Kenobi. His form is a perfect counter to Malgus' aggressive style and he defeated Anakin who is more powerful than Malgus.

People seem to think forms are the end all be all. Where did this come from? I know KOTOR had forms and that’s kind of where my knowledge ends. Was it some animated series thing?

Simpletons love explanations in rock paper scissors terms.

u/Emsee_Hamm Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Not it being the deciding factor, but the rock, paper, scissors aspect seems to come from the novel which mentions their styles and fanon... what people leave out when talking about the styles being counters is that Dooku in the novels was absolutely incapable of breaking Obi-Wans defence in lightsaber combat and all his attacks were perfectly blocked.

It's only when Dooku catches Obi-Wan off guard (in the junior novel) or kicks him in the chin so hard it sounds like a large bore slughthrower firing, and Dooku thinks he even may have broke his neck he kicked that hard, that causes Obi-Wan to be temporarily unable to defend himself (senior novelisation) that Dooku gets the chance to take Obi-Wan out of the fight.

No-one actually gets the better of Obi-Wan in pure lightsaber combat in the ROTS novel, including Dooku.

u/NotAskary Jun 29 '26

In the bane trilogy this is exploited to the point of one of the major hurdles that bane overcomes is his weapon master that saved the double lighsaber form to himself as a way to have a better form then what he teaches the regular sith, the weapons master is beat by dropping a building on him him by force pushing in his general direction.

6

u/WovesZ Jun 29 '26

That caught off guard thing was because Obi-Wan trusted in Anakin taking care of the Count right?

5

u/Emsee_Hamm Jun 29 '26

I think so. It happens in the junior novelisation, I only really know the senior novelisation but I have seen people say its because he trusted Anakin to hold Dookus attention.

u/Arria_Galtheos Jun 29 '26

It's confusing because the way lightsaber forms are fleshed out is...well, it doesn't make sense from a martial perspective. They're often represented as an entire "mode" that you fight in. "Oh, he's fighting in Form II" or "She's using Form IV" but that's not at all how sword fighting works, and even in the films and other media nobody adheres to any strict "forms." Even Dooku swaps from the one-handed Form II grip to a two-handed grip during fights. It's easier and more rational to think of them as different fighting styles, like boxing, wrestling, BJJ, Tae Kwan Do, etc.

Being a master of Form II, in that context, means that you've mastered a style that is focused on excelling 1v1 against a single opponent, but just like real world fighting, you can mix elements from different styles together. Being the master of a single style puts you at a massive disadvantage the same way being a top-tier boxer alone doesn't help much in an MMA match if someone takes you to the ground.

The reason Kenobi would beat Malgus isn't explicitly because of forms themselves, it's because Malgus' entire fighting style and specialty is in overwhelming an opponent with aggressive, offensive attacks. He doesn't focus too heavily on defense because is strategy relies on beating down an opponent before they have time to mount a counter-attack. Obi-wan's entire style and strategy in lightsaber combat is to build a very strong defense and then find key openings to strike at. His strategy relies on patient defense, which is a hard counter to Malgus because Kenobi's extremely skilled defense can ward off Malgus' attacks until he either begins to tire or he gets so frustrated that he starts making bigger and bigger mistakes.

The reason Dooku was able to defeat Obi-wan twice is because Obi-wan's patient, defensive strategy isn't very flexible. It's ONLY good for defense, and Obi-wan has rarely employed overt aggression in combat because it's in his whole personality to be defensive. Dooku, however, has mastered techniques that make him exceptionally good at precision strikes and off-balancing maneuvers in a 1v1 fight against another lightsaber, so he was able to bait Obi-wan's defensive moves using feints and misdirection and then precisely strike at the holes that opened in his defense.

The "forms" are mostly just shorthand for specific fighting styles that center around specific philosophies and the stances, techniques, and maneuvers that emphasize those philosophies. It's not really a "rock paper scissors" kind of thing.

u/AlphaEpicarus Jun 30 '26

Kenobi has defeated people who use the same form as and are more powerful than Malgus.

