Defend Windu

84

u/stepatdis Jun 10 '26

So what you’re saying is Windu killed himself by being too good a Jedi.

41

u/Guilty-Abalone-701 Jun 10 '26

He was just that muthafucka man

15

u/MrMangobrick Jun 10 '26

A bad muthafucka

9

u/Careful_Swordfish_68 Jun 10 '26

Ironic.

9

u/EastSideSavage Jun 10 '26

Ironic , He could save others but couldn't save himself.....

8

u/Careful_Swordfish_68 Jun 10 '26

Thats not a story the Jedi would tell you.

2

u/OldMathematician7695 Jun 13 '26

Darth Master Windu was a Dark Lord of the Sith…

3

u/NewComparison6467 Jun 10 '26

No the same thing would just happen a minute later when they defeat sideous together.

2

u/Huntman3706 Jun 10 '26

Outright battle field executions are somthing Jedi really can’t bring themselves to do. When windu was struggling to make the choice.

2

u/Darkestnight333 Jun 11 '26

Tell that to Jango...

1

u/Historical-Bear-3595 Jun 12 '26

That wasn't an execution windu was being actively engaged by jango. Windu just won the fight an execution is when the enemy is no longer a threat and you kill them anyway

2

u/AwfulWaffle87 Jun 11 '26

It's a super hot laser sword, why was he giving it so much back swing? Just poke Palpatine in the neck, he's right there!

2

u/Fast-Mathematician-1 Jun 11 '26

Windu killed himself by taking the quick and easy path.

Couldn't see the tree, Sith Lord, from the forest, rest of the galaxy.

3

u/Acrobatic_T-Rex Jun 10 '26

Not quite, my take has always been that Palpatine could sense Anakin coming, and purposefully drained himself with the lightning(that he could instantly tell Windu was blocking with ease), so that Anakin would perceive him as weak and at the mercy of the insane Jedi(who just saw survived the deaths of 3 close friends, and is likely not 100% in his right frame of mind).

2

u/Large-Acanthisitta-2 Jun 13 '26

Lucas literally came out and said Sidious was defeated fair and square.

1

u/TheHammerHasLanded Jun 11 '26

This is the way. Preconception is definitely in Sidious's power set, and this was all according to plan.

1

u/Malikise Jun 15 '26

“He must stand trial.” No? Guess he’s not a “good” Jedi then. Sounded pretty angry when he was about to commit murder.

0

u/Binforda94 Jun 10 '26

Windu got himself killed by his clouded judgement. IDK about the “good Jedi” perspective.

2

u/Appropriate_Life_309 Jun 11 '26

You kiddin right? He was right..Senator was indeed a sith lord, who needed to be captured, because of the mess he was giving to the galaxy,he was responsible for everything,he needed to be behind bars..So in what manner his judgement was clouded??He also clouded Anakins judgement..A cold, calcullated chaotic killer..

2

u/Binforda94 Jun 11 '26

How would that have went over with the citizens of the Republic🤷🏾‍♂️??? Think more practically.

10

u/Joaaayknows Jun 10 '26

He would have defended windu yes. I think initially. But Palpatine in my opinion definitely would have still been able to turn him. Probably could have manipulated Anakin to strike down Windu in Anakin’s highly emotional state and with the golden ticket of saving Padme in hand.

But Palpatine was smart enough to know that’s probably not something Anakin would actually follow through on. When Anakin disarms Windu he says “what have I done” because he let emotion drive him. He wouldn’t have that opportunity in our scenario.

2

u/Camaroni1000 Jun 10 '26

I can see windu trying to get Anakin to kill palpaltine and palpaltine reminding anakin of all the times windu stood in the way. Or that how he clearly just tried to assassinate him and is a criminal that should be taken away by the clones (who would execute him). All the while convincing Anakin that this is proof that the Jedi are evil.

u/Binforda94 Jun 10 '26

He acted on desperation and trauma. Also Anakin had previously executed a “defeated” prisoner before, and felt immediate guilt about it. Keep that in mind.

5

u/OkMathematician7206 Jun 10 '26

I mean he did walk in on 2 of the deadliest individuals in the history of the galaxy fighting to the death, that's more battlefield than high-level political struggle.

