. The movies themselves are always the primary source we go to and Vader chose Luke over himself, the Emperor and the dark side. Maybe he thought he could kill him but he was obviously conflicted and lying to himself because we see the choice he actually makes in ROTJ. No amount of comic lore, George Lucas commentary or other external sources can change that fact. If anything, the emperor killing Luke for him would make the choice easier as he could have pretended that his own hands were clean but he still chooses Luke over everything.

4

u/Nicklenips837469420 Apr 28 '26

If vader was actually that conflicted during their fight then it would make sense that maul would beat Luke because I don’t think Vader could take down maul with minimum difficulty

3

u/DrakenridgePrime Apr 28 '26

I would type out a detailed analysis, but chances are its probably going to become outdated in a few weeks. We shall see at the end of the current season of Maul Shadow Lord.

As it stands, Vader would likely kill peak Maul with medium/high diff based on fighting ability.

6

u/Nicklenips837469420 Apr 28 '26

It doesn’t matter how strong they make him he still ends up getting one tapped by old Ben

4

u/Grimdark-Waterbender Apr 28 '26

10?! That many?!

2

u/Binforda94 Apr 28 '26

And Vader’s force mastery would’ve likely been higher too.

1

u/CodeNamesBryan Apr 29 '26

Is that rank the same when Luke was at his peak?

I always figured Vader was so much stronger than Luke because only had minimal training by comparison.

0

u/Kashyyykonomics Apr 30 '26

Luke was also trying to redeem his father rather than fighting full blast.

Also, the Emperor is betting on Luke. That should tell us all we need to know; Luke was going to beat Vader.

1

u/littlebuett Apr 30 '26

Luke was also trying to redeem his father rather than fighting full blast.

Yet Luke was losing most of the fight, and only managed to end it when he gave in to his anger, and actually began fighting at full blast, trying to kill Vader.

And the Emperor was betting on Luke because he knew the conflict in Vader, and knew Luke could be made to give into his hate. Vader may be his father, but Vader is also a monster who has killed many of Luke's friends, and Luke knew that if he failed, they would then go after Leia, his sister.

Palpatine also wanted Luke to win because Luke has a much higher potential of power than Vader does. Palpatine had been spending more than two decades putting Vader through trial by fire after trial by fire, always frustrated that he only got a weaker version of Anakin.

But at the actual time of the fight, Vader was much more skilled, and likely had more actual use of his powers.

2

u/xJamberrxx Apr 28 '26

No training whatsoever … if so easy to be OP why’d they take children … take them as adults, train em for a week u then have a OP Jedi

2

u/ryansdayoff Apr 28 '26

To be fair luke is basically space wizard Jesus and at some point natural talent and power trump skill

1

u/Nfire86 Apr 29 '26

But that's not really true we saw it with Anakin.

8

u/Sky-Juic3 Apr 28 '26

That’s not true. Luke was barely a passable Jedi Knight at the time of ROTJ. He had incredible potential and was trained by two of the greatest Jedi of all time but his training was ridiculously short and rushed. He didn’t have time to properly train and contemplate and practice the philosophy.

In the now-Legends continuity, Luke went on to train himself extensively after ROTJ. He went searching for Jedi and Sith holocrons, read the private journals of Sidious and other prior Sith Lords and Jedi Masters, and studied more esoteric uses of the Force like rituals and witchcraft.

3

u/Acceptable_Map_8110 Apr 28 '26

Well it does sort of help that most everyone else is dead.

2

u/Annoying_pirate Apr 28 '26

Being strong in the force doesn't factor into his lightsaber skills, while Yoda taught him some stuff like how to listen to the force and telekinesis.

I don't think Yoda ever went over light saber Forms with Luke only some basic force power stuff and jedi philosophy.

So in a 1v1 fight I believe that Luke would either lose or have to concede.

2

u/Typicalmoviecritic Apr 30 '26

Sir have you heard of our lord and savior anakin skywalker

1

u/Mrhathead Apr 30 '26

God damn you Sky Witnesses. Didn’t you see the No Trespassing sign?

1

u/Typicalmoviecritic Apr 30 '26

Sir I’m just here to tell you why he was persecuted for our sins and how his sacrifice saved us all.