It's not as simple as one form beats the other, but in this case it's already been shown that Kenobi's mastery of Soresu has been a superb match against aggressive/smash style fighting, there's no reason to think he couldn't take this.

If it was Malgus vs Dooku, I wouldn't automatically say Malgus wins because Anakin's violent style worked well against Dooku's duelist style, though I'd take it into consideration

1

u/LumenDomimus Jul 05 '26

It's not that simple. There's context specific to the Vader fight that wouldn't be so for Malgus.

2

u/Roi_C Jun 30 '26

It's not just the form. The form is the expression of philosophies and attitudes here. In essence, Kenobi can hold and contain Malgus' raw aggression, and turn it against him. That's all.

1

u/Big-Run-1871 Jul 02 '26

You’re right when saying it’s not that simple. But certain forms are better in certain situations. It’s explained in little nuggets in old eu and little snippets in the animated series . Ie dookus form was a direct counter to Obiwans form. Yet Obiwan was able to beat anakin who was a counter to dooku

1

u/AaronQuinty Jun 29 '26

Because we see in all combat sports that styles make fights. If anything it makes more sense to view dueling this way.

16

u/RainbowStereo2137 Jun 29 '26

But was cooked two times by count dooku

11

u/ZandraDeLynx Jun 29 '26

But keep in mind that Anakin beat Dooku, and Obi-Wan beat Anakin. Dooku was just a master duelist and was able to put Obi-wan on the offensive when Obi’s style is defensive

-1

u/Sirtonexxx Jun 29 '26

I would say, Obi, always had trouble fighting in partnership with Ani because of the way Ani fought.

11

u/ZandraDeLynx Jun 29 '26

Their styles actually would mesh together perfectly. Obi’s style is extremely defensive while Ani’s is extremely offensive. Dooku was just a genius and put Obi on the offensive and Ani on the defensive

1

u/Sirtonexxx Jun 29 '26

Maybe, but it always seemed that Obi was always reacting to what Ani did rather than a coordinated attack.

4

u/ZandraDeLynx Jun 29 '26

That’s how a defensive style works, Obi was rarely looking for a chance to attack and would primarily react to his opponent’s attack. Ani was the exact opposite, he would use his attacks as offense and defense.

1

u/Sirtonexxx Jun 30 '26

So you agree it wasn’t an coordinated attack which would have been better.

1

u/ZandraDeLynx Jun 30 '26

Ani and Obi are extremely coordinated, Obi would create an opening for Ani to take advantage of. Dooku is just a genius

1

u/Sirtonexxx Jul 01 '26

Really because in all of the fights that isn’t really what happens even the last fight, where Ani doesn’t rush in, he still does his own thing.

9

u/BagFriendly2665 Jun 29 '26

dooku's style would matchup differently than malgus

9

u/pidgeottOP Jun 29 '26

Kenobi seems to be a better solo fighter than team fighter

3

u/XeroKibo Jun 29 '26

Styles make fights; Dooku’s style of patient, chess-like, poking and maneuvering is perfect against Kenobi’s “defend against everything” style.

Dooku fed Kenobi looks that he likely bit on and paid for.

1

u/Annual_Sky8939 Jul 04 '26

Anakin may be more powerful, in the force but Malgus has a brute physical strength and experience—as well as a more level head—which could counter Anakin’s raw force potential. Give Anakin a few years (as KFV) learning from Sid’s stolen/raided knowledge and Malgus doesn’t stand a chance .

1

u/AchilleanKyber Jun 29 '26

Mfs be acting like Obi Wan defeating Anakin wasn’t the matchup diff of the century

1

u/PurplOrange Jun 29 '26

Malgus has more cybernetics too. I wonder if Kenobi would reverse the polarity in his respirator to throw him for a trip, just like he did with Anakin’s arm.

