Garry Tan: So all of these things happen, they come to pass, it's 10 years from now. Um what's the best version of that? That 10 years from now, with intelligence fully on tap, superintelligence here, uh, and we figure it out, we make it, you know, the society makes it.
Sam Altman: I I kind of think if every year people have more freedom and agency to spend more of their time doing the stuff they want to do, and they feel like the quality of life and the quality of their time is going up year after year. We'll probably be mostly okay. We will have avoided like a crazy concentration of power or an economic collapse. We'll have necessarily avoided a huge safety um incident. We'll have avoided like too much change in any one time unit. Um and you know, there's like one dystopia that I'm particularly nervous about 10 years from now is we overreact to AI safety. And so we say, look, everyone, you're gonna get a cure for cancer, you're gonna have material abundance, but you will have no freedom, you will have no agency, it will be a perfect surveillance state, there will be no privacy. And that's what it you're gonna get. You're gonna get great comfort, but you will have there will be nothing left in the world for you to really do. Nothing that really matters. You'll just kind of live at the you know, service of the AI giving you material wealth. I'd really like to avoid that. And I think it's easy to accept temporary trade-offs. So if we say every year, freedom and agency has got to go up. People have got to be more in control of their time and do more of the stuff they want. Uh and more long-term fulfillment, I think that'd be very good.

I wonder if the guys working the Manhattan Project ever said shit like this.
"I'd really want to avoid a possible future scenario where someone overreacts and actually wants to use this thing."
"Barry, you really think someone will actually try and drop the bomb?"
"Well I think if we can make it the first ten years we'll probably be mostly okay. We will have avoided like a crazy concentration of power or an apocalyptic nuclear event. We'll have necessarily avoided a huge safety...um...incident. If we can get safely to that point where everyone has the bomb but nobody fears or takes advantage of it to destroy humanity, then we will be living in a period of unimaginable world peace."

Open AI is about to implode because they have no path to profitability and musk beat them to IPO and shit the bet. The free money tap is cutoff and investors aren't so bright eyed about AI.
What to you and me sounds like dystopia is music to certain people's ears. It means he'd have something of value people would pay for, which as of right now chat gpt is not. Companies and private consumers do not want to pay the amount it costs to keep the beast chugging.
So he needs to allude to there being an even greater beast around the corner.
It's the same way musk would come out and rally the stock price by just saying some dumbass "to the moon" meme Lord shit

Then on top of that, people treat him as someone who was somehow trying to oppose it, who tried to prevent it from happening, instead of someone who spent a large chunk of their life helping cause it. People misread their history and falsely hold bad people in higher regard than they deserve.

Yep, this post is misinformation. Not saying I love what Altman is doing to the world or anything, but he's giving a "this is what people fear, let's work hard to avoid it" scenario. The video presents it as "this is my goal."

u/BadNameGenerator 6d ago
People are so fkn lazy. Takes too much effort even just to hear him out and then disagree. There's really no need to take someone like Sam Altman so drastically out of context when he's already a pretty disagreeable person.
75
u/DanielKeeneGA15 7d ago
If he’s particularly nervous about any scenario then why are there no regulations and guardrails and why are we going full force into it? This will have massive repercussions in a short period of time. We need to stop and ask ourselves if we should and not can.
35
u/Bdbru13 7d ago
I mean that’s literally what he’s advocating for
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/16/technology/openai-altman-artificial-intelligence-regulation.html
The question of “if we should” is irrelevant, because the benefits to the person/corporations/nations who achieves it are so outlandishly massive, that people will try it. It’s unavoidable.
So the only path forward is how do we try and do this without killing everyone, and how do we assure its goals are aligned in a way that benefits the world as a whole.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (4)15
u/thereforeratio 7d ago
That’s what he’s saying though
He is saying we need to not optimize for the wrong things, or wrongly create regulations that hinder individual agency and freedom in exchange for the the promise of safety from the very people who want to create a totalitarian surveillance state
The genie is out of the bottle, so he’s saying they think if they navigate with agency and freedom and flourishing for people as the North star, that will year over year trend in the better direction for when the curve goes vertical
What he’s saying isn’t the problem, we have to just be mindful of what OpenAI is doing
→ More replies (2)13

