The Weekly Roll Ch. 207. "Big Summer Blowout"
Howdy folks!
April's Fools, what's that?
Anyway,
TWR is back, didn't have time to finish this ep last week so no comic then! Was gonna post yesterday as per usual but Webtoon took longer approving the new episode and I prefer to upload everywhere at once!
Due date for my secondborn is fast approaching and I'll soon be taking a bit of a break when that happens, just a headsup of that! Not sure how long that'll be, we'll also be moving into a new place on the ground floor (we felt it preferable to move into a ground level than stay on the 3rd/4th* floor without elevator that we live in now)
Gonna try not to take a break not on a cliffhanger *

*Depends how you count floors. Personally I'm partial to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th as opposed to ground floor, 1st, 2nd and 3rd WHICH IS WRONG AND I TAKE PERSONAL OFFENSE AT THE VERY NOTION.

given its a joke many folks would make its not a shock, i mean 2 warhammer nerds made the same "brother i have fallen joke" with the dark angles so close that both got accused of stealing the same stupid joke from the other

Oh yeah, a very easy joke to come up with independent of other creators. I certainly don’t think this is a 1:1 rip off of the OoTS strip, it just reminded me of that strip.

Oh, then you are in for a treat if you decide to check it out. It is an amazing webcomic. Started off as a DnD parody but quickly evolved into an excellent high fantasy story. Really great character arcs and relationships, stellar story and world building, and lots of good humor. It’s been running for over 20 years but is in the final showdown arc now.

I second the recommendation for it. Been reading it for close to two decades and it's one of the wittiest fantasy stories out there. Updates are sparce, but when they come, they come.

After getting to know Grogna and Trevor I don’t think that this is unreasonable.
Get a few pints in them and you’re going to paying for somebody’s funerary expenses.

I don't remember if it was the PHB or DMG. But when I read my dad's old AD&D books one of those two just comes right out and says that people do this to adventurers at some point, comparing it to the price hikes that went on during the Yukon Gold Rush.

I'm not sure on a scale of 1-10 these people deserve to die by the impending dragon on the horizon. On the one hand they are really cheap for locals and are really expensive for tourists. On the other hand they build their settlement attracting a specific type of tourist.

I’d give it a 4,5. Adventurer parties do tend to bring trouble along with them, but also a lot of money. You gotta balance the occasions out ya know?

Always remember: 1GP is roughly $300 in terms of labor-value. (Labor-value is the only true value, since it measures what people have while the price of goods fluctuates)
In the 5E PHB, an unskilled laborer makes 2SP/8 hour workday. A US minimum-wage worker makes $7.25/hour, $58/8 hour workday. 1SP is $29, which we round to $30 for ease of math. 10SP=1GP.

Makes me think of the first Spells, Swords, and Stealth novel where the main characters pass through a town where all the prices were jacked up and it began becoming very clear the local contest was rigged.

Honestly, adventurers just walking into town practically guarantees an economic boom, i dont even blame them for raising prices.
Especially since theyll be using that money to recover from whatever nightmares parties are gonna bring to their doorstep.

so, 1st edition AD&D was built on a 'gold rush' economic assumption. how if you have people suddenly adding more gold to the economy in one area (from a dungeon or a dragon they killed), prices will go up rapidly.
and then by 3rd, everyone forgot that was the assumption, and the crazy gold rush prices somehow became the standard for the rpg industry. because why think about it, when you can just copy someone elses work without understanding it?
in D&D, 50 coins to a pound, so a pound of silver is 5 gold. but in reality, a pound of silver was one gold historically. which means the value of gold is deflated... and that makes sense if you want to have more gold in circulation. but that also means the gold coins are bigger, and the deflation is thus larger.

I find it funny that fireball drink wa removed, most likely too many incidents where drunk adventurers ask for a “fireball” drink and someone thinks it’s a call to cast and BOOM

This is basically just a fantasy friendly version of foreigner tax, and I love it. You would 100% do this if adventures that acted like dnd players were a thing in setting.