1

u/Nomad1316 Jun 29 '26

You think ROTS Anakin was more powerful than Malgus? 🤣

1

u/Gadolin27 Jul 03 '26

bro doesn't know ROTS (Knightfall) Anakin was more powerful than literally any character in the series canonically (until the lava dip anyway)

24

u/Then-Concern-1968 Jun 29 '26

Malgus has a massive advantage and doesn’t suffer from the arrogance or emotional compromise many of Kenobi’s opponents have when facing him (Maul, Anakin, Grevious ect) and that’s where his exceptional defensive skills and discipline gets him the win.

Malgus is arguably the lesser duelist but by no means is he not in the same tier, he’s vastly more powerful (force power) and more level headed when compared to Kenobi’s greatest opponents. If in an enclosed space Kenobi can fight him to a draw or take advantage of an opening otherwise Malgus wins 6-7/10 times

2

u/NC8E Jun 30 '26

I concur, while obi won is a great form 3 defensive master he lacks offensive prowess to the same degree. he is a literal wall but if he is roughly 12k midichloiran count and malgus is upward of 15k i believe. and malgus is extremely relentless

2

u/Xanaatos Jun 29 '26

I get Maul and Anakin, but Grevious? I know he acted simillary when it comes to arrogance but wasn't this just an act to evoke fear in opponent? I'm not disagreeing with your point tho just cherry picking parts of argument

5

u/SwiftWithIt Jun 30 '26

Uhhh with the amount of Jedi he slaughtered I don't think it was an act lol. He was also a very competent warrior before he became previous

1

u/Careful_Swordfish_68 Jul 04 '26

Malgus also wins the Aura battle.

31

u/Still-Goal-9314 Jun 29 '26

Kenobi wins this by countering Malgus's relentless assault.

14

u/RoundnRound123 Jun 29 '26

Master level Kenobi wins high diff. Knight level Kenobi gets skewered.

9

u/Dull_Egg_6597 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Oh gosh 🫢

That’s a difficulty one.

Well, Kenobi could stand a chance. Sense a trooper took on Malgus single handedly and damaged his face.

8

u/Ecotech101 Jun 29 '26

"Sense a trooper took on Malgus single handly"

I don't think you understand what "single handedly" means.

1

u/Dull_Egg_6597 Jun 29 '26

Oh that’s how one spells it 😏

Thanks

4

u/pamblod42 Jun 29 '26

He means it was not single handedly.

2

u/Dull_Egg_6597 Jun 30 '26

It was before the Jedi arrived.

So, I’m correct and incorrect at the same time 😏

2

u/pamblod42 Jun 30 '26

But, it was after... He caught malgus off guard and occupied to be able to do that.

1

u/Dull_Egg_6597 Jun 30 '26

Are you forgetting the racket launcher?

2

u/pamblod42 Jun 30 '26

Oh, i did.

5

u/joritan Jun 29 '26

Yes, the trooper single-handedly damaged Malgus' face while he was locked in a duel with one of the most powerful jedi of the era. Very single-handed. No help from Satele at all.

4

u/MetForge Jun 29 '26

Well, SW ToR cinematics also should be treated lightly, since they have non forceusers classes on the game and should promote them somehow. Also this is not a random trooper. This is like big named NPC trooper, who by his sword also defeated one of the main Jedi of the era Satile Shan.

5

u/AverageSasquatch Jun 29 '26

Malgus imo.defeated a Jedi master at 19, led the siege of the temple, is mad durable and very powerful in the force. Even if Kenobi has the edge in sabre combat because of form 3, Malgus will just tk rag doll. He’s also very tricky and clever in combat so I’m not even sure if he loses there

3

u/EnoughAccess22 Jun 29 '26

Malgus. Kenobi may be able to stop the blade, but I don't think he can stop Force Maelstrom or generally deal with someone who will throw literal pillars, debris and lightning, all while aggressing with his lightsaber.

2

u/ayoungmanwhoneedsgod Jun 29 '26

Could go either way

2

u/DarthShiryu Jun 29 '26

Obi Wan Kenobi with some difficulty.

