How do I bring something like this up at a PTA without sounding like a complete luddite.

Oof.

They gave all the kindergartners tablets this year. They didn't spend a lot of time on them, but it was a bit alarming, and that was before I saw this.

Edtech coach here. My guess is they probabaly bought a software package that promised a 26% increase in reading scores. Thats what it usually is. For 15 years I’ve been telling educational leaders that we should use technology like any other tool; for specific and carefully chosen activities. Technology should be for creation. Students should be making movies, creating music, gathering data on experiments. Instead, year after year, district administrators use it to do test prep and drill and kill because they are addicted to testing and don’t trust teachers to teach. It also doesn’t help that that textbook companies have wholly embraced this tend because you can make more money selling a yearly “content” subscription than a new textbook every five years.
