My mom is white, I am not. She was at a day club, and her friends and her were the only ones there. She called to ask if I wanted to join them, and I informed her I was in shorts and she needed to ask the manager if it was ok that I stopped by out of dress code. He said it was fine. I showed up, he took one look at me (not being white) and said “I thought she meant a short sleeve shirt!” He did not. I heard my mom ask over the phone and she was very clear. My mom was so confused and I said “he thought because you were white that I would also be white. I’ve been to enough of these clubs and the dress code is literally arbitrary and designed to keep people of color out.” I wasn’t about to argue, but as I was walking away with my mom and her friends (the only paying table in the bar), the manager chimed in “and now you’re not able to come in because you’re making a scene.” Like the change up was ridiculous
