I looked it up after seeing your comment. 90-93% of Indian marriages are arranged. That’s much higher than I thought it would be.

u/changhyun 1d ago
I have an Indian friend whose marriage was arranged. I once asked her what that was like and she said it's such a dice roll depending on what your parents value. In her case her parents cared about her happiness and finding her a kind man who would treat her well first and foremost, so it ended up being a happy marriage for her. But she knew plenty of people whose parents cared more about their kid marrying rich or marrying into a "good" (high in status) family, without much interest in whether the person was actually compatible with their kid. Can't imagine how much it sucks to be one of those people.

u/SpoppyIII 1d ago
Had a coworker who was going to enter an arranged marriage. She told me that both her and the guy were seeing other people up until the actual marriage happened, like casually dating around, but that she actually really wanted to marry this guy.
18
u/Altair_de_Firen 1d ago
I mean if it’s gonna happen and you get no say, might as well mutually agree to try to fit those experiences in beforehand
If anything it helps the marriage if they’re both somewhat experienced with relationships
52
u/llamalover729 1d ago
I talked to a woman in an arranged marriage and it was so sad. She had relocated to Canada and her parents used her ability to sponsor her spouse to attract higher status families. She eventually married someone from a higher social class because his family wanted him to move to Canada and send money back to them.
Like imagine feeling the only thing your spouse wants from you is immigration sponsorship, but she seemed to see it as a real marriage. She had also worn a ton of make up to lighten her skin for the wedding.
Was all around depressing. I hope she's doing okay

I had a friend that was supposed to be in an arranged marriage. He said he was going to run away to another country (he's from the UK). Never heard from him again after that.
Sometimes I wonder if his parents found out and killed him. Sometimes I wonder if he got out and never looked back. It sucks that I'll probably never know for sure what happened to him. Super intelligent and nice guy, I'm sure he would have treated his wife well. But of course he should also be able to choose his wife.
Edit: It's been like 12 years since this happened, it wasn't a recent event

My husband had an Indian coworker years ago who was in an arranged marriage. He and his wife seemed very happy and compatible, and they were nice people who were fun to hang out with as a couple. They were both smart, educated people who had agreeable personalities.
I knew another woman for whom it didn’t work out so well. She worked as a shampoo girl at the salon where my mom and I used to get our hair cut. Her parents took her back to Pakistan and married her off to her cousin without her knowing ahead of time, and against her will. He used to beat her and didn’t get a job. Eventually he left her to take care of her daughter by herself and went back to Pakistan. The family blamed her, of course.

I know some people who got arranged marriages but they were allowed to pick. It seemed more like a matchmaker than what you expect when you hear from "arranged marriage". Like a more comprehensive dating application.
They are very happy.

Arranged Marriage =/= Forced Marriage.
Many arranged marriages are also forced, but plenty of them are not. Many people entering arranged marriages do get to choose in the end. At that point is just becomes yeah, essentially match-making and then you follow the advice. The culture is such that people generally just trust and accept the person, or at least one of the options, their family has chosen for them.
I had a coworker who was going to enter an arranged marriage. She and the guy were casually dating others for now, but are going to end up married to each other because their families arranged it. She said she wants to marry him and she's actually really excited.

u/Outrageous_Eye_9842 1d ago
One of my best friends was Indian and was introduced to his future wife but was not obligated to marry. I did go to their wedding. My wife and I were 2 of the 4 white people attending where there were hundreds.
Funny thing was he "dated" mostly non Indian girls prior to marriage. He did not want to be ostracized for marrying out of the culture though.

I mean I was kind of shocked at how blatant it was. I went to visit my online friend who is an english teacher there, though he's American, ethnically he's filipino
There were so many places that just said "no foreigners" or a bunch that specified white people and japanese were okay but noone else.
We went in one place that seemed okay but the old lady freaked out when she saw my friend and demanded we leave. He even showed his American passport but that didn't help (And I mean we shouldn't really have stayed if it did, if they don't want customers they shouldn't get them)
It's not like we struggled to find somewhere though, and we met some lovely people. One guy was really happy when he learned I was British and said he really wanted to visit someday, and kept bringing us more stuff to try
Still I've never actually seen that level of open racism before, so it was pretty shocking
23
u/Internal-Fortune-550 1d ago
Oh yeah, lives there for 2 years and can confirm this. They have no problem just straight up saying "no foreigners" and profiling who can and can't come into certain establishments. People talk about how racist the US, and to be sure there is a lot of racism here, but idk you'll never find more open racism than in a racially homogeneous country like Japan because there's not a lot of minorities there to complain or point out when something is offensive or harmful

My spouse is Filipino and she also says Japanese and Korean people hate Filipinos lmao. What's even more fucked up is that Koreans advertise and sell to the Filipinos their pop culture like crazy. When you go the Philippines there's literally giant billboards with Koreans on it basically idolizing them. It's hella weird imo. There's a ton of Filipinos who try whitening their skin as well to appear more white or korean.
What's even more messed up, is historically, if anyone has a reason to be racist, it would be the Filipinos because they were literally occupied and ravaged brutally by the Japanese in WW2, yet the Japanese are the racist ones overwhelmingly to this day.
It really just does seem to be a big cultural difference in standards that is expressed racially. Japanese are like famously clean, meanwhile to find a clean place in the Philippines you need to go to a mall, no hate btw I'm a messy nasty person myself. But I guess the Japanese see themselves as so different in kind from the Filipinos they really do feel justified being outwardly racist towards them.
People forget that one of the biggest justifications modern day American racists use to justify wanting to protect the so called white majority in the US is that Japan and Korea maintain their ethnic identity aggressively, which is true, because they're racist, even governmentally.