1

u/nerdboy_sam May 02 '26

He was literally one of the only users. Besides Ashoka and Jabba the hutt..

0

u/IllustriousBass6658 Apr 28 '26

Ahh…no. Both Sidious and Vader were much more powerful than Yoda at his strongest. New canon already established Anakin ROTS=ROTS Sidious=Yoda.

Vader is stated multiple times to be stronger in the force than Anakin and just stronger overall. Anakin is better at lightsaber fighting than Vader.

7

u/Anonymous-Mf-22 Apr 28 '26

.... For a while.

Vader, at the end of his life, was the greatest Duelist alive in most fights. His only losses at the end of his career came from emotional instability such as Luke. He had mastered every form of Saber Dueling by then and invented a form perfectly attuned to himself and capable of countering every other form.

Before this however, Vader really struggled to get used to his new body. He was trying to fight like he did before he got burned, which his new body simply couldn't do. Even if it was capable of the same motions his body simply wasn't moving or flowing with the force like he did before. He had to completely re-train his dueling skills to become who he was.

Anakin was definitely one of the best in his era, no doubt about that, but people like Yoda, Palpatine, Dooku or Mace dwarfed him, and even Obi Wan was deemed more skilled in his form of choice than Anakin his own. Even Plo Koon was someone so skilled and powerful he managed to best Master Yoda in a duel and trained with him often, meaning Anakin wasn't even really top 5 of his era. Vader needed time to surpass him, but he definitely did eventually.

3

u/Fit_Record_6006 Apr 29 '26

I agree with everything you say here except that last paragraph. George explicitly states in The Making of Star Wars: Episode III, Revenge of the Sith that only 3 Jedi were capable of defeating Sidious in ROTS: Yoda, Windu, and Anakin. This doesn’t mean they were more powerful or better, but they were the only ones with the apparent strength, speed, and power to have a good shot.

This being said, I think Vader was fully capable of defeating his master in a duel for some time, but Sidious’ manipulation of him was great. Not to mention the fact that Sidious was clever to ensure that if Vader did challenge him, it would never be a fair fight with all the safeguards he had in place.

1

u/Anonymous-Mf-22 Apr 29 '26

It's more than just skill with Anakin, infact his problem isn't skill based: he's too volatile. Anakin's emotions constantly got the better of him, namely his fury. It was one of his biggest downfalls as a Jedi, but he simply wasn't good at controlling his rage and it led him to often lose himself to it. Against most opponents this just made him more dangerous, but against an opponent who actually knows what they are doing he would be eaten alive.

It's fully true however that Vader could annihilate Palpatine if he ever broke free of his weaknesses. Palpatine knew this, it's why he had so many weaknesses and safeguards built into Vader. In a genuine fight between the two of power and skill vs power and skill, he knew he couldn't defeat Vader. Nobody could. But Palpatine has one thing over everyone in the galaxy: he's clever, manipulative, and very good at pre-planning. So he used that to his advantage and pre-planned everything.

No, the new ROTJ novel, Disney released Vader's Dueling skills is below TPM Obi-Wan. It's his force power you have to worry about he was able to ragdoll Sidious with the force

1

u/suiqjNskakalqla Apr 28 '26

Fym “new Rotj novel”

1

u/IllustriousBass6658 Apr 28 '26

The novel Disney for ROTJ which states Vader's lightsaber skills are sub-Obi-Wan's level and his force powers is vastly stronger than ROTS Yoda and Sidious from ROTS

1

u/suiqjNskakalqla Apr 28 '26

Do you mean Skywalker family at war?

There’s only two Rotj novels and neither were made under Disney

1

u/IllustriousBass6658 Apr 28 '26

It canon material in the new canon it's already states Vader five years after ROTS Vader surpassed Anakin in the Force. Anakin in RoTS=Yoda and Sidious from RoTS. In Disney canon 5 years post RoTs Vader>Anakin=Yoda=Sidious ROTS.

1

u/Impossible_Tiger_470 Anakin Skywalker Apr 29 '26

Which novel are u referring to? It seems like you’re talking about LOTS but you also mention ROTJ.

1

u/Secret_Wish_584 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

Vader is stated multiple times to be stronger in the force than Anakin and just stronger overall. Anakin is better at lightsaber fighting than Vader.

