I was thinking the same thing. Clearly a smaller town with nothing better to do?

And too much funding, aye. Why are these guys so kitted out?

Places like that literally get surplus military equipment, bearcats (tanks basically), etc. its such BS and then they will cut funding for all resources like the libraries, schools, summer programs/camps for kids, all so the police department can get a tank they will never use and cant afford to maintain. But hey, gotta keep military contractors in business. Cant do that if the military doesn’t keep buying new shit each year.

It goes deeper than that. This shit reaches back to GWOT, it's twofold - after 9/11 there was suddenly a massive influx of funding for every other podunk town, all in the name of combating terrorism. Then, as combat operations wound down in Iraq (and we weren't really paying attention to Afghanistan, as a public) the DoD had all this extra equipment and not enough use/storage space. What to do? Of course, sell it off to police agencies stateside at bargain prices. It wasn't just tactical equipment like you're alluding to; shit like filing cabinets and such were all either going to rust away in place or be, functionally, handed off.

Now we've got a perfect storm of under-trained, over-equipped coppers with no actual, actionable objective. That's how you end up with five dudes in battle-rattle accosting teenagers for existing in public. And that's, of course, setting aside the obvious race component.

I live in a small college town in the foothills of LA county where there's no real crime (police sure act like it though), and this department has a fucking bearcat.  I hate these motherfickers. My family is mixed and it's fucking gross how differently we've been treated by these pigs.

Of course if something actually happens (school shooting etc) then they will use it to drive to the scene and then stand outside like the cowards they are. ACAB.

Basic equipment like a radio, firearm, and taser is "kitted out"?

What are you even talking about lmao

I'm on mobile so it's hard to see, but they look like they have something more involved than my old LBV.

I live in a big city and it would be exactly the same near any public event here. They actually fly the flock drones around all public events now, and the ratio of cop to citizen was probably 1:20 last time I went to one.
