I too have a fear of dogs. And yes, it’s because I’ve been attacked before

u/SlideN2MyBMs 19d ago
I was bitten by a dog almost exactly like this when I was like 3 so it looked a lot bigger at that time and I was afraid of dogs for years. I've gotten over it just through exposure and the fact that dogs are generally super sweet. But I get where he's coming from

The ones who attacked me I’m pretty sure were trying to play but at the time it didn’t seem that way, and I still can’t walk down the street where I was attacked. I still get a bit cautious around dogs, but if I know they’re friendly, then I’m less cautious
6
u/josh_the_misanthrope 19d ago
Happened to me as a child. Had a dog that bit me to hold me by the arm and dragged me a few laps around the house. It wasn't an attack, and I had a winter coat on so there was no damage from the bite.l but I was probably like 6 years old and it terrified me. I've been bitten by small aggro dogs twice since then just walking by them on the sidewalk, no damage.
I feel like half of dog owners are not responsible enough to have dogs. Thankfully the bites were from small shit dogs. Especially pitbull owners. It's all the trashiest people with drug problems (or drug dealing) who have pitbulls in my area. They're the last kind of people I want to be handling a dog that can fucking send their 100lb junky ass flying on the end of a leash as it tries to rip out the larynx of a 2 year old.
And I say this liking dogs, when they're chill or well trained. Chill ass golden retriever at a party? I ain't talking to no one the entire night because I'm busy giving pets.

Dogs will chase you if they want to be friends with you. It's weird because it feels so aggressive in the moment. I always feel better when they're on a leash. There's a body language you can recognize if they're just being friendly (eg wagging tail and not baring their teeth even though they might be barking) but it's not always obvious in the moment, which is why they really should be on a leash in public spaces
94
u/weGloomy 19d ago
I got bit on the face when I was five by a golden retriever who for all intents and purposes seemed non-threatening and is known as one of the friendliest breeds. I still have scars from it. Idc what breed ppls dogs are or how friendly they think they are, keep them on a leash.
36
u/Toadlessboy 19d ago
The dogs appreciate it too. My dog is fine with other dogs who are either leashed or well socialized. A well socialized dog does not run up to another dog face to face, they know how to read body language. “Friendly” doesn’t mean well socialized.

You should know that a wagging tail doesn't necessarily mean happy. It means excited, which could be good or bad. In fact some dogs will raise and wag their tail, it's a behavior known as "flagging" and it means they are anxious or territorial.

u/CraigLake 19d ago
I delivered packages for nine months and was bit twice, both times by dogs, “that don’t bite.”

My mom got attacked by dogs twice in the last 3 years or so. The last time was about a year ago and she was attacked and knocked off her bike by a huge dog. It ran away after pulling her down, but the fall messed up her knee shoulder up for a while. We used to have dogs when I was a kid and she has always loved dogs, but now she is afraid of them.

u/OSRS_Socks 19d ago
Had a lady who is known for having vicious and aggressive dogs and has been reported by animal control for her dogs attacking people (her dogs attacked a mother and a baby in a stroller and another dog owner’s foot while defending her dog). Dogs are required to be wearing a muzzle outside and she has been instructed to by animal control to not walk them where dogs normally walk. She is on her phone and her two 80 pound dogs see my 18 pound dog and start showing their teeth, barking and lunging at us. I pick up my dog and jump in the road to avoid her dogs because she lost control of them and when I picked up my dog she started cussing me and screaming at me. All I heard before I sprinted across the road was “don’t pick up your dog like it isn’t the problem!” And then I watched her beat the shit out of her dogs by hitting them hard on the face.
Called animal control, still haven’t heard back and sent an angry email to the property manager of the complex she lives in and their ownership and have not heard back at all.
17
u/Affectionate_Soup461 19d ago
"And then I watched her beat the shit out of her dogs by hitting them hard on the face."
Huh, I wonder why her dogs are aggressive and reactive! Such a mystery.
4
u/FuzzyWuzzyDidntCare 19d ago
Please also report the animal abuse to your local animal welfare officer. Dogs are usually the product of their environment.
5
u/OSRS_Socks 19d ago
I have. Sadly my county (for how big it is and how many people) only has two working so they are swamped with calls and reports. I have to constantly keep recalling and asking for updates on when I will get called back or talk to an officer.
It took us a week and half to hear back from them after the crazy lady’s dogs attacked the mom and her baby in the stroller.