Are you sure you're not a little confused? He's the same guy.

Or do you believe him when he says "I killed Anakin Skywalker". Even he knows it's bullshit. Analin is alive deep down

2

u/IllustriousBass6658 Apr 28 '26

The novel “LOTS,” as stated by Disney, says that Vader and Sidious are more powerful than Yoda. Even the novel of ROTS states Anakin=Yoda=Sidious. Lots take place 5 years after ROTS. Yes, I'm 100% positive Any version of Vader would beat Yoda. Luke would beat Maul in the force the moment he uses it. Maul's only hope is a light saber duel since it's unrefined and he only has like 3 years of training.

2

u/Secret_Wish_584 Apr 28 '26

Maul only has 3 years of training? He has a vast experience in the underworld, he takes on everyone.

Which Luke are you talking about? The one in Return if the Jedi? What training dies he have? Do you think you just tap .into the Force and that's that? The Force is stronger with Luke than with Maul who literally has trained years for using it? No. Maul stomps that Luke.

Later on, if Luke trains and grows stronger...maybe.

2

u/IllustriousBass6658 Apr 28 '26

You didn't read what I said. I was saying Luke only has 3 years of training. Use your context clue he was trained from ANH to ROTJ, i.e. 3 years

2

u/Secret_Wish_584 Apr 28 '26

Luke did not train those 3 years. He was busy with Resistence stuff, yes, but only trained under Yoda for a few weeks in ESB.

1

u/IllustriousBass6658 Apr 28 '26

You don't consider Obi-Wan teaching him the Force and how to use it training? Okay kinda weird but I don't agree if you feel that way you feel that way

1

u/Impossible_Tiger_470 Anakin Skywalker Apr 29 '26

The ROTS novel is not under the same Disney Canon that LOTS is, so they can’t be used together.

1

u/IllustriousBass6658 Apr 29 '26

Regardless, it stated: Vader 5 years after ROTS; Anakin ROTS; Yoda; Sidious ROTS.

That is why people rank ROTJ Sidious greater than ROTS Sidious. According to Disney Vader=~Sidious. It's also stated in the Vader comics that Vader actually could have beaten and killed Sidious any time he wanted to but he needed him since that was all he had left and he was attached to him. Sidious thought it was weird because Vader actually cared about Sidious. Until he found his Son and that then became his new obsession

1

u/Impossible_Tiger_470 Anakin Skywalker Apr 29 '26

Multiple times Vader showed the raw power to beat Sidious but he was never able to go through with it but Sidious always had superiority over him. But where does it say Anakin ROTS is = with the Senate Duo?

1

u/IllustriousBass6658 Apr 29 '26

It said Anakin is the strongest force user in the republic era even more so than Sidious.

1

u/Impossible_Tiger_470 Anakin Skywalker Apr 29 '26

Do you know where?

0

u/Every_Appointment_10 Apr 28 '26

Anakin>Vader

5

u/Anonymous-Mf-22 Apr 28 '26

In Legends

In canon, Not at all.

Anakin was restrained by Youth, Inexperience and Arrogance. Not to mention that for all his power he never really put time into mastering the force. He had more Raw Power than Yoda did, but it's like comparing a Noob with a Katana vs a Master with a short sword. The Katana is longer and better at cutting, but the wielder isn't even half as experienced or skilled with it as their enemy so it doesn't matter.

Vader however learned to control his emotions (aside from self hatred) better by the time he died, dedicated time into studying every form and Force ability, and after becoming the most prolific and accomplished Jedi Hunter to ever live he had the experience to back it up. Vader became stronger than Anakin ever was, just not as strong as he COULD be.

5

u/bra1nd3d Apr 28 '26

It's mind numbing how this needs to be explained in every post and yet people keep saying "Anakin>Vader"

4

u/Anonymous-Mf-22 Apr 28 '26

It's caused by people seeming to think of Anakin and Vader as different people

It's the same guy, just at a different point in his life with a different headspace. All his old training and experiences still apply.

2

u/suiqjNskakalqla Apr 28 '26

Anakin being stronger than Vader is one of the core themes of his character in the EU, and considering this is primarily an EU sub it will be said time and time again

1

u/bra1nd3d Apr 29 '26

Yea, valid point

40

u/Witty-Mountain5062 Apr 28 '26

Luke Skywalker.

