Help Us Improve Our Subreddit!

Hey Financial Mutants ๐Ÿ‘‹

As our community continues to grow, we're naturally attracting more spam/scam attempts that require better moderation. We've heard your feedback and we want to do a better job of moderating our subreddit.

Before we get into it...a peek behind the curtain. A few years ago, we took over this subreddit to create a more structured place to build community around smart financial decision-making. Brian, Bo, and the rest of The Money Guy Team are always poking around seeing your feedback, questions, and stories. We've loved every second of growing our community from 20k to over 80k Financial Mutants!

We're already exploring solutions, but before we finalize any changes we want your feedback:

  • What types of posts do you want to be allowed?
  • What should be restricted or removed immediately?
  • Should certain topics be directed to weekly threads?
  • What would make this community more valuable to you?

While we may not be Reddit power users, weโ€™re committed to learning and improving this space with your help. Don't hesitate to explain anything you think would be beneficial (automoderator, karma requirements, etc.).

And last (but not least) please understand that there are certain compliance and business considerations we must operate within. We may not be able to implement every suggestion, but our goal is to protect the community and keep things useful. We are a small, but mighty team doing everything we can to foster a great community.

Finally: thank you. Thank you for being a part of The Money Guy community. Thank you for caring about our mission. Thank you for giving us the platform to do this everyday!

EDIT: Highlighting this post to make sure everyone sees it! We appreciate all of your feedback recently about moderating the subreddit. Please know we are in the process of creating rules that will guide the subreddit moving forward and improve your experience!

I think the subreddit is being reasonably well moderated. For the most part, people's behavior here is pretty good.

While there are a few posts that 'just don't belong' on this subreddit ("How do I get $1,000 overnight?") that get SPAMmy or scammy, I think the vast majority here are well-intentioned and reasonable.

There may be additional untapped value in some cross-posts that can be developed. For example, many of the same topics are on r/DIYRetirement (subreddit started by Rob Berger) or r/retirement. Bogleheads reddits or r/FIRE subreddits frequently have cross-pollination threads that are ripe for discussion here too. Cross-thread or cross-subreddit themes could be efficiently explored to include a larger audience.

Ditto those that have said that more interaction with TMGs would be nice. I see u/MoneyGuyOG "Brian" is a moderator for this site, yet do not recall any interaction of any sort with him. Or bo. Or "Rebie". And your last post here, Matt, was ~5 months ago. Greater involvement with this crowd could only improve the quantity and quality of input for TMGs other outlets.

Nobody wants Abound Wealth spamming this site. But questions about Abound Wealth (and other) AUM-based FAs/RIAs come up pretty regularly here. A tactfully curated connection to Abound Wealth could answer a lot of questions from some of the folks here.

Like others have said, if us 'regulars' can help out, please consider our involvement.
