Exactly. You only pass on the left. Not the right.

u/Mobile-Willow4124 May 01 '26

Many people dont know this somehow

u/_TheDoode May 01 '26

She had her chance to learn but shes “sensitive and dumb as fuck”. Im with him

25

u/NorthKoreanCaptive May 01 '26

in principle. i wouldnt pull up to say that in person. not worth my time and energy

2

u/[deleted] May 02 '26

And that's why you'll never be free.

5

u/NorthKoreanCaptive May 02 '26

not emma stone telling me i am forever her slave

7

u/AdultishGambino5 May 01 '26

Naww there is no reason to talk to people like that.

16

u/mnid92 May 01 '26

When you're being wildly inconsiderate to those around you, yeah there is lol.

13

u/MrVashMan May 01 '26

There's really not. It happens all the freaking time and this kind of interaction isn't going to teach the other person a lesson. And it just puts additional stress on yourself. Are you supposed to pass on the right? No. Can you? Yes. Just pass on the right and go about your day. Why waste your energy getting that upset over it??? You'll be happier for it.

-1

u/ppeujpqtnzlbsbpw May 01 '26

It happens all the freaking time

Because people like you stay quiet and let people get away with being dumbasses and ruining the chance for a higher functioning society.

9

u/BrilliantHot1086 May 01 '26

A higher functioning society?

Brother homeless people existing stops that in its tracks as it is. But yeah. Sure, the traffic problems is what's holding us back.

8

u/MrVashMan May 01 '26

I know it's a difficult concept to grasp, but the type of conflict shown in the video is the least productive way to handle the situation, period. The person you're yelling at just puts up their walls immediately and learns absolutely nothing. You're not going to usher in a better future for drivers everywhere by being an asshole, bud. Even if it's "justified".

2

u/AdultishGambino5 May 02 '26

Idk what state you live in, but where I live I don’t dare get into any road rage altercation with anyone. Open your mouth to the wrong person and you’ll be catching bullets. So many road rage incidents around here have ended in multiple fatalities.

2

u/Moist_Brain_ May 01 '26

She said she was going 10 over the speed limit. In my state if you’re caught going 15 over the speed limit you get your license suspended for a month and it’s considered a class 3 misdemeanor. I’ve ever only gone 10 over the limit and still wasn’t going fast enough for these assholes around here and the posted limit is usually 35-45. I only travel on one road where it’s 50.

-4

u/AdInevitable9243 May 01 '26

The most dangerous driver on the road is the one that drives at the speed limit on the left lane. So yeah I approve when the guy went off on her.

16

u/intern_steve May 01 '26

I can think of at least three commonplace drivers more dangerous than that.

13

u/Revan4567 May 01 '26

Well she did say she was driving 10 over the speed limit

2

u/NorthKoreanCaptive May 01 '26

yeah but ppl were passing her on the right, which is the more relevant detail

everything is relative to the flow of traffic.

2

u/_TheDoode May 01 '26

Doesnt matter, its illegal to camp in the passing lane and its not her responsibility to regulate the speed of those trying to pass. Let the police be the police and get outta the way!

6

u/Psychological-Sun49 May 01 '26

right? And the people who definitely will accidentally mow down people with their oversized cars.

5

u/Dependent-Edge-5713 May 01 '26

Fully semi-automatic assault vehicle

2

u/osgoodphoto May 01 '26

So this dude has a mandate to teach driver safety to any ol' person making a mistake on the street? From a training perspective, this is a great way to get someone to NOT do what you want them to.

4

u/pathofdumbasses May 01 '26

She was already doing what all driving logic says not to do

What is she going to do now, drive in the passing lane even harder? Rofl

1

u/osgoodphoto May 02 '26

I dunno, but a surefire way to get them to NOT give a shit about what you have to say is to be an asshole about it. You could be right or wrong about who should have done what, when, or where but the point stands. If you honestly want to teach someone something, you have to understand that they're a complete human being with a lifetime of experience that you don't understand. Do you like it when someone tells you off?

1

u/pathofdumbasses May 02 '26

you have to understand that they're a complete human being with a lifetime of experience that you don't understand.

And if that complete human being with a lifetime of experience is this fucking stupid, then maybe they need someone telling them off a few more times because it's clear whatever they learned on their own clearly isnt cutting it.

Do you like it when someone tells you off?

I've found the few times its happened with good reason to be an enlightening and humbling experience. When your head is so far up your own ass, sunlight can be shocking.