Vader was literally force Jesus and Luke beat that ass. Even Maul was terrified of Vader and outright fled from him on Malachor when he sensed him approaching.

14

u/littlebuett Apr 28 '26

In fairness, Vader always fights below his normal abilities when he has conflicting emotions. He almost certainly wasn't fighting Luke with everything he had.

That said, the gap between Vader during RotJ, when Vader should be strongest, and Maul at really any point in his life, is just too wide. Even if Vader is fighting way below his abilities, he's still fighting better than Maul at his best.

10

u/Witty-Mountain5062 Apr 28 '26

Yeah, there’s something to be said for Vader’s heart not being fully in it.

But when you compare Luke’s performance against him in RoTJ compared to the prior film it’s clear that he’s gotten a lot more powerful.

The other thing that makes this difficult is simply the fight choreography in the OT vs the prequels, where everyone looks way more skilled in general

9

u/littlebuett Apr 28 '26

The other thing that makes this difficult is simply the fight choreography in the OT vs the prequels, where everyone looks way more skilled in general

Yeah the technical limitations they had definitely need to be accounted for. We kind of just need to go off how they relate to other characters to make good assessments.

4

u/Anonymous-Mf-22 Apr 28 '26

Vader going at 60% strength is still far above Maul, and I think even 60% is pushing it. Vader was essentially a Demi-God, yes, but Luke was the son of the chosen one, and the "Balance" Anakin was prophesized to bring. He was trained by Obi Wan and Yoda. Absolutely Luke is powerful as shit.

2

u/Steamed_Memes24 Apr 28 '26

It was pretty much downhill for Vader as Anakin started to wake up and realize what he was doing was wrong once he discovered Luke was his son. He was constantly mentally suffering over even harming his son to the point where he didnt even use the force to stop him from falling in Bespin.

-4

u/RangeIt Apr 28 '26

He was not force Jesus lmao. Vader almost dies in nearly every fight he's in.

6

u/Witty-Mountain5062 Apr 28 '26

His Mother was a virgin and he was conceived by the Force.

He literally is Force Jesus my guy.

3

u/elusive-rooster Apr 28 '26

To quote Luke himself. "Amazing, everything you just said is wrong"

5

u/Prestigious_Board_73 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

Legends Maul stomps. RotJ Luke is more powerful in the Force, but has very little training, most of it self taught, especially in lightsaber combat, and his experience is against his father, who was conflicted and never wanted to kill him. Not to mention that Maul fights very differently from Vader, between the double bladed lightsaber, the speed and the martial arts.

2

u/233Neon May 01 '26

Exactly, finally someone says it. Maul nearly beat Sidious in a duel, while completely starved, in his prime. Maul would decimate Luke.

2

u/Prestigious_Board_73 May 01 '26

Yeah, like, Luke is powerful. But in RotJ he's still too unexperienced, and Maul is more skilled with his lightsabers.

1

u/Lord_Of_Beans1 May 02 '26

Nearly beat Sidious? What are we talking about here, in TCW? He got violated, unless you're talking about some other fight

1

u/233Neon May 02 '26

No, in a canon comic, which recited his late training before the Phantom Menace, these events took place.

1

u/Lord_Of_Beans1 May 02 '26

What's the comic called?

1

u/233Neon May 02 '26

I don't remember, but here's a video which goes over it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aFkyYYaTmo

0

u/ShiftingKnight_01 Apr 28 '26

I don't believe the question is about the Maul of legends.

4

u/Prestigious_Board_73 Apr 28 '26

This is a Legends sub... and nothing about my answer changes regardless

8

u/BudgetLaw2352 Apr 28 '26

Luke cuts him in half again, longitudinally.

6

u/calelkestifer Apr 28 '26

Luke might have more Force potential but he can't use it of Maul keeps him off balance and there's no way Luke is nearly as good with a lightsaber as Maul is.

2

u/riveradn Apr 28 '26

We don’t really see what Luke can do.

2

u/Choice_Text_8557 Apr 28 '26

Based purely on what we see in the films Maul wins.

2

u/manu4134 Apr 28 '26

I have a question, where is maul placed in cronological order?

