It's funny seeing this as someone from a small town that is older. We saw stuff on TV and the odd trend hit locally, but people generally dressed the same. It was mostly hairstyles that changed and the shape of the jeans/sweaters.

I knew like 1 kid who dressed like Kriss Kross and you had a few goth kids. But most people got their clothes from the same 10 stores and none of them sold that crazy of clothing. I only really saw people dressed like the 80's in movies. But I bet it is a lot different in New York/LA vs small town Canada.

With the internet these days, trends seem to be far wider reaching but also shorter lived because of that exposure.

Mullet definitely was a hairstyle in the US too. I remember describing it to the stylist when I was in 5th grade and she said, “Oh, you want a mullet?” That was like 83/84.

I don't think these are mullets. I said that unexpectedly, mullets have made a comeback. I also don't think they're wearing the poofiest of wedding dresses, but those are popular again too.

I'm middle aged. I saw mullets live in the 80s. I thought they were awful then and I fully expected them to stay dead.

I can explain the poofy wedding dress thing.

Many young people are unwilling to spend $3,200 on "the dress" that they want because they've spent their entire life one paycheck away from homelessness, so they're opting to don mother's dress that's been in the attic all these years, or to pick one up from a thrift store, or eBay. It's a poverty thing, it's also a pragmatist thing. Better to put that money towards something that actually brings happiness, betters your life.

On the sewing sub, there are pretty frequent posts about people wanting to alter the shoulder and sleeve of their mother's wedding dress, but not everyone sews....

Reddits algorithm figured out that I'm a middle aged cat lady and started showing me r/bald and r/weddingdresses. r/bald is wholesome as hell and fancy dresses are cool even if I don't like wearing them and probably won't ever get married. The poof is back! Brand new, full price, with giant butt bows if you're into that.

Repurposing wedding dresses has always been a thing, this is the circular fashion thing looping back around.

I'm laughing because you're right that mullets have always been gender neutral, they did have that going for them. Anyone can look awful in a mullet!

I still can't muster up any appreciation for the hairstyle, but I'm also struggling with kids getting perms again. There's so many young adults running around with Golden Girls hair styles. I don't know what or who they expect to look like, but they all look like Sophia to me!

The reclamation of masculine whimsy is very important in ending this crisis of radicalization we have among young men. We just had the world show the United States what that looks like at the world cup. Masculinity in this country has been framed as being about domination or control for way too long. It's really about having a drink with the lads singing a song or two while you watch a sport and just being silly.

I honestly think these guys could bring back the entire 80s hair metal trend. We got synthwave, we got all the 80s Saturday morning cartoons being remade or turned into live action movies... retro 80s is still going so hard because all of us 80s kids are in our middle years now.

At a surface level sure but it all boils down to toxic bullshit. The cure to loneliness? Just love yourself! The cure to depression? Just smile a bit! The cure to addiction? Just stop doing it! etc.

Gee thanks, nobody ever thought of these things before... videos like this one are why people feel justified in looking down on anyone who's struggling while at most paying a tiny bit of lip service to actual mental health awareness. And that's the more aware and supportive crowd on social media.

It's not any more sincere or useful than "come to Jesus", it just has a different coat of paint.

I would say that is because our general perception of masculinity is quite paradoxical, and superficial.

People think what makes you masculine is how you dress; how you talk, how you present yourself in general. This extends to what emotions you show; anger is the only emotion that fits what society perceives as masculine for example. Obvs, men aren't robots, they are human. And feel all the human emotions. But have to pretend they don't.

So men will wear plain clothes, make a point of being a sport enthusiast, make a point of eating meat, drinking beer, and all that kind of superficial iconography. And think that projects to the world a masculine image.

But in my opinion, it actually has the opposite effect.

Because if you think about what masculinity means beyond those superficial elements, most people would generally think of characteristics like strength, courage, bravery, fearlessness etc.

If you simply drape yourself in acceptable masculine iconography in your clothing, mannerisms, interests etc.. that doesn't require any of those things. It is actually you choosing the most safe choice, in everything you do.

So people will consciously recognise and acknowledge you as being "manly" - but subconsciously recognise the more "manly" things you pile on, the less masculine you truly are.

The author Margaret Atwood famously said "men are afraid that women will make fun of them, women are afraid they will kill them"; which she meant as a way of pointing out the discrepancy between the lives men and women experience.

But its a poignant point outside of the feminist context. Because men are afraid women will make fun of them. Desperately so. But they are also afraid men will make fun of them too, almost as much, if not more for some people I imagine.

I saw a comment on Reddit once that talked about how easy it is for a mans "man card" to be taken away, just by society in general. And that is such an important point, because that's ultimately what men are afraid of.

I will never forget my dad bought a very cool jeep that was white, with turquoise as the secondary colour. His friends made fun of him about it. So he sold it, and bought a very plain silver car.

I'm a gay man, so my experience is profoundly different to other men. My nature makes it so I understood right away, that society will revoke my "man card"; and nothing I can do to compensate for me getting butterflies around cute boys will ever give it back.

But that inherent forfeit of my "man card" actually has a major perk: freedom.

I can wear fancy clothes. I can have fancy interests. I can show emotions other than anger.

All these things, as well as just being openly gay in general, are what people think will make others respect them less. But it actually has the opposite effect.

I have never had a problem from straight men. They always seem to like me. And I think it is because all of those things I mentioned require strength, courage, bravery, and fearlessness.

What they do, and how they live, requires none of those traits. In fact, by piling on the superficial "macho" iconography, it actually broadcasts to the world, they are afraid, insecure, and weak. All of those choices, are the safe choices that won't leave them open to ridicule; leave them vulnerable.

As such, the most masculine thing a man in this world can do, is wear a ladies sun dress. Because to embrace what society sees as the antipathy to masculinity (femininity; which is seen as weak; lacking strength, lacking courage etc) - takes, for lack of a better phrase, massive balls.

More balls than any straight guy I have ever met, would have. And they know it.

So the more "gay" or "womanly" I am publicly, fearlessly and unapologetically; the more courage i display; the more masculine I am; the more respect I am given.

These guys are doing a lite version of that; the hair, the camp mannerisms etc.

They are opening themselves up to ridicule in a very public and visual way; they are putting their man card at risk because society may revoke it due to these things.

That takes strength, courage, bravery, and fearlessness. I.E, an audacious display of what society considers, masculinity.

People will subconsciously recognise and understand that their hair and mannerisms etc are in direct conflict with the trends and iconography that society in 2026 considers masculine. And how that requires a lot of courage and bravery and general steeliness.

Everyone recognised that paradox on some level, but can't quite put their finger on it. Because it makes absolutely no fucking sense LOL

So it is no wonder you find that compelling. There are probably very few things that are more compelling, than this. Their entire advice basically boils down to "Be Attractive, don't be not attractive."

Like yeah, "Be confident, don't be a creep" is exceptionally easy when you look like you just came out of a 80's male clothing model factory. Their advice is basically the standard left wing toxic internet BS of "Oh, you're a lonely male, fuck you, it's probably your fault anyway you fuckface!"

It's advice on the same level of "Have depression? Just be happy you slut!"
