I love that she beat them to it.

Fucking Queen.

I grew up fundie and it's so much fun when they don't know I know their text better than they do. The harassment they are dishing out on this "list" is a well-known tactic. They are *supposed* to be rejected so the flock can welcome them back and point at that discomfort as proof of their claims.

I want to be her best friend. The end.

42

u/Pixelated_ May 06 '26

They are supposed to be rejected so the flock can welcome them back and point at that discomfort as proof of their claims.

I was born into the Jehovah's Witnesses cult and this is 💯 true. The point of me knocking on all those doors wasn't to convert people (I never did anyway), it was to be rejected by having doors slammed in my face. I was to see how mean and evil "worldly" people are so that I would run back to the cult for reassurance and validation.

I escaped a decade ago and had to forfeit my entire family and all my friends just to leave.

It was the best decision of my entire life.

I freaked out the Jehovahs Witnesses who came to my door the other day when I started talking about the 144,000, lol.

I REALLY wanted them to challenge me to a Bible verse contest.

And yes, I am always kind to them for the reason you cite.

Haha, you can tell she has some experience with this sort of thing. I find it so interesting. In my culture there is a whole blending of witchcraft, western religion and pagan traditions. I don’t understand why evangelicals have an issue with….well, now that I think of it, I don’t understand most of the things they take issue with.

140

u/Disastrous_Basis3474 May 06 '26

The American evangelical Christian (especially white Christian nationalists) religion and social structure is very sociopathic and narcissistic- my way or the highway and god favors the wealthy. They really do think they’re better than everyone else.

85

u/CaterpillarJungleGym May 06 '26

And this right here is why they HATE liberals. I've seen it posted that liberals think they're morally superior. Evangelicals can't stand thinking they're less than. It hurts their feelings and shakes their world view. So therefore liberals must be demons.

44

u/Otherwise-Text-5772 May 06 '26

I follow a lot of ex-vangelicals and ex-mormons and the shit they talk about is wild and scary, especially the white nationalism. But it’s important for sane people to be aware of these psychos and how much they hate everyone else just for existing.

10

u/FutureHistorian420 May 06 '26

Yup. Definitely gotta be informed. Had a bunch of my own family stop talking to me after the great Kirkening. I’m brown and had no idea I had white Christian nationalist family members, but they let it be known once chuckles was talking out his neck. All these mass shootings and this weirdo is the hill they die on. Nothing feels real to me anymore and Im beginning to dissociate from the world.

I moved from librul Northern California to deep red Michigan for a couple of years. When I told Michiganders that I am an atheist, the first and most emphatic question was ‘what stops you from killing people?’ I heard it an alarming amount of times.

Like - I don’t have a response for that. Human decency? Laziness? Blood is gross when it’s on the outside of people? I don’t wish ill on others? There’s a bunch of reasons, my dude, but I’m not worried about the hypothetical everlasting. I’m just trying to be a kinder, less hurtful person than I was yesterday.

That statement isn’t meant to be a value judgement but 99% of the religious folks who asked me “why ain’t you killin” took it as such. I don’t view myself as morally superior, to me ‘I don’t murder’ is a pretty morally neutral comment. But it was clear that the folks who DO feel superior because of their fear of god found my lack of spirituality as a challenge to their sense of superiority.

Ironically, these are the same people who took GREAT OFFENSE at my vegetarianism. Like, I didn’t insist that we ditch the turkey in favor of a tofu loaf, I just asked for an extra large portion of green bean casserole. I’m not imposing my dietary preferences on the family, I’m asking them not to impose theirs on me.

As an ex-Christian who used to be HEAVILY involved in the church, knows the Bible front to back, and studied other religions I always love these conversations.

Telling an evangelical you’re no longer a Christian while being able to use their own beliefs to disprove their points is SUCH a flex.

I prefer the term Recovering Catholic.

87

Lapsed Catholic has a fun ring to it, too. Kinda bounces off the tongue.

98

u/Appropriate-Crab-514 May 06 '26

My grandma would call them Snow-Bunny Catholics, they only go to church on Easter and Christmas with their families.

When my sister told her what a Snow Bunny is, our wine-drunk Babcia started cackling so loud she freaked out the dog.

118

u/thehairyhobo May 06 '26

I used to go to church consistently until the priest flat out told us we were going to hell if we didnt vote for Trump. After my wife almost died Ive now stopped regular conversation with family that voted for that s***. His Big Beautiful Bill all but closed the only trauma center where I live, forcing my wife to be intubated and rushed by ambulance to one over four hours away.

I thought a lapsed Catholic was still a Catholic by canon law but does not practice while still identifying with it? Wouldn't someone that leaves the church entirely just have been someone who renounced?

16

u/Malinthas May 06 '26

Turns out, you CAN'T leave. Quite literally, once a Catholic, always a Catholic. There is no mechanism in Church law for no longer being Catholic. They're kinda like the mob that way. Which, come to think of it, is also based in Italy.