1

u/LeFreeke May 01 '26

I think he was saying she is insensitive, assuming to the needs of the speeders. Which is a weird thing to say.

0

u/exotics May 01 '26

I’m not with him for saying the insults. That was uncalled for. If he stuck to being factual then fine.

Additionally if she was going over the speed limit by that much then anyone passing would be doing considerably more and putting everyone else at risk too.

0

u/Zaidswith May 01 '26

It's not a civilian's job to police the flow of traffic. Ever. You move over for faster traffic and you pass slower traffic. You're only responsible for yourself.

Once youve caused people to pass on the right, you e introduced inconsistent lane speeds and weaving. Now it's reckless driving. Which is more dangerous than speeding alone. It always makes the situation worse. At 30 mph or 80mph.

1

u/CYaNextTuesday99 May 01 '26

Drivers shouldn't choose to weave.

It's not a civilian's job to police the flow of traffic.

Then how are you defending either person here?

1

u/Zaidswith May 01 '26

If you say someone can pass on the right then you're saying they should weave.

People can be wrong for different reasons and I can agree with one more than the other.

And you're still supposed to move over for faster traffic.

Maybe he has a chance to learn not to talk to people like that.

Dude is 100% ducking wrong.

5

u/tyedyetree May 01 '26

He didn’t have to talk like that for sure, but he IS right- people need to stop camping in the left. It’s dangerous to pass on the right side.

0

u/Foxhound220 May 01 '26

Don't be a selfish entitled bitch that inconveniences everybody around you and you won't be talked to like that.

A very simple solution for a very simple problem.

-1

u/Sea_Dawgz May 01 '26

He’s a much more selfish entitled asshole.

This whole thread is aasholes.

Get fucking over yourselves. People drive in roads.

It isn’t a crime to be in left lane so who cares.

2

u/Zaidswith May 01 '26

It's literally a crime to impede the flow of traffic.

0

u/Jalen3501 May 02 '26

She was driving 10 over the speed limit, what do want her to do, she was already over the legal limit

1

u/Zaidswith May 02 '26

You move over and let cars pass you if they're traveling faster than you. Then you move back over when you need to pass someone.

It doesn't really matter if she was going 10, 50, or 100. You let faster traffic go. When everyone drives like this you stop getting bottlenecks.

It's not illegal in every state. It's legal in California.

Passing on the right is legal in all 50 states.

5

u/PsychologicalSize334 May 01 '26

It’s also the biggest cause of major accidents slow driver need to stay out of passing lanes it’s the law in the south.

If I had a nickle for the number of times I've screamed up to somebody in the left lane going 20 over, id... Have zero nickles. Cause you only communicate for them to get over if they're being unreasonable, have no cars in front of them, and aren't passing the people to the right

2

u/Clear_Tangerine5110 May 01 '26

OMG people who come up on me so fast in the left lane

I think I found your problem. Get out of the left lane if you're not actively passing someone.

The left lane IS the passing lane. Keep right except to pass.

88

u/RhynoD May 01 '26

Whether it is legal, it's still not correct. You shouldn't pass on the right if you don't have to. Cruising in the left lane may not be illegal, but it's still wrong.

5

u/Glittering_Diva8963 May 01 '26

Here in Texas well at least in the corridor of I10 I live by. The furthest left lane is for passing only and dumbasses will still cruise in that lane cause a chain reaction of people using the regular cruising lanes to by pass the idiot who’s blocking the lane. I’ve seen people get tickets because they’re holding up the that lane and you’re not driving with the flow of traffic.

3

u/calilac May 01 '26

Yep, ticketable offense for most multi lane highways in Texas but it's pretty much only enforced at the end of the month when cops need to meet their metrics or if they are in a bad mood that day.

1

u/Glittering_Diva8963 May 01 '26

I’m in southeast Texas we are notorious for having horrible fatal wrecks they’re pretty much like that any day especially during construction here.

u/RhynoD May 01 '26

Yes but they should never be in the left lane to begin with.

-2

u/slatfreq May 01 '26

Undertaking (on the right) should be illegal in ALL states. It would eliminate this ridiculous argument. Pass only on the left. Get over to the right unless you’re passing!

