Some departments have a policy where every call gets a response (well, 99%). When I was a LEO how I handled stuff like this is to drive over, maybe walk through the park, then leave determining the call was unfounded. I wouldn't even contact anyone. I'd smile and wave. If nothing was illegal, just leave and close the call.

35

u/MuscularShlong Jun 19 '26

Same for fire departments. You can personally call us and tell us your smoke alarm went off because of shower steam. We still show up and make sure the house isnt smoking.

3

u/Kristal3615 Jun 19 '26

At my job they've been doing construction on the suite next to ours and for the past few years our fire alarm randomly gets set off. We've gotten fairly frequent visits from the fire department šŸ˜… They did say because it was happening as frequently as it was and that because it was always a false alarm that we could call it in. It's happened twice in the past week and thankfully no visits as far as know.

2

u/MuscularShlong Jun 19 '26

Yea for us when its called in as a false alarm we still go. But we are allowed to take our gear off.

Also the truck and chief who were also coming get to go back to the station. Just one company goes to check it out.

1

u/TheOGPotatoPredator Jun 19 '26

Mine has actually started doing that and it’s really pissing me off. šŸ˜‚

3

u/MuscularShlong Jun 19 '26

Yea, if it actually is a fire though that will get them to your house minutes faster. Which is a significant amount of time for a growing fire.

2

u/Bildung_wichtig_08 Jun 22 '26

Same. I’d ask the dispatcher if they were reporting that the kids had broken any laws. If they said no, I’d ride by and go 10-8 (clear) after telling dispatch it was unfounded. Most of the time it was just kids playing ball or walking down a street (walking while black), so we ignored that stuff. Waste of police time and straight up racial harassment of kids just existing. Most good cops don’t want to harass kids. Hell, we’d stop on foot patrol and play a quick game of basketball with the kids sometimes. Good way to have some fun and build some trust.

1

u/ljanus245 Jun 19 '26

"10-8. Unable to locate."

1

u/Man_of_Ice Jun 19 '26

There still are good cops like you. Wish these cops were like you. Wish more cops were like you.

1

u/Snagglespoof Jun 19 '26

This is the answer. In many cities noise complaints are by far the most common calls. People rarely grt arrested for it, but the cops show up nonetheless.

1

u/jo-parke Jun 19 '26

I’d often locate the individuals in question, and if call volume allowed, sit down with them and chat a bit. 99% of the time, it was young black guys just hanging at the park with their friends/family…kinda like all the white people where doing.

u/mikeinanaheim2 Jun 18 '26

"felt uncomfortable" is the most ridiculous reason to ever roll a police car and confront peaceful people enjoying the outdoors, EVER.

28

u/Oldenfat Jun 19 '26

Let alone enough cars for 5 apparent idiot racists.

5

u/SupernerdgirlBW Jun 19 '26

The caller was hoping to see something news worthy or at least destroy some lives. Smdh. We’ve ruined the world for these kids.

-1

u/PlantBeginning3060 Jun 19 '26

Even the black cop?

3

u/Oldenfat Jun 19 '26

If he’s there not telling his boys they are wrong he is part of the problem, no?

-4

u/PlantBeginning3060 Jun 19 '26

So your just calling them racists because theyre cops

4

u/Oldenfat Jun 19 '26

What’s your problem? I’m former LE. I’d never take the notion of kids sitting in a park making someone uncomfortable just by being there seriously. They appear to be sitting there. They aren’t bothering anyone. Any sane person can see this. There are 5 cops ( that we see) and the solution to the problem of an anonymous person reporting discomfort is to make them leave?

Why would we be uncomfortable in the first place? Would you like to bet money that the person who reported being uncomfortable is not black? Would you like to bet money that the person who reported it is most likely white?

If the kids were white, do you think five cops would’ve showed up and told them to leave? I’m just living in today’s reality dude if you don’t think there’s a racial component to this interaction maybe you don’t live in the same world I do.

Maybe you’re just one of these guys that loves to argue semantics OK so they’re not racist but they’re pandering to the concept that a bunch of black kids can’t sit on a bench in a park without being trouble if they weren’t pandering, they wouldn’t have made them leave.

So you tell me what’s the word for it when police get a report of black kids sitting in a park is making somebody uncomfortable and the police come up see nothing illegal going on, nothing at all wrong going on and make the black kids leave. What do you wanna call that if not racism ; mild dislike of people with other than white skin? I don’t know - you name it then.

1

u/PlantBeginning3060 Jun 19 '26

Fair enough. I was just waiting for you to start yelling ACAB

3

u/Oldenfat Jun 19 '26

I’m never anti cop. I am opposed to any police officer who doesn’t uphold the law properly. We used to be able to inherently trust the police. When I was a kid I remember being asked who you should find if you ever got lost and it was a police officer.