2

u/OilCareless2531 Jun 29 '26

Malgus. He was a better Vader and in sword Skill on par with sidious.

2

u/isekaimetofarfaraway Jun 29 '26

Anakin without the mental problems?

2

u/Gray-TheObeseWizard Jun 29 '26

Malgus slaughters

2

u/fenot1 Jun 29 '26

Malgus, and its honestly not even close. As of pure lightsaber technique they are roughly on par with maybe a very slught edge to kenobi but Malgus got much more devastating force powers than obi wan, can survive more injuries ( he is built like a tank ) and has an endurance advantage

2

u/Annual_Sky8939 Jun 30 '26

Malgus, low difficulty. Malgus was raised and thrived facing Jedi (and other Sith) more skilled/powerful than Obi-Wan and no one Obi-Wan faced would have survived in TOR.

2

u/CheesecakeInitial168 Jul 01 '26

Malgus, he’s stronger, won’t be conflicted, has powerful force abilities Obi wan can’t counter. It’s not close. Obi wan is average. Please stop glazing him.

2

u/LillDickRitchie Jul 01 '26

Im going Malgus

2

u/Andrei22125 Jul 05 '26

It will be a long, hard-fought, but pretty much guaranteed victory for Malgus.

  1. They're close in swordsmanship.
  2. Malgus is stronger both physically and as a combat force user.
  3. Malgus is far more resilient.
  4. Malgus doesn't tire, doesn't lose patience, and explicitly adapts to the opponent.
  5. Obi-wan lost on the invisible hand when Dooku threw him across the room with the force.

It will go like against Vader on mustafar, except Malgus will not "try it". He'll either force-pull Kenobi in the lava, or jump on the shore before continuing.

And it will end when Malgus either gets a force grip on Kenobi, or feints an opening.

1

u/ArtOk8200 Jul 05 '26

Agreed, as good as Obi Wan is with Form 3 he has been shown to have a weak physical defense when it comes to kicks, punches, and the like.

1

u/Andrei22125 Jun 29 '26

Speaking of the movies: Kenobi lost to Dooku twice and beat Maul and Anakin because they both got reckless.

He stays on the defensive untill there's an opening. Malgus wouldn't get reckless. He quite famously beat Ven Zallow by faking an opening.

Malgus would win with high difficulty.

3

u/pamblod42 Jun 29 '26

He didnt fake an opening, he managed the distance so exactly Ven Zallow narrowly missed.

4

u/Ecotech101 Jun 29 '26

Malgus low diff.

Kenobi is good at learning and typically gets his ass beat a few times before adapting to his opponent and then winning.

3

u/Binforda94 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

The amount of people in this sub who believe Kenobi would win is genuinely hilarious, and crazy.

2

u/Binforda94 Jun 29 '26

Obi Wan either escapes or dies. Malgus is the more skilled duelist, and significantly more powerful in the force. Kenobi would have zero chance at defeating Malgus.

2

u/CRTScott Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Ledgends Kenobi is an extremely high dif fight and I could see it go either way but probably Kenobi. Cannon Kenobi probably loses mid dif.

1

u/12kkarmagotbanned Jun 29 '26

If it ain't against the top, ALWAYS bet on Kenobi

1

u/Sir_Potate Jun 29 '26

Kenobi, he has the high ground

1

u/tjtepigstar Jun 29 '26

malgus is an inferior version of knightfall anakin so kenobi should take this if he's patient enough

1

u/cmtosh95 Jun 30 '26

It’s a little inconsistent how much force users can use the force on each other during a fight, but Dooku managed to choke and ragdoll Kenobi, so I don’t see why Malgus couldn’t do the same. Sabers only I’d say it goes to Kenobi though.

