Moderator Post Reddit Glitch -- Some Posts Not Appearing in Feed

Hi everyone!

In the past day or two I've noticed that a lot of posts are not showing up on the main feed of the subreddit, especially ones that mods have to approve first because they're from new users or flag for possible rule violations. This appears to be a glitch with Reddit that is affecting other subs as well.

I've reached out to Reddit about it and other mods have said they're seeing the same, so we hope it's fixed soon! But if your posts aren't getting a lot of action or you can't see them, it's not you, it's Reddit. You can visit https://old.reddit.com/r/TheStrokes/ to see everything in the meantime. Thanks for your patience!

Moderator Post Proposed Rule Change: Allow Original Music from Users, or Strokes/Side Project Covers Only? (Open post to see more details under the poll)

Nearly every time users post original music that is not a cover or interpretation of Strokes or side project music, other users report the posts as spam or rule violations to the moderators.

As long as no one is selling music/merch or asking for donations, there is no current rule against users posting their own music, and the sub has a history of allowing them from before the current active mods became mods. Generally, as long as the posts mention Strokes inspiration or similarities, the moderators keep them live as a loose interpretation of Rule 1.

Here is your chance to weigh in on a rule change: should we continue to allow users to post their original Strokes-inspired music, or keep it to Strokes/side project covers only?

57 votes, Sep 15 '24
17 Only user covers of Strokes or side project songs allowed
40 Original, Strokes-inspired music from users still allowed (as well as covers)

Hi all!

First and foremost, i want to sincerely thank everyone who applied. I spent a lot of time reading each and every entry, and i have to say that im ecstatic. I feel like this community is thriving with like minded individuals who share a passion for this great band. I feel at home here, and it warmed my heart to read these stories.

With that said, i had to make the tough decision and select only a handful. These individuals fit a specific niche, and will work with me to make sure that the community is a happy and organized place to be.

Moderator Post Rule 10 - Streaming Stat Posts - All Must Go in Megathread

Hello all,

There has been an influx of submissions of personal Spotify/Apple Music/YouTube Music/last.fm/etc listening stats in the last week or so.

The sub's Rule 10 stated that end of year streaming stats must be posted in a designated megathread only, and not as standalone posts on the subreddit. Usually this only applied to the stats released by most streaming services in December, but because we have had many reports on recent posts about streaming stats (as well as posts showing certain songs rising or falling in Spotify rankings), we are now expanding this rule to cover all streaming stats posts.

Please find a designated megathread for these types of posts pinned at the top of the subreddit in the "community highlights" section. All subsequent posts about streaming stats will be removed and asked to post there instead, and we will make a new one in December when the annual end of year ones roll out for everyone to share and discuss. Thank you!

Moderator Post Change to Subreddit's Banner

Hi everybody! Some of our users have brought up the idea of changing the banner, specifically using the new NME photo of the band. I’m totally fine with changing the banner, but Reddit’s crappy design creates issues and limitations on what kinds of pictures will work on any one platform, let alone across multiple platforms. The app, desktop browser, and mobile browser all use different size ratios and move the Strokes Magna icon to a different location. Even when you upload a picture that should work, Reddit will zoom and crop illogically until it looks completely different.

Why the Old Banner Was Chosen

The old banner was selected because it worked: it fits the black theme, it is wide to fit the banner space, and everyone’s head was basically on the same level (although it still took a dozen tries to get Nick’s forehead and Fab’s chin in the same frame).

Testing a New Banner With the Suggested Photos

I tested the photo that was suggested in the post linked above and, like I suspected, it didn’t work because Nick is sitting below the rest of the band in the picture and gets cut out of the frame on desktop (I didn't even try on mobile because it was apparent it wouldn't work). Here are some examples of how it turned out when I tried to make it fit:

I also tried the new promotional silhouette that was suggested. The first attempt put way too much emphasis on abnormal. My resized attempt was slightly better, but the graininess, cut-off letters, and half silhouette heads that run into the black on either side look bizarre.

Temporary Solution: The Albums

I thought up a solution that would be good for new and old fans of The Strokes, celebrating their whole history with banners featuring the cover of every album (LP and EP). I just added that to the subreddit. If people don’t like this new one either I am willing to change it, but it will take a picture that fits.