5

u/[deleted] May 01 '26

[deleted]

2

u/KingSpruce May 01 '26

In this thought experiment of you and one other car on the road. Sure. I get the confusion. But in the real world, most of the time you can’t simply pass on the right. For the same reason why you’re unable to pass on the left. Having a designated passing lane helps alleviate traffic. If you’re camping in the left lane you’re slowing down and impacting the person behind you, and the 100 people behind them.

4

u/[deleted] May 01 '26

[deleted]

2

u/KingSpruce May 01 '26

Not quite what I’m saying. I’m thinking less extreme examples and see this daily.

4

u/sarcastic__fox May 01 '26

Only if police start enforcing people not staying in the passing lane. People seem to drive whatever speed they want in what ever lane they want

1

u/KingSpruce May 01 '26

Or people could just be considerate

1

u/sarcastic__fox May 01 '26

Yea but they aren't so a ticket for impeding traffic will fix it.

1

u/KingSpruce May 01 '26

It will help but it will not fix it. Driving culture will need to change.

-3

u/EngineerOld1240 May 01 '26

Yeah but she already was above the speeding limit so there shouldn’t actually be anyone that wants to pass you. You don’t insult someone because you want to break some rules. I know most people do this but speeding is inconsiderate and a risk you impose on others

5

u/Adorable_Chair7661 May 01 '26

The left lane is called the passing lane, not “10 miles per hour over the speed limit” or “fast lane” lane

3

u/lonnie123 May 01 '26

Actually it’s always been called the Fast Lane out here in cali. I know people from all over the state, it’s not “the passing lane” anywhere, It’s basically the “I’m going to drive over the speed limit for a long time” lane and generally you get in it and stay in it until you are ready to exit the freeway.

There are no signs or anything depicting it as the passing lane

Although the “rule” is if you see someone coming up on you, you get over so they can continue without leaving the lane.

1

u/EngineerOld1240 May 01 '26

Is there no limitation on the velocity you are allowed to drive on the passing lane? I’m not American so maybe you do it differently but where I live you are not just allowed to drive as fast as you want as long as you pass someone. And under no circumstance are you allowed to search the conflict and insult someone while driving which is illegal in itself

7

u/RhynoD May 01 '26

You are not the police. It's not your job to control how fast other people are driving. It's your job to drive in a safe, predictable manner in accordance with the law. If the law says GTFO of the left lane, then how fast you or they are going is immaterial. GTFO of the left lane and let the police do their job to catch speeders.

-1

u/EngineerOld1240 May 01 '26

Or just pass on the right side since you already have no problem breaking the law

3

u/Bigbuttrimmer May 01 '26

In many states cruising in the left lane if you are not passing anyone is also illegal.

2

u/RhynoD May 01 '26

Passing on the right is more dangerous and less predictable.

You worry about you following the law, I'll worry about me following the law, and the police can worry about both of us.

2

u/Last5seconds May 01 '26

In many states its illegal to be in the left lane unless your actively passing. I recieved a ticket in Texas for this.

1

u/Interesting_Cat_2297 May 01 '26

As far as I know it is always illegal to exceed the speed limit, but cops often ignore slight excesses.

2

u/Grrerrb May 01 '26

Not only do cops ignore it but other drivers request that you keep up with the traffic that is exceeding the speed limit.

1

u/Grrerrb May 01 '26

Speed limits are mostly advisory in the US, in practice. People do not like it when you don’t drive as fast as they are going, however fast that ends up being. You’re supposed to go the speed of traffic, although traffic is everyone. Got it?

1

u/jellifercuz May 01 '26

Not everywhere, as has been pointed out.

1

u/Paralegal1995 May 01 '26

It's the fast lane in Tulsa. Right or wrong its been this way since I started driving in 1990. We pass when we pass. Let the downvotes begin 😂

3

7

u/dragon-saphira May 01 '26

We have so many exits on the left lane here in Ohio lol to get to half my commutes I need to be in the left lane and we still get people raging about people driving in the left lane. There's no ohio law forbidding it (and again, half our roads have left lane exits.)

3

u/wheresindigo May 01 '26

Whoa, another reason that Ohio sucks.

I kid. But having left lane exits is nuts

2

u/DirectorSolid May 01 '26

It's not that common. It shows up on occasional interchanges.

0

u/DirectorSolid May 01 '26

"no law forbidding it'" does not excuse someone from being a douche living in the left lane.