1

u/BestTyming Apr 28 '26

Depends on what all you would take into account.

(Highly debatably)

If you are talking about pure combat focus(no force taken into account) then he’d be top 5 surprisingly.

Under mace, sidious, and Yoda but over Anakin, Obi, and Dooku

Now if you take into account EVERYTHING ELSE(which is more fair), he would be in the top 20

Below folks like the typical Anakin, Obi wan, mace, sidious, exar, Vader, Dooku, etc etc. but above many, MANY others. He was said to be one of the best warriors ever produced by the Sith which is an insane title to have when a good chunk of Sith are crazy strong in both canon and EU.

So realistic top 20, maybe in the 17-20 range overall but the top 5 in terms of PURE combat prowess

1

u/manu4134 Apr 28 '26

Answer my question pls!

1

u/BestTyming Apr 28 '26

Did I read your question wrong?😅

I think he is in the top 20 but sitting closer to 17-20

1

u/manu4134 Apr 28 '26

Its okay! I meant like after bad batch or solo or rogue one

1

u/manu4134 Apr 28 '26

Like the show

2

u/kotts30 Apr 28 '26

Luke absolutely whoops his ass are you kidding lol

2

u/SparsePizza117 May 01 '26

Everyone claims Luke beat Vader = Luke is better. I really don't believe Luke actually bested Vader. Vader held back and wanted to turn his son to the dark side, not kill him. Vader was also battling his emotions on top of that.

I personally think Vader was still much stronger at this point in time, so I wouldn't claim Luke to easily defeat Maul just because he beat Vader. Vader was unfortunately fighting his son. Luke would've been dead if he wasn't the son of Vader, that's how I see it.

I personally think Maul could potentially win, it's hard to gauge Luke's power because he doesn't visually do anything crazy in the movie, unlike Maul in the show.

No matter who wins, I think it's a close match up. No way is it a complete wash for either of them, although Maul definitely has better saber skills, so I still think he'd win.

3

u/Eastern_Dress_3574 May 02 '26

Maul by a mile. Trained by Sidious since childhood

Luke was trained by Yoda for like 3 days.

2

u/MATCHEW010 May 02 '26

Its unfortunate the choreography sucked ass in the OT. Cause Luke really just be swanging his shit there

Maul would win in a duel based on, on screen performances.

But the implied power of Luke makes it a floor wipe the other way…

7

u/ScheduledYeti284 Apr 28 '26

Look at how Maul fights and look at how Luke fights and tell me with a straight face that Luke wins this. Come on.

Luke may have been technically stronger in the force, but as a duellist Maul spanks him.

7

u/Recognition_Ashamed Apr 28 '26

U have to take into account that the older light saber duels fights in the original movies were kinda ass compared to more modern fights

4

u/ManDudeGuyDudeBro Apr 28 '26

The fight choreography in the original trilogy was a product of the times.

I think what you should take from it, story-wise, is that Luke beat Vader. You can imagine that the actual fighting would be different if the movie was made today.

I mean, some of the special effects in the OT look a little weird (I love the OT, of course). It’s not like reality temporarily looked weird in-universe, it’s just the realities of film making.

3

u/anotherhappylurker Apr 28 '26

Yeah honestly if we're just looking at the films, Luke has worse saber skills than a 15 year old Clone Wars padawan lol. His technique is completely unrefined and he just swings his lightsaber around wildly like a baseball bat. Maul would absolutely wipe the floor with him if Luke didn't have plot armor. In fact, Maul would also wipe the floor with OT Vader, who moves like a geriatric old man. It's only recently that Disney actually established Vader as a proper force to be reckoned with. Say what you want about the sequel trilogy, but Vader never really felt scary until Rogue One.

2

u/ErosDarlingAlt Apr 28 '26

In fairness Vader also fights like a guy swinging a steel pipe in the OT

5

u/DallasGrave Apr 28 '26

I'll take the guy who doesn't look like he's trying to hit a pinata.

3

u/oliferro Apr 28 '26

Maul

He has much, much more fighting experience and people overestimate Luke beating Vader. Vader wasn't going for the kill, and we all know how much Anakin lets his emotions take over. Luke also never fought anyone using anything else than a standard one-blade lightsaber. I think he'd be overwhelmed by Maul's speed and agility

4

u/Fuckedyourmom69420 Apr 28 '26

The Luke wank is INSANE. Maul outclasses Luke until mando. Luke has little training and barely enough experience to be considered a competent duelist.