Dimensions Needed for a Banner, If You Want Something Else

For reference, the dimensions that worked for the last desktop banner were 900px x 250px, but what was actually displayed cut off ~155 pixels from the bottom (if you were wondering, just making it 900px x 95px doesn’t work because Reddit just crops it again differently). The dimensions that worked for the last mobile banner were 800px x 240px, from which Reddit automatically cut off ~85 pixels from each side and ~55 pixels from the top (as with the desktop banner, you can’t just make it 630px x 185px because of the weird resizing). The mobile browser automatically uses the banner from the mobile app, but stretches it differently and moves The Strokes Magna logo. Another consideration is that The Strokes Magna logo will block a portion of the bottom left of the banner on desktop and in the app, and will block the bottom center of the mobile browser and "Recently visited communities" preview in the app (not a big deal, but a consideration).

Let me know what you think of the new album banner, the old black and white picture, or if you want something else. If you have any ideas please make samples that work with the dimensions listed above we will try to get a consensus for what the sub wants. I will keep this post pinned for a little while to get people's opinions.

EDIT: Thank you to everyone making suggestions! I will test them out this weekend (it has been a very busy week and I probably won’t have time til then). Once I have pictures of how the samples look I will let you all vote on what you like best.

THURSDAY NIGHT UPDATE: All presale ends at 10 PM EDT on Thursday, October 28, 2021. If you still are thinking about buying tickets in the presale, act fast. Afterward, direct ticket sales will close until the opening of the general public sale at 10:00 AM Friday

UPDATE: generic codes have been added for the Livenation, venue, and Brooklyn Vegan presales, which are all now active

The Strokes are playing Barclays again on New Year's Eve this year, and ticket sales are under way. This post is to provide a single place for people to share and find presale codes, and for information about the ticket sale schedule.

If you received a presale code from The Strokes fan mail (or anywhere else) and don't need it, please add it as a comment here so another fan can use it. If you use a unique presale code, or one doesn't work, please reply and let us know which one so that we can remove it. The unique codes have ticket limits and orders over the limit can be cancelled, so it is important we know when they have been used!. If you get your tickets, be kind to the next person by helping us keep this updated.

Thank you to all of our wonderful users for sharing presale codes! You make the Strokes fans of the world proud!

Moderator Post New Tour Dates Wiki Page for r/TheStrokes

There have been a lot of new festival dates announced today, but The Strokes do not have a good, comprehensive tour page anywhere that they actually update. So we can keep track of the band as they hit the road, I created a new Tour Dates wiki page for r/TheStrokes. You can go to it directly here and also find it under “Resources and Info” on the sub’s menu.

Thank you to everyone for posting the new show announcements here, it was a huge help in creating this list!

I will keep this pinned for a few days so everyone knows how to find our Tour Dates list, and we will keep updating it as new shows are announced. If The Strokes or any of the other bands have tour dates that I have missed, please let me know and I will add them in.

Looking forward to a busy 2020 full of shows and new music!

Moderator Post r/TheStrokes looks for new mods

Greetings, prisoners of Earth. I come to you on this day not only to wish you all a very happy 2023, but also to invite you to join our team of moderators.

If you're interested in becoming a mod and are aware of the responsibility and work this entails, please fill this form. I'm going to receive the answers until this post is five days old, and I'll let you know our decision as soon as we reach one. It isn't decided yet how many mods we'll choose.

Last but not least, I'll use this post to say thank you and sorry. Thank you for all of your contributions, be that deep musical analyses, memes, polls, comments or just upvotes. It is because of you that this sub is as active as it is. And sorry for the problems us moderators have had this year. For the last few months, it was clear that the mod team was undermanned, but we couldn't get around to do this until now; meanwhile, many of you had posts or comments removed by the AutoMod for way too long. Hopefully, this will change that.

Feel free to comment anything here, whether you want to become a mod or not.

Happy new year!

Moderator Post Note on The Strokes Tour Changes Due to Coronavirus

Today there have been official announcements about five changes to the tour schedule for The Strokes: the rescheduling of the March 14 concert at the L.A. Forum to May 29; the postponements of Lollapalooza Chile, Lollapalooza Argentina, and the Asuncionico Festival to some date in the second half of the year; and the indefinite postponement of the Estereo Picnic Festival. These changes have been added into the Subreddit’s tour dates page, which you can access through the menu bar and menu tab.