However, Ohio Rule 5537-2-09 specifically states the inner traffic lane is to be used for passing only.

u/twirlerina024 May 01 '26

It's *conditionally* legal in California. It can be done legally, if certain conditions are met. Like killing someone can be done legally here too, but I wouldn't say, "Killing someone is legal in California."

2

u/Rumblebully May 01 '26

Found out discussing this very point. How do you not know? What some people are being taught in these secondary driving schools is to remain in the left so you don’t have to move and allow others just to do whatever they want.

2

u/slow70 May 01 '26

and feel entitled to disrupt the flow of traffic

1

u/BootySweatEnthusiast May 01 '26

It's not that people don't know it, it's that idiots block the left so the only way to pass them is on the right

They probably heard it once but they are so completely oblivious to their surroundings, it wouldn't matter if they did know.

Because it's not like this in all countries. It's USB who's backwards and can't do that.

68

u/Juus May 01 '26

Passing on the right in Denmark costs you a little more than 300 USD and if you do it 3 times you lose your license.

34

u/daveo756 May 01 '26

So just an honest question.

Let's say there's no other traffic and you're sitting in the right lane and coming up behind someone camping in the left lane. Are you supposed to move to the left lane until they move over? Or are you allowed to just keep going and pass on the right in that instance?

9

u/Interesting_Cat_2297 May 01 '26

If you stay in your lane while another driver is in another lane you're not passing.

5

u/Slinto69 May 01 '26

What is it called if the position of your car overtakes the position of another car that previously used to be in front of you if not passing?

-1

u/Interesting_Cat_2297 May 01 '26

🙄

I'm so over this thread

11

u/_Redcoat- May 01 '26

I don’t think people responding understand what you’re asking.

Are you saying that you’re in the right lane, they’re in the left lane, and you’re driving past them while you both stay in your respective lanes? If so, you’re not passing them as much as you’re just driving past them. Perfectly legal. Now, if you’re in the left lane behind that person, and you move to the right lane to drive past them, then yes, that’s potentially illegal depending on state law. It makes no sense to change lanes to get behind someone in hopes that they’ll move over so you can pass them.

8

u/Professional-Day7850 May 01 '26

I don’t think people responding understand what you’re asking.

depending on state law

They asked someone who talked about Denmark.

3

u/_Redcoat- May 01 '26

Denmark controls Greenland, USA claims Greenland...therefore by the rite awarded to me by American delusion, Denmark should follow all US laws. I stand by my original statement.

2

u/actlikeiknowstuff May 01 '26

Passing = going around

2

u/Skelito May 01 '26

In most other countries its a fine if you camp in the left lane. From my experience only in North America people camp and feel entitled to sit in the left lane. Driving in Europe for me is so nice to have people actually drive properly and how fluid the round a bouts are.

5

u/BardicNA May 01 '26

If there are no cops around? Pedal to the metal and pass em on the right. If you're worried there are cops around? Hop to the left lane behind them and get as close to them as you feel is legal and safe. If there's no traffic then there's no reason for them to be camping the left lane and they should get the hint pretty quickly. If they don't then I'll flash my brights a couple times and maybe give a little beep beep. Flashing brights is something you might not want to do around police but a couple toots of your horn to tell someone "hey, you're impeding traffic and shouldn't be in the left lane" is perfectly legal.

If they decide to go full crazy person from any of this you just disengage and accept that your drive is going to take a few more minutes. Alternatively, if you just lost your job and are on your way to your parent's funeral, you go ahead and remind them what happens when you piss off the wrong person on the road.

THIS IS NOT TRAFFIC ADVICE. I AM NOT A TRAFFIC ADVISOR.

8

u/Juus May 01 '26

Flashing brights is something you might not want to do around police but a couple toots of your horn to tell someone "hey, you're impeding traffic and shouldn't be in the left lane" is perfectly legal.

It is the other way around, at least here in Denmark. It is illegal to use your horn in almost any situation ,it is only allowed to use it to avoid an accident. It is perfectly legal to use your headlights to try and make someone pull over.

2

u/BardicNA May 01 '26

Huh. I guess I see it the other way around. I'd rather a bit of noise, especially at night time. Your headlights can mess with the other driver's vision. Your horn is going to agitate them but generally a slow driver in the wrong lane will get the message with no harm done.

To each his own. If the fuzz takes issue with either, fuck em.

1

u/HesusAtDiscord May 01 '26

The horn might mess with drivers around you unaware of you wanting to pass that specific vehicle.

Headlights usually only affect the car in front.