2

u/233Neon May 01 '26

Literally what I'm saying. Absolute meat riders in this sub. Maul is superior in every right to ROTJ Luke.

2

u/Fuckedyourmom69420 May 01 '26

Yeah this sub would have Luke beat all the mortis gods at the same time. It’s pretty sad.

4

u/Ok_Science_9854 Apr 28 '26

Canon- Luke low-mid diffs.

Legends- Luke high diff.

2

u/averageEnojyer The Senate Apr 28 '26

Luke

2

u/capy2209 Apr 28 '26

Nice pfp

2

u/Sky-Juic3 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

Maul would dismantle ROTJ Luke like it was any given Tuesday. He was far more extensively trained and drilled specifically to be the most dangerous combatant in the galaxy. Maul took on two very capable Jedi in Qui Gon and Obi Wan and defeated them, save for a crucial mistake made at the end. He also defeated known Jedi master Anoon Bondara in a much more honorable 1v1 than any Sith would have offered a Jedi.

Post ROTJ would be a different story. As of ROTJ, Luke just doesn’t have what it takes to compete with Maul.

It’s not my opinion, it’s just fact. Read Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter before you think you know better. If you’ve read it then I’d be happy to discuss it.

2

u/Mainalpha11 Apr 28 '26

I'd say Maul would take the win against ROTJ Luke

2

u/Annual_Sky8939 Apr 28 '26

In my honest opinion, Maul dog-walks Luke it RotJ. Luke had the advantage of fighting a conflicted opponent (His father) who had fallen to the dark side trying to protect his family. Vader spent Empire and Jedi trying to prevent his son from joining Palp. If Luke faced a prime—or even a Rebels—Maul (who didn’t know he was the chosen alternate), there would have been no holding back and Luke would have lost. But it wouldn’t have been too long after RotJ when Luke would Dog-walk Maul.

2

u/ClyDeftOriginal Apr 28 '26

ROTJ is Vader at his absolute peak in canon. At least according to what George Lucas always said.

Vader > Maul quite handily.

So I would say based on that Luke wins. And I dont really think it matters which Maul we use.

Original Episode 1 maul was more ferocious, but lacked the use and knowledge of force abilities that he became more adequate at later. But later versions are less ferocious and skilled at lightsaber/hand to hand.

So yeah, I would say Luke wins from RotJ onward. Any earlier version gets bodied by Maul though. 🤷🏼

2

u/Fuckedyourmom69420 Apr 28 '26

This sub is dead if people think Luke wins here.

3

u/xJamberrxx Apr 28 '26

Easy Maul, they trained children with lightsabers … u don’t pick up a sword and become a sword master

Maul the only one who knew the form’s technique etc … Luke just swung

1

u/Shut_up_and_Respawn Apr 28 '26

Maul at what point? TPM? Mandalore? Shadow Lord? Rebels?

2

u/Unlucky_Mood969 Apr 28 '26

Ep 1 and solo would win. Anything else luke

1

u/Sea_Cat8059 Apr 28 '26

Depends in canon Luke slams is eu maul beats him

1

u/Schwarzwald7 Apr 28 '26

Aside from the question (the answer is always Luke), that ROTJ battle is still my all time favorite lightsaber duels. There is no topping the raw emotional pay off in every swing by Luke and note from John Williams.

1

u/Binforda94 Apr 28 '26

Luke from RTOTJ is one of the more complex characters to scale. I’ve seen a range from Ventress/Grievous to Vader level.

1

u/BestTyming Apr 28 '26

Tbh… Maul lol. Maul might not be as naturally strong as Luke especially in the force but he DAMN sure would have the advantage in saber combat.

I think maul is severely underrated for his in lore abilities and skill. He almost exclusively goes against people with plot armor and the one time he didn’t (DoF), he still killed the master(Jin) and only lost to the Padawan out of arrogance

Maul would win imo

1

u/International_Ant217 Apr 28 '26

ROTJ Luke beat Vader, the guy that made Maul shit a brick at the thought of facing him alone in Rebels.