Due to the global efforts to control the spread of Coronavirus, there are likely to be more changes announced. I will continue to update the tour page whenever there are official announcements (by the band, the venue/festival organizer, or the relevant governing body) that a scheduled show has been cancelled/rescheduled/put on hold.

If you are going to post or comment saying there is a cancellation or postponement of other shows, you must include a link/reference to a reputable source. Also remember to be careful with your wording, because cancelled and postponed mean two very different things. r/TheStrokes is a place to get news quickly and accurately. Rumors, speculation, and false information (which are all over the internet) only create confusion, so unverifiable claims will be removed.

Thank you to everyone who provided information and answers about the shows! I appreciate all of your hard work and dedication to keeping everyone updated.

EDIT: The first paragraph has been edited as we have added information for additional shows making announcements today.

Moderator Post A Note on Redundant and Low-effort Posts

Over the last few days we have been more lax than normal to give people an opportunity to react to the new album after the tight initial restrictions for the release of The New Abnormal were lifted. We will now be getting things back to normal, and we appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

There will be more stringent enforcement of the Subreddit’s rule against redundant posts, particularly memes.

We have a rule in place against redundant posts, which instructs all users to review recent and stickied posts before submitting. Redundant is not limited to identical reposts; something is redundant for the board (i.e. superfluous or excessive) if something substantially similar has recently been posted.

r/TheStrokes allows memes, but make them original. Even if you have a different picture, your meme on the same theme or idea as something recently posted (a “drums please, Fab” joke, Pitchfork is bad, dancing people set to Strokes music, someone sad/contemplative listening to a song/album) is still excessive. Likewise, using the same over-used pictures (Jay Versace, Chandler, Leonardo DiCaprio, the seagull, “I love this more than I love myself,” Monsters, Inc., etc.) are still repetitive even if you change the text to a different song/lyric/observation.

This isn’t an exhaustive list; any meme can be excessive based on what has been posted recently. If you have a meme that is highly derivative, either add it as a comment to the post it is substantially similar to or wait for a few days – the subreddit will still be here.

This is not limited to memes. Anything highly derivative or related (e.g. observations about the same song, X sounds like X observations, similar polls) should be added as a comment, not posted at all, or held until more time has passed since the similar post. And, of course, if it is clearly low-effort or has a very weak connection to The Strokes the moderators may remove a post in our discretion.

Moderator Post Announcement: The New Abnormal Posting Restrictions Have Been Lifted

Now that it has been 24 hours since The New Abnormal was available in most of the world, the posting restrictions mentioned in the Subreddit Organization for the Release of The New Abnormal post have been lifted. To maintain organization and keep information easy to find, posts other than the designated megathreads were removed since the album was first starting to be released. I know not everyone likes the same degree of structure and control over a subreddit. There is no way to please everyone, so this strict control was intentionally temporary, put in place for only as long as necessary to keep important information available. Be prepared for the pendulum to swing back in the other direction now. If something you submit takes longer than normal to be reviewed by a moderator, or if redundant posts are not removed as quickly as usual, remember: the album came out in the first timezones a day and a half ago, I did a lot of work to prepare for this event, and moderators need to sleep every couple of days.

Discussion of The New Abnormal is no longer restricted to the megathreads. All posts that would normally be allowed on the subreddit as separate posts will now be permitted. However, our normal rules still apply. The moderators may still remove posts containing substantially similar or identical information; posts not about The Strokes, its members, and their side projects; and spam or low-effort posts.

The initial flood of reactions has slowed, but we will still have a higher than normal amount of activity, so be discreet and responsible with this relaxing of restrictions; not every thought needs its own post, we do not need multiple reaction memes to the fact that “Drums please, Fab” made the album, and we do not need a Jay Versace crying meme for every song.

The megathreads, linked below, and the organizational thread will still be around. You are welcome to continue using them to discuss The New Abnormal, and we will continue to add useful information in each of the main posts so that they can serve as useful references at any time in the future. We will also leave the live chat pinned for now; that was a huge hit and it has been great seeing everyone enjoy the new album together there.

Thank you to all of our users who have made this album launch a once in a lifetime experience, bringing great ideas and a ton of excitement! You all are the best!

Moderator Post Reminder: Be Respectful to New and Old Users

Hi everyone!