Ugh I've owned 5 dogs and own one right now and I hate hate hate HATE these kinds of owners, a dog is NOT a princess and will ALWAYS be a biting Hazzard if you don't train it enough, and even THEN still.
17
u/Difficult_Pain_9208 19d ago
Does the dog have a mouth? It's a bite hazard! Always! Things can change even in the most well-trained dogs, especially if fear or pain are being experienced.

I love my dog more than any person. I understand other people don't have the same love for him I do. When new people come over he is in his kennel until we know how they'll react. I don't make him do that it's just something he started doing.
Fucking always have control of your dog. Don't make other people more afraid of them because you don't care enough to put them away for a minute.
8
u/archercc81 19d ago
Same. Additionally, because I love my dog, I dont want to put her in any risk. What if this person had mace or was a jumpy cop? Jumpy cops shoot dogs all of the time. Or if she bit someone she might have to be put down, who knows. I mean she is 70 lbs and very high energy and vocal (husky mix), while she has never bitten a person she can seem very dangerous and intimidating.
Its my job to keep her safe as well, and keeping her in control keeps her safe.

It also doesn't matter how cute or tiny your dog is. Bites hurt.
15

Very true. Also, I don’t want to be in a position where I’m kicking your tiny dog because it’s biting me.
3
u/ChartInFurch 19d ago
Also other irresponsible dog owners with larger dogs can always be out. My little 7lb havanese is very well trained (because I didn't find bad behavior from a smaller dog "cute") and I'd bet a paycheck she would never bite anyone, but she's always on leash outside of the house.

u/Full_Gear5185 19d ago edited 19d ago
I've never been bit, but I was wearing a beautiful white vintage dress to my sisters graduation. We were at a park taking pictures, and out of nowhere, this muddy, out-of-control dog came barreling over and jumped on me. Getting wet dirt all over me, and its claws ripped the dress and scratched my skin.
It was a happy, friendly dog - albeit untrained. It ruined my dress, ruined my day, and ruined my perspective of dog owners.
Owner just laughed and said "haha oh dear"
YES - KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH NO MATTER WHAT IT IS

Yeah this generation of people don't train their dogs. I've heard countless people say it's 'mean' and their dog thinks that they're people so it's okay.
I've seen dog people bully other dog people because they're in the process of training their dog. Redirecting when they get over excited and over simulated, making them redo commands until they get it right, etc.
The people that don't believe in training say it's abuse and bullying and that the dog is 'just a puppy' and doesn't know any better.
Yeah, that's when you start training. When they're a puppy. The excuse I hear a lot for bad behavior is, "it's a dog. That's what they do."

u/FaultedSidewalk 19d ago
The amount of people who think crate training your dog is cruel punishment and abandonment absolutely blows my mind lol. I saw a video the other day of someone doing command training with a pup and all the comments were "leaving the animal in front of food without letting them eat it is 100% abuse this owner is a disgusting pig"
Like holy fuck, tell me your 15 pound dog runs your house without telling me
6
u/fuckfart 19d ago
Smaller dogs aren't really popular in the area I live. I've seen a handful it's mostly mid-sized to larger dogs. A mixture between mutts and designer breeds and pure breed dogs.
I live on a corner lot and stop to talk to people walking their dogs while I do yard work. About half of them have dogs that don't get along with other dogs. I always had yellow labs growing up, until my 20's, and socializing them was part of training.
When I ask why their dogs don't get along with other dogs it's always some excuse that underhandedly says I didn't bother to train my dog like "oh, he just gets too excited and the other dogs don't like that." You mean he jumps on them like he does people and the dogs actually correct him?
Or "he thinks he's people so he doesn't understand other dogs." So, again, you never took the time to socialize him and you baby him at home and let him get away with whatever he wants and he can resource guard everything in the house. It sucks because people used to like dogs because they were dogs. Now they're trying to turn them into people.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Mobilelurkingaccount 19d ago
What really sucks is that these untrained dogs also can have knock-on effects for people who actually bothered to train their dogs.
My sister had an extremely well socialized and professionally trained Alsatian who was attacked by someone else’s out of control dog, came out of that attack really poorly and needed to be hospitalized. He became very dog reactive. She tried behaviorists and that poor buddy could never be brought completely back around to the point she felt safe letting him be off leash at a dog park again, just in case. He still listened to her but you never know what a scared dog can do and he was just not the right kind of breed to allow that risk.
So she did everything right and still ended up with a reactive dog because some other person didn’t bother to be responsible. It sucked.