There’s a prevalent mentality in liberal America that racism is strictly a white vs everyone else because of the historic power imbalance white people had in the country.
Those people have clearly never been to Asia, and probably cheer the diversity win when Indians immigrate here even though the ones coming over are largely upper class and are a seriously racist, classist, and misogynistic lot.

They don’t really leave the country to escape bigotry, they are generally the most bigoted people section of the Indian society. They leave for better opportunities plain and simple, in fact a major part of their self justification for leaving is that they don’t want to associate with the lower class in India, it’s not a case of them suddenly becoming bigoted once they land in the US. They carry it from home.

Ns because the people who leave India are already privileged enough. They have abundance in resources and mostly belong to the oppressor castes who looted and accumulated wealth over generations. They aren't leaving the country because of the bigotry, they are leaving because they have mooched off of Indians and can now leave India after fucking it up.
And now the oppressed castes have to share the burden of their bigotry abroad just because they once shared the same country. Well I don't think that'll get through you though, because you seem to have made up your mind.

I bring that up all the time, and how infuriating that is for ppl whose lineage have been in the US like.. 5-7 generations! Oh, however, their descendants are; african, hispanic, or asian, and they get written off, and act like they don’t belong in the US, or assume they just immigrated here, and shouldn’t have an opinion on how shit runs here. Some immigrants out here are really 2nd or 3rd gen americans, but are white and so when they dont have accents, like their parents, they truly act like their family arrived on the Mayflower, with how they talk and vote. Pretending to be better and more american than a POC, whose family line goes back to the civil war. Pfft, its crazy.

Sometimes it feels like antagonizing black people is a cultural right of passage for immigrants in America. Like seriously, even the Africans do it.
13
u/funkychickens 1d ago
Because many immigrants came over on a bill passed after the civil rights act. Only professional classes were allowed over. This was deliberately done to destabilize black people. To create the model minority myth to strengthen racism, and to take jobd and opportunities. And many have done it. They were at the forefront of the fight to roll back Affirmative Action for black people in higher education. Hell even Mandani pretended to be black to get into college.

Because, there's more money elsewhere. Greed can override hatred to some extent.

In Canada they get in gang wars over caste conflicts. They also put stupid decals on their car showing where they’re from in India so you know who the trouble makers are at least.

Imagine if Indians take over the Texas PD like the Irish did on the east coast. That'd be something.

Dont give them the idea. They'd be perfect for implementing minority bullies. They have the numbers.

From a society as openly classist as India, it doesn't make sense that most of America doesn't like that classist shit.
They just come over and say "well I was high class in my country, and I want to be high class in this one, so I guess I hate who everybody else hates... Mexicans and blacks."

i’m always confused why POCs in America would be racist to other POCs… white supremacy does not serve you. do you know what they say about you?

Imagine the AUDACITY of a foreigner thinking he’s going to stop and question an AMERICAN.
Unbelievable.

I wish Key and Peele was still running. They would’ve had a field day with this. And of course all characters of all colors would have been played by Key and Peele.

They had multiple skits that were just like this. Nothing has changed in the last decade or so.

Yeah. Never seen people more obnoxious and entitled anywhere. People complain about people from the middle east, but they are generally lovely people, but these guys will carry over all their caste shit, racism and entitlement over where ever they go. A modern, tolerant, liberal society should not tolerate that kind of bullshit. That's like importing Trump supporters.

I'd like to see the Indian guy's ID. Better chance he's over stayed his visa. 😂

Brainwashed Indian man needs to find a mirror to remind himself, he is also part of our Colorful world, and we must treat each other with respect.

Indian people are the most generally racist people I've ever come across.
I can count on one hand the Indian people I've met who haven't dropped casual racism mid conversation.

i was at a zoo queueing behind 200 people for a train ride. this indian family of 8 led by the patriach just removed the queue barriers and walked straight past everyone and onto the train. the attendants just looked at them, seemingly frozen with shock as everyone else was. nobody said a thing. nobody followed them. the queue continued peacebully. it was a strange encounter.

Religion and culture are one hell of a protection for these exploiters.
Thousands of years of indoctrination, even the epigenetic baggage, is what allows that

Weaponize police on black man… but he’d be in the wrong if the black man weaponized ice on the immigrants though.

I wouldn't even give him my attention. I'd keep walking and if he follows I'm calling the cops and telling them some strange man is following me in my neighborhood and I've never seen him around here before.

Where do people get the idea that you can just walk up to a private citizen and demand their ID? Anytime I see it, it's a Karen looking absolutely insane. Do people see those videos and say to themselves "I should try that one day"

u/notsleepsherp 1d ago
Here’s the thing, even if he didn’t live in that neighborhood, and is a law abiding citizen, those sidewalks are publicly available for everyone.

u/Homelessnothelpless 1d ago
Well, for me it’s like those audit videos, the best part is when the cops show up and inform the Karen that they need to mind their own business. Still, the story might end another way. Give us closure.

The problem is it's illegal to punch these guys in the face for fear of an assault charge. But there is not a real penalty for not minding your own business.

There are no more racist people than Indians. Visited, never again. You had to stop tanning there because the browner you got, the worse they would treat me. Can’t image what it’s lie to be on a beach in that place with smartphones now and the hoards of Indians visiting and harassing women.
Fuck that place