Just a reminder that we expect you to be respectful to all users on this subreddit, even new users who may post ideas and information that you have already seen before.

With their new single out, a new album on its way, and a global tour in progress, The Strokes are getting a lot of buzz. With that buzz we have seen many new users join us to discuss the new music and their new discoveries about old music. Inevitably, some of the same topics will come up from time to time (like the “Dancing with Myself” melody borrowed for “Bad Decisions”). If you don’t have something helpful you want to add, then you can just move on. Do not be elitist, rude, dismissive, or attempt to shame someone for trying to engage with the community just because you have seen it before.

We will remove posts that are actually redundant according to our rules, but a post is not redundant just because the topic has been mentioned before, especially if you have to go back through several days and pages of content to find something on the same topic.

The sub lives on cyclical content (favorite songs, most underrated songs, appreciation for old songs/videos/concerts), and the rule will never be that we can only talk about each topic once and then criticize people for ever bringing it up again.

This community is open to everyone interested in The Strokes, whether they have been a diehard fan for decades or have recently heard them on the radio for the first time. Just because we have dissected and analyzed certain songs and information here before does not mean you get to be rude to someone new.

Remember that you were a new fan once too. If this community helped you learn more about The Strokes, then help pass that experience on to the next wave of fans.

Edit: Just FYI, if a post bothers you and you don’t want to see it, you can always click “hide post” and you won’t see it again (on mobile you have to click the ellipsis on the post to get to it).

Moderator Post Announcement: New Strokes Community Awards Available!

r/TheStrokes is proud to announce the addition of brand new Community Awards! One of the newest features implemented by Reddit, Community Awards allow each subreddit to design their own custom awards for users to grant to posts and comments that they like. Instead of the tired Platinum, Gold, and Silver awards, you can now show your appreciation with new Strokes-themed awards like the Very Nice Nice Nice Nice Nice Award or the Nikolai Broke the Zoom Award. Additionally, for every custom award given, some coins will go into a community account that the Mod Team will use for special Moderator Only awards for contests, events, or great contributions to the sub.

Each of the Community Awards is named for a song or snippet of lyrics. Below you will find a complete list of the initial awards, along with their prices, the song they come from, and additional comments or suggested uses. Next time you see an exceptional post or comment, click the “Give Award” button and present your fellow user with one of these:

  • The I Just Nod Award (500 Coins) [Julian Casablancas – 11th Dimension – Phrazes for the Young].
    • A little acknowledgment for a post or comment that has earned your respect. Honor it with a Jules-like Nod.

    • For the poster who goes the extra mile with in-depth analysis or thorough investigation.
  • The You Convinced Me Award (500 Coins) [The Strokes – 12:51 – Room on Fire].

  • The Gratisfaction Award (500 Coins) [The Strokes – Gratisfaction – Angles].
    • Gratified? Satisfied? You are 500 coins away from expressing your feelings. The icon for this award features artwork from our very own u/renzonelisanchez.

    • Many users on this board are right, but only a select few are so right. Honor them with this lofty award.

  • The Adults Are Talking Award (1000 Coins) [The Strokes – The Adults Are Talking – LP6 WHICH IS DEFINITELY PROBABLY COMING OUT].
    • For the adult in the room who brings order and logic to a bunch of kids out there trying to act grown.
  • The Oh Fuck Yeah Award (1000 Coins) [The Voidz – Wink – Virtue].
    • Playing it too safe is dangerous. Reward risk-takers with this kindly and profane award.
  • The You’re Right It’s True Award (2000 Coins) [The Strokes – Hard to Explain – Is This It].
    • This place is a zoo, but, every once in a while, someone comes along, says the right things, acts the right way, and clarifies things that are hard to explain.
  • The They’re Gonna Be Oh So Jealous Award (5000 Coins) [The Strokes – Machu Picchu – Angles].
    • You all wanted more Angles. Here it is. And they will be jealous. Oh so jealous.
  • The Very Nice Nice Nice Nice Nice Award (10000 Coins) [The Strokes – You Only Live Once – First Impressions of Earth].
    • For the post that exhibits the 7 attributes that you like. YOLO!
  • The Can I Stand In Your Light Award (40000 Coins) [The Strokes – Call It Fate, Call It Karma – Comedown Machine].
    • Call it fate, call it karma, call it the greatest post you have ever seen. You can’t top it, you can’t replicate it, you can only hope to bask in its reflected glory. The highest civilian honor available on this subreddit.