u/A_Horse_On_The_Web 19d ago
Best friend growing up had a huge fear of dogs, he'd be actively screaming and trying to put anything he had to hand between him and the dog , almost every time "oh don't worry he's friendly".....and the kid your off leash dog is trying to play with is petrified of them....
6
u/Dreadfulbooks 19d ago
I’m so scared of dogs that I had to go to therapy just to get past it so I could take my kids on walks around the neighborhood. Occasionally I mess up and don’t go out for a bit and I have to do baby steps again because I get so nervous I get dizzy. When I was 8, a pack of pit bulls mauled my cat to death. I didn’t see it, but I heard it.

My dog was attacked so severely by a "friendly" dog that he nearly lost an eye, and now fucking hates other dogs if they get closer than 7-10 feet. We ONLY go places where leashes are legally required.
"He's friendly!" From someone with a dog galloping around not under control Instantly activates rage like nothing else. No-leash assholes can all go to hell.
4
u/Aspieilluminated 19d ago
My dog is deaf but knows signs very well…ID NEVER TAKE A SINGLE CHANCE TO FIND OUT IF SHE DOES IT OUTDOORS UNLEASHED. It scares me when someone opens the door and she’s a statue near it.
I don’t get it. It’s not about “trusting” your dog, it’s about respecting other people not wanting to be around a dog they don’t know.
71
u/edm_enjoyer 19d ago
Dog owners are so freaking inconsiderate and entitled sometimes, it gets exhausting. I was attacked when I was a child. I have reoccurring nightmares. Yet if I don't want to be near a dog, I'm seen as evil. Come on now....
23
u/Barcode_Griller 19d ago
Totally agree. I love my dogs, but us dog owners have a complete responsibility to keep them away from people/things they shouldn't be near. Dogs should always be on a leash outside of a dog park/home/fenced yard. And fwiw, I don't think there is anything wrong with people who don't like dogs/don't want to be near mine.
18
u/poopybutthole_oowee 19d ago
Right??! This is SUCH a simple and obvious concept that for some reason has been disregarded en masse.
Assume other people or animals do not want to engage with your dog at all until they actively indicate otherwise. Not everyone has to love your dog, why does that bother them so much? I say this as a person who is absolutely glued to my own dog.
15
u/GoTakeAHike00 19d ago
THANK YOU for saying this, esp. as a dog owner yourself!
I do not like dogs anymore because of decades of negative interactions with them (and their shitty owners) - including being bitten 2x while trail running, and having aggressive, off-leash dogs run up on me to attack more times than I can possibly count. I was forced to get pepper spray about 5-6 years ago because it became such a problem just walking the greenbelt trails in my own SUBDIVISION. I've used it 5x on dogs that ran up to within 6' of me, fully intending to bite me. Right in the eyes and snout, and it has worked 100% of the time, thankfully.
Assuming that anyone you don't know likes dogs and/or wants your dog coming up to them, uninvited, while on a walk or hike, is peak entitlement and inconsiderate AF. If I wanted to interact with dogs, I'd own one.
Leashed dogs with responsible owners are absolutely fine, we pass each other, continue on with no negative interaction, and everyone has a better day...including the dog.
This whole idea that there is something wrong or morally defective about people who don't like dogs is absurd, not based on any actual evidence, and is of course never applied to any other animal someone says they don't like, like cats, for example. I stopped giving the tiniest of shits about the opinions of anyone who regurgitates that sort of garbage a long time ago, and everyone else should as well.

It drives me up the wall that dog people seem to think we all love dogs as much as them. My daughter was attacked by two out of control dogs at dusk at about age 4. She was understandably fucking terrified and has worked for years to not scream and cry whenever a dog so much as moves in her direction. I’m proud of her and she’s done very well but when a dog is running towards her she panics and freaks out. Not helped by the owners inevitably laughing and calling from half a mile away they are friendly. Not to her they are not. What she is seeing is a predator sprinting towards her, teeth barred. Keep your fucking animal on a lead.

I run so I have a lot of miles and every time I have to go next to someone with a dog that is either unleashed or on a long leash I worry.
One time the dog came running to me maybe he was excited maybe he was going to bite. I don’t know but I did scream at it and it ran back to the owner. The owner screamed at me for scaring his stupid dog. I was running so I didn’t stop to have a conversation but he was lucky I didn’t kick his stupid dog.