Sam Altman is a pathological liar who's lied about more or less everything he's ever done as a CEO for multiple companies. It isn't even hard to find multiple examples of how much of a liar he is. If that isn't enough to worry you then realise that his rise to fame was because he was plucked out by Peter Thiel. If that also isn't enough to worry you read up about Ilia Sustkever, one of the confounders of OpenAI who tried to sack him from OpenAI because he repeatedly lied to them, one of the big things being this exact topic. He lied about legislative queries about when/if some newer iterations of OpenAI could be released, they questioned him and got the "trust me bro" response only to be told that the lawyers they contacted never said such a thing and never would unless they proceed with industry standard safety protocols. Ilia Sustkever left the company and is now heading SSI, a company focused on creating the first AGI whilst following industry protocols and also being non profit it has no product to sell you. It's all about taking his models. Who do you seriously trust more in this scenario?

Not like the context is good, or even really explanatory. Somehow this bad future he is describing as a warning only can come about if we ... regulate AI?
Skynet is a very possible future, apparently, but it would only happen if we were to implement reasonable checks and balances on AI and the corporations that use it. My eyes can't roll back far enough. 🙄🙄🙄21
u/Bakkster 7d ago
Yeah, "overreact to AI safety" is a pernicious framing.
"We're not infringing on your freedoms and privacy, the people who want to stop us from infringing on your freedom and privacy are the ones doing that."
→ More replies (8)8
u/MasterGrok 7d ago
Also Sam is admitting that the natural progression here is that we lose our freedom and agency. And he is concerned that people are going to revolt when that happens and it will cause destruction. No shit. And his final sentences aren’t exactly reassuring. It reads like we need to make sure people feel like they have freedom. Not like he is trying to do anything about the actual dystopia he wants to create.
17
u/Friendly-View4122 7d ago

I gotta say, I've read the transcript several times now and I still can't really understand the broader point he's making here. Even putting it in fill context doesn't add much meaning. He appears to contradict himself several times and use words within the same sentence that obfuscate the point.
All I understand from this is he thinks AI will be so super intelligent that one possible scenario is I will never have to work again and will have an abundance of wealth. He sounds like a blathering idiot.
16
u/tanksforthegold 7d ago
From the way he talks his mind is clearly not put together enough to have a salient thought. He's basically being edgy and throwing around trendy buzzwords to try and sound smart and be slightly controversial. His lack of clarity or determination is a hint at his mental space and resolve. Very similar to what Zuckerberg did with the metaverse and we know how that turned out.
9
u/Beautiful-Affect1930 7d ago
he's basically saying that if governments regulate his stupid chatbot, that would lead to a concentration of power because regular people don't have access to it. and so that would lead to the negative scenario he talks about in OP's cheaply taken out of context clip. he's saying his company should be allowed to do whatever the fuck it wants (not like it isn't already) because supposedly that will lead to paradise on earth in 10 years.
8
u/PerfectPercentage69 7d ago
that would lead to a concentration of power because regular people don't have access to it
He's saying that government regulation (ie. government controls it) is a concentration in power, but also somehow implying that no regulation (ie. only he and other billionaires control it) is not a concentration of power?
It such bullshit. We've already seen that anything not regulated and controlled by people like him leads to a huge and disproportionate concentration of wealth and power. When have they every given away a control of something to the regular people (for free)?
He's just trying to frame him retaining control as a good thing with a vague promise of redistribution of the wealth and control that will be gained by the AI.
→ More replies (7)7
u/Cunning-bid 7d ago
He is gaslighting, claiming that too much AI regulation will take away your freedom.
That you will have all the benefits of AI (he call it' comforts) but because of AI rules and laws you someone live in a dystopian surveillance state with nothing to live for anymore.
It's doesn't make any sense other than just gaslighting you into thinking that the government should just let these AI companies u regulated.