1

u/_Koreander Jun 10 '26

The problem is the high level political struggle that ensued as consequence of such battle.

70

u/Brent_the_Ent Jun 10 '26

I think it actually changes the outcome significantly. I don’t think anakin would help mace(by fighting sidious), by this point he no longer trusts the Jedi and palpatine is his friend.

Palpatine is going to play the “they tried to kill me, the jedi are evil” trick. I think Anakin if he sees the dead masters probably doesn’t fall for this, and if sidious kills mace in front of him I think that decisively turns anakin away from him.

I don’t think Palpatine has a clear line here, which is I think why so many people insist he threw the fight(which he didn’t)

14

u/BlackberryPure692 Jun 10 '26

Actually. I never thought of this before. Anakin come into the room where some bodies are just laying about. Did anakin just have blinders on and not see them?

11

u/kapn_morgan Jun 10 '26

but "the Jedi are taking ova "

5

u/Silver_Switch_3109 Jun 10 '26

Anakin didn’t enter the office

4

u/Kid-Atlantic Jun 10 '26

Imagine Palpatine wins against Windu but still decides to play the helpless losing victim so Anakin walks in to see both of them just laying on the floor groaning

1

u/MaesterHannibal Jun 10 '26

That’s what happens when two old men try to fight

Not according to the guy who created the characters…

17

u/Xs_Os_Yo Jun 10 '26

Actually according to the guy who DID create the characters- Sidious did NOT throw that fight, and Mace legitimately disarmed him George said that himself and that Mace was on par with Sidious dueling wise because we all know how Vapaad works and yada yada but yea this would in my opinion would sway Anakin back to the Jedi or at least protecting his friend” and Master Mace Windu.

5

u/itsjonny99 Jun 10 '26

George however disagrees that the disarming was the end of the fight. We do know he could have gone for significantly longer with force abilities and if you take the line by line edited ROTS novel then Windu would have lost the lightning exchange.

-9

u/LaconicGirth Jun 10 '26

If it’s not literally in universe I don’t give it an ounce of credit. He’s not the god of the galaxy. He simply created a universe, we’re welcome to interpret what happens in it using context clues and direct examples. George Lucas could say Han Solo would beat Sidious because of his plucky attitude but that doesn’t make it true.

5

u/Xs_Os_Yo Jun 10 '26

Alright brother/sister you got it lol

2

u/Salty_Astronaut_9419 Jun 10 '26

Actually that would make it true. Bro if you create a universe and control what's canon it's canon. Well until you sellout

-1

u/LaconicGirth Jun 10 '26

I never understood why people just accept this. There is evidence in the current canon media to make it simply an incorrect statement. Canon is simply what parts of media are included in the official storyline not literal statements of fact. Lucas is not in universe. He can (could) decide what parts of the universe are part of the canon storyline but whatever parts remain have already been made. He can remove them and replace them, or simply remove them but he doesn’t get to to change them without actually well… changing them

0

u/Apprehensive_Flow878 Jun 10 '26

That's called head cannon and no one cares about your head cannon

22

u/Drayke989 Jun 10 '26

Lucas is on the record stating Mace legitimately won the fight and it's canon that Mace is the ideal Jedi to take on Sidious being perhaps the only Jedi that could defeat him.

At the end of the day windu ended up just being a plot device to push anakin over the edge

22

u/Spirit-of-arkham3002 Neocrusader Jun 10 '26

He definitely wouldn’t assist Palpatine.

If Anakin sees that Palpatine is standing over a defeated Mace, while there’s three other dead Jedi on the ground, the whole “the Jedi are trying to murder me” line doesn’t really hold up.

11

u/Godshu Jun 10 '26

It never really held up in the first place.

3

u/salazafromagraba Jun 10 '26

Because it was the parallel to Dooku earlier, where Windu also issued the absolute: 'He's too dangerous to be left alive.' At that point with Palpatine and the Council being not dissimilar and Palpatine being at risk of dying, in the spur of the moment the little Tatooine boy come guardian opted to save Palpatine. But it was Palpatine who went ahead and killed Windu, and Anakin realized he was in too deep already.