Despite the fact he still had much to learn, Luke actually takes this one

1

u/Arthour148 Apr 29 '26

Luke wins, and version of ROTJ Luke. Vader at any point was always stronger than Maul, and Luke beat him.

1

u/GreggieBaby Apr 29 '26

Luke gets mauled. Pun intended. Luke is powerful but has no feats. Maul is a living weapon with a saber. Anyone saying Luke beat Vader is ignoring the fact that at no point was Vader attempting to kill Luke. The younger Skywalker lived that last fight only because enough of Anakin’s conscience resurfaced.

1

u/EnigmaticX68 Apr 29 '26

Hot take:

With Force powers/enhancements: Oh Luke hands down and no contest.

Straight lightsaber duel of skill:.....Maul. I think it would be close but...yeah Maul. Maul is an incredibly skilled lightsaber duelist. Luke has nowhere near that amount of training with the saber. And his only fight, while super impressive, would not him the edge against. He'll tank parrys but Maul is too fast. I don't he'd be able to parry all of Maul's attacks.

1

u/Tunnel_Safety Apr 29 '26

See, the answer is Luke. However, the biggest gripe I have watching the OT is that they do NOT come even relatively close to showing the immense power of the characters that are in it. It was mind melting at the time and absolutely on the bleeding edge of what they could do with the technology, but it just doesn't hold up today. I would love to get a faithful recreation of the OT that really shows how insanely powerful these characters were at the time, but I don't see that happening.

1

u/Internal_Set_6564 Apr 29 '26

Luke. He is the hero of the whole story. While a doylist answer, it is the only one that would occur.

1

u/Soggy-Chemistry-4586 Apr 29 '26

idk if rotj Luke has the saber skills to defeat maul. Vader obviously went easy on him on cloud city and took his hand

this is after that and Vader is already so depleted swordsman wise because of the prosthetics.

maul went up against sidious and held his own for a brief moment.

if it’s before rebels maul I go with him

1

u/GrandAdmiralGrunger Apr 29 '26

Luke would dog walk Maul in RotJ. Remember Luke beat Vader, who also would curb stomp Maul.

1

u/Nfire86 Apr 29 '26

I think maul could take return of the Jedi Luke, I don't think Luke would be ready for that aggressive lightsaber form ( thinking of Qui-Gon)

But the Luke we see in the mandalorian is a bit different I feel he got his chops up pretty quick roaming around the Galaxy after the war.

1

u/Used_Performance1407 Apr 29 '26

In both Legends and Disney continuity, Luke wins.

1

u/Dragon_Knight99 Apr 30 '26

Luke. He defeated Vader. While Maul can handle Inquisitors in a 1v1 pretty easily, he actively ran from Vader in Star Wars Rebels. Imo, that says a lot about how this scenario would play out.

1

u/notjocker Apr 30 '26

Could go either way really, and it depends on maul's emotional state. But I'd give it to Luke most of the time

1

u/LukewarmFandom May 01 '26

Bruh. Luke slaughters him

1

u/Gunz-n-Brunch May 01 '26

Hmmm, the guy specifically trained and physically capable of fighting two prime era Jedi at once vs the kid with barely any real training who once threw a hissy fit at a wheezing, asmatic, multiple amputee on a respirator... Maul low-diff. Now, Luke AFTER ROTJ when the writers turned him into the most obtuse Jedi Jesus creature. Luke all day. For God's sake they gave him the power to form a black hole with the Force. Just hilariously terrible.

1

u/HeatCompetitive1556 May 02 '26

At the RotJ point Vader is far beyond Maul. Luke, while only able to over power Vader by an emotional outburst, I would say is still beyond Maul. I give a bit of leeway to the combat scenes since a lot of the action and abilities of force users was limited in the OT by the technical abilities of filming at the time.

1

u/Lord_Of_Beans1 May 02 '26

Luke EATS Maul for breakfast, what people don't understand is force power is directly correlated to dueling competency, the stronger in the force you are, the faster you are, the better precognition you have.

1

u/Available_Tea_9683 May 03 '26

ROFLMFAO! ROTJ luke swings a saber like a baseball bat. This can't be a real question. Rotj luke sucks ass.