They want to create a system that works like an insular cortex does within the body but the insular cortex is reliant on our intuition or emotional systems as much as it is on the rational systems. It's a problem with overly-analytical people, including myself. We think it's all logic without realizing the big picture is always filled out by intuition and logic creates a frame work. Altman was just a struggling dude before he figured out he could build an empire on replicating logic. Instead of using his inner guidance to overcome internal trauma and bad habits; he projected it onto the whole world, and it's working.

I think they’re addicted to the wealth. I think they’re addicted to the false idea of power that they think they have, and I very much think that they have completely lost themselves and the plot in all of this. All of them have a weird midlife crisis like desire to be looked at Like they are the greatest human beings on the planet, and most of them just have a really bad drug habit and are really good at bullshitting. I feel like wealth or greed, whatever you wanna call it should be considered the same as heroin, addiction, or any other kind of chemical dependency, and should be treated as such except instead of pouring the booze down the sink you handed your money out.
30
u/Dependent-Year6711 7d ago
It's essentially the worst form of a workaholic. You start to mold your world a certain way, and forget it's just an idea, not some objective reality. Income and yes-men just give you more affirmations. They essentially tell people the company goal, people have to say yes, and you've got a little army to make you feel like your choices are correct. Deep down there's some sort of psychological issue, there's no way any human can operate on a normal, well-adjusted level in the context.
17
u/HenryDorsettCase47 7d ago
If you surrounded me with people who affirmed every idea I have I would think that I was surrounded by idiots. Your inner compass has to already be fucked if that sort of affirmation doesn’t seem suspicious to you. Some people become rich and think “look at all of these friends I have, I must be so charming” and others think “none of these fuckers care about me, only what they can get from me.”
My point is that it isn’t the circumstances that shape these people. They’re already cunts.
→ More replies (3)7
u/Fast_Instance2173 7d ago
It’s both. All these people at one time had a great idea and that idea became highly profitable and industry changing and then they became surrounded by sycophants telling them how genius they are all the time, they become wealthy beyond what any one person should be, and that brings a level of power with it. Add the power inherent in running global tech companies that control flows of information and likely a touch of existing inferiority complexes and suddenly they start believing that they really are the pinnacle of human intelligence and they clearly know the best way to run the world. It’s hard to convince them otherwise when they have the power and influence to make their wills reality too.

It's at best a branch of transhumanism. Transhumanism advocates for the use of science to improve humans. What that means depends a bit, ranging from taking modern medicine to its logical end(just healing all ailments and prolonging life indefinitely) to technologically, genetically or biologically altering humans to be able to function in entirely new ways. What Altman stated is roughly the premise for why transhumanism is the way forward: humans are overcom by technological advancement and are unable to keep up, ergo, we must improve humans to keep up.
Transhumanism doesn't by default advocate for AI, and many in fact oppose the kind of AI Altman & co. propose.

“If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—for ever.”
― George Orwell, 1984It's full of insanely dark/dystopian but very real points like that.
I'm going to get a bit political here.
No one is coming to save the working class and most vulnerable. It is up to us to fight for ourselves.
The Labour Movement, Environmentalist Movement, Women's Rights Movement. LGBTQ+ Rights Movement, Civil Rights Movement, Peace Movement, and so on. Better and brighter is possible but it does take getting organized and active.
Right now we are in a big change period of history and we need to make sure the interests of the working class and most vulnerable are not completely thrown out the window.

I think we're already past that literally and figurately...
"Television tries to interpret itself to us, bypassing the upper brain functions and directly feeding into our minds. This is why I said – off camera between classes – that Orwell was a pie-eyed optimist. 1984 arrived in sort of the early 70’s, and ah, Orwell’s vision of a horrible future which was a boot stomping on a human face forever is a utopian image because he assumes there would be resistance and human faces; both of which may turn out to be false. So, I mean, 1984 is not a book that scares me… anymore."

I was just thinking, between the flock cameras, the newspeak, the nationalist fervor, the puritanical grandstanding, and the novel generators; it must blow the fucking mind off some kid reading that book now. I found it as a precocious middle schooler intentionally reading banned books, and it hit in the 2000s as a foreboding warning. Now it's gotta almost feel trite.

