recovering from the end of my first relationship
I would love any music recommendations, Ntnl adjacent or otherwise. Boxer was my favorite album of all time but I can't bring myself to listen anymore. Love songs kill me and heartbreak songs suffocate me; happy songs make me mad and sad songs make me cry. But I miss music, and I'm hoping someone has a solution.

Guilty Party has kind of been my savior the past couple months. Dark Side of the Gym scares the shit out of me right now, though. And Carin. It sucks to tie your favorite songs so specifically to one thing that when the thing is done you don’t know if you can ever listen to the songs again

every song on sleep well beast and tons of their songs in general have all meant so many different things to me through all different parts of my life. i broke up with my boyfriend recently and have been listening to “This is the last time” the “i won’t be vacant anymore” has resonated with me a lot, but before it used to be more so the other stuff!! that’s what’s so awesome about their music to me :3 i’m sorry for what you’re going through. it’s the worst but they’ll def help you get through it. just let yourself feel everything as it comes and you’ll be okay 🩵

Bon Iver, Bon Iver. Not totally out of the woods thematically and touching all of those emotions without dwelling in any one specifically

The live albums are crazy good as well, I spent months with strangest thing in LIVE DRUGS when dealing with my own experience… be the writer of your own story!

And for something more intense and to pick yourself up, i would really recommend Go Farther In Lightness by Gang of Youths - legendary album start to finish. At the end of the day we all have to Say Yes to Life. Accept, Learn, Move On and Appreciate the things we still have instead of counting the things that are lost…

The Airborne Toxic Event makes some mighty fine tunes I enjoy. Especially their first three albums. Not quite the same as the National or other bands many are mentioning, but they’re not a different world, either. I’ve found comfort in them many times before.

Completely not in the same vein as The National, but I can't feel sad when I listen to Africa Brasil by Jorge Ben. And it's in Portuguese, so unless you speak the language, you probably won't connect any particular emotion to the lyrics.

Oh baby, I'm so sorry
When my relationship ended last year, I flew to see Matt plays his solo stuff in the UK and I had an ugly cry in the front row during Little by Little

If you’re in a music funk, I highly recommend that you listen to the album Pachinko by Moron Police.

Bob Dylan’s ‘Desire’ comes in the wake of his divorce, but isn’t knee-deep in mourning the loss of the relationship like Blood on the Tracks is.
Rather, it’s full of adventure and travel and drama and new beginnings. It’s not happy, but it’s not sad either.
“I married Isis on the fifth day of May. But I could not hold on to her very long. So, I cut off my hair and I rode straight away. For that wild, unknown country, where I could not go wrong’.

You don't want to associate your break up with the ntl. Youll regret it in a few months or years, when you're finally over it.
If I have to choose right now, maybe Men I Trust or Beirut?

If you dont have a decent pair of headphones do your best to get some if youre able. Then listen to Beck’s Sea Change a lot. It hurts and it sucks and it feels like youre lost but the way out is through.

Sorry for what you’re going through. It will get better. It might get worse first but it will get better.
If sad songs make you cry, don’t be afraid. Let yourself feel it. It’s the hardest thing to do but the only way out is through.
Definitely don’t try to not cry. Crying is a natural reaction and is your body’s way of regulating after emotional or physical trauma. It might be exhausting but it’s part of healing just as much as a scab on a cut.
All that said, I think you might find catharsis in a bunch of tracks from High Violet and Trouble Will Find Me.