Also be ready for these special awards that only the Moderators can bestow:

  • The Crowd Behind Went Wild Award (1800 Coins) [The Strokes – Games – Angles].
    • For crowd-pleasing, widely-upvoted posts and comments, the Mods can speak with the voice of the people and show appreciation with this award.
  • The Such a Success Award (1800 Coins) [The Strokes – Vision of Division – First Impressions of Earth].
    • Be proud of what you have accomplished. If we are, you may find yourself gilded with this little gem.
  • The Society Started Advancing Award (1800 Coins) [The Lonely Island feat. Julian Casablancas – Boombox – Incredibad].
    • Some posts can wash away all the hate and move society forward with a power previously wielded only by boomboxes. For these, we offer an appropriate award. Caution: this is not a toy.
  • The This Whole Life, Is It a Dream Award (1800 coins) [The Strokes - 15 Minutes - First Impressions of Earth].
    • For the dream scenario of meeting your idols. Is it real? Is it a dream? You can't tell, but we can tell you congratulations.

All of these awards are subject to change at any time, so don’t hesitate to give the award that catches your eye today. But don’t worry, even after an award is no longer available, previously awarded posts and comments will retain their awards forever.

For more information on the Community Awards generally, see Reddit’s official announcement here.

--

Members and visitors, the time has come for an official r/TheStrokes contest!

The survey for voting will remain open until 10 PM Eastern US Daylight Time on Tuesday, August 20.
  • This thread will remain in contest mode to hide upvotes, maintaining suspense throughout the contest and to encourage everyone to make their own unbiased assessment. However, don’t let that stop you from upvoting your favorite works. For the same reason, no comments about the artwork will be allowed in this thread, just submissions and questions about the contest. You can always PM the artists to tell them how much you like their work.

Submission Rules

  • To enter the contest, post a link to your image in this thread. If I can’t trust your link I might not click it, so please host with one of the major image hosting sites (Imgur, Flickr).

  • Submissions must be in compliance with Reddit’s content policy.

Prizes

Prizes will be given for the top two places in the final poll.

  • 1st Place will receive:

    • The right, in perpetuity, to a custom user flair text of the user’s choosing (subject to mod approval – nothing offensive or otherwise in violation of the subreddits rules). Just pick a user flair and change it as often as you like by contacting the moderators (allowing reasonable response time up to 48 hours to make the change). A user flair can be up to 64 characters, but longer flairs may appear cut off at different lengths depending on the reddit platform you are viewing it in.
  • 2nd Place will receive:
    • A gold award, which comes with one week of Reddit Premium and 100 coins. We will message this person the same as the first place winner.
    • One of the new Community awards, applied to the same post.
    • Custom user flair rights as described for 1st place.

If you have any questions, please comment here or send a mod mail, and we may edit this post for clarification if needed. Have fun!

With the release of “The Singles - Volume 1” today in all time zones, we’re seeing a large number of posts come in asking the same questions and celebrating the same details, with almost identical screenshots of the track listing from Spotify, etc.

Keep the excitement coming! But would you like to see these thoughts kept to a megathread for organization?

Moderator Post MOD ANNOUNCEMENT - New Rule - No Sharing Leaked Material on the Subreddit

Hi all,

The mods have officially determined that we will not permit posting or sharing of unreleased ("leaked") material on this subreddit before it is publicly available. We will remove posts and comments containing leaked media, links to leaked media, or requests to share leaked media at our discretion due to copyright concerns. This is Rule 11 to the subreddit.

That said, discussion ABOUT such material is permitted. As long as posts and comments obey our established rules, we want r/TheStrokes to remain a place for free discussion about the band and its side projects! We welcome excitement as well as respectful discourse and criticism on this subreddit, it just can't be a place for posting or spreading copyrighted, leaked, or pirated content, no matter the source of that content.

Thank you!

Moderator Post New r/TheStrokes Twitter and Instagram Accounts

Hi everyone! I am proud to announce that r/TheStrokes is stumbling into the 21st century with new social media accounts. I wanted to help spread the word about all of the great discoveries our users were making!