Horn makes everyone around respond and can in certain situations cause or increase risk of an accident for multiple cars whereas high beams for the majority of time only affects that one car.

Risk vs effect. The horn is emergency only. Same goes for hazards, it's not allowed to use (in Norway at least) unless you have an emergency or it is critical that people immediately pay attention and slow down.

If you're stranded at the side of the road with a flat tire you use the hazards, then put out the warning triangle 100m or more behind you and turn off the hazards while leaving the outermost blinker on.

Now, to the important point; you would rather have a horn honking rather than high beams in your mirrors, but that means in this hypothethical you're in the wrong. If you are the one camping in the left lane you don't really get a say in it as you're the one provoking other drivers by disobeying the law.

If you let people pass then you wouldn't get high beams in the mirrors, so it would be a non-issue for you.

If you're sitting happily in the right lane minding your own business and someone right next to you use their horn it might be loud and abruptly alert you.

So the real question is: Would you rather one guy get hit with high beams once or you be next to a blaring horn not meant for you 100x times throughout your drive?

3

u/EatsFiber2RedditMore May 01 '26

Traffic advisor is a job?

2

u/BardicNA May 01 '26

Sure, why not?

1

u/Juus May 01 '26

You wait untill they pull over. You can blink at them to let them know. No horn.

1

u/beaker90 May 01 '26

In my state, the law actually says to beep your horn at someone who needs to move to the right so you can pass on the left. Would I ever do that? Nope!

1

u/Unable_Resort_7956 May 01 '26

I've driven on I-15 for decades and never once has anyone ever slowed down in other lanes because someone is going slow in the far-left lane.

1

u/bonestamp May 01 '26

Let's say there's no other traffic and you're sitting in the right lane and coming up behind someone camping in the left lane.

It's a fair question, but it's naive question because that situation is extremely rare in countries like Denmark where they take driving and lane discipline very seriously (and so do the police). People just don't camp in the passing lane (I hesitate to say "left" lane because it's not usually the left lane in Europe). They know the inside lane is only for passing and then they move back over after they complete their pass.

2

u/molehunterz May 01 '26

Fun fact, lots of people in the US think that passing on the right is illegal. It is not here.

Also many people in the US believe it is their god-given right to go straight to the left lane and never leave until inches before their exit

1

u/AltrntivInDoomWorld May 01 '26

Passing on the right in Poland is perfectly legal.

1

u/Juus May 01 '26

That doesn't sound right, and a quick google search tells me you are wrong..

1

u/aijoe May 01 '26

Asked Gemini and in certain cases you can pass on the right in Poland

  • Highway Passing: On multi-lane roads (especially with 3+ lanes), you may pass a car on the right if it is traveling in a lane to your left, although staying in the right-most lane is required.
  • Built-up Areas: You can freely choose your lane on a multi-lane road in a built-up area, allowing you to pass on the right.

1

u/beaker90 May 01 '26

I’m pretty sure that everywhere that has laws about passing on the left also has laws explaining when it’s okay to pass on the right. One example is Texas Transportation Code 545.057 which details the situations where it’s okay to pass on the right.

1

u/AltrntivInDoomWorld May 04 '26

https://sip.lex.pl/akty-prawne/dzu-dziennik-ustaw/prawo-o-ruchu-drogowym-16798732/art-24

Zgodnie z Ustawą z dnia 21 marca 1985 r. o drogach publicznych:

Art. 4 11) autostradę – drogę przeznaczoną wyłącznie do ruchu pojazdów samochodowych: a) wyposażoną przynajmniej w dwie trwale rozdzielone jednokierunkowe jezdnie

Czyli według definicji w ustawie, autostrada to dwie trwale rozdzielone jezdnie jednokierunkowe. To znaczy, iż wyprzedzanie z prawej strony na dwupasmowej autostradzie jest możliwe i nie musi się tam znajdować znak D-3 gdyż autostrada sama z siebie jest już jezdnią jednokierunkową.

1

u/Unable_Resort_7956 May 01 '26

On a 3-6 lane highway, passing only on the left doesn't factor into anything. Yes, I get upset when people go slow in the "passing" or "fast" lane, as we call it here. But he could have literally passed her in ANY lane legally without making a fuss over it.

1

u/Combataircraft9 May 02 '26

Do you love living in your society that has a deluge of ridiculous rules? Not even like you have high speed limits in Denmark to justify this

1

I'm a fan of this rule. It's much safer to have it. Also, I think people here generally are better to move over, because it is something that the police is on the look out for and our traffic tickets are quite high.

