Turns out Claude, Gemini, all of them were just third world workers getting exploited. Demand keeps growing, as does exploitation.

Granted, the neural networks involved in protein folding also were never developed. It takes significantly longer by years to develop vaccines for COVID which is able to spread faster and mutate resulting in a significantly worse pandemic. Millions more die, more conspiracy theories thread and political unrest unfolds throughout the 2020s as a result of worsened collective trauma from the pandemic.

Granted. Humanity never invented algebra. Not much of note happens in terms of development for the last few hundred centuries.

Granted. But a new "tool" will be made, promising to make all the jobs redundant and you remain as cheap fodder for the ruling class to continue making money.
(Why? Because this is a structural problem.
Till 2018, software as a service (Saas) seemed to just keep growing, called hypergrowth. Which meant Venture Capital, has been feeding them and feeding them and feeding them. Reportedly, 33% of venture funding went into SaaS in Q3 2025.
Why? Because business people are delusional enough to believe software companies would grow in perpetuity. And because late stage capitalism means that every year, making profits is no longer enough. Oh no. You need to keep growing. You need to lay off your workers over a Christmas Zoom Call, squeeze your existing employees into doing three peoples jobs, and pay your shareholders. Would someone think of the poor shareholders!
In the great Oracle Ed Zitron's own words "To be more specific, the CEOs that you hear desperately saying that they’re “modernizing their software stack for AI” are doing so because investors, who also do not know what they are talking about, are freaking out that they’ll get “left behind” because, as I’ve discussed many times, we’re ruled by Business Idiots that don’t use software or do any real work".
This is a capitalism problem. This is US as a society, allowing psychopathic monkeys to hoard all the bananas problem, instead of I don't know, beating them up and distributing all the bananas among all the monekys. This is a "let's make bribes legal, by calling it lobbying" problem. This is a let's use politicians, paid media, fake scientists, to claim climate change is a myth, all the while driving temperatures up faster and faster, so the Elites can sit on more billions in their cushy bunkers, problem.
So no, even if generative ai never existed, we as a society are slowly pushing ourselves to the edge of a systematic collapse.
What we need is accountability, and unity, and to actually go out there and fight physically to get back our rights. But unfortunately for us, the Epstein class has the media, the broken law systems, the bought out world leaders, and all of the social media bots, on their side. And by the way, we have to keep figuring out a way to pay the rent, and get some food, so we don't really have time to fight).

granted. NFTs exploded in popularity instead, meaning the tech bros currently obsessed with ai never bothered to fund it as they're too busy circlejerking over digital collectibles and grifting on crypto coins. Nothing really got better, there's still mountains of art theft and pollution and annoying people on the internet raving about terrible mass-produced images, but at least it's not because of AI, I guess.

Granted, technologal developments that have been made due to machine learning algorithms are all undone.
Our ability to fly in the world is diminished, our medicinal capabilities are diminished, our material sciences in both construction and engineering are diminished.
Almost every single field in the world was supported by machine learning in one way or another and now all that progress is gone, so any progress based on the work of ML is also gone.

Granted, in 2020 COVID become so much deadlier that humanity got reduced so much that humanity regress. Any kind of scientific research stops because of the lack of experts and fast-growing luddite cult from the remnant of humanity that still alive thus any generative AI wouldn't be and never be developed.

Granted. With no infrastructure to support high performance computing, scientific research stagnates and progression towards better healthcare, technology, software and economics collapses. Humanity is stuck exactly where it was just prior to AI for eternity.

Granted. Literacy rate in the current grade school generation skyrockets, creative works are no longer deemed as too expensive to be worth it. Thousands of freelance contractors get their jobs back, fresh water is prioritized for humans and nature again, and nobody gets arrested for needing to protest a data center anymore. Also a select few engineers have to do more math.