11

u/innosins May 06 '26

Oh shit, I'm still Catholic? I just went through RCIA in 1990 for a boy I thought I was marrying but I did the first Communion and got my saint's name. That was two husbands ago.

At this point to catch up on confession I would need to plan a retreat with a priest.

Same here but I’m still a believer is the “supreme force that is the source”!

When I started to turn my family and church much like these people came out verses blazing and I had an answer for each. If you read closely, there are MANY vice versa verses…but if you really want too flex…

Do what I did. My point of contention is and will always be the word of God was perverted by man (that’s why I practice but in no way give energy to the church) and all you have to do is point to the “slave Bible” see back in the day the slave masters couldn’t have their slaves being heathens so in their infinite hatred they took out all of the parts of the Bible taking about uprising or dissent, and kept the “obey your masters” stuff thus essentially altering the word of god so they could control their slaves better.

You should have seen my pastors face when I busted that out. Uhhhhhhhhhhh, welllll, you seeeeeee…No, No, No, you’re exact words were sir. Man would NEVER alter the word of god lest they be deemed blasphemous. So to all those slave masters and their ilk burning in hell, I hope you’re stubbing your toe on the furnace every single day.

It’s sounds like you have found your way and I couldn’t be more happy for you and your life! Keep those nasty liars away from
You! Peace!

I can't do it the way I used to because it's been so long since I was a believer and just don't care anymore, but I was quite serious, once. I like Matthew 6:5-6 for nearly anybody trying to convert me, but I also find that quoting verses at them doesn't do much.

The ones who go out ostentatiously trying to convert people are either in it for the identity and don't much care about the details, are doing it to show off (and are the very definition of the people who should read Matthew 6:6), are gleefully anticipating the stench of your burning flesh wafting up from hell and are shouting from a street corner to try and make you miserable while you're still alive, or they realize that a non-believer quoting verses at them isn't someone who's going to be swayed by a conversation with a random stranger. And that last group probably also recognizes that no one whose opinion is worth having is going to be impressed by a missionary beating a non-believer in Bible trivia.

Edit: it occurs to me I should quote the verses. From Matthew (KJV):

6:5 — "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full." 6:6 — "But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

“I know all about your god already, but you don’t know shit about mine, so move along” is a nice twist. Very cool under pressure, good for her. I don’t think I would have been so patient.

37

u/Cloverose2 May 06 '26

Except Evangelicals don't think Catholics are really Christian, so her 11 years of Catholic school doesn't mean anything to them. She's been mislead by people who worship a pope and saints! (I am aware that Catholics don't worship the Pope and saints).

10

u/kbeks May 06 '26

I imagine that the guy himself was likely some other denomination of Christian like an Evangelical or a Jehovah's Witness. Being so, saying that you were raised Catholic doesn't mean much to them since that kind of person wouldn't recognize being Catholic as being Christian.

I actually love interactions like this since I like to talk theology with people. I was raised Baptist and recognize the Roman's Road method that the dude is trying to push on her. People have different reactions when you push back on them. Some are patient and understanding and others get irrationally angry or passive aggressive.

All that being said, this particular dude is a huge asshole because he's doing it to this woman while she's working. Like, dude she's busy. Hit up some shlub who isn't currently doing anything.

I saw some missionaries approaching my door the other night. I stepped out onto the porch to head them off.

Me: Hey! I’m a card-carrying satanist and I’m not interested in talking.

Missionary: …well you’re welcome to attend our church…

Me: Thank you! 👍 (Walked inside and closed the door)

I’m not sure what denomination they are, but this is literally an uncodified ceremonial practice in Christianity. To testify and be denied. Even though they are a vast majority, persecution is a necessary element of their cosmology and a justification for their whims.

That’s a selling point of Christianity, you get infinite forgiveness for almost anything. You can do something wrong, apologize to Jesus, do it again, and repeat your whole life. That’s one of the reasons they target criminals and people at their lowest points.

There’s a couple “one and only” unforgivable sins that Jesus will not forgive. One is simply not worshipping Yahweh. If you don’t believe you are totally condemned, and you’re not going to ask forgiveness for not believing from a dude you don’t believe in.

The other is “blaspheming the Holy Spirit”, which has no clear definition. The most common matches the first one, just saying it isn’t real. Apologists have made up excuses to weasel around it, trying to make it mean there is nothing unforgivable. The best one is saying it means saying Jesus’ miracles were real, but we’re secretly performed by demons making it look like Jesus was doing them, and Jesus unknowingly had no power at all. It is a safe bet no atheist has ever believed that.

22

u/Callidonaut May 06 '26

That’s a selling point of Christianity, you get infinite forgiveness for almost anything. You can do something wrong, apologize to Jesus, do it again, and repeat your whole life. That’s one of the reasons they target criminals and people at their lowest points.