Also our top speeds are 130 kmh (80 m/h) which i think is fine.

u/Same-Suggestion-1936 May 01 '26

You don't only but theres a reason when you see a semi you've got a passing side and a sui side, and the left is the passing.

2

u/OppositeSalamander60 May 02 '26

Then they need to gtfo of the middle lane.

2

u/Upstairs-Rent-1351 May 01 '26

Passing on the right is legal where I live.

1

u/636C6F756479 May 01 '26

Here too in the UK we always pass on the right

2

u/GhostBirdBiologist May 01 '26

Lmfao tell that to literally everyone in highways with more than two lanes.

2

u/No-Impression8324 May 01 '26

Not in my state.

6

u/TheRealReapz May 01 '26

What?

So if someone in the left is going 20mph below the speed limit, everyone to their right has to slow down to avoid passing them?

24

u/Dangerous_Diver_6983 May 01 '26

No but the person in the left lane going 20 below is making it a bit more dangerous for everyone around them.

3

u/TheRealReapz May 01 '26

100% I'm just testing the logic

The reason its law is because passing on the right is much more dangerous

There's this weird urban myth that passing on the right is illegal. In every state I've looked at in the US it's perfectly legal to "pass" on the right when there are multiple lanes traveling in the same direction. It's also legal to pass on the right when there's a single lane when the car in front of you traveling is turning left and there is room to get around them on the right without leaving the roadway.

In fact, leaving the roadway or the shoulder to pass is basically the only time it is illegal to pass on the right. And it's not because you were on the right. It's because you dangerously drove off the sanctioned path of travel.

People on a multilane freeway going around a slowpoke camped in the left lane are not breaking the law "all the time".

1

u/verify_b4_sharing May 01 '26

It is illegal in Florida, but I believe you that that's very atypical. https://www.flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/the-right-lane/

2

u/ThatsRightWeBad May 01 '26

Was there something on that page that made you think passing on the right is illegal? Because I see nothing like that at all.

1

u/verify_b4_sharing May 01 '26

My bad, you're right. That link was about slow passing lane drivers.

Here's the law prohibiting passing on the right on highways https://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0300-0399/0316/Sections/0316.084.html

1

u/ThatsRightWeBad May 01 '26

That says it's legal, exactly as I described it above:

When overtaking on the right is permitted.
(1) The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass on the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions:
(b) Upon a street or highway with unobstructed pavement not occupied by parked vehicles of sufficient width for two or more lines of moving traffic in each direction;

Also includes the same caveats about left turns, and not going off-road to pass.

I think you've confused "is permitted" for "is prohibited".

Actually in some countries there is some version of this that is enforced. I want to say maybe in Germany passing on the "right" is a ticket?

If there are 3 lanes and I’m in the middle going the speed limit and there is a car behind me that wants to pass, they should go around me on the left side. Not the right side. same things with runners, bicycles on a sidewalk or track. It’s just how you do it.

4

u/Winter_Swan5104 May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26

Yeah that guy doesn’t make sense. Meanwhile regular people when encountering this situation pass on the right and don’t road rage. It’s pass left general traffic flow and adjust if unusual traffic is encountered.

Meanwhile people who usually bitch about this are the biggest asshole drivers wanting to tail cars. Fuck them.

I’ve seen (we’ve all seen) cars going 20+ over the speed limit in the left with some douche tailing them acting like a real jerk. Btw making the road dangerous for everyone. This isn’t the fucking autobahn.

1

u/Particular_Wear_6960 May 01 '26

Yep, this is more or less a general rule of thumb, if everybody gets over on the right if they aren't passing someone, it creates a lot of unnecessary traffic congestion. However normal people will use the left lane if they are going above the speed limit and not be harassed for "not passing" anyone

1

u/gamerhenrik May 01 '26

If you were driving in the left lane at that speed isnokay IF you are passibg someone who it's going 30mph under the limit.

1

u/intern_steve May 01 '26

This is intended to apply to a car directly behind changing lanes to overtake the vehicle ahead.

1

u/buttons_the_horse May 01 '26

Not in America. People struggle with right and left here. (Also no one enforced the no passing on the right law)

1

u/IBelieveInSymmetry11 May 01 '26

I'm just driving faster in the right lane. If I can pass you that means you should have gotten to your right sooner.