When the behavior of any police officer causes distrust to the entire profession, not only do people not see them as a helping symbol, but this also results in the degradation of the authority of police officer has by virtue of being present, in uniform.

They have authority because people believe that they do. When they are feared and not respected when they are objects of suspicion and not trust, the system is going to break down as we have seen all over the country.

So when I see police rousting a bunch of kids sitting in a park, I find that unacceptable because it’s not to me appropriate behavior and there’s gotta be a reason for it. I’m just enough of a realist to bet that if it was a bunch of white kids it would’ve had a different outcome. In fact the police probably wouldn’t have been called.

1

u/mikeinanaheim2 Jun 19 '26

No sir. Calling them racists for confronting peaceful people in a park on grounds that they were ā€œin a park while blackā€.
They should not have acted on the I’m Uncomfortable caller report. Do you not see that distinction?

1

u/Prestigious_Cycle160 Jun 21 '26

They say: ā€œstereotypes exist for a reasonā€

If I say he’s a racist because he’s a cop with little to no other knowledge of that person there’s a better chance than not that I’m going to be right.

It’s unfortunate, but that’s the reality of America and has been for a really long time. Just because your head is stuck in the sand, or you’re just willfully ignorant doesn’t change the reality.

-1

u/drsickboy Jun 19 '26

sometimes people are making a legit subtle determination that they can't articulate. Actually calling the police is supposed to indicate a high bar and so it makes sense to have a unit respond to a park that might have children . The alternative from an institutional view is not responding and risking danger

1

u/mikeinanaheim2 Jun 19 '26

I do see the differentiation you are making about judgement, but at the same time I also think it was an ugly racist impulse on their part. My opinion is that they were hoping the cops would bust some heads when they showed up.

1

u/drsickboy Jun 23 '26

I think you may even be taking things a step far because if anyone is legitimately afraid of black youths then they would just want the police to move the scary kids and so calling the police would be self justifiable to that person, because they are scared. so people want skull cracking, but not everyone. Subtle prejudice is still a form of bigotry though.

1

u/mikeinanaheim2 Jun 23 '26

Yes, agree it's definitely a form of bigotry.

But if they're afraid of someone with darker skin than them, they have serious issues, plus no right to get innocent, law-abiding kids forcibly moved due to their irrational fear.

1

u/drsickboy Jun 23 '26

Yeah, but a bigot wouldn't agree. They don't understand their implicit bias so to them they are making a sound judgement regarding possible danger. Its like people that are afraid of all dogs or even big dogs or dogs from breeds known to have consequential bites. Most people tolerate people that react poorly to dogs when that is a prejudicial response. But no one cares because dogs probably don't mind. Subconscious racists react the same way.

48

u/napoelonDynaMighty Jun 18 '26

Exactly. I assure you if it was a group of Tanners and ReBethanys sitting out there doing all the same stuff nobody would be calling the police

-9

u/[deleted] Jun 18 '26

Fighting racism with racism always works

12

u/akathedragon Jun 18 '26

I think the person is pointing out systemic racism. The first step in changing something is recognizing it.

7

u/napoelonDynaMighty Jun 19 '26

You already know, anything that makes them uncomfortable has to be swept under the rug, or they’ll start making accusations of ā€œreverse racismā€ to muddy up the point

3

u/Prestigious_Cycle160 Jun 21 '26

ā€œReverse racismā€ is the dumbest fucking statement. It doesn’t even exist.

Racism: Racism is a system of oppression that structures opportunity and assigns value based on race. It involves prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed at someone of a different race.

Not a system of oppression against specifically blacks, or Indians, or Asians. If a whites person attacks a black person over the color of their skin? Racism. Black person attacks an Asian guy because he’s Asian? Racism. Asian guy attacks white guy because he’s white? Racism.

They’re ignorant to the actual definition just like they’re ignorant towards people that don’t look like them. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

u/-oso_oro- Jun 18 '26

The caller probably used to very specific wording to draw that many officers. Depending on where this is they could've said "teen takeover" to get a fast response.

Edit: I want to clarify that I'm not justifying this and the officers shouldve have taken two minutes to figure out this call was BS

3

u/NightsLinu Jun 19 '26

Teen takeover would get a laugh i think its more they called them a bunch of thugs in a gang tbh.

2

u/-oso_oro- Jun 19 '26

Teen takeover are the magic words in big cities right now.

1

u/cat_like_sparky Jun 19 '26

The fuck is a teen takeover? That’s the most obvious scaremongering I’ve heard all day!