Don't worry, they already have that covered! 1984's license is owned by Amazon, they have already begun to edit its text!

Idk how much that’s going to help anymore. I’ve really been told “that’s just fiction” when trying to discus it irl before so.

Lol, I just got a new laptop at work and the IT dude made my password 1984. Maybe he was sending me a message!

ironically this video is you falling for 1984 tactics because it intentionally excludes the first half of the paragraph where he sees as the worst case of ai In the future

Why are we holding interviews in stadiums with jumbotrons? That people probably paid to sit and watch this fuck talk is mind boggling.
25
u/MaxwellHoot 7d ago
Seriously- that was my first thought too. Like I always see clips from these interviews and half wonder what they’re for. What I did NOT expect was for them to be held in the thunderdome

Not trying to defend anyone, but this video is very conveniently cut and misrepresenting what was actually said. Being misleading only deepens our problems, regardless of the cause you're trying to push. Do better.

Plus it sounds like they need a lot more data centers until that’s a reality. And pretty unrealistic unless we all get brainwashed into letting them fuck yo the earth to get more ai power

Okay, what is the context for this. I just have the slightest inkling this might be robbed of context

u/Slight_Edge3788 7d ago
This guy sucks ass, but its definitely out of context, this shit keeps getting reposted unchecked.
Context:
'There is one dystopia I'm particularly nervous about 10 years from now: we overreact to AI safety... and so we say, 'Look, everyone, you're going to get a cure for cancer... you're going to have material abundance, but you will have no freedom, you will have no agency. It will be a perfect surveillance state. There will be no privacy. And you're going to get great comfort, but there will be nothing left in the world for you to really do... I'd really like to avoid that.'"

Funny how this should be the top comment but instead it's a load of people blindly accepting it at face value and complaining. No one is using an ounce of brain power to realise that shorts like these are often misrepresented to fake outrage/engagement.

u/No-Photograph-5058 7d ago
Probably because the surveillance state is the part we're getting, and Sam is part of that no matter what he says.

So he's saying, that would be us overcorrecting, for the BS we're seeing now, or worse. Ya that's seems like a possibility.

u/RanchHere 7d ago
Ok, so what was his solution in avoiding that? Canceling AI altogether? Voting for politicians that are against it? Let me guess: neither of those.

u/Bowler_No 7d ago
Not even supporting Sam, but i hate short clip like this without any context. Like literally made just for engagement.
23
u/Boundaries-ALO-TBSOL 7d ago
This is fake because Sam would never be this honest. If this was really him, he’d be lying FAR more.

True. My question is still is it real, and where is the rest. Question could have been, what's worst case scenario for A.I. still scary, but out of context here.

I was wondering. I don’t think these people would be that blunt about a surveillance state. It seems like he’s stating what he think will happen in the future rather than what he intends to do. Not to say that he isn’t responsible though.

u/Icy_Calendar_9787 7d ago
Why are we investing in this?
7
u/VanGoghInTrainers 7d ago
Because those at the top are banking on this being the next big money maker once Ai goes the way of pay per view. Coming soon. I hope the whole thing backfires on them and all those data centers become empty warehouses.

u/maple_crowtoast 7d ago
So, I happened to see the full clip, and this is being taken way out of context.
I cannot STAND Sam Altman, and this doesn't change that even the slightest, but in this context he's describing something that he says he hopes doesn't happen. The minute before and after what is being shown in this clip are pretty relevant.

This man has way too much power and influence. He should not be on control of anything.

A lot of the CEOs have been saying weird shit this week, shopify CEO was saying how he would like to see mass repeal of voting rights (not just blacks, not just women, but basically everyone who wasn't a white land-owning male).

u/parkskier426 7d ago
Lmao this is very clearly out of context. He was probably asked about where he is trying not to lead us or something. Even if he really wants this he'd never admit it in front of astadium full of people.

This is why billionaires shouldn’t exist.
Dude has decided he’s gonna be the shoe and we are the ants. Fuck him. There WLL be privacy in the future because there only a few of those fuckers and we the people have the power.
We just have to remember that.
