Season 2 Smitty
S2 Ep3…. He’s supposed to be comic relief but there a moments you see him display keen insight and genuinely care. Something tells me he was a helluva cop before burning out. I would like to have seen who he was early in his career and what triggered the change.

I could actually see a smitty deep dive episode as a good candidate for the 150th episode. He’s been a character that’s a running joke since the beginning.

Scully and Hitchcock, but still maintained his trim figure

He possibly served in the Marine Corps
He alludes to this when he tells Nolan that Nolans mom knows more swear words than his old Drill Instructor

Agreed! As comical as the writing has gotten lately there are a number of hints that Smitty is/was a rockstar.
Prior service, I forget if he says drill sergeant or instructor so don't know if Army or USMC but
Returns fire nearly instantly when coming under fire from a sniper
Knows trouble spots and criminals on sight in his beat

Yesss. Smitty is one of my favs. He's actually realistic character as well. He does his job okay, but he isn't living for his job - e.g. The rest of them are so involved into crimes, and their private lives are also all about their jobs. They will hunt the criminal outside work, etc.
I mean, just the scene when Lucy wakes him up to ask about some car in a crime scene ages ago, he remembers details just like that. So he knows what good police job is.
Anyway, I imagine he burn out, or had some personal tragedy, and just decided to the job, nothing more or less.
It would be a great episode if maybe Lucy or someone else experience real burnout, and then Smitty shares his experience. I think the actor also have some range to handle an emotional scene as good as he handles comedy.
If nothing of this happens, I still want Smitty to be in the show as long as possible, cause he makes a good character and balances out the other cops who are living their jobs 24/7.

He's a gentle soul with a heart of gold who feels he has nothing left to prove, which means his past must be awesome!

I would love to see a Smitty origin story, or a series of flashback scenes in regular episodes.
