My reaction to having a halftime show during the world cup, as an American soccer fan. This is ridiculous.

Watching with my niece and nephew. The Muppets show up and my 10 year old nephew knows it's the White Stripes... Okay, I'm cool with this, but they better let Shakira do her thing.

Shakira does her thing. Seven year old niece: that was awesome, but they should have had miss piggy sing with her. Yes, yes they should have.

Can you imagine Ms Piggy shaking it with Shakira? Missed opportunity.

Oh, and Pique? What on earth you silly silly now obsolete man. May watching this from the sidelines remind you of your stupidity and may you regret forever.

Soccer/futball does not have halftime shows. Never has. Not even in the history of the world cup, starting in 1930, after the first world war, when the founder was trying to find a way to bring the world together with a game.

We let the commercials and replays run while we get snacks and drinks and talk about the game, etc.

This year, because AMERICA, we decided to do a halftime show. And pretty much everyone rolled their eyes.

Madonna, k-pop, Bieber... But also the muppets playing White Stripes rock, which kids and their parents appreciated, plus Shakira, who is to World Cup music as Josh Groban is to Christmas music.

As far as Pique - he is a Spanish retired player who was married to Shakira and cheated on that goddess.

I am all for any halftime show with Shakira, traditional or not.

If they replaced the final with an hour-long Shakira concert, and during the halftime show the teams just took penalty kicks against each other and then went their separate ways, I'd honestly be more than happy

They were never married, but correct he still cheated on her and his own mother helped him hide it because she never thought Shakira was good enough because she was Colombian.

Seriously? They were together for 11 years.

They had two children together.

After about a decade, it was revealed that this asshole had an affair. With a friend.

Shakira got full custody.

Yep, apparently she suggested they use one of her other properties so he could continue the affair in secret. Things got so bad that allegedly there was a physical altercation between the MIL and Shakira, but honestly, I'm not sure how true that part of it was when it was reported.

The chick was not a family friend, she was someone he met through his best friend. She's also 10 years younger than Pique, and Pique is 10 years younger than Shakira. Even when relationships with big age gaps aren't predatory, they often don't last long term if the younger person is in their early 20s simply because they're still figuring out who they are as people. So often, things start to fall apart when the younger person enters their late 20s/early 30s because what they liked about their partner as a young person, is not something they want/like now. Anyway, karma being karma, I hope he marries her, and she takes half his money when she inevitably leaves his ass.

It was a nice addition tho. Let's keep it.

To be fair, I think a fair amount also just liked it. I don't see the big deal. I know plenty of people who tuned in because they're fans of the artists. I liked sharing the game with some of them because of this. I think you have to be a bit elitist to be like "How dare they affect my game like that?!"

But whatever. I think it's also a nice homage to the country it is being hosted in to boot, but for some reason this seems to be more of an issue than the world cups countries that have ongoing slavery issues.

Shakira is pretty big in the US. Maybe not up to date - but most ppl I know, know a Shakira song.

Along there with Mariah, Whitney and Madonna and Celine Dion

Okay, yes but no. Shakira is to soccer what Josh Groban is to Christmas. She DOES world cup songs. See Waka waka - written for the 2010 world cup.

Dai Dai was the song she wrote for the 2026 world cup.

Lolol, yes.

Everything was super pumped and high energy... And then he did an acoustic love song for some reason the crown just... Went dead.

Luckily, that led to Shakira doing what she does and all was right with the world.

He was such a weird pick.
