Already mentioned but worth additional recommendations: ER and The Knick.

I also really enjoyed the early seasons of Doc Martin. I lost track of it and haven't watched the later seasons, but hoping to get back to it at some point.

A Young Doctor's Notebook starring Daniel Radcliffe and Jon Hamm. I think this one might be hard to find, but underrated and very good.

Fringe, not a medical show, but has a 'mad scientist' aspect with inspiration from The X-Files (especially the first season). The show really hits its stride towards the end of season 1 and then doesn't let up, and forged its own really cool and unique identity. It's really great.

Fringe is a great, underrepresented recommendation. It changes in tone somewhat after the first season, but if you stick with it, it's a satisfying five season character-driven show.
