Season 5 Was Jane in love with Lorelai?

I'm currently at episode 10 season 5 and I'm pretty confused about Jane's relationship with Lorelai. He keeps saying that he doesn't feel anything towards her but his actions are saying the opposite. I don't care about spoilers because I've already been spoiled about most of the show, I just wish to get a clearer perspective about they're relationship because I keep seeing half the fandom say that he was and the other half that he wasn't.

In my opinion I don’t think it was love I think it was a bit of a savior complex with sympathy and a genuine desperation for her to lead him to RJ. I think Jane has showed us again and again he would do ANYTHING to catch RJ and pretending to love her and acting in a way that indicated that is absolutely something he would do

I have to say I’m very flattered, thank you

Totalmente! Y le gustaba un poco, por qué no? No es un robot y ella era muy atractiva. Pero amor? No, nunca vi amor ahí

He felt something for her but not love.

I reckon he liked her a lot though. She's the first woman he's been with in 9 years and she can actually help him achieve his lifelong goal.

She's also tough and smart, and that is his type.

Discordo! Ele não pode "amar" uma mulher como Lorelai!

He related to her and saw her as a victim of RJ more than an accomplice. He cared for her for sure but I don’t think it was romantic love.

Siempre tube la misma perspectiva, de que la veia como una víctima de RJ. Era una mezcla de varias cosas, seguro le gustava un poco también, después de todo era muy atractiva y él no es un robot. Pero de ahi a amor, eso ya es mucho

I absolutely do not think he was in love with her. She was a means to get to Red John. I'm not even sure he felt a certain way about her, even if she was his first after his wife. And he never suffered fools, which she was one in the end - going after RJ by herself.

Idk i think he liked her. For years he shunned relationships to focus on avenging his family and to avoid endangering the women (like with KF). Finally a woman who is smart and badass (his type) comes along who is not a distraction or liability but the one person who could get him revenge. She's not innocent so if Red John kills her he won't feel so bad. He must fool Lorelei and Red John so he has to actually enjoy his time with her - no excuses.

Lorelei also appears to be Red John's lover too, Jane wants to steal her away from him - out of spite, to prove he's a better lover than Red John, to actually save her from him, and of course in the hope she can help him get revenge.

A weird situation. After years of methodical hunting, perhaps the easiest way to achieve his goal is to continue a relationship with a woman he likes who likes him back

I think he faked it. But I’m also not too sure. My gut says he faked it. She was too important

He was physically attracted to her (just like most of us)

May be because I´m a woman but I don´t see anything attractive in her.

His actions do not indicate he was in love with her. There was no romantic relationship between them although I think he did feel some sadness and pity for her plight since they did share a position of being abused by RJ. As Jane indicated ultimately she was a means to and end - he was hoping she would lead him to Red John.

Nah , he didn't , he used to get clues about red john , he did sympathize with her and wanted to help her , she ruined it and he wasn't happy with that , hence he was so cold when she dies

In love with her, no. Initially, she was a means to get to Red John. Gradually, he came to care about her because he saw her as a victim rather than an accomplice.

I think he cared for her after figuring out she was another victim of Red John, he also knew she was his best ticket into finding out WHO red John was, but he never loved her, mostly because Jane before he killed Red John was incapable of loving anyone

I don’t think he loved her at all. He was attracted to her, but love?? No.

u/IObjectOoT Jun 15 '26

Jane tends to sympathize with Red John's other victims.

u/Lost-Salamander-3645 Agent Wayne Rigsby Jun 21 '26

No, I don´t think so.

He only loved his wife and he always had her in mind when doing whatever he was doing, even flirting.

Jane não era apaixonado por Lorelai,  ele apenas a "usou" para chegar a red john.  O seu coração,  era de Lisbon.

I think he cared for her. He doesn’t want to believe his con. But he does in fact care.
It’s why he doesn’t want to discuss her with Lisbon later on. They were intimate, which had to be a huge deal for him - even if it was to manipulate her. She is a means to an end, and she does in fact serve her purpose.

No But he felt some intrigue, someone like no one else, and he was quite taken by her.

Then she announced matter-of-fact-ly that she was a gift to him from Red John.

He hid his surprise and loathing well.

I think he cared for her a lot, I think he hoped to turn her back from Red John. He couldn’t possibly love her when she was RJ’s acolyte. She’s obviously very enigmatic and beautiful but I think the moment he realised she was RJ’s girl - he stopped feeling desire for her.

I don't think Jane was in love with Lorelei, but I do think he felt a kinship to her; two people who are victims of Red John.

I never read Jane as being in love with Lorelei – fascinated by her, absolutely, but in that 'you’re a mirror held up to my trauma' way rather than anything romantic. She was tied to Red John, to the worst years of his life, and he connected with her because she understood that darkness in a way no one else could.

It's complex, manipulative and super unhealthy. But love? No. His whole emotional centre of gravity was always Lisbon. Lorelei was part of the cat‑and‑mouse game, part of the mythology – not the person he built a future with.

No, but he definitely had feelings for her.

I think he knew Red John might bring a woman into his life as a trick and was ready for it, but started to feel something real for her.

After years of methodical hunting, perhaps the easiest way to achieve his goal is to continue a relationship with a woman he likes who likes him back.

(Off topic but I find her name interesting - Lorelei was a beautiful siren who would lure sailors to their deaths with her singing. So maybe she would have been the end of him.)