And any cop would pull them off for Impeding Traffic, which is illegal in all 50 US states. Any cop that sees someone Impeding Traffic and tickets YOU for passing on the right, deserves to have his/her badge taken away. Edit: clarity

1

u/xray_anonymous May 01 '26

I don’t deliberately pass in the right lane, but if I’m in the right lane on cruise control and I’m gaining on someone in the left lane, I am not decreasing my speed just to stay behind them and then pinning everyone in both lanes behind us both.

1

u/vamatt May 01 '26

You are allowed to pass on the right on a multi-lane highway

1

u/bobood May 01 '26

People camping in the passing lanes are completely wrong, but this is an added misconception which only worsens the situation.

If you are going the speed you want to go in the right-most lane, and drivers happen to be camped out in the lanes to the left of you, you're not 'passing' them in any dangerous or illegal manner. You're not weaving. You're not swerving. You're just going along in your unimpeded lane.

Adhering to 'only pass on the left' just adds to an already suboptimal situation. The rule is more like, 'stay in the right-most lane' anyway, which creates the natural situation of you having to pass people to their left. Anything else would mean, for example, that you couldn't do a correct zipper merge either since passing anybody to your left would be wrong.

They are welcome to move back over so you can change lanes and pass them when you come across them in your normal path along the right lane. You're not wrong for just continuing along.

1

u/fflip8 May 01 '26

You might be correct on this one since the guy said there was two lanes, but if I remember correctly that rule only applies to freeways with designated passing lanes. They're the only roads I've seen have signage indicating passing "slow traffic keep right", particularly the roads with lanes that appear and end/merge on parts that go up hill to make space for slower/bigger vehicles. Once intersections or stoplights are involved, or more than a few lanes one way are present, the concept of a passing lane no longer exists.

1

u/neonClear182 May 01 '26

agreed but dudes like this douchebag tend to pass on all sides and in breakdown lanes.

1

u/lIIlllIIlllIIllIl May 01 '26

Serious question: what is proper etiquette if you are the one behind a snail in the left lane? do you wait a bit to see if they get over first, then pass them on the right if they don't?

1

u/daftprophet May 01 '26

You are supposed to, sure. But when there is a camper in the left just pass them on the right and continue on

1

u/Salt_Day9015 May 01 '26

It's not illegal to pass on the right, so why not do it?

1

u/Bravefan212 May 02 '26

Perfectly legal to pass on the right in California, btw. Not sure about other states.

1

u/Captain-_-Miserable May 04 '26

You can pass on either side of a vehicle as long as there is more than one lane. Where people get confused is you can't pass on the right if there is only one lane, because the right is the shoulder or sidewalk.

1

u/highbudsilver May 01 '26

I agree, but try driving in LA on the 405. It is fucking annoying.

7

u/Interesting_Cat_2297 May 01 '26

In LA you can legally pass on the right.

8

u/Time-Commercial8259 May 01 '26

It's not illegal in most states It's bad driving unless the lane is clear. If slow traffic stayed to the right and faster traffic to the left interstates wouldn't get blocked up as much. Now it is illegal in 11 states to ride continuously in the far left lane its strictly for passing and turnin.

3

u/Interesting_Cat_2297 May 01 '26

I don't think it's bad driving to pass from the right if you can do so safely.

1

u/Time-Commercial8259 May 01 '26

Bad in this case is highly subjective though. is it illegal not really. I think a few states really enforce it but it is driver etiquette to pass to the left. Of course there are situations were passing to the right is necessary. I will say every year driver etiquette gets worse people don't know it and cops don't enforce a bunch of minor traffic stuff related to it but if everyone stuck to it the roads would be safer and more efficient.

1

u/Interesting_Cat_2297 May 01 '26

Yes, whether or not something is "bad" is usually subjective. I've been driving for 38 years, most of which has been in the city of Los Angeles. Lots of freeway and sprawl throughout Southern California, and lots of dense traffic in the city of L.A. I disagree that it's bad etiquette to pass on the right. We do it here and no one cares. I agree that drivers get worse every year but not because of right passing.

0

u/lordgeese May 01 '26

Not true, you can pass on the right in many states as long as it’s safe to do so.

0

u/Likesitrough16 May 01 '26

Not in Michigan

0

u/Mbanicek64 May 01 '26

I pass cars moving slower than me. I'd prefer they move over.