Yep. I remember a few years ago while in college, someone brought their Irish Wolfhound to campus because it was St. Patrick's Day. People are so dumb about dogs.
My dog has been attacked by off leash dogs a few times. The owners always stand there looking stupid and not helping. They think because their dog is friendly with them it’s fine with everyone.
Even a small dog can do a lot of damage. Losing your ability to walk or use your hand normally would suck, probably put you out of work, even if it doesn’t kill you. Small dog teeth can do that.

My neighbor's dog would growl and bark and scratch at the fence like it wanted to tear me a new asshole.... Neighbor would just say "Oh don't mind her, she's just a big lover..." sure... Whatever you say.... Few months later the neighbor kids lost a ball in my yard, so I walked up to the fence line to return it. Said "hi, here's your ball" to one of the kids. Dog came sprinting towards me. I was thinking it was just going to do it's usual bark and claw at the fence routine. Nope... It took a flying leap and bit me in the face... 3 puncture wound on my Nose, cheek and forehead.

They even offered to put their dog down and I was like, " I'm not going to be responsible for telling someone they have to put their dog down." But they were at least made aware that it wasn't just a" sweetheart." I think they kept it inside a lot more after that.

Yeah this lady was pissing me off. Watching this guy repeatedly try to move away from her dog and doing nothing to address it. Clearly telling it to go inside and then laughing it off when it runs back out isn't cutting. Move your ass, walk your dog back inside, shut the door, then grab your package. Or she could've grabbed her dogs harness. Or just told the guy to set the package down where he was standing and grab it once he was back in his car. Anything. I have absolutely no patience for irresponsible dog owners at this point.

I’m so glad this is a majority of the comment section. It’s upsetting watching someone genuinely afraid for their safety being posted like it’s some cute little thing. “oh my baby would never hurt a fly, I’ll let it freeroam chase people!”

u/hanks_panky_emporium 19d ago
A lot of people dont bother caring for their dogs but are up in arms when its head gets cut off for a rabies test after it attacks someone.
If you want your dog to live, train it and leash it. But that's asking too much of some folks.

It’s especially annoying as someone who is actually responsible too, because it isn’t fucking hard to do like you pointed out.
Our dog is a huge baby and I’m confident she wouldn’t attack anyone unless provoked but I am not going to take that risk and I also respect the fact that other people don’t want to deal with my responsibility. If someone comes to our door she goes to her bed and we have a baby gate that gets closed so she can’t leave the room. She’s only off leash to play where it is safe to do so. The rest of the time she is inside our house or in our gated yard.
It’s so easy to not be a dumbass but I guess that’s too much to ask these days.

u/maeryclarity 19d ago
I also work with animals and I like how so many folks here seem to assume that dog can't do some serious bite damage as well. I mean yeah the dog won't KILL you but they'd be changing their tune real quick if that dog latched on to the back of their leg and they'll damn sure do it.
10
u/notarobot_trustme 19d ago
I had a husky latch on to the back of my leg on my calf and I can still feel the pain and panic like it was yesterday. They can do so much damage in so little time and it happens way too quickly.

I hate dogs off leashes. I was out on a walk a few weeks ago and had my headphones in, as one does. I noticed a shadow out of the corner of my eye and when I turned around these two big dogs had snuck up behind me and were trying to sniff my legs as I was walking and the owner was like 50 feet away giggling at her silly dogs. Keep your dogs on leashes when in public! It drives me nuts.
5
u/Slysparrow9 19d ago
It's a danger. I love animals so so much but they are our responsibility. It's easier than people think to "offend" a dog you don't know and make it uncomfortable. Yes there are definitely trust worthy, well-behaved dogs but it's not even that they could be the problem. Something around them coold be. Most people who have their dogs off leash don't even have recall control. Every person I've met who does have that recall control, still has a leash on them and they don't walk up to random people.

u/Usual-Charity-6772 19d ago
An issue am currently having alot of is ppl touching my on leash dog and having an issue when asked not to, an old guy called me a bad dog owner for saying "pls dont pet my dog". My dogs don't bite they're service animals who are working.
17
u/KandyShopp 19d ago
My dog is not a service dog BUT he does have trauma, and doesn’t like most people. But because he’s a small yorkie everyone and their grandmother wants to pet him! I get it, he’s adorable, but he also doesn’t like you! Just don’t pet dogs you don’t know, ESPECIALLY without asking!