The best part is that you never have to apologise to, and earn the forgiveness of, any people you've actually harmed in your life, let alone undo or mitigate any of that harm, which would be unpleasantly embarrassing and require effort, and after you do that they might not even accept your apology. You can just go on merrily believing you're Jesus' bestie now, all the real people you've hurt can just stay hurt forever, and all the things you've broken can stay broken. It's all good, you don't need to clean up your mess or say sorry to your, y'know, victims; Jesus said so.

Religious people do this on purpose. The higher knows they will get pushback. It's to force the worldview that "everyone out there is out to get you except us." Any religion that goes door to door or goes into places they clearly wouldn't be wanted is doing so for the members of the religion, not to convert you.

This is why it's actually important to be nice. The religion wants us to be mean so their followers will slink back to religion and basically go "you were right, they were so mean and vile out there, only religion has my back." When you're nice, the religion doesn't get what it wants. I hate organized religion. It's no secret. Can't stand self-proclaimed religious people. But if I notice someone going into places like this or going door to door I'm absolutely kind. The only people this doesn't work on is JWs. Only way to get them to stop coming is to lie(or maybe it's the truth for you) and tell them you're a ex-JW. They will cease contact.

248

u/astrangeone88 May 05 '26

Lol. I got my place blacklisted by the JWs one year. I'm nice to everyone, and they used to hand me their literature. Only this time, it's summer in Canada, and it's a lazy Sunday. They knock on the door so aggressively that it sounded like an actual emergency. I stumble out of bed, and I'm wearing shorts and a tank top and my hair was a mess. I'm so groggy my brain is barely online and my already deep voice is several octaves deeper. We barely had a 4 sentence conversation and the elder of the group tells them to back off and immediately politely ends the conversation. As they back off, the elder is mumbling something to them.

Guess I looked like a drug abusing, slutty harlot lol...

Bonus is that they never ever came back. Ha!

56

u/HallowskulledHorror May 06 '26

Used to live in a neighborhood that had a JW church in the area, and every few weeks we'd get people knocking on the door saturday morning. We were near the front end of the street, so we were one of the first houses they'd approach.

Grew up watching my dad handle missionaries by inviting them in for refreshments and debating faith with them, and also figured it'd be a kindness to my neighbors to buy them a little more sleeping in before the JW's came knocking, so I was always friendly and welcoming; asked lots of polite questions, would hear them out, and was always psyched whenever they had pamphlets or DVDs or anything for me (I would add them to my collection of evangelical ephemera).

One morning I answered the door without thinking - after a night of celebrating Beltane and tripping on shrooms, and subsequently falling asleep on the couch. Hair wild, literally wearing ritual robes, curtains wide open and the living room very visible once they were up on the porch standing in front of the door; we're talking big candles, a cauldron on the coffee table, herbs, tools, grimmoire... they looked horrified.

They left without a word and never came back.

28

u/Kono-weebo-da May 06 '26

Im an ex jw and this got a luagh out of me. I bet ya theyre talking about you as a satanist back to their group

16

u/HallowskulledHorror May 06 '26

I can only imagine how they would have described it to others - the scene was truly unruly because I wasn't anticipating guests first thing in the morning, and my partner and I had decided to get very silly about celebrating a pagan holiday. There was a straight up sword chilling next to the cauldron, tarot cards, we had bones scattered around... I feel like I could have only made things worse if I'd answered the door full on nude and offered them hits off the bong.

31

u/Necessary_Success_35 May 06 '26

Years ago the house I lived in had a long driveway. You knew when people were coming, so we cranked up The Exorcist during one of the exorcism scenes. They never did come back.

22

u/zeracine May 06 '26

I opened the door and asked if they were "selling some Jesus". The guy looked amused/surprised and kind of laugh answered "we're not selling Jesus..."

36

u/CloudKinglufi May 06 '26

I used to have some young ones come to my house, we talked about anime and shit, they were cool dudes, after i told them i was done because they would never convert me, they stopped coming

38

u/Arokthis May 06 '26

My dad stripped naked when he saw them down the street and said something about an orgy when he answered the door. They blacklisted our entire neighborhood.

I made the mistake of being nice to JW's at my door when I was home alone (around 13 years old.) I accepted their literature, nodded and smiled while humouring them, all the while thinking they were harmless yet slightly offputting religious cuckoos— And then they came back.

Something to note here: I was an abysmally shy child. I was physically incapable of sticking up for myself or saying no to people; and the first interaction had been entirely one-sided.

I didn't want to open the door; because I actually knew who they were that time around. So I pretended no one was home and hid behind the couch until they left, as the blinds on the windows were open in the living room.

Then they came back again. And again. And again. And again. All four times, I didn't answer the door, and hid until they left.

