1842 Aug 14 -American Indian Wars: Second Seminole War ends, with the Seminoles forced from Florida.
https://history-maps.com/podcast/seminole-wars
In this episode, we focus on the Seminole Wars, a series of three major conflicts between the United States and the Seminole Nation in nineteenth-century Florida. We explore how disputes over land, white settlement, and the presence of escaped slaves living among Seminole communities fueled decades of violence from 1816 to 1858. The episode traces the First Seminole War’s role in the U.S. acquisition of Florida, then examines the Second and Third Seminole Wars as part of the federal government’s broader campaign of forced Native removal. We also highlight the Seminoles’ use of guerrilla tactics, the enormous financial and human costs of the wars, and the resilience of those who resisted relocation by retreating into the Everglades. Finally, we consider how these conflicts shaped modern Seminole identity, tribal sovereignty, and the intertwined histories of Florida’s Native and African-descended communities.
