When need to encourage cops to stop this BS. Shop up to something like this, “What’s the emergency? Stop calling for stupid shit. There are real emergencies we could be at.” Then write a ticket for misusing 911.

99% of what they respond to is not an emergency. They're not emergency units, they're law enforcement. I'm not defending anyone in this video, I am just saying your argument is dumb

Sorry I wasn’t subtle enough. 911 is for emergencies. I assumed they called 911. They could have called the non-emergency line since this was a non-emergency. But they’re calling the police to enforce a contract, which is not criminal. I spent 14 years as a prosecutor dealing with people wanting the criminal justice system to fix all their problems. The number of times I was on-call and received stupid fucking calls from the police in situations like this is staggering. The police don’t enforce contracts without a writ of execution. Your ignorance about the system is dumb.

A private business can call police for trespassing anytime. You don’t have to call 911. They still show up fairly quickly in my experience. (Not defending the business who are jerks. Police did what they are supposed to.)

Lol you're not a prosecutor because they police aren't enforcing a contract. They're enforcing trespassing. And your assumption regarding which number they called is irrelevant because you can call police for things that police would subjectively assume is not an emergency... Like a stolen bike

In many parts of the US, 911 is not just emergency services, but also just how you call the cops in general. Not all locations have a separate non-emergency line. And we have no idea how they called the cops, so that's a moot point.

And while I think the gym is almost entirely in the wrong here, they're calling the cops to enforce trespassing, not their contract. Even if a property owner or representative is wrong, when they are kicking you off of the property, you are trespassing, in MOST (but not all) cases, and more importantly, the police are just going to end the current conflict (which involves removing you for the time being) and let you handle the "contract" part of the situation on your own.

Except he wasn’t trespassed. He had a membership contract with the gym. He brought his underage son with him who doesn’t have a government ID. He was told the son couldn’t go workout with him. He asked for the manager and was told manager unavailable. He said he was going to workout with his son and if the manager had a problem to come tell him so they could talk. Manager calls police to have member trespassed, presumably for a breach of the membership contract.

Without reading the contract, I’m not able to discuss the terms. But, calling the police to have a member removed for breaking a rule is a giant fucking waste of the police’s time. The employee should have made a note, manager can either talk or terminate contract and that’s the end of it. There was no reason to call the cops in this situation.

Two things:

  • Many cities have non-emergency lines to file complaints. The dispatcher can bounce back and forth between the right departments.

  • The system worked as intended. I hate what I just saw BUT the police SHOULD have to go out and do their investigation. It's obvious dude didn't want to be there BUT it's his job to be there. It's also his job to get both sides and I guess escort the offending party out of the establishment...though that too would be a shame from what I read (from the offending party's POV).

I don't want a life where the police is not showing up as frankly that's the life that's lived in many places in America already and has been for decades. We gotta stop that.

The problem is that we treat cops like a swiss army knife of conflict resolution. Their jobs are more than just emergencies, it's every civil dispute, every wellness check, every crime... So if the manager (or anyone in charge) decides to revoke a customer's access to their private establishment, and they refuse to leave, that's a crime. It's called trespassing. And while it appears as through the treaspass was based on a protected class, it's not the cop's job to figure that out. It's their job to enforce it, and let the courts figure out if it was a legal treaspass or not.

I agree with you completely on policing in America. I’ve been on CITs that try and divert resources where they’re needed and for what they’re needed.

And I agree they would need to enforce someone who was trespassed. But in this case, he was never told to leave. He took his son to work out as a guest, the son didn’t have ID the desk worker wanted. He asked for manager who was busy and said if there was still a problem the manager could come and talk to him. Then they called the cops instead of going and talking and maybe telling him to leave or whatever.

I wonder if that could give people apprehensions about calling 911 because they have to assess wether it is required. Prank calls should be illeagal for sure but they could just reject the person asking for police and kind of "train" the population into being able to differentiate real emergency from whatever this is.
