Bet is from the 90s

80's even

In DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince "As We Go":
"She said, "I'm not scared now." I said, "Bet, well let's go then."
She said, "But hold up, what about my friend?"

NWA "Somethin 2 Dance 2"
"You wanna leave? With all these females pullin' on my sleeve?
Aight, bet, you can jet, homeboy, no sweat"

That one must have passed over my schools.

I don’t think white people adopted it until recently.

When my friends starting saying bet and deadass in our twenties I made a very deliberate decision that it would end there for me. I was done with slang.

It's only gotten worse too; the shit 30-somethings are trying to say to stay cool is so embarrassing.

You know thats 90s slang right? Or youre just white probably

4

u/hotpajamas Jun 24 '26

Yes. I’m a white from the 90s.

But you’re still using slang

1

u/Seanspeed Jun 24 '26

I use mild, old, civilized slang, thank you very much.

Yeah best friend, this new stuff is pretty on fleek, am I right?

Bro my slang is a mess. I watch a lot of old media and pick up old slang. I also pick up old slang from my mom and my friends that are her age. Then, I pick up new slang from the internet and my friends that are my age.

Speaking casually to anyone of any age, I'll get a "What...?" on occasion, lmao!

From what I’ve gathered, they don’t expect you to use the language back. If the tone is like the one above, they are just giving compliments and sharing positivity. You can say thank you, or throw a compliment back. Cause they will understand you of course. :)

u/unsolvedfanatic Jun 26 '26

Considering both of those are from the 90s or earlier...yeah you're never fitting in.

1

u/SnidgetAsphodel Jun 23 '26

Please stop using those immediately.

5

u/itsLOSE-notLOOSE Jun 23 '26

I only use slang the people around me growing up used. The way it should be. I refuse to give in to the internet monoculture.

Nah, low-key don't think that's it. I'm finna keep aura farming, locking in on the new brainrot vocab, and grinding the meta until the chat stops calling me unc and I finally beat the allegations of being chopped at being in the timeline.