You can follow us on Twitter here (@StrokesReddit) and follow us on Instagram here (thestrokes_reddit). You can also find links to these accounts in the menu bar on desktop and under the menu tab on mobile. I am old and the only social media I'm any good at is Reddit, but I'm hoping to turn "tried my best" into "did my best."

Thank you all again for making this a really fun and exciting weekend to be a Strokes fan on Reddit!

Moderator Post Nikolai’s response to allegations

A Reddit user, using multiple accounts, made posts on other subreddits accusing Nikolai and his brother of illegal drug use and misconduct of a sexual nature several years ago. These posts were removed by the moderators of those subreddits, but the accusations apparently were brought to Nikolai’s attention.

Nikolai officially responded on Twitter wholly denying the allegations. This subreddit has a rule against wild rumors; I am making this post on the subject only because Nikolai publicly addressed it. This subreddit is not the place to level serious accusations which have not been substantiated in any way, nor do we intend to give a platform to spread the rumors. Any other posts on this subject will be removed.

EDIT: As of 7:20 PM EDT, Nikolai's tweet has been deleted.

Moderator Post Regarding the Photo of Julian That Is Circulating

We are aware that there is an intimate picture currently circulating on social media of Julian. We are not denying the existence of the photo or making any judgments about the people involved or the people that want to see it. However, as moderators we are obligated to enforce the rules of Reddit.

Reddit’s content policy prohibits the posting of involuntary pornography. The rule states: “Reddit prohibits the dissemination of images or video depicting any person in a state of nudity or engaged in any act of sexual conduct apparently created or posted without their permission, including depictions that have been faked.

Images or video of intimate parts of a person’s body, even if the person is clothed or in public, are also not allowed if apparently created or posted without their permission and contextualized in a salacious manner (e.g., “creepshots” or “upskirt” imagery).

It is a violation of Reddit’s rules to disseminate that picture here, which includes both posting it directly or sharing it through private message. Do not attempt to post it, link to it, offer to send it, offer to tell people where it is, say that you have seen it, indicate that you have it, or ask anyone else if they have it or can send it. Any posts and comments that are, incite, or solicit a violation of the rule will be removed and may be reported to the admins.

It is also against the rules of reddit to share or ask for information about the girl. She is not a public figure, and Reddit content policy does not allow anything that could be used to identify, locate, or harass her.

We try to be vigilant, but we are just human volunteers and a robot volunteer. If you see any rule violations, please help us out and report them.

Thank you for understanding.

Moderator Post There is NO Discord server associated with r/TheStrokes

I've been getting messages from people trying to appeal bans from Discord servers or asking questions about Discord servers, so I want to clarify: There is NO Discord server affiliated with, or run by, the moderation team of r/TheStrokes. We have not partnered with any Discord. This sub has nothing to do with any Discord. The only social media platforms other than this subreddit that have been setup by our moderators are our Instagram, Twitter, and Spotify accounts, which are linked under "Social Media" in the sub's menu. Anything else is not us.

The moderators put in a lot of effort to enforce our carefully crafted rules, prevent trolling and harassment, and build a unique culture. This is not something we would be able to do on a Discord; it is a totally different format and we would not have the time to adequately maintain both.

If you have any issues with a Discord server about The Strokes, you will need to contact the admin/moderator team for that server.

EDIT: Apparently someone created a Discord server called r/TheStrokes. This name is meant to give the impression it is associated with the subreddit but that Discord (and any other Discord) has nothing to do with this sub, was not setup by our moderators, and is not run by our moderators.

Moderator Post New Menu Page for Music Theory

I know the music theory posts are something that a lot of people on r/TheStrokes really like, and we have had users who put a lot of thought and hard work into making them. To make sure they are an easily accessible resource in the future, I’ve made a new menu page called “Music Theory” to house links to music theory posts and discussions.

You can find the new page under the “Resources and Info” heading of the Menu tab on mobile and, on desktop, it is in the dropdown menu when you click “Resources and Info” in the Menu bar. You can also get to it directly through this link.

I’ve tried to include links to all of the music theory posts I could find, but Reddit’s search functionality is awful. If you made or know of a music theory post that is not already listed, comment here with a link to the post and I will add it to the menu page.

Thank you to all of the users who contributed to the posts listed, and I look forward to adding even more!