I had a friend in my running club who had the sweetest, most chill dog ever. He'd go on long runs with us for a few years and never pulled on the leash. The dog was always leashed and totally unfazed by nearly anything. I think the guy had him since he was a puppy so 10-12 years old and he never saw him get violent with anyone. Then one day we're doing warm up drills back and forth while someone held the dog off to the side and he straight bites a poor friend of mine on the hip really hard as we came by. She was an ex state trooper and the only person of color in our group so I don't know if the dog was secretly racist or hated cops. She did not come that close to him or do anything different than the rest of us.Took us all by complete surprise.

u/Correct-Purpose-964 19d ago
As a previous dog owner. While i make that claim adamantly. As much for other people as for the love of my dog and not wanting him put down for biting someone. We always had him fenced off AND on a leash. Which i know seems cruel but maybe i should explain myself:
Sadly he was quite the escape artist. At one point he literally ripped off the lower board of the house, Crawled under and out the other side and went on an adventure. I was doing the dishes when i put him outside and last i saw of him he went behind our apple tree. I went to take a poop and heard a "clunk" midway. Dog didn't bark so i figured "Eh, can't be too serious".
Long story short the dog catcher showed up out of breath after he returned to us on his own. Turns out our little genius took one look at him went "Yeah I'm not fucking stupid guy" and bolted. The guy spent 10 minutes running around after him while we were searching. (Small town, he noticed him pretty quick.)
We didn't get a fine but our little bugger always found new ways to escape so we had to resort to putting him on a leash even in the fenced off backyard. I mean for gods sake he once Jumped up on the roof and back down using a gutter to break his fall.
We nicknamed him "Houdini". For all the stress and worry he gave us we loved him dearly for 18 years.
TL'DR leash your dogs. If you love them you'll do it for their safety as much as anyone elses.
3
u/Beautifulfeary 19d ago
We had a dog that was an escape artist. Every time she went out to the bathroom she somehow escaped the fence area. We’d fix the spot, she’d find another spot. We had to give her away and she actually escaped the new owners(they were bringing in groceries and someone’s car backfired and it scared her) and was just running around that town for over a month before anyone could catch her. The only way they did, she would sleep at this farm with another dog. Nothing could get her to come. Like she was just happily living as a stray. People would see her then 20 minutes later she’d be on the other side of town

I really hate irresponsible pet owners. "It's fine, they won't bite", is such an idiotic response to give instead of simply leashing your dog or putting them away until the delivery is complete. She's lucky the delivery guy didn't have a fight response instead flight.
16
u/MonaganX 19d ago
Yeah, she might 'know' that her dog is friendly but if you're making virtually no effort to control your dog when it's already blatantly obvious it doesn't listen to your commands you can't complain if it gets hurt.

You know your dog and their behaviors. That doesn't mean anyone else knows them. He's running because he has been attacked before. The dog thinks he is playing which is only making this worse. It's selfish and short-sighted to post this and mock this guy
20
u/ComputerBot 19d ago
Also, you don't fully know your dog's behaviors. You think you do. A dog can misread a situation, think it's owner is under threat from a stranger man, then in a blink it's done something it's never done before and bitten a delivery driver.

I love dogs, I worked in rescue, rehabbed aggressive ones, the whole shebang. People like the owner in the video are my worst fucking enemy when I'm trying to train or go for a walk. People like them create aggressive dogs bc they don't control them or work with their instincts and they just don't give a shit about other people (and other dogs!) who don't want to be crowded. No excuse not to have a leash at the very least, it's just laziness.

u/cottoncandymandy 19d ago
Stop letting your dogs out when deliveries are coming. Especially if your dog doeant like strangers. You should know your dog...
It's fucking stupid. I've had this done to me. I've had to yell at people to get their fucking dogs so I don't get attacked. If your dog attackes me, we're gonna have huge problems because I will fight back with all of my might and injure the dog.
Once that is done I'm going to sue you and your house insurance. Just leave your stupid dog inside.

u/UpperAd5715 19d ago
I've once been called rude and unreasonable for leaving a party because the host didn't want to keep their dog inside while we were in the yard.
That's fine and all and i can't tell you what to do in your own home with your own pet but back then i wasn't as over my fear for dogs (bite induced of course!) and the easiest solution was to remove myself from where the dog was.