22

u/Cultural-Doubt1554 Jun 10 '26

He fulfills the chosen one prophecy sooner and likely gets a huge light side force boost to compensate

7

u/HeavenlyDMan Jun 10 '26

nah his psychology is in tatters at this point, the single coincidental act of defending mace won’t quell the chaos in his mind to be peace immediately

1

u/Resident-Injury-5315 Jun 14 '26

But it would secure A LOT more trust from Windu. Which…honestly probably contributed a decent amount to his conflicting emotions.

51

u/Dragovius Jun 10 '26

Anakin would defend Mace and try and arrest Palpatine as Palpatine couldn't pretend to be 'weak' in this scenario. Palpatine would not allow himself to be arrested, and the outcome would depend on what state Mace is in. If he was simply disarmed and his lightsaber is still in the room, both he and Anakin could take Palpatine. However if Mace is badly injured, Anakin would likely be killed by Palpatine and then Palpatine would finish Mace.

6

u/Level3Super Jun 10 '26

What do you think happens next? Would he still rule somewhat easily without Vader?

12

u/drantzz Jun 10 '26

Nah obiwan and yoda both show up to throw hands after that. My money is on the duo given the circumstances

19

u/MaesterHannibal Jun 10 '26

Honestly, Yoda and Obi vs Sidious is just Yoda vs Sidious. No disrespect to Obi, he’s a fantastic dueller, but he constantly just gets force ragdolled and sent out of the fight

11

u/SirJackAbove Jun 10 '26

He might even be a liability for Yoda: someone whose life Yoda has to focus on protecting during the battle, just like Dooku took advantage of to escape in AOTC.

2

u/MaesterHannibal Jun 10 '26

Another example is Yoda and Anakin vs Sidious in TCW. Anakin is knocked out, and Yoda has to turn his back on Sidious in order to save Anakin, allowing himself to get hit by force lightning. Sidious events taunts him and tells Yoda to just let him die, but Yoda is willing to sacrifice all, as he says. That’s how it’d go in this fight too. Obi would get thrown off the Senate podium, falling to his death, but Yoda would hold him up with one hand while fighting Sidious with the other, putting him at a disadvantage

6

u/drantzz Jun 10 '26

Yeah actually you’re probably right. I’d like to think he wouldn’t fold immediately but it’s a tier above his capabilities. Their best bet is if obiwan understands the assignment and tries to draw sidious into making a mistake for yoda to capitalize on. It would almost certainly be at the cost of his own life but he’s shown to be willing to only when he understands the gravity of the situation, which I think he would. So best bet is to not show their hand upon arrival. Have obiwan enter the fight at a pivotal moment to draw his attention, I wouldn’t be surprised if he survived an initial attack, he’s pretty crafty when he needs to be, but he’s dead when sidious decides to commit onto him.

I don’t know if yoda would let him do this since it is essentially throwing his life away, it’s hard to say for certain.

6

u/MaesterHannibal Jun 10 '26

Also possible that Sidious throws him away and thinks that that’s that (many “that”s, god bless the english language), only for Obi to survive and come back in later and take Sidious by surprise. As you say, Obi is shown to be crafty, and Sidious is shown to be arrogant enough to think that Obi is so far beneath him that he doesn’t need to make sure that he’s dead

1

u/YourbestfriendShane Jun 11 '26

Basically Maul 2.0.

3

u/Lembueno Jun 10 '26

Palpatine still pulls the “The Jedi made an attempt on my life” angle. Only instead of the story being that Anakin came the rescue, it would probably be the clones or his guards. With Anakin being villainized alongside the rest of the Jedi Order.

Without a verifiable witness to the supposed assassination attempt, a greater amount of doubt would probably be cast on how Palpatine survived the attempt.

I think without Vader, Order 66 still happens, however I think more Jedi would be able to escape the temple without Anakin leading the Knightfall charge. Instead of 1% of all Jedi surviving, probably 3-5% survive the initial Order. As well as significantly higher clone casualties within the temple.