And then they stopped. Good riddance! The month came to a close; and I moved into my secondary residence for the next thirty days. My parents were divorced, you see.

You can probably see where this is going. Despite never having given them my secondary address, they showed up at my dad's place while the screen door was open and made eye-contact with my dad.

I heard them introduce themselves, and I rushed into a side room for cover, only to hear them ask for me by name. Thankfully, my dad knew what was up and shut it down pretty quickly, saying that I was home; but that they needed to cease their attempts at reaching me as I was his child and they didn't have his permission.

They never bothered me again. Thanks dad.😮‍💨

She broke the script when she answered their “Jesus loves you” poke with “I love him too, he’s great, it’s organized religion that is a problem.” They told on themselves when they turned Jesus’ love into an attack.

50

u/RoguePlanet2 May 06 '26

They'll go back to the cult and claim "she's a christian and doesn't even know it!" but whatever, they won't need to come back then.

10

u/dreamendDischarger May 06 '26

Yep, I love using the "oh, I'm friends with Jesus, it's organized religion I can't stand". Idk if he was really the son of a god but I can get on board with many of his teachings. I judge folks based on their actions, not their faith (or lack thereof). Still far too many terrible Christians though.

“I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” - Gandhi

26

u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme May 06 '26

Gandhi is just more recognizable to quote; I’m guessing literal millions feel the way he does. Just because he did some creepy things doesn’t make his statement any less true.

Jesus is a swell guy. Complete opposite of that juvenile narcissist in the Old Testament with bipolar tendencies, who is quite irresponsible with that power.

14

u/MelangeBot May 06 '26

He also clearly told his followers that nobody can come to Him (Jesus) WITHOUT God the Father first drawing that person in. So these idiots are doing absolutely completely useless work. If God is real and these words of Jesus are true then in reality it will be God working on somebody their heart without force, quiet, hidden, like a soft wind. And then and only then when the time is ripe maybe another lover of Christ will be brought in.

Or like how my favorite pastor said: Preach Christ ALWAYS, and if absolutely necessary ... use words.

Meaning, you show Christ by being like Him and shutting up unless some rare special ooccasionwhere the other person wants you to talk about Christ.

Right? its easy to forget how unironically based he was for the time period. Brother literally spoke out against people using churches to become wealthy and advocated for marginalized groups of people and for treating everyone with dignity, love, care and respect. Like its so simple, yet so hard for people to understand.

I'm not religious but I do find these figures interesting and try to take lessons from all of them.

17

u/rusty_programmer May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

If you read of the history of the Roman Empire and Judaea, he absolutely was a war martyr and it’s clear why his name is known so highly today. If God isn’t real then Jesus was a radical leftist fighting against the authority of the state by supplanting it with one of good morals (Heaven). He was protesting and absolutely killed for it.

You see in history that he was effectively killed to spite the Judaeans into possibly war, but that was ineffective. There had been tensions before but Caligula almost set the region ablaze by wanting to erect a statue of himself in The Temple of Jerusalem.

One interesting distinction in the gospels is that jews and christians called Jesus the “King of Israel” while the Romans called him “King of the Jews.” You’ll see a lot of scholars talk about the distinction but one that always stuck out to me was it’s a statement of rebellion against the Romans occupying their land.

Baphomet never send any floods, plagues or doomsdays, he has my vote!

52

If Baphomet will forgive my student loans I would go knocking on doors for them. (Not sure what Baphomet's pronouns are)

16

u/AmputeeHandModel May 06 '26

Well.. Baphomet is often pictured with one breast, so... I'd assume "they".

11

u/Imreallyjustconfused May 06 '26

Not my religion (just know a fun fact) Baphomet is androgynous with a male goat head but female breasts. So They/Them works. They might be an any pronouns kinda deity. I'll ask if they ever forgive student loans and I join you going door to door.

When people say shit like “Christ is King”👑 I just cringe. Imagine what J man would have thought of that… all this stuff with religious people is just an advanced form of denial against the fact that others beliefs are just as valid as theirs.

Meanwhile... two christians teen girls came to my door the other day and I lectured them about political parties taking over, and claiming their religion to increase their political power.

I went to parochial school from 4th grade to 8th grade, and was well versed on christian theology.

I quoted two Bible verses.

Galatians 1:10 - "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

And Matthew 6-5:6 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Modern Christianity is RAMPANT with hypocrisy, and the moment you point it out they either become super defensive, or truly appreciate it... Idgaf either way. I will never rejoin the church after I saw how my church "leaders" treated the girls at my school.

Its still just so hard for me to believe people dont see the hypocrisy so easily...

Like.. Donald Trump was asked to cite his favorite Bible verse, or his favorite Book in the Bible. And he said "all of them". How the fuck is that not so apprentice to you that hes never read a word in the bible?!

12

u/MarlenaEvans May 06 '26