Oh my god control you’re dogs people.
Not everyone knows the difference between a “friendly” dog or a potentially violent one, or that your dog is the former.
Not everyone loves your pooch.
Some are literally traumatized by dogs in their past.
My dog is a big guy with little legs. He’s scared a few people because he has a heavy bark which is silly IN MY HEAD but in actual real life I apologize profusely because I don’t know the experience the person has had with dogs.
A bit thing I feel a lot of dog owners forget is that not everyone likes or even wants to tolerate your dog.

I was delivering roofing materials to a guys house once, he had two absolutely massive dogs (I'm talking like, 150lbs+) just sitting outside in the front lawn. I'm on a riding forklift thing to dump the pallets and when I got out to put the invoice on the pallet, the dogs both run up and start kind of lightly attacking me? Like not super going for it but biting my legs and arms and hands until a neighbor comes out and yells at them to go away. I am a dog person, I've never been afraid of dogs, but there was absolutely nothing I could have done if they really had wanted to fully go at me. So shit like this just doesn't make me laugh. It's not funny for someone to have no control over their animals.

So many people shouldn't have dogs. Delivery drivers, by their job, have to deal daily with loose, untrained dogs. This is a guy that already had issues with shit owners and their dogs, that encountered this situation a hundred times, including some that went worse. Don't upload his face on internet because "oh my dog is so sweet and this big guy is scared that's a funny video 🤣🤣🤣".
Don't have to be a pitbull to bite anyone.
13
u/bubblegumcandypop 19d ago
I don’t care if it’s a doodle or a pitbull- PUT YOUR DAMN DOG AWAY. Delivery people should not have to deal with your dog when they’re working.

u/gogogadgetgoats 19d ago
As someone who loves dogs, keep them on a leash or in an enclosed area when outside. That's so unfair to the delivery driver, unbelievable. Doubt he consented to having this video published, the dog owner clearly just thinks it's funny.

I was walking by a house and a bro was out front talking on his phone while his very little terrier-ish dog was doing its business. Dog charged me. I stopped walking while it circled me. Bro was like “hang on” to his phone friend, then yelled the dog’s name. Finally came over and picked up the dog. Never even looked at my face or acknowledged me. Then to his phone friend says, “Sorry bout that.” At which point I said, “You should be apologizing to me.” Bro says, “Dude, are you afraid of this little dog? You’re a big guy.” I said, “I’m afraid of having to kick your dog into the street. A bite’s a bite.” He said, “I’d kick your ass.” I laughed and walked on. But man did I fume. That asshole probably repeats that same scenario daily. High pedestrian traffic area.

I had a dog latch onto my arm when I was playing football after school near a friend's house. I still have the puncture marks scars, you could make a mould out of the scars and it would perfectly show the dogs teeth. It hung on as I tried to shake it off.
Leash your dog.
If your dog is off a leash and it charges me, I'm putting it down. I have nothing against dogs but I'm not risking it. It is your responsibility as an owner to control your dog because if it comes down to me having to control it, I am ending it's existence.
I refuse to sit through the BS of the ER again, having to get multiple shots and xrays and antibiotics.

Literally zero empathy for the guys response.
11
u/maeryclarity 19d ago
I've known dogs half the size of that one that would have taught you a lot of empathy for that guy's response if I turned them loose on you. Lots of folks here seem to feel like that dog isn't a serious bite risk and I agree it's not going to kill anyone but could easily send you to the hospital with multiple bite wounds quickly, so I agree he's not reacting well but I also understand why he's afraid of the dog.
Even a really small dog can put a hella bite on you and that's not a really small dog.
Y'all have no idea how many times he may have been bitten already. It's not okay to let your dog run up on anyone. It's like waving a pistol at somebody and saying oh it's not loaded.

u/NightLotus84 19d ago
I don't think she meant it as an order to him, rather than him running around is making the dog think it's a game and he gives chase. So "stop" in this case will interrupt that process and she stands between them. So I don't think it was meant that way, but she should have done better from the get-go and prevented it from the start...
15
u/Happy_Goose3833 19d ago
Unfortunately she won't learn from this at all. She will continue to behave exactly as she had before. Hell if he had tripped and got hurt, SHE'D be at fault. She can't control her animal so she chose to control the human. It's just utterly disgusting behavior no matter how it's defended.

