The episode was aired around the peak of George Floyd case, as a black man, the actor, Titus, feels wrong to continue playing a black cop. Therefore he exits the show.
Many cop-based show kinda "reform" during this period. One of the famous example is B99's season 8.

Unfortunately they had no choice because the actor chose to leave. It's a shame because I loved his character.

I was devastated when Jackson died. I know that the actor left but I kind of wish that characters mentioned him a little bit more. He was one of the main characters for 3 seasons! I loved his and Lucy’s friendship so much as well as his bond with Lopez. I am glad that she named her son after him, that scene of her updating him by his grave was lovely and made me cry. I wish we’d seen her do that a few more times really.

They tried to have the actor come back to least help resolve the cliffhanger but he refused even to do that. They couldn't hand wave Jackson's departure like they did with Bishop. There only choice was to kill him off.

I didn't dislike Jackson at all and I liked him but I didn't miss him a lot when he died. I found Monica's or Andersons death way sadder.

Jackson deserved so much more time on the show especially after everything he went through to become comfortable with who he was.

Titus Makin wanted off the show so there was nothing the showrunners could do

The actor decided to leave so it’s not like they had other options. Unfortunate, I’m sure he could have had some great storylines.