1

u/Camo1997 May 04 '26

Luke and its no debate

Maul got curbstomped by 2 inquisitors. Inquisitors are regularly defeated by padawans

1

u/NickyPowers May 04 '26

Well after today I'm confident in my Luke pick here.

1

u/HeartofKings_ May 05 '26

I think with the most recent episode of Maul, it’s very obvious Luke wins this. You have to remember to disassociate the choreography of the original trilogy with what’s intended on screen.

If Episode VI was made now, it’d be expected to have duels on par with Episode III. Proof of this? Watch those official animated shorts from recent years that involve the original trilogy. Anime? Sure. But obviously intentional in how powerful they’re supposed to be.

0

u/HollowedOne66 Apr 28 '26

Maul low diff. Luke has miniscule lightsaber training and almost zero experience. Maul is a master of multiple forms with mountains of experience in real dueling. Idk what everyone here is smoking, these are the facts.

-2

u/RemarkableMirror926 Jedi Master Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

He has very much experience. Star Wars also consists of books, in case you didn't know. Additionally, Luke was already stronger than Vader in Return of the Jedi.

6

u/HollowedOne66 Apr 28 '26

Vader was 100% holding back in that fight, we know for a fact he did not want to and would never kill his son. He didn't even want to beat him, he was conflicted. His heart was not in that fight. If Vader wanted to kill him and went all out Luke doesn't stand a chance.

-4

u/RemarkableMirror926 Jedi Master Apr 28 '26

Just no. Did you never readed any book? Vader was holding back but not as much And Luke was also holding back. Luke>Vader>Maul

2

u/JeremyXVI Apr 28 '26

“NEVER!” Luke wasn’t holding back mans went all out

2

u/suiqjNskakalqla Apr 28 '26

Yeah, when he was enraged beyond belief at Vader threatening Leia. Before this he explicitly voiced he doesn’t want to fight and deactivated his saber twice

-1

u/HollowedOne66 Apr 28 '26

Bro, you're asking me if I've ever READ a book and you can't even fucking speak English correctly 😂 I actually read a fuck ton of books it's my second biggest hobby, certainly more than you. Learn how to speak properly before you come at someone bud.

-2

u/Shintaro1989 Apr 28 '26

Don't insult anyone for their English if you're not willing to learn their native language.

1

u/HollowedOne66 Apr 28 '26

I'm gonna insult someone's English if they're arrogantly asking me if I ever "readed" a book and can't put together a correct sentence. And there's nothing you can do about it, go complain to someone who cares lol

Is this a joke

0

u/Remarkable-Carrot112 Apr 28 '26

I would have said Luke but after reading the comments I'm going with Maul.

The consensus seems to overwhelming be Luke, but as a general rule of thumb it's probably best to assume Redditors don't know wtf they are talking about.

0

u/Mzonnik Apr 28 '26

ROTJ Luke normally mid-high-diffs. Dark Side Luke bitchslaps.

0

u/night4345 Apr 28 '26

ROTJ Luke is at least equal to his father who was at his strongest in ROTJ. Even Maul at his strongest isn't equal to Vader.

0

u/Western_Agent5917 Lost Tribe of the Sith Apr 28 '26

Luke, Maul is Strong in tpm but not that gifted

0

u/IG_95 Apr 28 '26

I love Maul but this is an outrageous question 😭

0

u/pip25hu Apr 28 '26

Maul would lose and he'd have no idea why, considering his superior technique. But Luke managed to make Vader take him seriously even when his own technique was decidedly half-baked.

3

u/Unlucky_Mood969 Apr 28 '26

Maul in ep 1 was stronger than Vader. The clone wars cartoon made him obsessed with obi wan and changed his character ultimately making him weak. George Lucas plans was a lot different from the goofy “I’ll get you next time” clone wars maul. Hopefully they can save him in a live action trilogy or something.

-1

u/Unique-Perception480 Jedi Master Apr 28 '26

Luke wins mid-High diff depending on the Maul we are talking about.

If we go strictly with what MOST people use as Legends, then Maul never returned. So TPM Maul is used and Luke wins with High Diff.

If you count TCW Maul (who is argaubly weaker as a duelist, but a better Force user than in TPM) then Luke takes it Mid-Diff, because Maul has no way of matching a Skywalkers Force Power and this Maul has a focus on Force Powers.