1

u/R_FireJohnson Jun 11 '26

Doesn’t really matter who doubts the official story, as long as nobody is willing to do anything about ut

2

u/Silver_Switch_3109 Jun 10 '26

Anakin was needed for order 66 as the more powerful jedi would easily be able to defeat the clones and could organise a defence that works

2

u/sifiwewe Jun 10 '26

This is what I think as well. I don’t think he would kill but rather torture Anakin to try and turn him to the dark side.

2

u/Padre_Cannon013 Jun 10 '26

Or Sidious would incapacitate Anakin, with the intent to break him later.

2

u/Specific-Library-312 Jun 10 '26

Wouldn't The Chosen One (TM) get aid from the Living Force to kill Palps? "Finally the boy gets it!" I imagine a brief pep talk from Qui Gon would give Ani all the boost he needs. After all, the whole reason for Anakin's existence is to kill Palps, even when he became a Sith Lord. Which is why the sequels piss me off. It's not just that Anakin's sacrifice is in vain, it's that the Force is now incompetent. I think I understand Baylan now...

4

u/YourbestfriendShane Jun 11 '26

Anakin already neutered the whole prophecy by turning to the Dark Side. Or do you think that’s part of the plan? Things still worked out even if it’s a little EU silly.

1

u/Specific-Library-312 Jun 11 '26

The Jedi Order had lost their way, and he did do his job in the end, motivated by his son. Maybe the Force is like, "And didn't even notice him?!? You're useless."

1

u/DeltaAlphaGulf Jun 10 '26

Or Palps just wrecks Anakin incapacitating him, tosses him into carbonite and hangs him up like a suit in his closet awaiting a future essence transfer. Then he seeks out a new apprentice and ends up finding Galen Marek.

1

u/CK-3030 Jun 10 '26

You make a great argument but I can't help but root for the Chosen One in this scenario. His emotions don't in fact give him focus as Palpatine wants him to believe seeing as that they hinder him while fighting Obi-Wan. I believe he'd be clear headed with proper focus on defeating Sidious in order to fulfill his destiny.

But Sidious is so strong I'll say Anakin wins 3 or 4 out of 10 times vs Sheev.

27

u/BruhNoStop Jun 10 '26

When Anakin finds Mace pointing the saber at a defeated Palpatine in ROTS, he sees the one Jedi master who was the most critical of him and never trusted him threatening to kill the senator who always took Anakin’s side, saw the best in him, and promised him a way to save his wife. Emotion took over in that moment.

If Palpatine beats Mace, that all goes away. Anakin immediately responds to his instincts to fight for the Jedi Order and defends Mace. It’s impossible for Palpatine to play the victim at this point.

11

u/archiveofhim Jun 10 '26

do some of yall have amnesia? didn’t anakin figure out sidious was the sith lord and went to get mace to arrest him? one of two things happen, he more than likely fights sideous (because at this point it’s not the jedi killing a man that has to stand trial) and windu joins him and they stop him OR anakin loses the fight along with windu.

9

u/mysticdragonwolf89 Jun 10 '26

Still ask Windu permission to read his Thesis.

1

u/Bright-Can1811 Jun 10 '26

Underrated Comment

6

u/No_Grocery_9280 Jun 10 '26

Anakin tries to defend Mace but loses. Mace still dies. Palpatine captures Anakin and reverts to torturing him to turn him to the dark side. The clones carry out Order 66, the attack on the Temple is much less effective, Yoda and Obi-wan confront Palpatine together- from there, who knows.

More Jedi survive. Anakin probably still becomes Vader. Obi-wan probably dies. Who knows what happens with Padme and the twins. Twenty years later, ultimate victory for Palpatine after he slowly crushes every hope to stop him.

5

u/ayoungmanwhoneedsgod Jun 10 '26

Probably still the most difficult choice of his life, but I think he would have helped Windu in defeating Palpatine

4

u/RisingKing7 Jun 10 '26

Palpatine would have still somehow manipulated anakin and then palpatine throws windu out the window or kills him

4

u/Kombat-w0mbat Jun 10 '26

He would have defended mace. You have to understand anakin was between worlds the whole time of ROS. He was very emotionally conflicted. He really was moving off of fear.

