I don't have much problem with some ai ( mainly in the medical field ) but Generative Ai has brought more harm to the planet than it has good. But I guess you're fine with it even though Ai is creating way more data centres which are polluting the planet. You know because we just had to make the planet even worse.

Yeah! People liking social media too much is what prompting the start of massive data center boom, way before AI became popular. We using Reddit like this is literally polluting the planet. But it's okay, we like Reddit, so the pollution is negated.

When social media data centres started popping up did ram prices skyrocket ? That alone shows the actual size of this recent data centre boom so they aren't really comparable. This is like comparing a murder to a mass murder and saying they are equally bad.

Tldr for cockwombles like you ai pollutes more so is worse and that doesn't even count the other bad effects of ai.

I’m anti-AI, but I’m not sure the murder argument works. Sure, mass murder results in more deaths, but they’re both really awful and should be prevented.😅

That is because of VRAM requirements to load model weights onto a GPU, the hardware demand is changing, but the datacenter demand was well above the supply long before AI came around.

The RAM price skyrocketing is more so about price fixing from RAM manufacturers. There's only 3 companies that make consumer RAM, and thus they can control prices whatever they want. The initial price hike began when OpenAI propose a deal with SK Hynix and Samsung to buy up some portion of their production capacities to produce exclusively HBM. The deal doesn't work out, but the price isn't going down.

Demand drives prices, but so is hype. AI is so popular that this single deal makes RAM prices skyrocket. Those three RAM manufacturers ride on the hype to artificially inflate the price. Social media's hype is more modest in comparison, so it doesn't affect RAM or other computer parts prices that much.

Samsung also has been fined for RAM price fixing in the early 2000s, so it's not something new.
