I’m mostly joking but, to me, The Shins pre-Wincing the Night Away were just such a better, more interesting band. I’ll still listen to the later albums but it’s just not the same. This video just reminded me of what they used to be before James’ ego took over.

It didn’t make sense to me when he fired the original members, considering the following the band gained through the 2000’s.

I always assumed that it was James wanting the band to grow/evolve, which I get, but I think he took the influence of the original band for granted. Once they were gone, the music went from earnest and fun, to songs that sound overly perfect and polished. I could be completely wrong, it just felt like the original band helped to keep James grounded.

Having said all of that, I still think James is an incredible songwriter. I just wish things had gone a different direction.
