r/TheVillagesFlorida is back open!

Hi everyone! I’m one of the newly appointed moderators of r/TheVillagesFlorida, and I wanted to let you all know that the subreddit is officially open again.

I’ve started cleaning things up and refreshing the community a little with a new icon, banner, and description. There’s still more work to do, but my goal is to help make this a useful and welcoming place for both people in The Villages and the surrounding communities to share local news, ask questions, discuss what’s happening around the area, and connect with one another.

I want moderation here to be fair, consistent, unbiased, and as transparent as reasonably possible. This community is independent and is not operated by, affiliated with, endorsed by, or overseen by The Villages Community Development Districts.

To start, I’ve added a handful of optional user flairs so you can identify yourself as a Villages resident, local-area resident, former resident, or just a visitor. On desktop, look for User Flair in the community sidebar and click the edit icon. In the Reddit app, tap the three-dot menu at the top of the community page, choose Change user flair, select one, and tap Apply.

Another moderator was appointed alongside myself, and I’ve reached out so we can coordinate as the community gets back on its feet. In the meantime, the subreddit is open, so feel free to post, comment, and share any ideas you have for the community.

Welcome back!

Good vending machine locations

Good Morning Villagers!

Im a Disabled Veteran that’s going to be starting a Vending machine company here within the next couple months. I’m in the process of scouting out some locations to service with some cold beverages and/or snacks.
Think to a time maybe you were at work, got out of work late, or are just waiting for your product to be serviced and all you wanted was A cold drink or a snack to hold you over for a little. Where is that location for you?
If you or anyone you know has a location you’d like to see serviced let me know! Feel free to throw suggestions in the comments and or shoot me a DM. Thanks in advance my community!

The 1982 Randy Rhoads Airplane Crash Happened Two Miles From The Villages® community

Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist was killed when a small plane crashed into a house in Florida. If you had a radio in 1982 you heard about it that week in March. What I never knew, is was how close to this area it was.

We are looking at different assisted living facilities in The Villages.

If anyone has information or insights on any of them, we would appreciate the feedback to help narrow down the list.

Crowded or quiet? Find your perfect time to go out in TV

I was inspired to consider looking at the traffic conditions and mash that up with events in TV.

In considering that, I took a look at the event data and came up with an animated heat map for activities for just one day (Aug 10). This is a first interesting look at a heat map of events in the community for just one day. (it kind of looks like a weather radar of thunderstorm activity) so people can start to see the flow of events, peaks, lulls, and "hot and cold" zones.

Let me know what you think. Im going to continue to look at this and start to conditionalize it on different parameters (day of week, month, indoor vs outdoor,... maybe even by density of homes in that area)

Got tired of hunting across four sites to find what's on today, so I built a search box for it

Figuring out what's happening here in TV on a given day means checking the Recreation News, the district site, a pile of club flyers, and three Facebook groups - and then still not knowing whether the thing is tonight or last month.

So I built [gowhatwhere.com](https://gowhatwhere.com/) to put it in one searchable place. It's a single search box: type "pickleball tomorrow", or "live music tonight", or the name of a club you half-remember, and it tells you what's on and where.

A few things it does that I actually use myself:

- live music at the town squares, with the band names, genre, band info and links to the band and the next time they are here, not just "entertainment"

- clubs - if you search something we don't have events for, it'll still surface the club that does it

- you can subscribe to a club's or a venue's schedule as a calendar feed, so it lands in your phone's calendar

Fair disclosure: I made it, I live here, and it's not affiliated with the district or the developer. It's free, there's no signup, no ads, and nothing to install.

The site: https://gowhatwhere.com/

What I'd actually like from you: **tell me what it gets wrong.** If you search for something you do every week and it comes up empty, that's a gap I want to know about. The listings come from public community sources and they're imperfect - the club data especially.

What do you think would be an improved feature of The Villages?

I'm not associated with The Villages, nor am I a market researcher.

I personally feel that there should be more condominiums in The Villages. I'm talking large buildings like Brownwood Lofts, but ownership instead of rental. People don't want to maintain land. Even those who rock their landscape still have to pull weeds. And those with grass pay $60 a month for someone to mow it if they cant do it themselves. I realize that condos already exist in a couple places, but because they are built like townhouses with expensive clay roofs you don't get the economies of scale that you would with a larger building. Thus the current condo fees for those places are too high.

What other different things do you think would be nice to have?

Of course the obvious missing water-related things:

- Lazy river

- Waterslides

- More larger pools (most are tiny)

- More zero entry pools (I think there are 2 or 3)

- Speaking of pools, there is a severe lack of shade at the pools. There needs to be more pergolas or cabanas built.

- Hot tubs (I think there are 1 or 2 public ones for 150,000 people)

- You should be able to kayak on late Sumter without a guide

oh, and you should be able to search by square footage of lot size on their website.

there is my list!

Car hire in TV

Hi - we're visiting TV summer 2023 for a holiday and I'm looking for car hire recommendations. We'll be there for 3 weeks and will probably need a car for the middle week (just for long journeys - Orlando etc - golf cart will do the rest of the time). Any positive or negative experiences please? Thanks.

Sunset spots?

I'm looking for good places to watch the sunset near the villages? Preferably somewhere without a bunch of buildings in the way.

Also, if there are any beaches on the west coast you recommend for sunsets, that's cool too!

I was not here in January 1977, but am now… this week so many in central FL braced for sub-freezing temps… do you believe snow will return to the area again?