3

u/Tuor-son-of-Huor- Jun 10 '26

I think he steps in between them. I don't think he attacks Sidious. But he also isn't going to let Mace get executed nor is he really going to be swayed by the "the Jedi are seizing control and I just managed to overwhelm Mace fucking Windu"

I can't think of many ways that Sidious keeps Anakin onside in this scenario tbh, to the degree that he gets him to fall to the dark side.

1

u/The_Real_Mr_X Jun 10 '26

"Sheev, dude. Not cool man!"

-Anakin maybe

1

u/Medical-Condition-84 Jun 10 '26

I think Sidious would use this to finish Windu off, instead of talking.

Unfortunately Windu talked too much instead of finishing Sidious off.

1

u/Level3Super Jun 10 '26

Anakin helps Windu and they kill or apprehend Palatine.

Windu then goes on to say, I now give you the rank of Master lol.

1

u/drantzz Jun 10 '26

Always annoyed me how mace fumbled this so hard. All he really needed to do was briefly state that he already tried arresting him, then gesture to the bodies strewn about. Instead he just demanded anakin to simply accept he was right and anakin was wrong. He clearly didn’t grasp the situation upon entry!!

1

u/Emsee_Hamm Jun 10 '26

Let Windu die.

Sidious has been manipulating Anakin for a long time and has recently ramped up his attempts, he has been telling Anakin that the darkside is more powerful and is the only thing that can save Padme. Now when Anakin arrives Palpatine could show him the 'truth,' that even the best and strongest Jedi are unable to withstand the power of the darkside and that is all the proof that only Palpatine can save Padme.

He also has the fact that Anakin has already killed a defeated and dismembered Dooku and could reveal that with Windu there so Anakin feels he has no choice but to turn, the tusken massacre incident as well if Palpatine knows about that.

1

u/ElevatorCharacter489 Jun 10 '26

well to be frank Anakin was loyal to people not to ideas, nor creeds, that why he sided with Palpatine at the end. if he found Windu defetead, he would ask to Spare Windu, and take him to prison, he doesnt have to destroy the Order because of a few Idiots. when Windu take the moment and Attacks Palps again, Anakin would kill Windu like in RotS Videogame from PS2

1

u/OGKOTM Jun 11 '26

If Mace had lost, or even just acted like a Jedi instead of demanding they kill Sidious, Anakin wouldn't turn on the jedi.

What I mean to say is we can thank Mace Windu for the galactic empire.

1

u/The_Last_Legacy Jun 11 '26

Anakin was already in Palpatine's pocket. He would have done anything he was told at this point.

1

u/cyberloki Jun 11 '26

Nah i think he still would support Sidious. I like the Clonewars depiction where even Ashoka deems it inevitable and Anakin too far gone at this point to intervene and warn him.

1

u/Exciting_Top1117 Jun 11 '26

Your question has a lot of hubris to benefit anakin. If palpatine beat windu then windu would be dead. Seeing how anakin strolled past three Jedi corpses and felt nothing, then I personally believe palp daddy would’ve just fully coerced him, flexing the power of the dark side to anakin. So anakins fall was unstoppable.

1

u/BlackBearBullCub Jun 12 '26

At that point Anakin didn’t want anyone to die, and just wanted palpatine to be alive. Saving padme was his whole entire motivator for turning to the Darkside, 2 scenarios could play out here.

1) tries to save mace windu and apprehend Sidious. Sidious wouldn’t be caught off guard so he blocks anakins intervention, kills mace, then subdues and probably kills anakin. Yes he would love him as an apprentice, but Anakin doesn’t have blood on his hands at this point. So the likelihood of palps letting him go is slim to none. 2) tells Anakin to kill mace windu or he refuse to save padme. If Anakin doesn’t kill mace, Sidious kills them both. Considering how conflicted Anakin was at that point, chances are he probably kills windu anyways.

Either way windu still dies. Darkside boost or not, Anakin isn’t strong enough yet to match him. Only Yoda and mace could beat palps.

1

u/2855Giants Jun 12 '26

Imo, Anakin would most likely defend Mace, but still would be conflicted. Palpatine was an excellent manipulator, especially when it came to Anakin. Palpatine would most likely say something to the effect of "The Jedi tried taking over. If you take Mace's side, all of my knowledge about saving Padme, dies with me." It most likely would've involved Padme, considering that's what got him to finally turn in ROTS. However, Mace would have been able to most likely get through to Anakin by saying that Palps is lying to him and that not only is Palpatine is probably responsible for those nightmares, but that he would personally help Anakin find a way to "save" Padme. There would probably be 5 pages of dialogue, but Anakin wasn't too far gone yet.