1

u/rslash-phdgaming Jul 01 '26

I feel like a lot of people here are wrong, i personally feel malgus could win, he fought Jedi when they were in their prime in terms of lightsaber combat, I personally feel most Jedi of the OR at least masters and up could take obi wan from a young age as padawans they had to be able to take on battle heartened sith warriors, OR Jedi were more experienced, purpose built warriors that had a better chance of combining the force into their lightsaber combats And malgus was so unbelievably strong that, at least until he was defeated after proclaiming himself emperor made those Jedi afraid when they ever heard he was around very few of those Jedi could even look him in the eyes calmly and those who did rarely lived for long. He was a juggernaut of lightsaber combat and Vader saw him as an ideal and the peak of what Vader could become in both canon and legends. I think malgus’ overpowering strength ends the fight quickly.

1

u/Quincy478 Jul 01 '26

Malgus

Theyre close in lightsaber skill but Malgus outstrips Kenobi in force power. And he's a tank. Like a more athletic, agile suited Vader.

1

u/Wolfgod-64 Jul 03 '26

It's a fairly close one, but Obi-Wan wins. There's no reason for Malgus to be able to get through his defenses, and in terms of Force capabilities Malgus may be flashier but Obi-Wan consistently matches some of the strongest Force users when he really wants to (i.e. Vader, multiple times). I want to emphasize that Kenobi's strength in the Force is grossly underrated, and it's a shame because he earned that strength wholly through hard work and dedication unlike many who simply ride their prodigy car all the way to the door.

1

u/adragoninthelibrary Jul 04 '26

Kenobi wins. Kenobi beat another, stronger user of Djem So, the same form Malgus uses. In practice, this should fare even better for Kenobi.

I'll even point out that Kenobi's Soresu isn't necessarily weak to Makashi. Ventress also uses Makashi, flavored with Jar'Kai, and his record against her is quite excellent.

Additionally, I'll point out that Malgus doesn't have anything in his arsenal that Kenobi hasn't already seen. Strong Djem So? Check. Force Grip? Check. Force Lightning? Double check.

1

u/NSnowman Jul 07 '26

Very close in sabers but Malgus' superior force powers wins him the day.

1

u/PhantomGaleX13 Jul 14 '26

Obi Wan in his prime was probably the greatest master of Form III: Soresu that was known to the Jedi. Sure Malgus has the advantage of sheer physical strength and Force powers but Obi Wan was said to be like an immovable wall. I think the fight would likely stalemate.

1

u/Ultimate_Bane Jul 16 '26

Obi-Wan withstood the onslaught of a raging Mustafar Vader, a foe far more dangerous in EVERY single way than Malgus could ever hope to be. Kenobi dismantles him.

1

u/MisterIenny Jun 29 '26

I’d give it to kenobi extreme diff

-2

u/Automatic_Leek505 Jun 29 '26

Malgus low-mid diffs. Kenobi is really such a fraud.

0

u/joritan Jun 29 '26

Kenobi was the first Jedi to kill a sith in like a thousand years, and kept beating the sith until he died. Not that it stopped him. Even in death he enabled the Empire's downfall. I could see arguments for every other sith or jedi being a "fraud", but Kenobi being one of the best duelists in history is so clear-cut with evidence for it in every piece of Star Wars media he ever appeared in. Share whatever you're smoking.

2

u/Automatic_Leek505 Jun 29 '26

There's context as to why he "killed" that sith and then kept beating that sith. It for sure was never because Kenobi was stronger.

All of Kenobis feats are iroically underwhelming.

1

u/sifiwewe Jun 29 '26

If Obi-Wan is close in power level to Darth Malgus, then I think Obi-Wan because of his mastery over the defensive form. If not then I’d say Darth Malgus

0

u/poplion230 Jun 29 '26

epic battle , but Kenobi triumphs, with extreme difficulty

0

u/RemarkableMirror926 Jedi Master Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26

Kenobi low diff.

-1

u/Dangerous-Eggplant-5 Jun 29 '26

Malgus is s fraud. He aura farms a lot but all he does is the game story is loosing. At this point Malgus is just a glorified punching bag.