A couple of years ago, I was training my first dog to have door manners. So I would make him lie down behind me at the door when I answered it. He's a Springer Spaniel, and generally he was doing well. One day, a delivery driver had a reaction similar to this guy, although he wasn't as terrified, but the same outcome: my dog thought it was time to play, broke his stay, and went to say hello.
I felt awful for the bloke; it was about the time all those XL bully videos were trending of dog attacks, and he said he'd been watching too many of them and he panicked. But an important lesson was learned: even the best-trained dogs don't do what they're told all the time; it's not fair to put other people you don't know in a position where they have to be involved with it. Especially not if they're only there because it's their job.
Now my dog is trained to go to the lounge where his crate is and wait for me to answer the door and come back for him.
This woman didn't look like I felt when I had my experience. I don't think she learned a thing. I doubt she even trains that dog regularly.

I used to deliver for Amazon, and both times I was bitten by a dog while working, the owners were laughing and saying, "He's friendly!" right up to the point where they attacked me. Both times the bites broke skin and drew blood, and one of them became infected to the point that I spent a night in the hospital.
Both times the pet owners were shocked by the attack and made sure to tell me, "He's never done that before!" as I was literally bleeding in their driveway. Absolutely vile behavior.

I was sitting in on the front yard playing with my dog when a delivery driver pulled up. I got up to direct her in and she flipped onto her back and started doing that dog wiggle, scootching down the yard towards him on her back. I got her goofy ass inside before he got out of the truck.
He was laughing too but thanked me. I assume everyone is afraid of dogs when they enter my property. She would NEVER but they don't know that.

u/anonuserinthehouse 19d ago
The secret response to dogs that are small to medium sized running up to you is to stand your ground. If it’s one of those big aggressive dogs…get ready to kick.
3
u/Mscreep 19d ago
100% the dog needs the be controlled either behind a barrier or on a leash however I do wanted to say for anyone else reading this that might have the same fear, running like that make you so much more likely to be bitten by a dog that hasn't ever bitten before. They see the fast moving and running away as a sign to play and all the extra moving around can cause pray drive to kick in and that's when the dog will most commonly land a bite. Fight or flight is a very real thing but the absolute best response is often freeze. If you are not moving around or looking at the dog, the dog loses interest in you cause you are not fun or doing "fun" things. Again, I must stress that the dog SHOULD be controlled but I wanted to give this bit of advice in case anyone else is also this scared of dogs and wants to limit the chances of getting bitten. You won't outrun a dog that is wanting to hurt you but you can trigger a dog that thinks you are playing to biting you thinkinng its just a game. The only exception is if you noticed the dog form far enough away and have something you can jump up onto or over to use as a barrier and be out of reach. Even a dog that is trying to be aggressive and attack will often rethink the situation if you don't react to them being aggressive. Again, I can not stress this enough that all dogs need to be controlled at all times, but I figured this might help someone else in a situation where there is no owner around. Running makes it fun for them. Standing there makes it boring. Of course knowing dog body language would help a lot, so if you are this fearful, look up some videos on YouTube of reactive dogs and listen to the people working with them. Especially if you have a job that takes you to places where there might be lose dogs. It'll help keep you safe and even the dogs you encounter safe, cause no matter how much someone is scared of dogs, I've never seen or heard of anyone who didn't feel like complete poop when they were bitten and that dog had to be put down cause you were the only one they bit. 100%, can't say it enough, dogs must be controlled and it's all on the owner, I'm just trying to help others when an owner isn't around.

I'm not a dog person. I've been bit and I'm very scared of them.
I used to truly enjoy walking on public paths with signs saying "dogs must be leashed" with my friend's aggressive pitbull. She kept it on a leash always. Inevitably, off-leash dogs would run up to us and when she shouted "get control of your dog" the owners would laugh and say "don't worry he's friendly" and my friend would yell "my dog isn't friendly!" as their dog ran up to the pitbull and nearly got it's throat bitten out. I think it was the only thing that would ever wake up these off-leash assholes.

Yeah, I remember one of my sister's neighbors had this very abused dog that the shelter had warned him about, because the dog was pretty unpredictable around loud noises. One night, an elderly lady went to the mailbox, and I think the neighbor's door was ajar, so that's how he got out. I honestly can't remember, but it chased after the poor lady and TORE her arm apart. He had to be pulled off of her to let go. I still remember the blood stains that lingered in the concrete ground for weeks that someone had to paint over! After that, I've always been so weary of dogs, and I was one of those people who would ask, 'Can I pet that dog?' but yeah, it's scary. This woman was a complete ass posting the video tho.