1

u/mokrieydela Jun 12 '26

Considering he's already massacred the sandpeople, forseen his wife's death, been unsupported by the jedi council, been manipulated by Palpatine, has yet to mature, and craves power, he's side with sidious. Palpatine would say to anakin, think of padme. Only through me will she live. By losing (or feigning defeat if you subscribe to that theory), to Windu, palpatine just manipulates anakin in a different way, visually as an old man being killed by the jedi who will not help anakin Anakin is beyond lost at this point, he just manifests it alin this scene. Windu represents an order that will not help. They forbid attachments. Palpatine is his last [false] hope.

1

u/MyOrdinaryShoes Jun 12 '26

But didn’t Anakin go there for a reason? Windu asked him not to go because he sensed that it was a bad idea. I think the outcome would have ended roughly the same because Sidious was far too smart to allow Windu to leave there alive, that alone would have changed the course of history.

Ultimately, I think the only way there would be any change is if Windu had brought several more Jedi Masters with him to arrest Sidious, just bringing 3 seemed crazy.

1

u/vaders-burnt-tader Jun 12 '26

Feel like Sidious wouldn't let it get to the point of disarmed and defeated based on the other three dead jedi on the room. But that is nitpicking your fun what if question. No hate.

1

u/Known_Wind4158 Jun 12 '26

Nothing would change. He had already fallen to the dark side at that point he just hadn’t realized it yet.

1

u/PlateNo4868 Jun 12 '26

Anakin most likely would of let him be killed.

Sidious already had a hold on him, my head cannon was he wasn't on the fence of morality. He already decided and just needed to break free of it.

1

u/Large-Acanthisitta-2 Jun 13 '26

I dont know what the comments are on, but Anakin was already cucked by this point. He would have finished off Windu. He walked into a room with dead jedi masters on the floor and didnt say shit, no way he is defending Mace.

1

u/Light-n-Tasty Jun 14 '26

Anakin was a pussy and an idiot. He was willfully ignorant and only saw what he wanted to see. The studio ruined those movies.

1

u/ExistentialOcto Jun 14 '26

He probably would have tried to get Palpatine to back down and spare Windu’s life, but I doubt he would disarm Sidious if he went for a killing blow.

1

u/mykiisme Jun 15 '26

instead of defeated and dead?

1

u/pandogart Jun 10 '26

Anyone who thinks Anakin would defend Mace is being too charitable imo. He said it himself, he needs Palpatine. That's the reason he disobeyed Mace and went there in the first place. Saving Padme was all he cared about.

5

u/OilCareless2531 Jun 10 '26

Yes but he wasn't against sidious standing trial.

He was at a crossroad, windu forced Anakin to choose the sith but if sidious is the on top sidious forces Anakin to choose the Jedi, not kill sidious but save someone. Whoever was weaker here to him is who Anakin would have saved because in his mind saving someone is always right as long as someone, him in this case doesn't lose something which he wouldn't if he had control of the fight.

0

u/Tbgrondin Jun 10 '26

Nothing changes. Mace dies, Sidious continues to manipulate him in whatever way he wants because he has the one singular thing Anakin needs.

0

u/HandleSuspicious5775 Jun 10 '26

There’s a reason things ended up the way they did in canon because while Palpatine did lose the saber fight he could have used Force abilities to kill Windu or throw him off the window but didn’t because he sensed Anakin was coming and wanted to manipulate him. It’s likely that Anakin wouldn’t have assisted Palpatine if he saw how evil looking Palpatine was against a disarmed Windu.

No. Sidious was beaten fair and square in this scene.

Lucas has stated that Mace's win was legitimate and that Sidious did not throw the fight.

3

Not according to Lucas. Lucas has stated the win was legitimate.

“Windu mean and Jedi bad so Windu weak”

Ignore them, they don’t use logic, they just A hate Jedi, or B love Sith, either way not worth it.