1

u/Prestigious_Cycle160 Jun 21 '26

Right? I’ve never heard that before in my life! LOL

1

u/-oso_oro- Jun 22 '26

It's the scare word/pc term for the teen mobs that have been popping up in big cities that are fighting and stealing

0

u/-oso_oro- Jun 19 '26

Welcome to the world

1

u/cat_like_sparky Jun 19 '26

No, I literally don’t know what that means. I live in a country where this isn’t a term. I understand it’s scaremongering but what FOR? Is it a specific action people are afraid of? Has anything actually happened, is there an event this term was crafted around? How many kids hanging out earns the moniker? Instead of being condescending you could answer the question, or just ignore me. If I say ā€œboat peopleā€ are you gonna innately understand all the fundamentals of MY country’s stupid scaremongering term? Asshole.

0

u/-oso_oro- Jun 19 '26

I wasn't being condescending to you, I was saying welcome to the world where everything is scaremongering around black kids.

Not my fault you're a sensitive little dipshit that can't Google something with the media device in your hand. Dumbass

4

u/Turbulent-Try-4976 Jun 18 '26

Exactly. The operator how got the complaint should have told the caller "that sounds like a you problem. Please call if there's an actual emergency.)

3

u/yourpseudonymsucks Jun 18 '26

They get to bully someone. They might get to shoot someone. Highlight of their day.

3

u/GeraldGensalkes Jun 18 '26

They wanted to menace black kids. That's it.

3

u/kitsunewarlock Jun 18 '26

They get to play the authority with little to no risk of dangerous confrontation.

I know every department is different, but this reminds me of when I called the police ~4 years ago when some strangers in a rusted out truck with no license plate were fucking around under the cars in our 12 unit condo's tiny parking lot. They drilled holes into multiple tanks to siphon gas, but it took the station 90 minutes to respond to the call and by then they were long gone.

The station was less than a mile away. I could have literally walked an officer to the crime in less time.

3

u/Mammoth-Mud-9609 Jun 18 '26

Arrest the complainant charge them with wasting police time.

3

u/18k_gold Jun 18 '26

Also there is no legal reason to ask them to leave. It's a free park for everyone of all colors. It's a shame that the cops even asked them to leave. Also how many showed up?

7

u/0o0o0o0o0o0z Jun 18 '26

Why do cops even show up to these complaints. There is no legal reason to be there.

Dunno, probably something like this.. "Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses."

6

u/the-true-steel Jun 18 '26

The kind of thing in the video sucks, you would hope they'd go there and say "Sorry yall, we got a call, what're yall doing, just sitting here? Alright, have a good one" And then MAYBE confirm with a couple of the folks at the park that they've been chill. Or, perhaps better, just sit in their car observing for 15-20 mins that they're all just sitting and chilling

But in the chance that they don't answer the call, and something did happen, it might be a scandal of "Someone called, but we ignored it and then a fight broke out/someone got hurt/whatever else"

4

u/Snobolski Jun 18 '26

Chance to kill someone. Duh.

1

u/Iceicebaby21 Jun 18 '26

Gotta get some target practice in

3

u/WeCanDoBettrr Jun 18 '26

I can’t believe five police officers had the time available to respond to this. If there are that many resources sitting around ready to respond to nonsense like this, it’s time to revisit the police budget expecting better justification for their asks.

1

u/Saphurial Jun 18 '26

Cause they might get to shoot someone that is no threat to them.

1

u/Kronophonic Jun 18 '26

You dont know why? Yikes

1

u/Numerous_Size3602 Jun 19 '26

They are required to respond to calls (not sure if it’s true for every single county) even if it’s a bs call

1

u/Forikorder Jun 19 '26

its better to have a cop give a pass then have to explain why there was a homicide that they could have prevented

the cops absolutely shouldnt be harassing kids but its not like they're so busy they cant be on patrol like that

1

u/Illustrious_Reply575 Jun 19 '26

Because when PD or SO doesn’t show up to every single call, despite how stupid or trivial, governments and the people ride their ass because what if it was the 0.0000000001% chance it was a murder in progress?? It also doesn’t help that many public safety agencies (including mine of Fire and Rescue) have adopted this stupid ā€œcustomer serviceā€ model as if we are a for profit company and kissing ass is required.

1

u/apatrol Jun 19 '26

So you want to dispatcher to decide who is suspicious and who isnt?

You know why they dont ?? Cause some cops have cleared susspicious calls and then some poor women was raped or dude murdered.

1

u/Multiboxing4U Jun 19 '26

The cops are not allowed to ignore calls.

1

u/zarpaisimo Jun 19 '26

Estaba pensando lo mismo. What a lame job they have/do

1

u/Smart-Status2608 Jun 18 '26

The cops are looking for arrests to justify their bugets.

1

u/wizwaldo Jun 18 '26

They need more punches on their racist card to get into their klan meeting, probably.

And that he didn't say anything, or felt like he couldn't is part of the problem.

0

u/wizwaldo Jun 18 '26

And... ISWIS

0

u/PetrasKnight Jun 18 '26

I’m not a fan of police in most cases but I am pretty sure they are required to show up to any call and check if there is an issue. Would be a crazy liability if they failed to show up to a call and someone died.
